8. Flipping The Script! An Offensive Defense!

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

The week following the Canterlot Wonderbolts’ first loss of the season was one of frustration and restlessness for Y/N. Concussion protocol had kept him off the field and out of practice for the whole week, a mandatory precaution after the brutal hit he’d taken during the game against Timber Spruce’s team. Not to mention the bruise on his ribs would ache at times making it hard for him to make certain movements. For someone as dedicated as Y/N, the downtime felt unbearable. While his teammates drilled and strategized, he was sidelined, forced to focus on recovery. But he didn't just sit and do nothing, he watched his teammates play and talked to the Coach going over plays. He watched film of the upcoming team they were to face, and whenever he noticed something he let one of the Coaches know.

Rarity, ever the concerned cousin, had been particularly vocal about ensuring he didn’t rush back too soon. “Darling, I know how much football means to you, but your health is more important,” she said during one of their conversations at her house. “What good are you to the team if you push yourself and make things worse?”

Y/N nodded but didn’t respond, his mind already made up. Sitting out was not an option in his eyes. He put a hand on his ribs as he grimaced in pain. He knew that his health mattered and he knew that he had to be careful to not get more injured to keep him out for even longer, but his stubbornness got the better of him. He had to play, the team was counting on him and he didn't want to let them down. He had let them down by getting injured last week, and although it wasn't his fault, he still partially blamed himself for them losing last week.

Iron Will and Y/N had talked about ways to keep him safe from injury. They both understood how important it was for Y/N to not get hit. The one thing Canterlot lacked was a backup Quarterback. Without Y/N the team would be nowhere near the same amount of intensity and flare like they had and last week showed that. The offensive line would only be able to do so much but there would be times when defenders would break free and get to him. The best thing would be for Y/N to get the baller out quicker, do pocket presence drills once he was back in shape, and maybe even start to run from time to time.

Another thing that Iron Will had started training Y/N for before he went down with an injury. Being a mobile Quarterback would open up the window for many opportunities. Y/N so far had been a pocket Quarterback, as he stayed in the pocket and threw the ball to his teammates or gave the ball to the running back. But if he could learn how to be a dual-threat and start using his legs it would make defenses stay on their feet when Canterlot was on offense.

The atmosphere at the stadium was electric as the Wonderbolts prepared for their Week 5 matchup. Their opponent, while not as strong as Timber’s team, was still formidable. Y/N knew this game was crucial for their season. At 3-1, the team was hungry to prove that the previous week’s loss was a fluke and that they were still contenders. If they were to drop another game, especially lose two in a row, people might start to think they were pretenders.

Y/N stepped onto the field, helmet in hand, ignoring the faint bruise that lingered from his earlier injury. His head too, hurt a bit from the loud cheering from the crowd, but Y/N fought through it. The murmurs of concern from his teammates didn’t go unnoticed, but he brushed them off with a confident smile.

“I’m fine,” he assured them. “Let’s get this win.”

Coach Iron Will wasn’t as easily convinced. “Y/N, are you sure about this?” the coach asked, his tone uncharacteristically soft. “You’ve been out all week. No practice, no drills. This isn’t just about you—it’s about the team.”

Y/N met his coach’s gaze, determination shining in his eyes. “Coach, I can do this. I need to do this.”

Iron Will sighed, finally nodding. “All right. But the second I see you struggling, I’m pulling you. No arguments.”

From the very first snap, it was clear that Y/N wasn’t at 100%. His timing was off, his passes lacked their usual precision, and his movements were sluggish. The opposing defense capitalized on his rustiness, sacking him twice and intercepting a poorly timed throw.

The Wonderbolts’ offense struggled to gain traction, and frustration began to seep into the team. The crowd, usually a sea of encouragement, grew quieter with each misstep. Y/N also started to lose it, he knew he was better than this, but his injury was getting to him.

Coach Iron Will paced the sideline, his jaw clenched as he watched the game unfold. After another failed drive, he finally made the call. “Bulk! Flash!” he barked, summoning the two players. “You’re going in on defense. Bulk, you’re at linebacker. Flash, cornerback. Let’s see what you two can do.”

Both players exchanged surprised looks but quickly nodded.

“Got it, Coach!” Bulk said, his usual enthusiasm shining through.

Flash smirked, adjusting his gloves. “Time to shake things up.”

Y/N watched in surprise as his friends went on the field. "Why are Flash and Bulk going on defense? They're a part of the offense."

"I've made all of my players do practice drills on both offense and defense. It keeps opposing offenses and defenses on their feet. Just watch and see it for yourself, Y/N." Y/N nodded and looked on the field as the defense took to the field.

Bulk and Flash took the field, bringing an unexpected energy to the Wonderbolts’ defense. Bulk’s size and strength made him a natural fit for linebacker, and his aggressive playstyle disrupted the opposing offense’s rhythm. Flash, with his speed and agility, quickly proved himself as a capable cornerback, sticking to receivers like glue and breaking up passes.

Midway through the second quarter, Bulk read the quarterback’s eyes perfectly, stepping into the passing lane and intercepting the ball. He barreled down the field, shrugging off would-be tacklers before finally being brought down near the red zone. The stadium erupted in cheers, the momentum shifting in Canterlot’s favor.

Not long after, Flash made a similar play, intercepting a deep pass and returning it for a touchdown. The sideline exploded with excitement, players mobbing Flash as he crossed the goal line. At halftime, the Wonderbolts led 14-0, thanks entirely to their defense.

In the locker room, Coach Iron Will addressed the team with his usual intensity. "Listen up! The offense isn’t clicking tonight, and that’s fine. Football’s a team sport, and right now, our defense is carrying us. Bulk, Flash—fantastic work out there. Keep it up.”

He turned to Y/N, his expression softening slightly. “Y/N, I know you want to do more, but this isn’t about one player. Trust your teammates. Let them carry the load tonight.” Y/N nodded, his disappointment evident but tempered by the realization that the team could still win without him being the focal point.

The defense continued to dominate, with Bulk making another interception and returning it for a touchdown. Flash followed up with a spectacular pass deflection that led to a teammate recovering the ball. The special teams unit added a safety when the opposing punter fumbled the snap, further padding the Wonderbolts’ lead.

On the sideline, Y/N watched with growing admiration as his teammates stepped up in ways he hadn’t anticipated. Bulk was a force of nature, delivering crushing hits and rallying the defense with his energy. Flash, usually the flashy playmaker on offense, showcased his versatility and athleticism on the defensive side of the ball.

By the end of the fourth quarter, the scoreboard read 41-0, a decisive victory for the Wonderbolts.

In the locker room, the mood was jubilant. Players cheered and high-fived, celebrating their dominant performance. Despite the win, Y/N couldn’t shake his frustration over his own performance.

He sat on the bench, staring at the ground until Bulk and Flash approached him.

“Hey, man,” Bulk said, clapping Y/N on the shoulder. “Don’t beat yourself up. A win’s a win, and we couldn’t have done it without you out there leading us.”

Flash nodded. “Yeah, you set the tone, even if you weren’t at your best. And don’t forget—this is what teams do. We pick each other up.”

Y/N looked up at his teammates, a small smile forming on his face. “Thanks, guys. You were amazing out there. I’m proud to be on this team.”

As Y/N sat at home, icing his ribs and replaying the game in his mind, Rarity entered the room with a cup of tea.

“You were splendid tonight, Y/N,” she said, sitting beside him.

He raised an eyebrow. “Splendid? Rarity, I barely did anything.”

“Nonsense,” she replied, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. “You showed resilience and trust in your teammates. That’s what makes you a great leader.”

Y/N sighed, leaning back against the couch. “I guess I learned something tonight. It’s not just about one unit or one player—it’s about the team. If one part struggles, the others step up. That’s how we win.”

Rarity smiled warmly. “Exactly, darling. And with that mindset, I have no doubt you and your team will continue to achieve great things.”

Y/N nodded, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. The Wonderbolts were 4-1, already surpassing last season’s record, and the future looked brighter than ever.
