We Can't Be Together

“Pinkie… I’m sorry. We just can’t anymore.” Twilight felt tears slip down her muzzle, “What we had was fun, some of the best moons of my life, but I’m a princess now… a real princess.”

Pinkie-Pie’s face fell, eyes watering. She quickly recovered, though, “...Well it doesn’t matter if you’re a princess!” She exclaimed, smiling and bounding over to Twilight, “We can make it work! Sure we don’t see each other as often… but that doesn’t mean we have to split!”

Pinkie held Twilight’s front leg in her arms, now much larger than her. Twilight had continued to grow and grow, eventually becoming the size of Celestia as she continued to care for the kingdom. She looked up at the princess, smiling.

But Twilight could see right through her. Through her smiling face and shining eyes, there was fear and desperation. Hope that she wouldn’t leave her.

For the first time, Twilight pushed Pinkie away, “You don’t understand. I don’t have time to be with you.” She stepped off her throne, back turned, “I hate that it has to be this way… but rather I stay with you, desperately trying to make time for you as I have…” Tears continued to fall, “And ruin what we have more. Pinkie, we’ve been too reckless.” She cried.

Pinkie-Pie watched, hooves close to herself. She was quiet, not saying a word.

Twilight turned to face the other, still not meeting her eyes, “I need to stay focused and take care of my kingdom. Now that I’m fully grown, I shouldn’t need the help of Celestia or Luna or anypony.” She wiped her face with her hoof, “But I do, because instead of studying and practicing my magic I’ve been with you.”

“...Oh,” Pinkie-Pie responded ears down. Tears started spilling out of her eyes as well. She chuckled unconvincingly, “I-I understand. You’re the princess! You need complete focus!” She smiled wobbly, “Y-yeah! It’s fine. It’s okay!” She started to tremble.

Twilight approached Pinkie-Pie, but Pinkie-Pie stepped back.

“Pinkie, I’m sorry. I am. But I can’t” Said Twilight, reaching out her hoof.

Pinkie-Pie dodged her hoof, “But what about me?!” She cried, breaking her false character, “I know that you can drop things but I can’t!”

Silence. Twilight let out a sob as Pinkie-Pie covered her muzzle at her outburst.

“...I don’t want to leave you!” Exclaimed Twilight, “I really don’t! But I have to. I would rather us be apart than we stay together and I neglect you.”

Pinkie-Pie sniffed, “Okay, Twilight. Okay. You win.” She said bitterly, “I’ll leave so you have all the time you need to sit on your throne.”

“Pinkie…” Twilight quietly cried.

“If-” Pinkie-Pie swallowed, “If we are apart, I’m no longer Pinkie to you. I can’t stand to hear you call me that. My name is Pinkie-Pie, Princess Twilight.”

Twilight stepped back as she watched Pinkie-Pie exit the throne room. She cried out, stomping her hoof and sending a magic bolt straight into her throne.

She watched as crystal exploded and flew around the room. She didn’t care.

Twilight left the throne room, going straight to her personal chambers. She didn’t care if something important happened or if somepony needed her. Her world was shattered, so their worlds could wait.

She lay in her bed, kicking all the fancy pillows off. She couldn’t stand them.

She buried her head in her hooves, letting out a sob and continuing to quietly cry.
