A friendship magic conundrum
Possibilities
Load Full StoryA blank page. Think of all the possibilities. It has the ability to be anything, not tied down by any expectations. Right now it has the potential to be everything and nothing at the same time.
Bound by this state, it's constantly a mystery, though it doesn't want to give any answers.
Answers. Suddenly the flash of green comes into view with a recongnizable shape of a rectangle as if it was just cutout. It was accompanied by familiar sounds of voices who brought back into a limiting reality. "Everyone looking to get to know Hildenburg college, our lecture will be starting in about 5 minutes".
A loud assuring voice announced, making the logo and the slogan come into full view. We shape great minds and mold successful futures. "Definitely not a humble brag all right." Sunset smiled to herself.
"Look just like the one on the School of magic's entrance". A suddent thought about Equestria shocked Sunset, but she quickly steadied herself.
"Let's see you in practice, Hildenburg." Whispered an ambered hair girl as she entered the hall.
"I'd like to start off by saying I'm happy to see so many new young minds here.
As I'm sure you are aware Hildenburg college offers the best education opportunities for those
who are always curious about the world around them. Not many schools can offer this no-limits education.
The courses you can pursue here are....". Sunset's mind trailed off as the she played with front brochure page.
This was important, she couldn't miss it. But who was it important to? Her friends were delighted
she signed up for this. Especially Twilight, who, of course, already turned in her application the moment
it was possible. Right on schedule. Like always. The rest were also building their futures. Sunset
wanted to be there - happy with them. Thats why she had to make this count.
A slide with pictures of a lab gauged Sunset's attention. Sunset was quite fond of laboratories in equestria. Though most of the equipment was magical live-tamed plants. Everyone was allowed only through a protection bubble to keep the lab from being destroyed under misguided spell reactions. Not Sunset though - caused no problems and was allowed to practice limitlessly. Execpt the time she flooded the lab with a piranhia pond, while trying to make them fetch her food. Celestia made it all go away. She always looked out for Sunset. It was simpler time back then - any time there was a problem journal with princess Celestia was all the once gifted unicorn needed to do. Her teacher was always there with answers.
Even though Twilight usually took a few days, worst-case weeks to respond, now months had passed. And nothing. Not a single drop of magical ink. I guess after being friends for so long you would expect more. The whole point of a magical journal is to have easy communication. Sunset desperately wanted to tell someone how much she missed magic over these few months. Before long she stopped herself in her tracks.
"Relax, she's preparing to rule equestria. Twilight never does anything without a plan, preparations she must be crazy busy. She'll get to you." Still unsure of her own words she tried to focus on the lecture.
"You are expected triple A's in your AP classes, though requirement may vary based on the course you've chosen..."
Piece of cake. The straight A papers have not waivered the whole semester. Chemistry was especially a breeze.
It seemed like the logical course to take. Different elements interacting with each other creating
unpredictable reactions. Closest thing to magic. As if hoping something to happen at that moment,
the girl lost in the auditorium of a hundred others reached for her phone. Her brow furrowing, she scrolled through panicky-text messages from twilight about a magic problem. Sent 20 minutes ago. Wtih no time to waste she rushed out of the auditorium ignoring the scowls of onlookers. Halfway through the door she caught last words from the lecturer "Submissions are closing next week!".
Preparation for the graduation ceremony was in full swing. And canterlot high was preparing the biggest send-off
for the graduates. This year was special after all. Those 6 magical girls who turned the schools world upside down
would be leaving. A theater play showing the various adventures showing the girls battles with the darkest forces.
Recounting the whole story was no easy feat though. Scene direction absurd to themselves, the bustling of ever-changing costumes fights for the best character parts, trying to create "magical" special effects provided a nice distraction from the 12th grade's difficulties.
"...but it is nothing compared to the magic of friendship-"
"Yeah, yeah we get it. Light her up ladies!"
Each of the "HUMANE 6" defeating Wallflower by covering the memory stone in multicolored paint brought in some chuckles. Except for the two girls resembling the characters on stage everyone was amazed.
"No. No. And No. This is horrible." exclaimed Rainbow Dash girl in a raspy voice.
"This scene needs to be epic. Emotional. Heroic. Show-stopping. Awesome." caught up in her own fantasies as if she
was acting out the play herself Rainbow Dash received none of the enthusiam back.
"Weren't there colored projectors last time around?" asked a confused AppleJack.
"We had to give those away for the arts installation. We tried to tell you, but you're not around much these days."
said the girl whose green hair was more fit to play Wallflowers part.
"I wish I could help, but I can't exactly leave Apple acres customer service to BigMac. Granny's been all up on
us to take over responsibilities".
"Girls. Girls. Let's instead take this moment to appreciate the magnifincence of the prop departament.
Would you look at those outfits!". Sporting an elegant posture, each movement elavated by grace Rarity strolled to
the stage to get a better look.
"Shame I didn't have time to contribute." Rush of dissapointment was interrupted by the bright flash on her neckline. Once. Twice. Then repeatedly as if it set off a silent alarm. Rainbow Dash and Apple Jack's necklines seemed to have the same reaction. Pendants that were once their saviours had turned against them. Horrified they watched as Rarity exploded with tons of diamond shields flying into the students.
"Get down, everyone, now!" shouted the green haired girl as she evaded a blow from the diamond.
"Rarity, STOP THIS! It's gonna wreck everything". shouted AppleJack as her figure lunged of the ground.
"AAAAAAH!!! What in tarnation?!" A bright yellow aura was plunging her into the stage as she scuffled to regain control
back. Ropes holding the curtains gaining a mind of their own rose to tie her up.
"Apple Jack grab on!" Rainbow pointed to the bolted side lights. It was hard to make out what she was saying when
the sudden steeping winds as if they were running from a storm drowned out her words.
-"What other-wordly creature is it this time?" screamed Rarity. "Why now after all this time?!". Breaking down on the
ground. She desparately tried to cover her hands as more diamonds broke through.
"We gotta get this under control!" screamed Apple Jack while the ropes dragged her.
Her strength was holding her to the light but the ropes were too strong as they dragged to tie her up with Rarity.
-"Everyone head for the door NOW!" shouted the green haired director girl.
Students bustled running for their lives trying to not be swept off their feet. The bustling wind trapped them inside,
however, sealing the door shut. As if it wasn't bad enough an enormous surge of tables, chairs and papers collected
by the gust were inching closer.
-"The windows!" a shout escaped a few students as they guided everyone to their last hope of survival.
One by one they flooded to big glass panels. More than a dozen stayed behind - they couldn't get through the huge pile
of hoard the wind had gathered including a dozen of Rarity's diamond shields. The students gathered by the door screamed and wept for their lives.
Suddenly a loud bang could be heard on the other side of the door. At first it was faint knocking, but then it grew louder and more eager with each bang. The door wouldn't budge, so after a short pause a purple glow started to push. Struggling and struggling against a huge force the doors finally swung open. Students quickly flooded out of the gym like a swarm of bees. Pinkie Pie jumped inside while Twilight caught her breath.
"Seriously?! You guys threw a magical gemstone power-party and I wasn't invited?" the angry expression from Pinkie's face fell as she saw AppleJack and Rarity flung around lasso-style.
"What the hell is going on?!" shouted Twilight as she tried to place the flying tables back into their place.
"It's NOT a party. Our magic is out of control!". The wind carried Rainbow Dash crashing into Rarity and Applejack sending all
three of them into the ground.
"Try taking the necklaces off!" Twilight pulled apart the ropes holding Applejack and Rarity together. "Maybe we need to be further away to stop the magic".
As the necklaces dropped on the ground nothing changed. The soaring wind provided no hope as it kept on flunging more and more stuff at the girls. They ran to the same door for any chance of escape. But it was once again sealed shut. Even harder this time none of twilight's attempts to open seemed to work. Panic washed over the group. But Pinkie Pie got an idea. She grabbed one of chair's flying at her and sent them to the door exploding it in the process. Then it stopped - the woosh of wind was gone with the sounds, the stuff settled down on the ground most of it severely damaged. Unable to believe the chaos was over the mane 6 looked over each other.
"We were heading over to check out the play when we heard screaming - are you guys okay?" said Twilight.
"We'll... be fine". Rainbow Dash fearfully stepped into the room. "But look at the gym!".
"I don't understand what happened. One moment we were talking about the play. And suddenly all hell broke loose." Applejack bent down pick up the broken doors but hesitated.
"We weren't even using magic. An yet we ruined everything." Rarity looked over the ruined stage decorations and equipment.
It was the greatest mystery after all. Their powers have always helped them. Provided they used them apporpriately. There wasn't any villian to fight. Not one they could know about at least. Still distraught from what just happened Twilight quickly shot Sunset a bunch of SOS texts.
-"I know just the person to help us figure this out" Twilight exclaimed with confidence.
Suddenly Fluttershy rushed in, her face drowned in concern and worry.
"I heard what happened. I think my powers are out of control too." scrunching her shoulders, she looked down. "Those poor little creatures".
The girls all pulled eachother in one big hug. It provided a nice sense of comfort, after all they hadn't gotten together like this in a long time. Preparing for a new chapter of lives was demanding - there was less and less time friendships, while some polished their GPA's, wrote essays, did extracurriculars.
But this world was testing them in new ways. Right now nothing was certain, but this moment was enough.
