One thousand years ago, Princess Luna, Night Princess of Equestria, was overtaken by a demonic entity, known as Nightmare Moon, who led the deadliest conflict in recorded history, the Nightmare War. Only through the power of the Elements of Harmony was the Nightmare banished to the moon for a millennia, but now that millennia is over.

As the Nightmare defeats the modern Element Bearers, it is obvious that she is to be Queen of Equestria.
