Then in 1928 the Carolina rammed and sunk the ss Wellsburg during a stormy night. The final accident by the USS Carolina was in 1933 when she fired and sunk the us destroyer Strasberg. After hearing about her decommissioning the states of north and south Carolina asked the us federal government to donate the USS Carolina to the two states. After 30 years the vessel was in a terrible state. That's when a man named john Mallory started to collect donations to restore the old ship to its former glory. After about 2 years the group John Mallory started had managed to collect 197.5 million dollars. She still stands today until. In 2017 on the vessels 100th year old existence the united states decided to reactivate the USS Carolina for one last run.
