The Secret

It was a beautiful, sunny day in Ponyville. The birds were chirping, the children were playing, the breeze was rolling. It was the perfect Saturday afternoon. Some areas could even be described as serene. Twilight Sparkle walked over to a special area in the field next to Ponyville. She found a nice flat area, and began unpacking the items in her knapsack. She laid out her large tablecloth on the ground and secured the edges with stones so it wouldn't blow away. Spike stalked over onto the cloth, completely out of breath, and plopped onto the ground, dropping his large backpack.

"Spike! Come on, what if the food gets damaged!?" Twilight complained, rushing over to pick up the backpack, apparently more worried about the food than Spikes spine.

"Saaawwwrryyyyyyy!" Spike said sarcastically. His stood up and put his hands on his back and bent backward, surprised at the multitude of cracks that rippled out from in between his bones. Twilight began unpacking the food from Spikes backpack, as well as all the dishes and silverware from her own.

"Remind me again why we couldn't just teleport, Twi." Twilight straightened looking straight ahead, and she cocked an eyebrow.

"Good question, Spike," she replied. Spike let out a dissatisfied groan and fell back to the ground. "Well, all the food looks good still."

"I still don't see what the big deal is. I mean, it was only a matter of time before Fluttershy found a boyfriend. Why is everyone making such a big deal about it?" Spike asked.

"BECAUSE! No one ever actually expected Fluttershy to meet someone special, she's too shy! Besides, I want to meet him and find out what he's like. I am still slightly miffed that she kept him a secret for so long, but I can hardly blame her, what with her shyness. Anyway, it's important we make sure that she found someone great!"

"But why is it any of our business, anyway? She should be able to decide for herself who is right for her!"

"You have a point. At this point it doesn't matter, as they're on their way." Twilight was absolutely right. They were on their way over. As a matter of fact, they could see Spike and Twilight. But Twilight had her back turned so she couldn't tell they were approaching.

"Hi Twilight!" Fluttershy called. Twilight turned around, excited to finally see who Fluttershy had found. She looked and saw Fluttershy walking toward her, her pink mane covering the right side of her face like it always does, and her bright yellow body reflecting the sun's light in a beautiful and tasteful way. On her right was a large stallion, about the size of Big Macintosh, with large muscles and a nice trimmed mane. His coat was a nice bright green. It wasn't neon, but it reflected the light in much the same way that Fluttershy's did. His mane was a light shade of blue, perhaps turquoise. Watching them walk together through a field with the bright sunlight surrounding them in a beautiful glow was absolutely astounding. Twilights jaw dropped at the sight; it couldn't be more perfect, as he was a prime example of a strong, handsome stallion and Fluttershy was a perfect example of a beautiful feminine mare. Together they looked perfect. Twilight was now aware of the fact that they had reached the edge of the tablecloth and that Fluttershy was talking to her.

"-ight? Are you ok? Twilight?" Only then did Twilight snap out of it.

"OH! Um, sorry about that, I was just, erm, admiring that part of the field."

"Ok then. This is Muscle Mass."

"Pleasure to meet you Mr. Mass," Twilight said, extending a hoof.

"Oh please, Mr. Mass is my father. Call me Muscle," he said, taking her hoof and shaking it. His shake was tremendously strong. After they stopped shaking hooves, they ate. When they were done, Muscle offered to carry all the picnic items back.

"Oh that's fine, Muscle, you don't have to do that."

"Oh no, it's no trouble at all, dear!"

"Well, if you insist." She and Spike threw their respective bags of containers, cloths, and silverware onto Muscles back, as well as their bag of trash.

"That's my Muscle, always the gentlecolt!" Their eyes met, and both of them smiled. Muscle started to crouch, and Fluttershy drew herself up and tilted her head to meet Muscles face, and they kissed. Fluttershy's mane was no longer covering her face, revealing - Twilight gasped - a huge, hoof-shaped bruise on her right cheek. Twilight ran at them, placing herself between them, and forcing them apart. She all but tackled Fluttershy backwards almost five feet, turning to face Muscle. Her brow was furrowed in a murderous way, her nostrils flaring.

"Back off, Muscle, or else!" Twilight's horn began to glow, and she withdrew all the forks and knives from her bag, pointing them at Muscle threateningly. "If you take even one step closer, I will put more holes in your body than a sponge!"

"Twilight, what are you doing?" said a slightly irked Fluttershy. Twilight turned her head to the right, to address Fluttershy, who was still behind her, while simultaneously keeping her eyes on Muscle.

"I am protecting you. I saw the mark on your cheek. I won't let him hurt you again." And then something happend which Twilight would never have predicted. Muscle started crying.

"No! It's not like that! I would never hurt Fluttershy! I love her! It was an accident, I swear to Celestia it was! Oh no, now you think I'm a monster! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAHAAAHAAA!" He was sobbing now. Twilight looked stunned. She lowered the makeshift weapons onto the ground slowly.

"Fluttershy, is this true?" asked Twilight. Fluttershy walked over to Muscle, and kissed him on the cheek.

"It's OK, honey, she didn't know." Fluttershy turned to Twilight, her brow furrowing, her voice stern. "Twilight, it was in fact an accident. He was bringing me breakfast in bed and he dropped a glass on my cheek. He didn't mean it and now you've gone and hurt his feelings." She turned back to Muscle and gave him a hug, which he promptly returned. He had stopped crying by this point, and looked so gentle and kind when he hugged Fluttershy. Twilight felt so guilty about doing what she did. What was I thinking!? How could someone so gentle and kind do something so horrible? What is wrong with you, Twilight....

"I am sorry, Muscle. I am really, truly sorry," Twilight said, head bowed.

"It's fine, I understand how you would make that assumption. I would like it if we could just put this whole situation behind us."

"I would like that." She smiled at him, and Muscle, and he smiled back.

"Thank you for dinner, Twilight," said Fluttershy. "We have to go and feed the animals now. Bye!"

"Bye! And it was very nice to meet you, Muscle."

"Likewise, Twilight." Muscle and Fluttershy turned and started back to Ponyville.

TWELVE HOURS LATER

*knock knock knock knock* Fluttershy awoke to a banging sound. She got up and went to the door. She was halfway there went another series of knocks occurred, more urgently this time. Fluttershy made it to the door, and opened it.

"Who is i - Muscle?" It -was- Muscle. He did not look necessarily in a good mood. He was tired, and his expression gave a slight angry look to him. "W-what are you doing here this late?"

"May I come in?"

"What?"

"MAY I COME IN!?" he repeated, raising his voice. "Come now Fluttershy, we both know your hearing is perfectly fine, how could you not hear me, hmmm?!"

"Y-yes, you can come in." This isn't right, why is he acting like this? Muscle walked in, forcing Fluttershy to the side as he did so. He stopped dead about seven paces inside the door. Fluttershy closed the door, turning to Muscle.

"So, what do you need, Muscle?" Muscle did not turn, he did not move. He stood, still as a statue, staring at the wall.

"I need to know one thing, Fluttershy: why?" Fluttershy was completely flummoxed by Muscles question.

"Why what?" she asked.

"YOU KNOW DARN WELL WHAT!" he shouted. This startled Fluttershy. Muscle had only yelled at her once before. She shrank down in fear, closing her eyes. She tried holding back the tears, but they came unrelentingly. He raised her hoof to her right cheek and felt the bruise that happened shortly after Muscles last outburst.

"I am sorry, Muscle, I thought I did a good job." Muscle wheeled around and ran up to her. This caused her to recoil in fear and anticipation.

"Good job? Good job?! Fluttershy, you're stupid little story made me look like an uncoordinated klutz! On top of that, you didn't say your line that you were supposed to say so then I had to fake the tears. Now Twilight thinks I am a little wuss AND a monster! Is that what you want? YOU WANT TO MAKE ME LOOK BAD?!" Fluttershy could only respond with a quiet whimper. "No matter. If you want to make me look bad, I will make you look bad. Look at me Fluttershy..... LOOK AT ME!" she shouted, practically shaking the whole cottage. Fluttershy just sat there in her little ball of fear, shaking. Her non-compliance only angered Muscle, and he gave a loud growl as he brought his hoof up and down on Fluttershy's back. She uncurled slightly as all the air escaped her lungs. She started to audibly sob once she caught her breath.

"When I tell you to do something, DO IT. Now, I'll tell you ONCE. MORE: LOOK AT ME!" he yelled, raising a hoof. Fluttershy looked up at him, meeting his gaze, trembling, and watched helplessly as Muscle brought his hoof down into her left cheek, sending her a few feet to her right, completely uncoiling. She brought her hooves up to her new wound and began crying even harder, wanting her nightmare to be over. "Shut up." Muscle said, walking over to her. She tried to get quieter, but she couldn't. "I said," Muscle started, raising his forelegs. "STOP IT!" He shouted, bringing both hooves down on the side of Fluttershy's chest. He could hear her ribs break as all the air was once again squeezed from her lungs. She fell on her stomach, wrapping her forelegs around her in self defense. This only pushed the broken ribs into her internal organs. She could feel them getting pierced.

Muscle saw this as an act of defiance, so he grabbed her mane in his teeth, and pulled with all of his might. He got her off of the ground and sent her flying through the door. It was ancient frame and the old wood gave way easily. Fluttershy landed in a broken heap, covered in splinters. Little trails of blood began creeping out of the splinters and where her back hit the door. It was raining now, and the cold drops felt like bliss on Fluttershy's broken body. Muscle quickly came to her side. He looked around and he found a nice, large root sticking up out of the ground. He grabber her mane yet again and dragged her over to it. He stopped dragging when her head was right next to the root.

"Bite it," he said. Fluttershy didn't want to know what Muscle would do if she didn't comply. She struggled to left her head up to the root. She pulled herself a few inches closer to it, even though it caused pain to streak up through her body, and she placed her teeth on the root. It was wood, but it felt like it was stone. She clenched her eyes shut and started crying harder than she ever had in her life. Muscle raised his right hoof in preparation. "Say 'good night,'" he said, right before he brought his hoof down on Fluttershy's head, root-stomping her into unconsciousness.

It hurt. Everywhere hurt. Fluttershy had never been in so much pain in her life. Her mouth and jaw ached, her head throbbed, her chest burned, her back stung. It was awful. She immediately began to cry again. She finally managed to open her eyes and look around. She tasted blood. She didn't move her head, but she could look around. She saw the nurses scrambling to stop her bleeding....to no avail. Fluttershy saw her friends looking on in despair. She could feel where her jaw had torn from her skull. It was not pleasant. She could feel her blood rapidly draining. She was cold.

So cold.
