history of the CSS Carolina
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe USS Carolina was built is 1917 at the harperson ship building company and was the only Tillman class battleship to ever be built. The vessel was built to help stop the germen blockade set up around great Britain. Hoping to build a battleship that could take on more the one boat they built the vessel to take a hit from even the most powerful cannon the Germans had. She fought in the second battle of Jutland in 1917. The Carolina managed to sink 7 warships in this famous battle.
Built to go one the ocean the Carolina became the pride of the American navy which it would remain for the next 50 years.
In 1934 after the end to the first world war the USS Carolina was sent back to the harperson ship building company for a major refit. After being in the works for 3 years the Carolina emerged from the shipyard. The vessel continued to serve the American navy for another 8 years. In 1942 the Carolina received anti aircraft guns. Then in 1965 at 48 years old and after serving for the us navy's the USS Caroline was decommissioned by the us navy.
In 1924 during a us navy exercise the USS Carolina managed to accidently ram the battleship Wyoming. The damage done in the accident put both the mighty Carolina and the Wyoming out of commission and sent back the repair yards for fixing. Then in 1928 the Carolina rammed and sunk the ss Wellsburg during a stormy night. The final accident by the USS Carolina was in 1933 when she fired and sunk the us destroyer Strasberg. All in all the Carolina had many accidents over the years but as luck would have it no fatalities happened as a result of said accidents.
But wait there is some good news. After hearing about her decommissioning the states of north and south Carolina asked the us federal government to donate the USS Carolina to the two states. After a lot of back and forth the Us government donated the Carolina to the state of South Carolina. the vessel traveled under its own steam to Charleston south Carolina.
After 30 years the vessel was in a terrible state. That's when a man named john Mallory started to collect donations to restore the old ship to its former glory. After about 2 years the group John Mallory started had managed to collect 197.5 million dollars. With the rest being covered by the state of south Carolina
Taking 4 years and costing 224 million dollars the USS Carolina emerged from the ship yard liking better then ever. She still stands today until. In 2017 on the vessels 100th year old existence the united states decided to reactivate the USS Carolina for one last run. After being taken to a ship yard and getting rebuild back into full operational statice she left Norfolk Virginia on her very last voyage. Little did anyone know that would be the last time anyone would see the Carolina forever!
