I sighed.
The San Palomino Desert's boundary outpost was the worst place to be stationed for somepony in the NCR. There was sand everywhere; coarse, rough, and constantly going places where you'd least expect. Even with the recently-activated "Gardens of Equestria" spell, it felt as if the desert was the same as it looked before: bleak, boring, and boundless. Not to mention, of course, the constant trips to "Death Gulch" - which certainly lived up to its name.
It'd onlybeen a week since my promotion to Sergeant, but already, I felt as if my head was going to explode. My brows furrowed in frustration while the two bumbling griffons ahead of me struggled with what was, to me, the simplest task in the entire Equestrian wasteland. You remove the bolts, clean the bearings, and replace the wheel. What was so hard about that? It felt like every minute I spent in this awful sand-trap, I was becoming more and more unhinged.
Fed up with chaperoning the village idiots, I blew a disheveled strand of brown mane out of my face and turned around to trot into one of the further wagons' rear hold. Evidently, "President" Grimfeathers didn't care as much about the desert crew to give us skywagons, leaving us with the more primitive tech.
Looking down at my hooves while I stepped into the wagon's shade, I was reminded that it'd been at least two weeks since I'd last been able to take a bath. The dirtier I saw my coat grow, the unhappier I became. I felt gross! In my prime, every single one of these burly, native stallions around would've been ogling me up and down, wanting a piece of my flank.
