Prologue | Pipp's Dilemma
Princess Pipp Petals, in all her regality and public appeal, lounged luxuriously across a premium silk sheet draped across the back of an imported hoof-made chaise lounge in her private offices at Mane Melody, 12 East Prancing Street, Maretime Bay. She held a lukewarm cup of mint and turmeric tea in one manicured forehoof while the other fidgeted with a white quill plucked from her own downy wing some days ago.
She wasn't much of a quill-and-ink pony in the age of Ponygram, Hooftaps, note apps and video messages—it was just that sometimes the tactile feel of one's own feather scrawling across a page was just the inspiration one needed whilst on the cusp of artist's block. And so it wasn't unusual to find her making short-form, barely-sensible notes when inspiration neglected to simply present itself on polite request.
On such occasions, a few pages of hastily-scrawled hoof-written notes were often enough to invigorate herself into something new. Inspiration for Pipp wasn't hard, per se . It sometimes took a shift in perspective to find.
Today, though, inspiration for her newest video simply would not show itself no matter how hard she tried, and any concept of creativity was wholly drained and depleted; no doubt a direct result of pulling two double shifts at the salon. Frustrated and near complete surrender, she dropped the quill on a page full of disjointed thoughts and bullet points and reached for her laptop instead. Surely she need only to take a short, well-deserved break and come back to her work thereafter. Maybe then she would find inspiration.
The small white and pink laptop with little white feathers on the cover lit up, the screen glowing coldly in the dark of the poorly-lit office--candles usually helped her think, and the usual buzz of the overhead fluorescent lights sometimes gave her a headache--and she went straight for her usual internet haunts.
She scrolled through Ponygram and found it offered nothing interesting in the short interval since she'd checked it last, which admittedly had not been that long. She'd received a few hooftaps from fans, several dozen comments (ugh, bots!), and DM requests respectfully ignored. Not even her usual fellow influencers had posted anything today. Where were the filly four when she needed them for once?
Feeling the fatigue of her creative drought start to fully set in, she started to scroll through other lesser-used socials and found them similarly dry and devoid of anything with the faintest hint of interest to her. Last, only, was Ponyfans.
Ponyfans was simply an ends to a means for Pipp. She didn't relish in it, nor her willing participation in what she could only describe as an entirely different circle of influencers than the usual sort she was involved with. Pipp was greeted by a big, bold "Adults Only" banner, immediately followed by a lascivious display of ponies in various stages of candidness.
Pipp had joined out of a contractual obligation some moons ago, and for a healthy pile of bits, too. It turned out that some of her more adoring fans would pay wing and feather for a snap of even the most innocently framed picture of her hooves, tail and legs. She hadn't minded the attention it gave her either, and truthfully she had carefully read each and every comment left to her, idly daydreaming about the kind of perverted praise some of them willingly bestowed upon her.
As she scrolled through the feed, blushing at some of the intimate shots of ponies she actually knew and wished she hadn't seen, she nearly guffawed at a sudden unscrupulous post that crawled to the top of the page. Pipp couldn't put her hoof on where she'd seen this one, but more shocking than the youthfulness of the subject was the sheer volume of engagement it had received. Pipp started to notice other posts, while sparingly few, hitting similar numbers and how their subjects were equally questionably aged. Then it hit her. She envisioned a long glass tube in her head filling up, bubbling and overflowing with inspiration. Her eyes lit up and she rushed to her phone, plucking it off the floor where it had fallen to the wayside and rolled under the chaise, quickly and with giddy hooves typing out a text.

Seashell arrived at Mane Melody no more than ten minutes after receiving Pipp's urgent message. Mane Melody was packed when she arrived, and Seashell had to push past a loud group of pegasi that were chatting about something or other in the latest fashion magazine from Zephyr Heights. She grumbled under her breath, each palpable second a moment less than she would get to spend adoring her idol. She pressed on, ducking behind one of the salon chairs and ignored a cursory glance from Jazz, who was busy curling a pony's mane.
Slipping past a small door, Seashell found herself in the comparatively quiet and far less lively back room. On one side, the entrance to the bathrooms, a broom closet, and a kitchen. The other had a single dark oak door halfway down with a gold-encrusted handle and a picture of Pipp's cutie mark on it. She picked that one, wedging it open and stepped inside.
Now she was in a comfortable and cozy sitting room decorated with tiny exotic Bridlewood plants and regal-looking wallpaper. A single window with the curtains drawn was set perpendicular to a small white fireplace that crackled and hissed as it emanated warmth and cast shadows across the antique furniture. Another door left ajar on one side of the room lead to a large office, and to Seashell's right was a small bar for making tea. Pipp herself was sprawled lazily across a chair sitting directly in front of the fire and otherwise preoccupied with her phone.
"H-hey, Pipp! I got here as soon as I could. I'm not too late, am I?"
Pipp looked up and smiled, flashing a pearly white and well-brushed smile, evident even in the firelight. "Hey, Seashell! Not at all, I'm glad you could make it!"
"Of course! Anything for you, Pipp!" Seashell started to make her way to another chair, but Pipp beckoned her over to the very chair she was sitting in, even though it was only made for a single pony. Seashell obliged, clambering up the side of the chaise, and was about to sit awkwardly on the edge when Pipp instead pulled her in close so they were wedged in against the arm of the chair together.
"How's that? Are you comfy?" Pipp mused, her eyelids drooping. Seashell assumed she was probably sleepy from the warm fire. It made her sleepy, too.
"Yeah, I guess so!" Her little heart fluttered but she dared not allude to just how excited she was to share that closeness with her.
Pipp let out a hum, reaching out to stroke a manicured and polished hoof through Seashell's well-cared-for mane, slipping an errant strand of hair behind her ear, casually smoothing out and styling it.
"So, what's your idea for a video? I bet it's gonna be a big one. The best, even!" Seashell's eyes lit up with excitement but she remained relaxed and at ease against Pipp's side, smelling faintly her pleasant perfume.
"I think it will make a lot of ponies surprised, that's for sure," Pipp grinned, "and it might even be a record-setter. That's why I needed you."
"Me?" Seashell cocked her head to one side in a fashion that was simultaneously cute and amusing.
"Yes, you, silly!" Pipp reached a hoof to gently prod the filly on the nose. "You see, it's for Ponyfans, and I want you to be in it. I think it'll be my biggest video yet!"
Seashell sat in stunned silence, wriggling her booped nose as the gears started to turn in her head. She knew what Ponyfans was, of course. Pipp was on it and Peach Fizz's brother had paid the exorbitant fees for access to her special beach photo set without their parents knowing, and through extortionary measures against her brother Peach had gotten hold of them to share with her friends. Seeing Pipp like that had made Seashell's young mind go aflutter and she'd never forgotten.
"Ponyfans?" Seashell repeated, blinking owlishly. "But that's..."

Pipp's looked over the filly in front of her and all at once Seashell realized her expression was neither boredom nor fatigue. “Pipp! Sorry I couldn’t make it here earlier! I was held up with crummy homework. Do you still need help with your video?” Peach Fizz trotted right into the cozy and dimly-lit sitting room.
Pipp was sitting in front of the fire, plonking away at the keyboard on her laptop when Peach trotted in. She caught her gaze, smiled, and cocked her head to one side.
“Oh hello, Peachy! Can I call you that? Have a seat on the chair over there. Y’know, I just saw your friend Seashell earlier…”
“You did?” Peach Fizz hated feeling like she was interrupting somepony doing something important. She hoped what Pipp needed help with didn’t have anything to do with business or taxes and stuff. She wasn’t very good at math.
“Yep! She was a great help!” Pipp seemed to purr as she reminisced over the adventures of earlier that day. Peach climbed up the very chair that Seashell had sat in just hours ago, her eyes never leaving Pipp.
