Chapter 2- Overthinking

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

24 hours have passed since Twilight Sparkle gave birth to her daughter. The world rejoiced at the announcement of the newborn foal.

It was near sunset when Twilight looked out of the window of her room. She was laying in bed with her new daughter sleeping in her arms and her husband lying beside her. She was deep in thought. “Hey Solar, could you hold Dawn for awhile? I want to go for a walk.” Solar sighed at her request.

“Your meant to be resting, you gave birth only yesterday,” he said in a soothing tone, Twilight giving him a smile back.

“I'm sure I can stretch my legs for twenty minutes, I've barely left my bed at all. I don't think I've actually gotten up except to go to the bathroom.”

She carefully handed him the sleeping foal and slowly got out of bed. She was still sore, but she had something on her mind that she needed advice on, and who would be better than her all-knowing former mentor. Ever since Twilight moved into Canterlot Castle the walk to Celestia’s quarters was short and brisk compared to how it used to be when she had to walk from her tower. She would've teleported to avoid the pain, but the doctor recommended not using magic for at least forty-eight hours. She reached Celestia’s quarters quickly. She'd been told before that if she ever wanted to talk she could just walk in.

Celestia was reading on a cushion beside the warm fire. “Twilight, you're meant to be resting, how are you feeling?” Celestia asked in a soft motherly tone.

Twilight sighed. “I feel sore and tired, nothing that you wouldn't expect, I just felt the need to come and see you since I haven't left my room in a while. You know how I hate being stuck in one place."

Celestia smiled. “I hope you feel better soon, how is she?”

“Shes good, that's actually what I wanted to talk to you about.”

Celestia looked up from her book surprised, but she knew Twilight often got all caught up in her thoughts when she didn't speak to someone about them. “Why don't you take a seat Twilight.”

Twilight laughed. “It hurts to sit, or lay on my front, may I possibly lay on your daybed?”

Celestia nodded. “Of course you can, whatever you're comfortable with.”

Twilight slowly walked towards Celestia’s daybed as Celestia also got up and engulfed her pillow in her amber magic to set it near the daybed. She put her book down and gave Twilight her full attention. “What is it you would like to talk about regarding your daughter?”

Twilight exhaled. “Just ever since I found out I would have her I've felt different. I've not felt like myself. I'm scared I won't be a good mother to her.”

Celestia looked at her former pupil. She knew that this was how she felt, she could tell from the moment Twilight had told them she was expecting. “Twilight, I know you better than anypony, I know for a fact that you will be an amazing mother, just look at how good you were with Spike.”

“I guess that is partly true, when he was a baby my parents basically looked after him because I was a filly myself and for the past few years he's looked after himself pretty much, he's running the castle by himself after all.”

Celestia thought for a second, she needed to take another approach. “Twilight, I know you have doubts, but you're not alone. You have Solar, your friends and family, and you also have me. I know you are and will continue to be a great mother.”

Twilight smiled. “Thanks Celestia, I needed the reassurance.”

Celestia smiled back at her student. “I'm glad I could help, just know i’m always here if you need to talk.”

Twilight stood up and began walking to the door before wincing and coming to a stop. “On second thought, can I stay for awhile, I'm still quite sore.”

Celestia nodded. “Of course you can Twilight, I enjoy your company.”

Twilight slowly walked to the daybed again lying down, her eyes beginning to droop as she quickly fell asleep. Celestia watched for a moment as memories of young Twilight falling asleep in that very daybed brought a smile to her face. She got up and put a blanket over the sleeping mare. She knew that Twilight really needed rest. She'd heard the small filly down the hall was quite active last night, which of course was expected as most newborn fillies were similar.

Twilight woke up to the dimly lit room, the only sources of light the fireplace and a lamp close by. Near the lamp lay Princess Celestia who was reading a book. She looked up as she noticed that Twilight had awakened.

“Somepony must of been tired,” Celestia smiled. “You were asleep for just over an hour.” Twilight's eyes widened.

“They must need me, after all Dawn was quite unsettled last night,” Twilight yawned. “I think I should go back to my room. I'll just put up with the pain, I mean, every mare goes through it after they have a foal.”

Celestia smiled. “Alright, make sure you rest though, I shall see you soon Twilight.”
