Most dragons are ruthless, ferocious beasts. They would destroy entire towns, kill anything living in sight, and have no remorse whatsoever for their actions. There is a single dragon, though, that differs amongst them; his name is Spike. How does he differ from other dragons, you may ask? The answer is simple: Spike couldn't hurt a fly. He was a peaceful dragon, born and raised around ponies. This may have made him weaker than other dragons, but it also gave him better morals. Being peaceful does have its disadvantages, though; if a foreign threat were to raise itself, one would be powerless to protect the ones they love.
And thus Spike always hungered for power, but it was always out of his reach. As a baby, he was content with the life he lived as Twilight Sparkle’s assistant. But as the years went by, he realized that the ponies he grown to care so much about were the very things holding him back. As time went by, Spike’s hunger for power only grew, and a strong resentment for the ponies began to rise. As more and more resentment came to be, the emotions he was feeling turned into a fire of burning hatred.
A dragon’s power is fueled by hatred, and the raw power that Spike holds within him is enough to rival gods, shatter mountains, and destroy worlds. Spike’s draconic instincts drew him down this path. Living in the library since he was a baby, he picked up on a few things. Spike knew the secret behind the dragons’ power, so he allowed the hate to build up, sealing it away until something- anything, really- pushed him over the edge.
But what Spike didn't know was that once you're consumed by hatred, you're no longer in control. What you once were is pushed back into the very depths of your mind and sealed away for eternity. Even as a teenage dragon, Spike holds the power of a god, and when released… Nothing will be able to stand in his way.

Celestia’s sun shone bright above the town of Ponyville, and Spike was lounging around Twilight’s library, alone with his thoughts. His friend and sister-figure was upstairs in her room studying, as she always was. Spike never really liked to go out too much because now all of Ponyville’s citizens thought of him as a monster. They had seen him like this ever since he went through a growth spurt. Everyone thought of him as a monster with a time bomb strapped to his back.
Spike could understand why they would see him like this, but it still hurt him. Even all Twilight's friends had become uncomfortable when in his presence. The only two in the entire town who looked at him as anything but a monster were his sister figure Twilight Sparkle and his flight instructor Rainbow Dash.
Even the mare that he used to spend so much time on- dedicating all of his free time to, and trying to win her heart- was now afraid that he would go berserk and destroy Ponyville. But he no longer cared; he gave up on her years ago due to the fact that he hated most of the ponies, and she was added to the list after getting no appreciation after the Diamond Dogs incident. He stopped going to see her, and when she came to the library to see if something had happened to the young drake, Spike only words for Rarity were, “Buck off." He’d sent her away in tears, more times than he cared to remember, but he felt no guilt, no remorse. It actually felt good to see the mare broken down like she was.
After the new spread about that little incident, the ponies of Ponyville always shot him dirty looks when he went outside; Rarity, needless to say, stopped talking to him. But he didn't care; her high-pitched voice and dumb way of speaking always made him feel like his ears were going to explode.
Soon after this, when Spike was walking through Ponyville, he had tripped over a rock and a burst of fire had shot from his mouth. Unfortunately, an oblivious Pinkie Pie was bouncing down the street right in the line of fire, at the time. The flames hit her from the left and burnt off over half of her mane. Because nopony was in the vicinity at the time it looked like assault. Pinkie Pie was in the hospital for several months after that due to third-degree burns covering her face. She never forgave Spike after that.
A little under a year later, Spike had a heated argument with Twilight about his work slipping. He had stormed out of the library to go blow off some steam the only way he knew how: some good old-fashioned destruction. He went over to Sweet Apple Acres and lit a good portion of the trees on fire. Unfortunately for him, Applejack had caught him in the act. He was put in the Ponyville detention center for a few days.
When Applejack came to see him, she asked him one simple question: “Did you mean to do what you did?" Spike only answered with a single word. “Yes.” He said it with no expression on his face, to boot. When Applejack saw he wasn't lying, she ran out of the detention center crying and proceeded to never talk to Spike again. Nopony could blame her, though; the fire he started had caused almost half of Sweet Apple Acres to burn to the ground.
Spike was lucky Twilight was able to talk princess Celestia out of throwing him into the castle dungeon. It was a close call, but in the end she agreed to keep him out of the dungeon in exchange for some community service. Princess Celestia had sentenced him to 200 hours, but he barely did 40 before he bailed out. The princess kept it at that.
The story with Fluttershy wasn’t a very interesting one. Spike been hunting in the Everfree forest, and Fluttershy had been in the forest at the time. She saw Spike kill a timber wolf, and run away. As fast as Spike was, he was able to catch up to Fluttershy very quickly, and he was somehow able to the make her promise not to tell everyone else; in return, though, she made him promise never to hunt in the forest again. That was obviously a promise made to be broken, if only because Spike’s species is carnivorous. From that day on, Fluttershy felt very uncomfortable around Spike. It kept getting worse and worse, until she was at the point where she couldn't even look at him.
Rainbow Dash knew about all this but for some reason still liked Spike. He could never figure out why that Pegasus liked him so much. Twilight knew about all of the incidents except for the one with Fluttershy, but ruled it out as Spike not being in a right state of mind at the time. Although no matter how many times she would talk to the others, they always stood by their conclusions.
~*~*~*~
It almost 12 years since Spike and Twilight Sparkle had moved to Ponyville. When Spike had moved to Ponyville he could not measure up to half of Twilight’s size; now he towered over her, measuring roughly 7 feet tall. His wings had grown in, about five years back; it was a painful process, but not unbearable. After his wings sprouted, Dash had begun to train him. Even with the intense hatred burning inside of him, Spike was proud to admit that those were some of the best times of his life.
After about six months of flight training, Spike had become as fast as his rainbow-maned teacher, and after a year Spike was able to beat her in a race at full speed. The still have an occasional race every now and again, but Spike always emerges the victor. Even against the fastest Pegasus in Equestria, it is still nearly impossible to beat a dragon in a race.
Spike no longer helped run library like he used to. In fact he did quite the opposite. When he was not lounging around the library, he was either out flying around, or hunting in the Everfree forest. He of course could never tell Twilight about this, considering ponies are vegetarians.
But Spike could no longer survive on fruit and vegetables alone. Dragons are natural carnivores, and Spike had grown to enjoy the taste of meat. He'd killed and eaten almost every type of animal there was, so Spike had started to wonder: what would a pony taste like?
Spike mouth started to water at the thought. From his experience, anything that looked good on the outside probably was just as good on the inside. Spike shook his head to rid himself of this thought. He had never thought anything like this before, so why now? Spike ruled this out as just being hungry again. He decided to go hunting for his favorite meal, a manticore. They may not be the easiest things to take down but they sure as hell are the tastiest. Spike was drooling just thinking about it. A manticore leg heavily roasted over an open fire, with a little bit of the venom from the tail as dipping sauce.
Spike was snapped out of his daydream by the voice of Twilight Sparkle.
" Spike!" she yelled.
"Huh, what?" Spike snapped out of his trance.
"I said you need to stop drooling on the floor," she said with an annoyed expression on her face.
“Oh… Uh, yeah, sorry. Well I'm headed out," he said as he started for the door.
“No way. Not until you clean this up," she said sternly.
Spike scoffed at her. “Not my problem. Do it yourself." He didn’t even turn around to glance at her.
Twilight was shocked to say the least. He had never behaved this way around her before. What was wrong with him? "W-well can you please tell me where you're going?" she said as Spike had just opened the door.
Spike stopped for a moment and looked back at her. She was sitting on her haunches, staring at him with worry in her eyes; but Spike knew it was just a ruse. It made him sick to his stomach just to look at her. He knew she didn't actually care about him and she never did, and he hated her for it. Acting like she cared about him when in reality was she couldn't even stand him for what he was. Who did she think she was?
“Well now, I don't think it's any of your damn business," he said with anger in his voice. With that said he walked out of the library and into the midday sun, not even turning around give a second glance to the baffled Twilight Sparkle that he left standing in the middle of library. He couldn't stand to be around her right now. He just wanted to get away- away from of pain, away from the agonizing life he lived in Ponyville... Away from all of the peace.
