//-------------------------------------------------------// Beasthunter -by BMIR- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 1 //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 1 *** Warm sun was at it's peak in Griffonia. Rare white clouds at the blue skies and a light breeze of wind blowing from time to time. Good august day in the capital of the country - Griffinstone. Clear cobblestone roads with two-story houses at the both sides, swarmed by green leaves of the trees and bushes. A rare citizen can be seen on the porch of their houses, walking down the road or tending to their little gardens with roses, lilies, tulips and other kinds of flowers and plants. One particular griffin chick was different from the citizen. She wore black and red armor, two swords on her back, secured by straps in sheaths. She looked young, maybe 20-22, musculine but slim body, snow white unkempt hair with purple streaks, beautiful yellow eyes with a note of worry. Said chick held a letter in her left hand, yet not opened. She's going to open it at home. A lone sweat bead run down from her forehead. "Why I didn't took it later after the lunch time?.." - she toght, heavily exhaling, dreading the upcoming talk. She knew that her mother would be displeased at her behaviour. Last thing she wanted is to make mother frown at her. Turning left and stepping over the steps of her porch - she grabbed the handle and slowly opened the door. Walking into the house - she was immediately hit with a strong smell of cooked fish and vegetables."Yep, she's definitely at home. It's only a matter of time before-" "GILDA VON EVEREK! GET YOUR ASS IN THE KITCHEN RIGHT NOW!" - bellowed woman's voice from the depths of the first floor. Oh, she was angry. Gilda's heart leaped at the tone of her mother. She heard that volume only at the training grounds and/or when Gilda screwed up. Nothenless - young chick walked trough the corridor of the first floor and stopped in the doorframe of the kitchen. In here, turned back at Gilda was her mother - Olga Von Everek. She looked no older than 35 years. Shaved temples, short, straight, ginger hair combed to right side, athletic, tall, musculine figure with couple of tattoos of wines with thorns and roses at her hands that cowered battle scars, simple silver erring in left ear. She wore white shirt with rolled up sleeves, black pants that were wide in the hips, simple boots and grey apron. Currently she was busy chopping peeled potato for the fish soup and judging by the colour of the fillet and the smell - it was salmon. "Sit at the tabel." - Olga said, looking behind her right shoulder at Gilda with piercing green eyes.Young grif obeyed and sat at one of the four available chairs, laying the letter at the table before her. In couple of seconds chopped potatoes was at the pot and left to boil in soon to be soup. Olga turned to face Gilda, crossing her arms under the breasts, disappointment at her face. Gilda was looking down at the table, not daring to look her in the eyes. With tired sight, Olga calmly walked to Gilda and sat down next to her. "Gilda..." - she started calmly this time, the look of disappointment changed into concern. - "Why did you skipped your last lesson today?" - The woman calmly asked. "I-I didn't thought that I could pick up the letter after the lunch. I was too curious, because this letter from my friend in Equestria. Last time I saw her at the end of a Flight Camp. Recently we started to write each other." Right after those words two strong hands embraced Gilda, one at her back under her swords and one at her nape, pressing her rosy left cheek at Olga's midsection. "Oh my dear Gilda, I was so worried about you." - whispered Olga to her daughter. "I thought something happened to you, or you didn't wanted to train and bailed from the class. I'm sorry about the tone of my voice, Gilda." Gilda, embracing her mother and pressing her fingers to her back silently shaking her head, taking unsteady breath. - "No, it's my fault, mom. I needed to stop and think, but I acted without concidering everything. Sorry that I make you worry about me." "Oh Gilda..." - Olga said, backing up a bit and caressing her palm from Gilda's nape to her cheek, looking in her eyes. - "I'll always was and will be worried about you. No matter what." With that said, Gilda give her a small smile, that was answered with soft kiss on the forehead. - "Now, go and wash up, dear. Lunch will be ready soon. I know you like salmon." - She gave Gilda a warm smile, breaking the hug and standing up, returning to the crystal-powered stove with a slowly boiling soup. Young grif left the letter at the table and exited the kitchen, walking to the stairs and going up to the second floor. Left at the kitchen alone - Olga tasted the soup with the spoon, checking the potatoes and salt. While she was finishing preparations - she was thinking about Gilda - her adopted daughter. "Feels like only yesterday she said her first word - mama - and now she almost grew up into a beautiful young griffin. She still had half a year before being concidered an adult and could leave the house, live by her own. Maybe find love if she didn't already... It's hard to have relationship with your mother in the house after all. Of course, if she didn't do that in her lovers house. Or in the field of maize couple of miles to the north-east- No. It's her life, her achievements and mistakes. If she needs my help - she would ask me... I hope..." - Olga thought to herself, pouring steaming soup into the bowls. Placing them at the table - she returned to the cooking spot and cut freshly baked bread, serving him to the table too. Removing her apron and placing it on the back of her chair Olga sat down, tracing pretty big cicatrix on her left arm with fingertips, looking at it in deep thought. "I wonder - how she's doing right now? Ruling a county is not easy. I heard that the Elements of Harmony showed up and helped her sister couple of months ago. Good for her..." - She toght with small smile on her face. Gilda came back in the same outfit, not letting her mother drift too deep into her thoughts. Walking to Olga - Gilda gave her a tight hug and a soft kiss on the cheek. Sitting down - she eyed their lunch with content smile. - "Do you have plans for today?" "Hmm... Yes." - She nodded, taking a spoonful of soup - "Mayor wanted to see me and asked that I come to his office after lunch. Probably something about scavens in the caves south-east from Griffinstone or another manticore in the local woods. Other than this I have no plans, dear." "Well... Maybe we could spent some time together?" - Gilda asked hopefully, looking at Olga - "I thought about going on a little family outing. Just you and me in a different city. Maybe we could visit my friend from Equestria. I would love her to meet you." "Then let's do it like this then : if mayor doesn't give me any serious job - we will go on vacation. If he do give me an important job - we will do it together, collect our payment and then bail out of the city. How does that sound?" - while they talked - they ate their lunch with a good amount of speed. It's hard to break a working habits. "Yeah, sounds perfect." - just like that - soup and bread was eaten. Gilda collected empty bowls, put them in the sink and turned the valve with hot water, doing her part in cleaning the dishes - "Um, mom?" - When Olga looked at her - young grif gave her a sincere smile - "When you said that I don't want to train - you were very wrong. Training to become Griffin Beasthunter is one of the best things that happened to me. Instructor goes in length about your achievements and how "The Goddess of War finished Griffonia-Equestrian war in one duel"." - she giggled, after imitating the tone of her instructor. Olga gave a good-hearted laugh - "By my ancestors, they still saying that after 494 years? Oh my, Gilda! Pwhahaha!" - She continues to laugh, Gilda joining in, giggles turned into full-blown guffaw. *** When the laughter died down and the dishes were cleaned - Olga goes to her room for a change of garment. She wore the exact same armor as Gilda and any other member of Griffin Beasthunter. The difference being that she had more useful stuff attached to her armor. Couple of strong healing potions on her belt, along with the tube for documents, sheath with 7 inch hunting knife, little ring with couple of keys, hook for trophies and little bag of talons - Griffonia's currency. Her swords, named "Risk" and "Reward" were always sharpened, her armor clean, showing couple of battle scars on her midsection, and her tools in place. Leaving her room and going down to the first floor - she finds Gilda in the kitchen, reading the letter. Olga smiled with one side of her mouth, knocking at the doorframe with her knuckles. Gilda jolted up and locked at her, the look of spooked chick turning into one of small smile - "I always liked how you looked in your armor, mom. Ready to go?" "Yeah, I'm gone... " - She winked at Gilda, making her blush. But before she depart - the woman came close to Gilda and whispered into her ear - "...my little Gilly." "Mooom! You called me like that when I was 5!" - whined Gilda, covering her ears with hands and burying her face in the table. Laughing, Olga exited her house with haste and stopped at the porch, taking deep inhale of fresh afternoon day. Exhaling, she put her everyday neutral smirk and walked to the street, mentally building a route to the mayor's office. On the road that took only half an hour she got a couple of "good day's" from random citizens and every guard on the way gave her a nod of respect except for young ones that didn't know her yet. It didn't sadened Olga not one bit. A lot of things in this country became a lot better compared to 50 years ago. Hell, even 10 years ago. Quality of life risen significantly, everygrif could live peacefully, free education for young, almost everygrif had his own living space, and there was work for everybody. With a good mood - she greeted guards at the doors of town hall, with a knock and "come in" behind it - Olga entered the mayor's office. In the center of a room was a long table, at it's head was mayor Silverbeak. He's currently was busy with the documents and didn't noticed that someone else was in the room. After Olga cleared her throat - mayor lifted his head and beamed. "Lady Von Everek! I'm so glad that you came. Come, take a seat, please." - he gestured with his hand to the nearest armchair. Taking her seat - Olga looked Silverbeak over. He was a griffin in his start of a hundred. His short, steel like hair was combed, his skin cowered in small wrinkles. His soft cyan eyes dimmed with age. He was two thirds trough his life already. Time runs fast when you busy... "You asked for me to come, Silverbeak. I'm not opposed to coming and talking casually with you, but last time it was half a years ago, when you were nervous about the re-elections and actually send me a note to come to you. So... Why am I here this time? If this is a contract - you know where our post is." - Olga said with neutral tone. "Well, there is something very important, Olga..." - he answered, reaching in the stacked pile of papers and pulling beige colored parchment, laying it on the table before Olga. She reached for the parchment and took it in one hand, starting to read : To the Headmaster of Griffin Guild of Beasthunter's. In lights of current situation between Griffonia and Equestria, Princess Celestia expressed her worries about the situation of uncontrolled beast's within the borders of Equestria and asked King Goldclaw for permission to create similar guild to the Griffin Beasthunters in Poniville, Equestria. Thus, Princess Celestia asking Headmaster of the Beasthunters to travel to Poniville and take residence in here, while main building of the new guild will be built. After he/she train first group of the new Hunters, she could return back to Griffonia with hefty pay and/or stay as a guest of Equestria. Signed, King Goldclaw Olga read the letter couple times over before putting it down and letting out an annoyed breath. After that, she looked at Silverbeak, who stared at one point on his table with locked fingers. - "You know, Silverbeak? I love my country, I really do. But what I don't like is when someone using me as a tool." Silverbeak closed his eyes and exhaled. Looking back at her he started to say - "Olga-" - but couldn't finish his sentence, she interrupted him. Smashing her fist into the table. "Don't Olga me! You know as well as I am that they just jealous about our Hunters! To top it all off - third of the ponykind hate griffin's! Unicorns hate us because griffin's high resistance to magic! This is such focken' bullshite!" - She raged, scowling. "I know Olga, I know. But this is king's order and you, being one of the higher ups, will obey him. I'm sorry, Olga. I really am." "I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the situation. And I hoped that I could spend couple of days alone with my daughter..." - She exhaled. - "You know what? Fine. I will do it. Not because I like the idea, but because Gilda wanted to get out of the town. What a fucking joke..." - She spat. *** "So let me get this straight. We will go to Poniville for aproximetly 4 years to train ponies how to be Beasthunters by king's order?" - Gilda asked perplexed. She and Olga was sitting at the kitchen table, drinking wine, because good mood evaporated out of the Olga after that message. And also because she didn't wanted to drink alone and Gilda expressed that she wanted some wine too. It was late evening. After the visit to the mayor - Olga bought two tickets to Poniville for tomorrow train at 10 am sharp. "Basically, yeah. I'm not thrilled to do this either, dear. But I have no choice." - Olga upped another glass of wine, fifth in a row, while her daughter was finishing her third. They often enough spend some time like that. When they had a problem with something or was stressed - they talked to each other, letting out steam. "It's alright, mom. After all - we will get out of the Griffonia. New faces is almost always good." - Young griffin encouraged with gentle smile and rosy cheeks, alcohol already took a hold of her blood a little. "I wish I had your optimism right now. But alas, no such luck." - She exhaled tiredly - "Gilda, go pack your stuff, our train leaves tomorrow at 10 in the morning... I'll clean this up and will pack my gear too." Gilda nodded to this and stopped midstep away from the kitchen - "Actually, mom? Can we... Can we sleep together tonight? I feel like I need it... As well as you do too... We could pack tomorrow." - Olga could only smile motherly to her and nod. It's good to know that at the end of the day her daughter always lifts her spirit and didn't afraid to show her - how much she was loved. Disposing empty bottles of wine, not like Olga could get drunk from them - both residents of the house ascended to the second floor, entering Olga's room. What could you expect from her room? It was simple : comfortable looking bed with one side pressed to the wall, nightstand with little lamp, closet with her clothes, mannequin for the armor, shelfs with all kinds of trinkets, weapon stand at the door for her swords, table with armchair in the corner and finally - full body mirror. Gilda was a rare guest in her mother's room and always wondered - how long it took her to collect all of this? But that was not important right now. What was important is - she needed to be close today. There was always this warm feeling of comfort when Olga was close to her. At this moment, while Gilda kept eyeing the shelfs - Olga removed her swords, armor and half of her clothes. She stood in her pants at the door to the bathroom with her back pressed to the doorframe and balancing on one foot, trying to remove the pants. With a grunt she finally succeeded, throwing them at the basket for dirty clothes. This attracted attention of Gilda, and no more than a second later she started to remove her armor as well, remembering - why she was here. "You can lay them on the table, hun. There is nothing important." - Said Olga, leaning on the doorframe. - "While you keep undressing - I'm gonna steam the bathroom. Join me when you finish." - With that - the woman entered the bathroom and closed the door behind her. Couple of seconds later the sound of running water can be heard trough the door. No doubt she would put a whole bath for both of them. In a few minutes Gilda finally removed the last part of her clothes. Her skin was a pleasant peach colour, her undergarments was simple and practical. Ellastic bandage around her chest that tighten her breast and a simple white panties. Entering the bathroom - she was hit with the heat wave and the steam of a hot room. In the bath, in a relaxing pose laid Olga with a content smile. Her chest steadily risen and fallen with her breathing. Not wasting any more time - Gilda removed her bondage and panties, leaving them at the floor and carefully stepping into the massive bath. Olga looked up to young grif with the same content smile and offered her a hand to steady herself. She took her mother's hand and lowered her body into the water, leaning on womans chest with her back. The wave of calmness washed over Gilda, she let out steady relaxed breath, scooting closer to Olga. "Hmm... I almost forgot how good it is to take a bath together, dear. It was so fun back at the time." - Olga stated, hugging Gilda around her belly and laughing silently, continue to talk at a half-whisper -"When you was just a little troublemaker, running around with giddy smile. And now look at you! You grew up so much and became a beautiful, strong griffin. If you could even begin to fathom - how proud you make me every day... but I'm ramble too much, let's clean each other and go to bed. We have a lot of work tomorrow." "Mom, I wanna ask you something..." - When Olga didn't say anything - Gilda took it as a sign to continue - "It was always you and me. Didn't you ever fallen for somegriffin?" "I'm afraid not, my dear. As much as it would bring me joy for you to have a full family - I didn't fallen in love with anybody. One day I will, Gilda. And I hope she would love you as much as I love you, while you hopefully do the same." Reaching comfortable silence - Olga started to scrub Gilda's back, while she worked on her front. With a relaxing half an hour of bathing - mother and daughter was laying on the bed together, wearing their nightgowns. Gilda being little spoon pressed her back to the Olga's front. Hugging her daughter from behind - older woman pressed her nose into the crook of her daughter's neck, whispering - "I love you, Gilda." Gilda's whole body was shaken with goosebumps from such sweet words, so she responded with a silent - "I love you too, mom." - Both holding a content smile - they fell into the states of a calm sleep full of dreams. Author's Note It was my first try on writing something. As you can see by my vast numbers of errors - I'm not a native speaker. But I will try to improve my skills. With that, the "pilot" chapter is finished, I hope you enjoyed and will come back for more. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 2 //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 2 *** After restful night, both Gilda and Olga awoke at 6 in the morning. After putting on their armor - each of them begins their morning routines - Gilda goes for a run to wake up and do a little training on the backyard of their house afterwards, while Olga writes down notes for her second in command to what to do in her absence and where she will be. After she's done with paperwork - time for her own warm up for the day. Meditation to clear her mind and keep her thoughts collected, then some cardio, including stretching, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups on the bar, then a quick shower. After all the exercises was finished - pack her stuff which is not too much, but some things like almanac of the beast's and couple of enchanted amulets are needed. When Gilda finished her warm-up - she too took a quick shower and they both sat for the breakfast - oatmeal with fruits and a strong tea with dried berries. When breakfast was finished - Gilda ventured to her room for packing up her bag, while Olga was gone for their neighbours - small family of three. Currently, Olga was at the door of her neighbors. She lifted her hand and knocked at the door three times. After a couple of seconds door slowly opened and presented little chick, maybe 10-11 years old. She had chocolate-like curly hair, expressive big blue eyes. On her little frame was cream-colored dress with open shoulder's and little cute sandals. Looking up at Olga - her eyes lit up and with a big smile she jumped up, hugging woman's waist. "Auntie Olga!" - little chick happily exclaimed, while Olga picked her up under her armpits ando lift her up, kissing her on the cheek with a smile then lowering her after the greeting. "Morning, sweetie. I need to talk to your parents about something important. Can you call them over for me, please?" - she nods in reply energetically, running off inside the house. In a few minute adult female griffin came outside with questionable expresion. Spotting Olga she smiled at her, coming closer and giving a greeting in form of a hug. "Olga! It's good to see you. What's up?" - she asked cheerful, taking a step back after she hugged her. She wore a long robe and judging by her still wet hair - she recently was at the bathroom. "Sorry for interrupting your morning, Grace, but I need your help. The King sending me to Equestria to establish Beasthunters Guild for ponies and it could take a lot of time, from 4 to 5 years. Could you look for my house while I'm gone? I will try and visit every couple of months, even pay you for this with no problems." - Olga said with tired expression. The more she thought about Equestria - the more she disliked that idea. "Equestria?!" - Grace exclamed surprised - "Damn, this sounds like Tartarus, Olga. I'm not envy you. But sure, I'll look for your house. My little Galia will miss you dearly. You like second mom to her." "Don't remind me. I was content to stay in Griffonia for at least another 20 years if not more." - she huffed annoyed at her predicament, but give her neighbor a thankful smile - "Thank you, Grace. You are a life savior. Here... for the help." - She gave Grace total of 10 golden talons. The coins were as it said, gold, with a picture of a talon on one side and a main palace of Griffonia on the other. "By the great ancestors, Olga! I'm helping you, take the money back!" - Grace exclamed, trying to give talons back. "No. This is my thanks for your help. After all, your little one can use a couple of new toys..." - Olga said with a mirth in her tone. "Ya, couple hundreds of toys! Damn, I could buy new set of furniture for the house and throw a loud party for the whole neighborhood using the change!" - Grace almost screamed. "Well there you are, a good plan to spend the money - furniture and a party. I guess you need to contact the local sellers for your order." - Olga winked at her, smirking. "I swear, Olga. Sometimes I can't even deal with your manners." - She exhaled, putting the coins in the pocket of her robe. - "Alright, I will look after your house. The spare key is in my room." "Don't swear, there's a youngling in the house." - She laughed, seeing the annoyed face of Grace. - "Jokes aside, thanks again, Gracie. I'll send you a letter when I'm in Equestria so you will know - where am I if something happens. Take care, dear. Hug Galia and Greg for me, alright?" "Sure, Olga. Take care and good luck. I'm gonna treat Galia something tasty after her school to lift her spirit." - Grace waved her goodbye and closed the door. After one thing was finished and she had some time - Olga decided to personally talk to her second in command in the Guild. The building of the Guild was at the edge of Griffinstone, so it would take around 15 minutes to get there. Luckily - she skipped her morning run and her legs could use a little stretch... *** Morning in the Griffinstone was a pleasant sight. Shops are starting to open for the new day, couple of residents can be seen in the cafe at the outside tables, reading morning press and enjoying their coffee or tea, guards changing, releasing the night shift for the day shift to take it's place. Walking down the street - Olga smiled and waved to a couple of the shopkeepers, gaining waves and "good morning's" in reply on her way. The street ends with a two-story building, one of the Hunters on the right side of the door leaning his back on the wall, crossing his hands on the chest. He was an adult grif with short wheat colored hair and purple eyes, almost as tall as her. Spotting Olga he stood up straight and gave her a small smile. "Good morning, Headmaster." - he said with a neutral tone and a polite smile. "Morning, Gabe. Not even 9 in the morning and you already being a lazy bum? New record." - She asked him in a joking tone. Banter and ribinning amongst the Hunters was one of the best ways to relax and to relive some stress, drinking being the second best. "Yeah..." - He stretched his arms up and put them behind his head - "Although, judging by your presence - my record was broken. Usually you already cover your blade with blood and it's still dry, if my eyes are not lying to me." "Hah! One day you will be witty enough so someone will smack you with something heavy or sharp. Not me tho, and not today. Say, second in command is here?" - she crossed her arms under her breasts with raised eyebrow. "Yeah, he's in here. I'm gonna go take a walk around town - see if any beast got caught in my traps. Have a good day, Headmaster." - With that he lowered his hands and was off to do his rounds. Walking inside the Guild - Olga was greeted by more members that was preparing for the day or waiting for their partners. Sharpeneng their blades, checking their equipment or just talking with occasional laugh. The sight was pleasant for the eyes of Olga. Everygrif was ready to do their job, all of them acted like a one big family. They would help each other if needed without a second thought. When she was spotted - the Hunters beamed and greeted her with a friendly "good morning's", to wich she nodded with a friendly smile and walked to the stairs that leaded on the second floor. She walked up and to the office of second in command Greyhide and politely knocked, entering the room. Greyhide was really tall and bulky, with a broad shoulders. Giant among griffins. The only one in the Guild that could look down at Olga because of his height. While Greyhide was 6.7ft tall (206 cm) - Olga is 6.2 (192 cm). He was sitting behind the table, looking trough the documents, but immediately stands up when she enters. "Good morning, Greyhide." - She greeted him with a polite smile. He smiled back and lowered himself down, Olga walked to the table and sit at the edge of it. "Morning, Headmaster. Whats up?" - he asked in a deep, manly voice. He had a grey medium length hair with a small ponytail and evenly trimmed grey beard and mustache. His eyes were dim blue. Olga opened her tube for documents and gave the king's letter to him for examination. He took it, holding the parchment with both hands while scanning the text. The further he read it - the more preplexed and angry he became, until he slammed the latter on the table, looking at Olga. - "Tell me this is some kind of a fucked up joke, Olga!" - he loudly pleaded her. - "The King knows that you and ponies don't mix well. Even if that was only the case, but 'create the Beasthunters Guild for ponies' and Goldclaw approved it? Why?!" "I wish it was a joke, Greyhide. I was at the same state like you right now in the mayor's office yesterday." - She answered dejectedly. - "Either way - I can't say anything. The council and the king made it an order. So I will leave Griffonia with Gilda in about..." - She looked at the office wall clock. - "...2 hours. I prepared a list for you of what to do and who to contact for submitting documented reports. I should be going right now, Greyhide. Good luck." - She gives him said list and collected the letter, putting it inside the tube and sealing in. "Ancestors, give me strength... I wish you good luck, Olga. I hope everything will be alright." - Greyhide said with a sad tone. "Aww, chin up, Greyhide. I will be going back from time to time for a check up." - She answered, winking at him with a cheery smile and jumping down on her feet. With that she left the key from her office and a safe with documents on his table and left the office. With only a hour before the train - Olga should make her way back home and ready herself for the upcoming journey and work. *** The train was peacefully chugging along on the rails with a couple of griffins in separate booths. Olga came back to the wholesome interaction between Gilda and her friend Gabrielle. They were sitting outside on the front porch, but noticing Olga, they understood that it's time to say goodbye, for now at least. Both human and griffin took their bags and headed to the station, where they entered the train cart and then their booth, where we find them now. Whole journey promised to be an interesting experience for both Gilda and her mother. For Gilda it would be an experience in unfamiliar environment and actual hunting with and without her mother, instead of a group practice and lectures. For Olga this could be a way to dispel her worries and forgive ponies for their mistakes in the past towards her and the griffins in general. On the road to train station - Olga asked her daughter to be professional and call her Headmaster while adressing her in the presence of other ponies. Right now they were headed to closest Equestrian city - Manehattan. It's a huge city with a population of various races, such as ponies, griffins, taurens and draconoids. They will be there for half an hour and then will head to Poniville with a stop in Canterlot. Olga hoped, that the stop at Canterlot would be short. She know for a fact that Canterlot is a city of nobles. Even Griffinstone nobles, being level-headed individuals for the most parts, could sometimes piss her off. Canterlot nobility would make that even faster without a doubt. While they were on the road - Olga and Gilda would converse on a different topics to pass the time. "So... I wanted to ask you something. Why do you have that intolerance towards ponies? Did they done something bad or it's just their race in general." - Asked Gilda, sitting next to Olga. "I could give you a basic explanation of ponies, or my personal experience with them, if you up for my ramble." - With a nod of a Gilda's head - Olga smiled and cleared her throat. - "Ponies, as you know, comes to three types - pegasi, earthlings, and unicorns. All of the ponykind in their youth finds their calling and recives a 'cutie mark', which is the picture of what they good at on their left shoulder and hip. You already met pegasi in the Flight Camp, when you was at Cloudsdale. They have wings behind their backs and could control and create weather, usually have lean figure for flying. Earthlings, or earth ponies, the type that closest to the ground. They have good physical fitness and often taking a job of utility and production workers. Farmers, shopkeepers, teachers, heavy lifters and so on. They are plain and it's easy to understand their character. Unicorns..." - Olga said without a single drop of happiness in her voice. - "Are a type of ponies that posess magic. Telekinesis as their main spell, utility spells like restoration of object to previous state, battle spells like fireballs and creation of a protective fields around them. They are more of a thinking type, so because of that - their phisyce are not well developed, amongs civilians at least. Their distinctive feature is a straight or a little bit curved or bent horn in their forehead. Easy to understand so far?" - she asked, getting positive nod with an interest in her eyes. - "Before you became part of my life - Beasthunters done jobs for ponies in the nearest settlements to our borders. One time I leaded a small group of three Hunters on the contract. Citizens of a pony town called Shady Oaks, was suffering from timberwolfes attack. We came to the village, talked to the unicorn elder and was gone to the forest, where the beasts was spotted last time. It was a small but growing pack with strong alpha. We slayed them, collected their cores and eyes for later usage, cut off alphas head as a proof of the job's done and headed back to the town. Ponies met us with disgust and anger, saying that we're savages and they wanted us to lead the pack out of the forest, not kill them. I was in the middle of an argument with the elder about our pay when someone throw a rock at my head..." - She traced a small scar on the back of her head. -"I lost conscious and woke up in a couple of minutes, when other Hunters dragged me trough the forest to our borders. I was livid. I wanted to massacre this village but then I thought 'why kill them if they could do that themselves?' After we returned to Griffinstone - I submitted a report about what happened to the king in person. He said to stop offering our blades to ponies and do the job only in Griffonia. I happily agreed to that. In a couple of weeks a word comes to me, that ponies said to their Princess about 'Beasthunters that attacked border town because folks didn't pay them enough'. She belive her 'little ponies' and until now - I didn't set my boots on Equestrian soil since that day." - Olga finishes, exhaling. After couple of seconds - Olga looked down at Gilda. Young grif was furious. - "Now I understand why you dislike ponies that much and didn't wanted to go there... I would be too." "Gilda..." - The human said softly. - "It was some time ago and it was MY experience with ponykind. I'm actually intrested in going because maybe time changes some things and Griffin Beasthunters would not be met with such hospitality as they were back in the days. Besides- " - She kissed Gilda on the top of her head. - "You could form your own opinion. Just be careful, alright?" - Gilda took a deep breath and with an exhale look up and weakly smiled to her mother, hugging her waist with one hand. It was then the conductor announced their arrival at Manehattan. While they were at a half-hour stop - both griffin and human decided to have a little snack. Olga took yesterday's bread with some fresh salmon and some cold homemade raspberry juice. While they was finishing their snacks - the door to their booth was gently opened by a unicorn mare. She wore a long lilac dress with elegant shoes. Her long hair was pink and a mark of three fleur-de-lis. She looked at the pair with question and asked. - "Sorry for disruption, is there a places numbered 34-a and 34-b?" Olga looked across their seats, and sure thing, there was numbers in question. - "Yes, they are here." Unicorn mare smiled brightly and looked down the corridor where she's come from. - "Brother, I found our places! Come here!" - and with that she came inside, picking up her bag and putting it under her seat. After her entered a stallion with his own little suitcase. He wore a good looking suit, had a blue slick hair that comes down to his neck and a small mustache on his upper lip. When they were seated - Olga and Gilda already finished with their food at the time and was ready to either nap or read some of the Griffonia newspaper, when the stallion spoke up. "Excuse me, but... Are those longswords?" - he asked with interest. Olga looked at him with raised eyebrow, answering. - "Yes, they are." "I didn't know ponies could carry weapons inside the train... but judging by your identical costumes - you are far from normal passangers. But... Sorry for not introducing previosly. My name is Fancy Pants and this is my dear sister Fleur de Lis." - He gestured to the mare on the left, who's give's them a nod and a smile. "First of all, we're not ponies, we're griffins." - She said with neutral tone. - "Secondly - these are not costumes, but armor. As for our names - I'm Headmaster of Griffin Beasthunter's Guild, Olga. Beside me is one of my Hunters - Gilda." - Gilda gave them a nod with neutral expression. Both unicorns eyes opened with shock. They looked both of them over in awe. Fleur was first to recover from her stupor. - "You mean those hunters, that hunt down dangerous monsters as a job? Living the lives full of excitement and adventures? THOSE hunters?" - she asked excitedly. When Olga gave her a nod - the mare squeeled happily, to wich both Hunters cowered one of their ears. - "Oh my Celestia, I readed so much about Beasthunters!" Recovered from the loud noise - Olga asked her. - "What do you mean? Someone write about us?" - She asked surprised. "I studied history in university and found out about Beasthunters. How griffin's, both males and females trained to hunt down dangerous wild beast's and fell in love with them. But I thought that they ceased to exist around thirty years ago, because they were fused with regular guards." - She wondered. "I thought it was strange, too. Such fascinating group just joining regular guards? Sound's very strange." - Fancy Pants commented. "Huh, so that's what your story books tell you? I guess it's better than what actually happened. In some way I am thankful for that." - Olga admitted, crossing her hands on her chest. "What do you mean by that?" - Fleur asked her, leaning forward. - "Is there something different that actually happened?" "I would know, miss De Lis, I was there." - The woman said with small smile to the surprise of ponies. - "When the Guild acted as mercenaries for both Griffonia and Equestria - me and three other members took a contract from the village near our borders. We completed our part of a job but residents declined to pay us, saying that they wanted the beasts gone, not killed. While I was arguing with the elder someone throw a rock at me and knocked me out." - Fleur's and her brother's eyes widened. - "I woke up when we was chased out of the villge to our borders trough the forest. After we came back to Griffinstone - I submitted my report to the king and he said to stop offering our help to Equestria. Couple of weeks later we learned that the townfolk lied to Celestia, saying that the Beasthunters attacked the town because they didn't pay us enough. I guess she didn't belive them in the end, too. The Beasthunters Guild still exists and we do our job successfully." When Olga finishes - Fleur looked like she was smacked across the face, as well as Fancy. She stood up and walked around the small table. "Miss, on behalf of a ponies that wronged you and other Hunters - I sincerely apologise. There is no word's to express - how ashamed I am about this whole incedent." - She bowed her head. - "You can call me Fleur and know, that I would love to concider you a friend of mine, if you would accept my friendship." "Don't apologise, Fleur." - Olga stood up at her full hight to the astonished look of a mare with reddened cheeks. Looking down, into her pale-pink eyes - she gave her warm, gentle smile and rubbed her shoulder. - "It was not your fault, but... your kind words are very appreciated. Know that I, Olga Von Everek, concider you my friend." As this words left her lips - Fleur's look changed from astonishment to shellshocked. - "You mean that... that... you are THE griffin Goddess of War?.. I held a conversation with Lady Von Everek and she considered me a friend?... oh my..." - And with that - Fleur's eyes fluttered and she started to fall, only for Olga and Fancy to catch her and let her lie down on her side of the booth. *** Turns out that the name Olga Von Everek known very well among not only griffin's, but ponies too, especially those who studied history and members of the guard. After Fleur regain her senses and another freak-out to the amusement of both Olga and Gilda - there was a lot to talk about. Fleur was asking a lot of questions about historical incedents and the everyday life of Olga. Mainly about the life of a 'legendary historical figure'. She was surprised to know - how both Gilda and Olga lived so simple. Gilda of course joined in on the corvensation, telling about her routine of the day as well. To say both Fancy and Fleur was surprised about the fact that Gilda was adopted and raised by Olga was an understatement. When the conductor announced the arrival at Canterlot and that the stop would be for a whole hour - Fancy invited both Hunters for a lunch and promised, that their true identities would be hidden in the public. They thanked both of them, accepting their invitation. Right now their group of four walked down the streets of Canterlot, Fancy leading them. Beasthunters decided to not leave their backpacks on the train and took them along. Olga was cautious, looking at her sides and listening in at conversations around their group. She and Gilda was foreigners in Equestria, thus adding fuel to her state. Fleur noticed this. "You looking tense, Olga. What's wrong?" - She whispered to her, leaning closer to her ear. "I'm just being on guard. Sure, Celestia asked our king to help Equestria with monsters, but something tells me that it's not that simple. I had a thought that she would use this as an opportunity to had a rematch, but at the same time, maybe she wanted to apologise for her ponies. After what you and Fancy told me about your history this is a possible reason as well. This feeling of unknown is pushing my nerves to their limits. I'd rather charge into a fight with some dangerous beast's than just wait for something, that even I don't know what, to happen." - She whispered back, clenching her fists, looking around with her eyes, slightly turning her head in different directions. "I see. I can't dispel your worries, but recommend you to relax. Even if what you say is true - someone would notify you that Princess Celestia wanted to meet you." - She patted her arm reassuringly. Fancy Pants suddenly stopped, as well as all members of our group. Before us was a group of guards in golden armor. At the head of their group stood a unicorn mare without a helmet. She had deep blue hair with cyan streaks, sapphire eyes and was holding a round shield with spear. "Good day, Lieutenant Shield." - Fancy greeted her, politely nodding. - "How can I help?" "Good day, Sir Fancy. I was given a report, stating that you came back from your trip with two armored griffins. Please step aside, so we could esort them to the station for questioning." - She stated firmly. "Why am I not surprised at this?" - Said Olga, motion for her daughter to stay behind. Stepping forward from the group, she recives worried looks of all three of her companions. - "Unfortunately, lieutenant, our train will depart in less than an hour and we was invited by Miss De Lis and Sir Fancy Pants to dine with them. When we finish - we will leave Canterlot and preferably not going to return. So please, step aside and let us continue our walk. Lieutenant eyed Olga a couple of seconds, before answering. - "Not a chance, griffin. Either you and that other griffin comes with us peacefully, or you will be arrested." In return for this treat - Olga lowered her backpack on the ground and tilted her head, producing a loud crack. One Beasthunter versus five guards. This will be interesting. The human changer her posture, ready for unsheathing her swords. - "Care to try me, missy?" Unicorn mare readied her shield and advanced forward, pointing her spear at Beasthunter before her. With a few moments to spare - Olga dashed forward, already holding her longsword with one hand. Lowering herself to evade a spear thrust - she slashed the spear in half, kicking the shield with left shoulder. Lieutenant took a step back, but Olga grabbed with her free hand the side of a shield and smacked the mare in the face with it's top, producing a grunt. With a pirouette around lieutenant - she hit her on the back with right elbow, making her to loose balance and trip over human's leg, falling face first on the ground. Pressing her into the ground with a foot on the side of her neck - Olga looked at other four guards with a small grin, baring her teeth a little bit. Oh, now they were scared. No wonder they can't fend for themselfs aginst something bigger as scaven. Olga lowered her sword, plunging the tip into the earth, couple of inches from Shield's face, her right hand at the top of a handle. - "Your confidence is admirable. Unfortunately, poor execution of your skills. Now I understand - why Celestia asked me to come..." Not daring to move because of fear and a foot pressed on her neck - Shield spoke up. - "Ngh.. you were invited..?" - it was getting hard to breath. "Yes, she was invited, Lieutenant Shield." - Came calm, but stern regal voice from her back-left. Turning her head - Olga noticed new figure between her guards. A small crowd was formed around the participants. She was like Olga remembered her. A little bit taller than herself, long white horn on her forehead, hair with the colours of the aurora, deep blue eyes. She was wearing a tight white dress with regal gold tiara on her head and gorgeous white wings behind her back. She cleared her throat in her fist and spoke. - "Olga, if you would be so kind to stop toying with the lieutenant of my guard and come with me, along with your subordinate - we could start discussing the reasons of your invite to Equestria." Her grin gone, replaced with neutral smile, she remove her foot from the neck of the lieutenant, letting the poor mare to breath freely with a couple of coughs, her sword returned to designated sheath. She took a step aside from the mare, looking directly in Celestia's eyes. - "Not just toying, Celestia. Teaching on the way." - Small frown crossed alicorn's face. - "Now I understand why you asked King Goldclaw for my assistance. Give me a moment." - She turned to her grop. Fleur was blushing, turning her eyes away, Fancy had the look of amazement, and Gilda had a little glints in her eyes with a smile, that only children had for their parents. Picking up her backpack - she called out to them. - "Sorry Fancy, Fleur, I think we will meet some other day for lunch. Gilda, come on. We don't want to keep her majesty waiting, right?" - She winked, producing a small giggle from young grif. With that, both human and griffin came closer to Celestia. She smiled guiltily at Olga, leading the way to the castle, while guards helped their recovering lieutenant. Author's Note Hello to everyone who is reading this story. First of all - thank you for the time you spend on this fic. Secondly - little bit of insight. While I enjoy writing this story so far - I need to put my mind to something else. Don't worry, I will not abandon this story, no. The reason for this is my imagination. I can't constantly keep my mind on one thing and will think about different topics. So here's how this is going to work - I will post at least one chapter per month for both fics. That way I will not be under stress and write something in the story that just plain boring. I hope you understand it. Keep calm and stay cool, see you soon. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 3 //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 3 *** Castle of Canterlot was impressive, regal like the the ruler of the Day. She didn't had the opportunity to meet her sister, but judging by Celestia - she could be, and probably is, beautiful. Celestia led both of them trough the halls of her home, greeting staff on the way, while guards stood at attention. They ended up at the doors of Celestia's meeting room, where was already seated a couple of individuals. Judging by the regal clothes on one of them and an armor on the second - they were some kind of an important individuals. An alicorn mare with pink mane and... lieutenant Shield's twin brother. The unicorn are glaring and frowning at me, while pink haired alicorn just smiling. We were seated on the left from Celestia, while those two on the right. Clearing her throat, the white alicorn started. - "First of all, I would like to thank you, Olga, for coming in such short time. Myself and Princess Luna talked about how we could solve our problems with-" - Olga raised her hand suddenly, asking for speaking. Celestia silenced herself and gestured for a human to talk. "I readed the letter, Celestia. I get that your country suffering with monsters and judging by..." - She tried to pick a more suited words. - "...less than adequate performance of your lieutenant - I can see why." - Gilda silently giggled from that, while unicorn stallion seems to became even angrier. - "I can even understand the reason for creating Guild in Equestria, even if this sounds idiotic. What I CAN'T understand, however, is why are you glaring at me?" - She pointed at the unicorn in front of her with a nod of the head, crossing her arms under her breasts. - "What, am I your arch nemesis, I killed your dog, broke your toy in kindergarten, what do you want? "Olga, please..." - Celestia pleaded. "Auntie, I think I can answer that one. Ahem, good day, my name is Mi Amore Cadenza, or shortly Cadance. I am the Princess of Love and next to me is Shining Armor - captain of the Royal Guard." - Cadance politely said with gentle smile. "Miss Cadance... Are you by any chance know about our job or who we are?" - Olga asked her. "I'm afraid I don't. If it's not too hard - please introduce yourself." - Cadance politely asked, while unicorns frowns lessened a bit. "I forgive your ignorance. My name is Olga Von Everek, Headmaster of Griffin Beasthunters Guild. On my right is my assistant - Gilda. We hail from Griffinstone where our Guild is posted. Our job is to make sure no monsters and/or beasts attack civilians of Griffonia. Does that explains - who are we and what we do?" - The woman asked. Both unicorn and alicorn were very surprised, but didn't fall into the stupor. - "I... didn't knew this Guild is still present. Our history books states that they were absorbed by country's military. And to answer your other question - Lieutenant Shield is a twin sister of Captain Armor and older sister of the Element of Magic - Twilight Sparkle." - Cadance said, while Shining Armor looked like he was digesting information that he just recived. "I don't know as well - why this was written, but this is a conversation for another time. I'm going to apologise to your lieutenant later, she did her job after all. Right now I want to know - what are we dealing with." - Olga looked at Celestia. Celestia exhaled and with a small glow of her horn summoned a small folder before Guildmaster. - "The most of the beasts comes from the large forest called Evergreen, near the village of Poniville. The forest is populated with usual wild creatures and monsters, such as timberwolfes, manticores, cockatrices and hydras. Latter of lives in the southern part of the forest, area called Boggy Bottom Swamp. I'm asking for you and your subordinate to guard the town and lower the population of monsters. Later, when the Guild is built - train ponies in the art of hunting. You will be provided with a small cabin to use as temporary base." "Hmm... I can do that, but what about our pay? We can't sustain ourselves with just our savings." - Answered Olga, looking trough documents from the folder. Scouting reports and photos, this looks promising already. "There is three cities around Poniville : Horseshoe Bay, Appaloosa and, of course, Canterlot. All of the bounty papers from these cities will be sent to the mayor of Poniville, where she will give them to you via mail or in person. Guards will be notified to assist you with reasonable requests if needed and will not interfere with your investigations. You and young Gilda will be presented with a special ticket so you don't have to pay every time for the train ride." - Celestia answered, looking at much calmer looking Shining Armor and returning her calm gaze to Olga. - "After the contract is completed - mayor of Poniville will pay you for your work." "I agree to this terms, but let me clarify some things. First of all - if it turns out that a contract is for a sentient being like lycans, ponies, griffins etc. - I'm passing them to the guards. We are hunting for beasts and monsters, not bandits. If we encounter them and being threatened - we will defend ourselves, but not actively hunting them down. Secondly - we are here primarily for work and if someone will ask us for a social gathering - we can pass them without a fuss. Thirdly - we are mercenaries here on your behlf and would take only direct orders from you, Princess Luna or Princess Mi Amore Cadenza with a personal meeting or signed letter, other guards will not command us to do something. Does that sound fair?" "Yes, that is more than fair, Lady Von Everek." - Celestia smiled, standing up. Olga followed her movements and they shook their hands. - "Will you stay for the night? I'm sure my sister would love to meet you." "Unfortunately no, we need to get to Poniville and start working. Many of the more dangerous beasts are nocturnal and I prefer to..." Olga couldnt finish her thought as the doors to the room was rudely opened by a unicorn mare with pale skin and long golden mane. She was roughly a little bit older than Gilda, but too well cared, if her silk-like curls and the look of superiority in her eyes was any indication. Spotting Celestia she started walking to her, opening her mouth and speaking in an obnoxious high pitch voice. - "Auntie! I was looking everywhere for you. Why are you didn't invite me to this gathering?" For those who was sitting at the table - emotions were split in a great range. Celestia looked somewhat embarrassed, Shining and Cadance were avoiding looking at the mare and there was displeased look in their faces, Gilda cringed at the high voice of the new person in the room and only Olga had one of her brow raised at the newcomer. "Your position involves in the problems of nobility, dear Line." - Answered Celestia, adoring a small frown on her face. - "As you can see - aside from our guests from Griffonia there is Captain Armor and Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, which means there is no use of your presence during our discussions." The mare just snorted in displeasure, before answering. -"Hmpf! What could be so important to discuss with those griffins? If they were somepony important - you would call all the members of the Court. And why you allowed them to bare weapons?!" "And you are?..." - Voiced her question Olga, looking at this intruding mare. "Silence, griffin. You're not have been asked. Answer only when you are questioned." - The entitled mare snapped. It felt like somewhere in the room a glass window just cracked. Olga looked at the pale mare who bore a winning smirk for a couple of seconds, while two alicorns and one captain were watching them both with horrified expression, while young chick just blankly stared at Line. After five, unbearably long, seconds, Olga calmly stood up from her place and took her bag, after what slowly walking to the doors, and stopping at the place where Celestia sat, her eyes almost begging her to stay behind that emotional mask she always wore. "I belive it's time for us to go, Princess. Thank you for your hospitality. Come, Gilda. We could still catch our train." - Gilda nodded with haste, understanding that her mother was incredibly pissed off and if they don't walk away now - there would be trouble. She grabbed her bag as well and came to the doors, waiting for Olga. The woman has focused her eyes straight in front of her, not even looking at others in the room, but unexpectedly to Celestia - giving her a short message in sign language before leaving the room in silence. Both captain and the Sun Diarch had very disturbed looks after that for the next half an hour. - "Next time I will not hold myself." *** Leaving the Castle with the help of guards - both Gilda and Olga returned to the train station, where their train already departed, but soon will came another one to the same destination. They had an hour of downtime, so they sat at the station's bench, where Olga would braid a small pigtail on the back of Gilda's head. This was relaxing for Olga and young griff loved when her mother braided her hair. It reminded her of the old times, when Gilda was a little chick, acting like a brave lass in the daylight, but hiding in her mother's embrace when it was a storm at night. The found memories was always tresured by young Beasthunter. As for Olga - she could not stop thinking about the day she and Gilda had so far. Changed history, surprisingly pleasant conversation with Fleur and Fancy, fight with the lieutenant and... that mare. She made her blood boil. Like those in the suicide attacks, like the death row inmates during the war with minotaurs. At least in that time it was an easy choice for them : either die for their crimes as cowards and scum in the cortyard or charge the enemies and redeem themselfs by sacraficing their lives. That law was very effective in teaching citizens about concicuences of their actions. After all - the death penalty would be given to those who have something to do with children. Abuse of minors, child molestation, slavery, murder of yet unborn... this would definitely get you the death penalty. If not by execution, the other convics would see to it that you will die. You may steal, you may do drugs, you may kill and life in prison could be bearable... but if word gets around the block that there is a griff with a brand of a crime related to minors - you are goin to die. Painfully. And nobody will help you. Olga was deep in her thoughts when someone approach both Beasthunter's that were sitting alone. To the surprise of Olga and Gilda - it was no other than Lunar Diarch herself. She bore a somewhat sad expression on her face and Olga was right - she was beautiful. Princess Luna slowly approached both of them. Surprisingly enough - she didn't wore anything dress-like. On her smooth bluish body was a pair of official-looking pants, white blouse and a pair of low heeled shoes in black. She looked at Gilda, then at Olga, closed her eyes and took a deep breath, calming her nerves and then spoke. "Lady Von Everek. I am deeply ashamed about behaviour of my niece Royal Line and I am asking you to excuse her on behalf of her youth and inexperience with other races of Equis. After you left a was woken up by Royal Canterlot Voice of my sister, dressing down Royal Line. After I heard what had transpired - I..." - Luna was stopped by Olga's raised hand. "Princess... If there was any other representative of the foreign country in my and my assistant's place - they would be more vindictive that I am. I have given my warning that next time I will not tolerate such behaviour and left to not loose my temper to miss Line's words. But I will keep my promise if she do not change her attitude. I gave her one chance to better herself." - Answered Olga, holding her gloved hands on Gilda's shoulder's. Luna exhaled and sat down next to Olga, dipping her crownless head a little bit down. Olga in turn sat up and put her right hand on Luna's shoulder. - "Hey..." - She started softly, adoring more warm look in her eyes. - "I'm not mad at you, Princess, and I will not hate you for other's actions. You could still talk to me or Gilda if you interested in something." "Then... By any chance could you call me Luna, Lady Von Everek?" - The Lunar Diarch raised her head a little, looking at Olga with eyes full of hope. In return, Olga just smiled softly to her, giving out a small chuckle and lightly squeezing her shoulder. - "Only if you call me Olga." Princess Luna nodded to her, giving a small smile in return. - "Could this mean that... I could consider you a friend, Olga?" "It's too early to call each other friends, Luna..." - At those words, Luna's smile fell. - "...but. You can say that we are on friendly terms. It is a step from a complete strangers, after all." Luna's smile returned to her face and she nodded, looking past Olga, to Gilda. - "I'm happy to meet you too, young griffin. What is your name?" "Oh, it's... it's Gilda. A pleasure." - Stumbled Gilda, giving her hand to Luna for a handshake, which Luna happily returned. Luna glanced at the station's clock, frowning a little, but then smiling to Beasthunters. "Oh, I have to return, Olga and Gilda. I have some business to attend. It was a delight to meet you both." *** They said their goodbyes and soon boarded the newly arrived train. It was 5pm, when they were almost at the Poniville station. Gilda had some naptime, while Olga tended to documents Celestia gave her at the table earlier that day. She looked trough those papers and photos more carefully, looking at the clues of what potential dangers they might face in near future and making a mental list of what she would need in terms of tools. Most of it she already had on her, but a couple of things she would need to gather in the forest. When the train pulled to the station - Olga flinched and looked trough the glass window of their cart. It was unmistakable feeling of possessed being somewhere near her. A sense that skilled Beasthunters would develop trough time in their line of work. She weren't even settled in their temporary base and there is already a problems. She lightly nudged Gilda with her elbow, making the young griff to look at her. Using sighn language she alerted Gilda. - "There is a possessed one nearby. Stay sharp." Gilda frown for a second and nodded, changing her face to a neutral one. They gathered their luggage and left the cart and then disembark the train. There was couple of ponies around the station. A mare greeting her stallion with a loving kiss on the lips. An old mare ruffling the small head of a colt, probably grandmother and her grandkids while a couple stands nearby. A group of mares looking at all directions, must be just onlookers... wait, there is a mare with rainbow colored hair. She spotted us and called out to her group. And here is the possessed one... Olga slowly reached to a pair of small but weighty stones on her right hip, locking eyes with every member of the group, while they aproach them, the rainbow colored one running faster to Gilda. "Gilda!" - The mare called, attracting Gilda's attention, to which young griff smiled and walked to her direction. "Rainbow! Oh, how long has it been?!" - They hugged each other, only then Rainbow noticed the unusual appearance of her friend, taking a step back. - "G, what's with the get-up? Are you some kind of a super-soldier in Griffonia? And who's this?" - She nodded to Olga, who's eyed the pink maned mare with caution. "Oh, um... this is..." - Gilda couldn't finish her sentence, because Olga put her left hand on griffin's shoulder and calmly said 'pink one', after wich Gilda's head whipped to pink mare with puffy hair and sweater. Pink mare couldn't react as her body was tied up with a powerful ties of thrown bola and tackled to the ground by griff. Olga was at her in an instant, putting a wide ring of runes on the ground around the three of them. Others on the platform could just stare a this in shocked surprise while both Beasthunters worked. "Show yourself." - Said Olga with a hard tone in her voice. While puffy pink mare tried to wiggle herself out of the binds - she snarled and clenched her jaw. Trough her teeth the saliva in her mouth and on her teeth changed and instead of a semi-clear turned sickly red. Olga turned tied pony on her side, while saying in commanding tone. - "Stay out of the circle!" Pink mare started to cough like there is something stuck in her throat. Couple of more hard, wet coughs and she spewed out the contest of her stomach, along with an mango-sized glob of red slime. Said slime quickly tried to escape, jumping like a disgustingly disformed toad, but was stopped by the rune circle and like a ball of slime it is slides down on the floor. Pouring a generous amount of silver dust in her hand from the poach on her belt - Olga throw it like a snowball in the glob, which make it start to produce bubbles as he boiled and producing a sick smell of rotten meat and an old bile. Those who still was at platform pinched their noses and a fair amount of ponies emptied their stomachs on the ground. When the sick glob was nothing more than a puddle of steaming red substance - Olga released a sigh of relief and for a good measure poured some strong alcohol on it, making the smell mostly replaced. The pink pony was limply laid on the ground, still breathing. It was a good sight. The silence was interrupted with Rainbow screaming at the top of her lungs. "WHAT THE ACTUAL BUCK WAS THAT?!" - She looked at both Gilda and Olga with shock. "Um... h-hey, RD. Allow me to introduce you to my mom - Guildmaster of Griffonia Beasthunters Guild - Olga Von Everek." The pale mare with purple curled hair, purple mare with violet hair, butter-yellow mare with pink hair lost their consciousness on the spot, while Rainbow's jaw figuratively hit the floor. Author's Note Sorry for the delay. Had a little block with this chapter and I'm still thinking that it's missing something (jokes about that I need an editor is acceptable). As always - don't be afraid to tell me your constructive criticism about my work. Stay cool. //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 4 //-------------------------------------------------------// Chapter 4 *** It was a calm evening in Poniville. Sun was setting down and citizens of Poniville were either coming from work to have some family time or came out on the streets to have a little walk. The public library of this town was a very popular spot this evening. There were six mares and one draconoid, among with two griffins under one roof. Three ponies were still unconscious after what happened on the station. The one named Twilight Sparkle introduced all members of their little group of friends, while they were seated at the table and drinking tea. The one named Pinkie Pie, that was possessed, was undergo some minor, but netherless noticeable changes. Her mane changed from puffy pink to wavy bleak pink, as well as her skin paled a little bit. She still looked like the mare that was always smiling, but now there is something different in her, more mature. Two others that were out cold was a local animal caretaker by the name of Fluttershy and fashionista named Rarity. They lost their consciousness during the incedent. Most of the ponykind are too sheltered for that kind of things, thought Olga. Those who still had their wits were Rainbow Dash - Gilda's friend from Flight Camp, owner of apple orchard 'Sweet Apple Acres' - Applejack and a librarian of the 'Golden Oaks Library' and a personal student of Celestia - Twilight Sparkle. Other than that - there was a young draconoid female named Barb, assistant of Twilight. After Celestia's protégé introduced her friends and herself - it was Beasthunters turn. "Well, my name is Gilda. I'm an old friend of Rainbow from the Flight Camp. Originally I wanted to visit her couple of days later, but... there was some important buisness in Equestria, so we were sent to help your country." "Ya, 'bout that. Mind telling us what was that darn thang?" - Asked Applejack with a shudder. "Yes, I never read about something like that. Was that some kind of a parasite? Perhaps a semi-sentient sickness?" - Twilight followed the farm mare's question. "Umm... It's better to ask mom..." - Gilda mumbled. "Uh, yeah, about that. Who is she, G? You said that she is your mom, right?" - Rainbow asked Gilda, sitting closer to her. "Aww, that is just so sweet." - Olga smiled kindly. - "I never thought that you would let someone give you a nickname beside Gabby and myself." - At that, young griffin's cheeks flushed red and her eyes lowered at the table. - "But besides that, yes. I am Gilda's mother, Olga Von Everek." "Wait... Do you mean The Olga Von Everek? Former general of Griffonian army, The Goddess of War? THAT OLGA?!" - Almost yelled Barb, bulging her eyes out at that woman. At her small smile and nod Barb practically leaped out of her seat, running around the table and taking Olga's hand in both of her scaled, purple ones, vigorously shaking it. - "OH MY CELESTIA! IT'S AN HONOR, LADY VON EVEREK!" Mares, who were at the table looked confused at draconoid. Twilight especially, since turns out - she was in presence of somebeing important and knew nothing. She attempted to coax some pointers at who this Olga were. "Umm, Barb?" - Started Twilight hesitantly. - "What do you mean by 'The Goddess of War'?" Barb looked at Twilight like she just slapped her. - "Twi, I'm surprised somepony like you don't know history. Lady Von Everek is like, I dunno, living piece of Griffonian history! She defeated Princess Celestia in a fencing duel, thus ending Griffonia-Equestrian War almost 500 years ago, preventing what would be a massive battle. She was acting general of Griffonian army for 14 years, under her command Griffonia won the 3 Years War against minotaurs, dubbed 'Twelve Bloody Seasons'. She created Griffin Beasthunters Guild that hunt down dangerous monsters. She's basically reinvented alchemy. Twilight, she's legend!" - During that speech Barb didn't even let go of Olga's hand, while she herself had a small smirk. Ponies in the room looked shocked at what they just heard. There, before them, were seated someone that had so many accomplishments and yet she looked like it didn't even bothered her. If Olga were a pony - she would definitely boast about her deeds like almost any other noble of Canterlot. And yet, she didn't even noted what she done. In the meantime - Olga was looking at Barb with a sly smirk. "Oh my, young Barb. I didn't knew I had such educated admirer. You flatter me." - Said Olga in a sweet, yet cheeky tone, looking between Barb's face and her hands that still holded her own, imitating a fish out of water. Barb, realising that she holded her arm for the whole time quickly released her and with haste and an enbarrassment written on her face retreated to her seat, hugging her legs and hiding her head with a green short hair in her knees. Couple of seconds later Dash shook her head and looked at Gilda. - "Wow, G... I didn't knew your mom is so... bucking... cool..." - She breathlessly said the last part with genuine admiration. - "But... Why the both of you here? Does someone asked your help?" "Hired. Someone hired us, Rainbow Dash." - Answered Olga, looking at prismatic mare. - "Precisely, Celestia asked our king a permission to hire me for the job in Equestria. Myself and Gilda will be in this town for the next couple of years, while Beasthunters Guild in this town would be built. Then, I will teach selected ponies on how to do our job in Equestria. That's about it." "So... that means - you and Gilda will be here for a long time?" - Hopefully asked Dash. "Yes, Dash. We'll be here for next couple of years. Mom will come back from time to time to Griffonia because of her position." - Said Gilda, to the amusement of Olga. "That's... that's actually pretty cool! Oh, I can't wait to tell you about adventures that me and my friends had so far." - Rainbow flapped her wings with excitement. "Not today, though." - Olga pitched in, standing up. - "Today we need to settle down and do a little scouting trip around town. If that parasite was anything to go by - we got our work cut for us." "Umm... Sorry, Miss Von Everek?" - Asked Applejack awkwardly. - "You didn't answered 'bout the thing that was in Pinkie..." "It was a parasite called Bliss. He affected your friend, creating hallucinations and changing her behaviour, forcing her body to produce endorfin. It also changed her appearance to look more appealing to others. I will recommend that you get her to doctor, specifically to take some blood tests for any diseases and addictions related to drug usage, as well as to check her with gynecologist." - Advised Olga. "Why?" - Simply asked AJ, looking confused. "Drugs and sex could give you pleasure, which can feed that kind of parasites. If she did used drugs and/or had a carefree sex life - it could potentially ruin her social image." - Shortly explained Olga, taking her bag and throwing it at her shoulder. Twilight in the mean time was writing down everything that was said and Barb having a fangirl moment. Applejack looked disturbed, but nodded at the words of Olga. "Darn... Well, thank ya kindly for yer help, Olga. I'll take care o' that. If ya need sumthin' from a simple farm mare - be sure to swing by 'Sweet Apple Acres'." - Answered AJ, nodding to Olga with a tired smile. "'Sweet Apple Acres'?... Aren't you posted a request for guards to investigate the strange amount of bird nests around your farm, as well as night attacks on your livestock?" - Wondered the Beasthunter. "Ya... those feathery thangs pecking at mah apple trees and damaging th' other crops. And the beasts from nearby forest attacking mah pigs. How did ya know?" - Asked the farm mare. "It's our job to look for anythin suspicious. We will be there in an hour." "Oh.. thank you, Olga. I'll notify mah family then." - She stood up, but was stopped by groan from the now awake pink mare. "Uurgh. What... happened...?" - Pinkie croaked, sitting up and holding her forehead with a hand. Barb and Rainbow quickly came to her side, helping her to get some water in her. "I'll leave it to you all... Come, Gilda. We have a job to do." - Said Olga, exiting the library with young griffin and orange mare in tow, latter which headed in the direction of her farm. *** The walk to the farm was hold up by two stops. First one was at the mayor's office, where Olga and Gilda introduced themselves, took a key to their temporary home and told Mayor Mare that they would see to Applejack's request. Mayor Mare nodded and thanked both Beasthunters for their assistance and wished them luck in their work. Next stop was their new house. Simple one story house with two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and a common area. Both Gilda and Olga left their bags in their new rooms, taking only essentials that might be required for their work. They checked their equipment before leaving. Their swords, belts with various little bottles, vials with specialised venomous concoctions, little bags and pouches with powders for a different things. Olga was, and still is, strict to the recruits back in Griffinstone that were forgetting their equipment. Sure, to kill a timberwolf, a small group of scavens, or even a manticore you don't need much of a equipment. But if by any chance they encounter some kind of spirit or even a simple cockatrices in their strolls - they would be in big trouble without their items. First lessons after their physical training is to learn - how to counter each beast and monster and to always be prepared. Your sword must be sharp, your eyes and ears keen and your equipment always fully stocked and checked. After some time this would become a habit to the trainees - keep their weapons and armor in good condition, be on guard when they at work and check their belts so they would always have everything they need. When both Beasthunters finished their preparations - they left their house and headed to the farm. *** Arriving at the farm - Olga noted the impressive size of this place. Rows after rows of apple trees with a family house and two barns within her sight. Further down, behind the now unused plot of land could be seen the Evergreen Forest with a tall, twisted trees. From the house exited Applejack with an old, greenish mare in tow. They meet the arrived in front of the house. "Hello again, Applejack. We will start looking around the place of the beast's attack and if we find something - we'll get rid of it." - Said Olga, looking at the trail that leaded to the unused orchard. - "I'm already have some thoughts at what are we dealing with, so I will ask you and everyone in the house to stay inside. There is no need to risk your life and stay outside." "Hol' up there, youngun." - Said the old mare. - "First o' all, mah name is Grand Apple, but 'erypony call me 'Granny Smith'. This mare is mah grankid." "Pleasure. My name is Olga Von Everek, and next to me is my assistant - Gilda. Our job is to hunt down dangerous monsters and beasts." - Answered Olga, looking at Granny Smith. "Applejack told us 'bout ye' comin' taday. If ye' say that we need to be inside for some time - I've got nuthin' against it. Call us if ye' need sumthin'." - Said Granny, turning around and walking back to the house. "We'll be going. Please, be inside. When we will be done - I'll knock four times on the doorframe." - Said Olga, to the Applejack who nodded and headed inside the house, locking the door. "What do you think it is, mom?" - Gilda asked quietly. "We'll see. Head to the outskirts of the forest and look at the bird nests. Also check for pawprints and clawmarks." - Gilda nodded, walking to the edge of the farm. In the meantime - Olga comes to the barn, looking for clues. On the outside there is a thin ragged marks of claws with three lines. The bodies of dead pigs looks mangled, but not eaten. Like something was in for just killing. Same ragged marks of three claws, but the angle of strikes looked like the beast was using it's natural weapons not aiming at all. There is no prints of paws at the ground, but the grass itself looked disturbed, like something definitely was walking on it, but was not heavy enough to leave prints on the ground itself. If Gilda would say what Olga thought she would - they have their target and it's more obvious that other might think. Gilda came back in fifteen minutes, saying that the outskirts don't have any prints, but the ground covered in crow's feathers, the nests are theirs. "I thought so. Well, we have our mark." - Declared Olga, crossing her hands. "We do? I don't know as much as you, mom. Care to explain to me - what are we dealing with?" - Asked Gilda. "There is an old rhyme to that monster..." High above the rotten rows Cloth and branches Teeth and crows Trough the field Down the lane Voices never heard again. "...in other words - our monster is standing in the middle of an orchard." - Olga pointed with a nod at the scarecrow on the unused orchard, to which Gilda turned around to look at it briefly. - "Use the oil for weakening the connecting wild magic akin of timberwolfes and preferably something that will burn it. We need to reduce this fucker to a pile of ash..." - Olga snarled, gripping the handle of her sword and unsheathing it. With a smooth move she snatched the vial of said bright green oil and after uncorking it - poured the content on her blade, while Gilda mirrored her movement and grabbed a small urn of flammable oil in her left hand. Unknown to them - a pair of eyes watched them from above. *** After all the girls woke up and Rainbow helped Pinkie to the bathroom - Twilight started to do the only thing, when she didn't know something - research. She gathered all of the history books in her library, asking Barb to tell her the required timeframes. The books didn't had much in terms of the details from the other side, but the gist of it was that : Olga Von Everek, a very skilled swordmaster, offered her assistance as hired drill instructor to the Griffon Empire right before the war with Equestria. After the war was declared - she talked to the Griffin King and Princess Celestia, saying that to avoid unnecessary casualties - she will challenge Princess to a duel. If she came out victorious - Equestria surrenders. If she were to be defeated - she'll lose her head. Olga won in that duel and without better wording - handed Celestia her flank on a plate. Equestria lost as the agreement stated, but in return to just occupy the new land - Olga asked Celestia to lend the Griffin Empire skilled farmers and couple thousand heads of livestock. Celestia agreed to that and as such the name Olga Von Everek was escaping the sights of historical events. Her name was mentioned two hundred years later, when Griffonia was at war with united minotaur tribes. She was at that moment advisor of Griffin Queen and is responsible for creating the law that was applied to the death row convics, creating a 'suicide battalion' that charged the enemy soldiers without even a slight care for their lives. Thanks to Olga and her knowledge of battle tactics - the war with minotaurs was ended in four years. After that, for her incredible service, she was highly rewarded and called 'The Goddess of War' among the army members of Griffonia. After the reward ceremony - given a honorable discharge from the army. After her discharge - Olga Von Everek founded her own guild, that specialises in hunting for dangerous monsters and leaving community problems and conflicts to army and guards. Her guild, according to history books, was absorbed into military of the country. When Twilight finished retelling this to her now gathered friends - all of them looked both horrified and fearful. The question is - how did she lived so long? Was she some kind of deity? Or somebeing, akin in powers to Princess Celestia or Princess Luna? "Gilda never told me about this... I've always thought that she had a hard relationship with her family, but turns out her mom is the most badflank being I've ever met..." - Said Rainbow, grinning ear to ear. - "Maybe I should reconsider my career choices..." "What do you mean, darling?" - Asked Rarity, taking a sip of her hot tea. "Oh, right. You were out when she said about that. Olga and Gilda came to Equestria because Princess Celestia asked for them. She will train ponies to hunt monsters. All of my life I wanted to became Wonderbolt, because I thought that they were the coolest soldiers in Equestria. But looking at Gilda and her mom's accomplishments... I'm starting to doubt that." - Every pony looked at Rainbow surprised. "You think, that aireal military unit of Equestria worse than Griffonian Beasthunters Guild?" - Asked Barb, confused. Rainbow's eyes widened and she quickly tried to correct herself. - "N-no! I mean... I mean... Oh, buck it... I think they are cooler. Wonderbolts are aerial performers and a part of the military. But that's it! Last time Equestria was at war - it was with Griffonia almost five hundred years ago. They are part of the military, but they didn't have any activity in this zone. Beasthunters actually doing what they are saying - they are hunting monsters. Olga and Gilda probably doing it right now on the Applejack's farm!" "But didn't you were always training to become Wonderbolt? It was your dream, wasn't it?" - Quietly asked Fluttershy, hiding half of her face behind her mane. "Yes..." - Dash admitted, unhappy. - "But still. In terms of usefulness - Beasthunters are better than Wonderbolts. I wonder who would win - Captain Spitfire or Guildmaster Olga?..." - She asked noone in particular. "Olga would mop the floor with Spitfire, claws down. She has more live experience behind her back." - Said Barb with a smirk. "Make sense..." - Admitted Pinkie, sipping her tea slowly. "You know? I think I'm going to head to the farm and see - what Olga and Gilda could do. I bet they are fighting some kind of monster a's we speak." - At that - Rainbow quickly stood up and with a flap of her wings flew off trough the open window, sending a gust of air from her take off and tipping the cups at the table, which made Rarity grumble. *** Rainbow watched, staying behind the cloud, as Gilda and Olga unsheath their swords and after some manipulations - started to get closer to the scarecrow. She watched, as first strike was dealt by Olga, but she didn't cut off scarecrow's 'arm', leaving a deep scratch. The scarecrow body started to rapidly change with excited screams of the birds from nearby trees. Arms of scarecrow became wider closer to it's claws. It became alive, sporting big maw with a sharp looking, jagged teeth made out of timber shards. It had no eyes nor legs, only thin looking frame, covered in the old, tattered coat and a long, sharp looking claws. The monster hopped on it's stick towards Olga, followed by a vortex of crows above it. Gilda threw something at the scarecrow, spilling some black, oily fluid, after what Olga summoned a short wave of fire, which ignited the monster and making it scream in a disturbing, high pitch squeal. Olga advanced forward, ducking when the abomination tried to claw her and with a slick move cutting the right arm of the beast off. Another scream didn't came, as Gilda rushed forward and with a wide slash cut off monsters head, which made the birds flap, like they were hit and flew away in a different directions. Olga in the meantime sheathed her sword and took a butcher's hook from her belt, puncturing the head of scarecrow all the way trough and attaching the head with the hook at her belt. Gilda return her sword into the sheath at her back, watching as the headless body turned to ashes. Olga said something to her, which made griffin smile with a blush and gave a side look to Rainbow. *** "Come on, dear..." - Whispered Olga. - "Let's turn down our trophy and head to our new home. You can spend the day with your rainbow-colored friend tomorrow, while I'm gonna look around the woods..." - Gilda nodded to that, walking beside her mother to the farmhouse. Couple of minutes later and Olga knocked four times at the the doorframe, which in turn caused a turn of key inside the lock and opened door. Behind it stood very spooked Applejack, but seeing Beasthunters calmed her down. "O' thank Celestia, are both of ye' alright?" - She asked. - "We 'eard the loud scream from outside and thought you got hurt or sumthin..." "No. The only one hurt was this bastard." - She nodded to the head at her waist. Applejack almost puked at the sight of a dismembered head, but cowered her mouth, holding it down. - "Wha' is that thing?!" "Voicecatcher, a far relative of timberwolfes. It's a wandering monster, choosing forest paths and farms to kill it's prey. They often imitate someone's scream to attract it's victims. It was in form of a scarecrow on your orchard. It didn't need to eat, but absorbs bones when the victims body decay." - Explained Olga, looking down at the head. - "Given griffin farmers and travelers a lot of trouble. Now everygrif know to not follow the screams in the forest." Applejack just nodded to that, while Olga took the hooked head and pulled our the small linen sack, placing the head inside and tying the sack close, holding it in her arm. - "So... what's next? Are ye' gonna do sumthin with it?" - Asked the farm mare, nodding at the sack. "I'll show it to the Mayor Mare and she'll give us our reward. Such as life of Beasthunter." - Answered Olga. - "The remains of Voicecatcher we burned to ash, it'll do good for the soil. We should get going, our day was long and we need to rest." "Ya, I can believe that. Than ye' again, both of ye'." - Weakly smiled Applejack. - "I sumthin like that happens again - I'll make sure to call ye'." "Have a good evening, Applejack." - Olga nodded, both of Beasthunter's heading to their new home. Reward can be collected tomorrow. Author's Note Sorry for the delay, the inspiration not coming to me for this fic. As always, keep calm and stay cool. See you soon.
