Why did you really break up with timber?” sunset asked, her voice low and shaky. Refusing to look at her because she knew the answer, and it scared her.
She didn’t know why.
Twilight turned towards the girl sitting beside her. It was a humid day, slightly overcast too. Yet, the sun still peaked out of the clouds, just enough to illuminate the ground beneath them.
She took a deep breath and looked down, “You know why.”
She did.
Sunset shook her head, “I need to hear you say it.”
Twilight stayed silent for a minute. She’d never told anyone that she’d had feelings for them. It never seemed like something she had planned to do, and she planned a lot of things. Not that any of that mattered anymore, she was different now.
“Because of you.” She said quickly. Leaning back on her arms to hold her up, she turned to face Sunset who sat beside her, “You know it’s ‘cause I love you.”
Sunset didn’t move and didn’t look at her, she simply nodded.
“Do you not feel the same?”
“NO!” Sunset flinched at the volume of her voice, “Sorry, sorry.. I mean..” She finally looked at Twilight. She sat cross cross on the concrete as the small patch of sunlight shined directly down on her. Sunset inhaled sharply, thinking about how she just wanted drown in her light forever.
“I do. So much so..so much that I don’t understand it myself sometimes.” She breathed out.
Twilight couldn’t help but smile. She just couldn’t help it. It was the kind of smile that makes you feel like the sun, like you can’t get any higher.
Sunset scooted closer to Twilight and sighed, “You know I love you…but”
“but?”
“Not even ‘but’.. it’s just that I’ve loved you for so long but I never thought we’d be here right now, like this,” She let out a strained laugh, “The universe has never liked me much. I think that’s fair, I haven’t done it much good,”
She didn’t miss the face Twilight made, and how she rejected that thought so quick. She thought about how terrible it was, that so many people in the world would never get to meet Twilight Sparkle. The girl that would be on her side no matter what. She felt selfishly happy that it was just her.
“I never in a million years, or worlds, imagined I’d ever be here. I’ve thought about going back to Equestria, I’ve thought about leaving you all alone. And I know, I know better now, but still..”
She felt Twilight’s hand on hers, bringing her gaze up to meet her velvet eyes, “I get it. I do. You know I need to tell you that even if for whatever reason you think the universe doesn’t like you, we all do..I do.”
Sunset Shimmer was an idiot, or at least she was smiling like one. No one had ever loved her in the way Twilight Sparkle had, she felt her heart want to burst. She wanted to let go of everything from before and start over right then and now, but she knew it wouldn’t be that easy.
“I love you so much, Twilight. In ways even I don’t fully understand.” She breathed, face even closer to hers now.
They shifted so that Twilight could lean her head on Sunset’s shoulder as they stared out to the slowly fading sunlight.
“It’s not time yet, and that’s okay.” Twilight said, “I’m here to stay, Sunset, one way or another. We have all the time in the world.”
Sunset sighed contently and kissed the top of Twilight’s head, “In any world.”
Author's Note
I wrote this maybe a year ago and posted it on ao3 cuz I couldn't work my fimfiction :') Finally here yay!!
In the nights that she spent, begging on the floor to be good. Falling asleep on the tile floor because she would not deserve her bed. One that she had given herself the luxury of when she believed she deserved ownership of two worlds.
Now she didn’t deserve a smile. One day she’d get up off that floor, tuck herself in, and get a good nights sleep.
But that was a luxury reserved for the good
people. Not her.
“Twilight? What are you doing?” Sunset rubbed the sleep out of her eyes, trying to adjust her vision to the bright kitchen light.
The seven of them had been spending the night at Rarity’s place. They’d planned to stay up all night, but inevitably fallen asleep after getting comfortable in their sleeping bags.
That’s what Sunset thought until she saw Twilight sitting on the tile floor of Rarity’s kitchen.
“Sorry, Sunset. I didn’t mean to wake you up.” She looked away, cheeks a dark purple from embarrassment.
Sunset tilted her head in confusion, but couldn’t judge. She’s done stranger things. So she sat down on the kitchen floor next to her friend.
“Why are you down here, Twilight?”
“I’m just…not used to it, I guess.” She replied, sounding defeated. She was clearly too tired to keep her walls up. The bags under her eyes, now evident after taking her makeup off, showed how little sleep she had been getting.
Her answer, while vague, was clear as a blue sky to Sunset. She wasn’t used to sleeping somewhere comfortable. It’s funny how much of a luxury sleep seems to be when you don’t think you deserve anything.
She wasn’t used to having friends around, she’d never had that support from outside her family.
“I get it, it took me a while too.” Sunset sighed, looking down.
Twilight looked surprised, finally looking up at her.
“You have friends, Twilight. They care about you a lot.” She looked up, surprising Twilight with her eye contact, “I care about you a lot. Because you’re good. Not because I know the you that’s a princess. But because I know that you, Twilight Sparkle, are a good person.“
Twilight stared at her, eyes wide open. Sunset was smiling at her, hoping she could see the bright sun she was.
“I hope you know you’re good too. You’re a good person, Sunset. You give what you never had.” She smiled and leaned her head on her shoulder. Practically passing out from exhaustion. She was comfortable there. Not because it was a cold tile floor, but because it was Sunset’s shoulder.
Sunset didn’t fall asleep. As used to the floor as she was. Twilight’s words didn’t leave her mind, someone thought she was good.
She realized she had gotten off of the floor. She’d never accepted that after everything, yet someone she’d screamed at a month ago had.
Maybe she could get out of that crater outside her school now. Maybe she could get up off the floor…
…In the morning, with Twilight.
