She forced herself to walk as she rounded the corner. Why would a thief stop and pick up a coin when he could be increasing the distance between himself and a police officer? Wasn’t it obvious? He’d seen her, and he knew if she’d seen him, she would chase after him as soon as she thought herself unobserved. He knew she’d get to the alleyway faster if she was giving chase, and now he’d gotten a good look at her. She could already imagine the backup officers coming to help, doing a half-hearted search of the area that would find nothing and the apologies as they let him go. She knew what she’d seen, and if nothing else, she’d get a closer look at him, take his measure up close. He’d go down to the station, there would be a mugshot, paw prints, and even if he got released this time, there would be a next time. “Police. She’d seen which way he turned, and he was making no attempt to hide himself as he raced through the crowd and then button- hooked down another alleyway, earning himself a few irate shouts from the locals. A blind alleyway; she knew it was there, she knew that cats could climb and if he had a few good claw-holds, he might make it to a fire escape, and from there could get up to a roof. A good short-term escape plan; she couldn’t follow him up there. But units could quickly surround the block, limiting his range, and then it was only a matter of time before he was brought to justice. There were dumpsters and boxes and crates and shadowed nooks and crannies that could all be hiding spots, he might be planning to temporarily hide, wait for her to rush past, and then duck back out of the alley, leaving her to search for nothing as he lost himself in the crowd. Unless she actually saw him in the alleyway, her best bet was guard the entrance and wait for backup to arrive. She rounded the corner and immediately took in all the obstacles, hiding places—a shimming, sea-green circle pulsing at the end of the alleyway silhouette him as he ran into it full-tilt. However, the portal was closing; he was there and she was here; there was no time to think, only time to act. She dove through, and one flash of interdimensional travel later, she was in a brave new world. Her mind struggled to fill in the details on the periphery, while her focus remained locked in on her target. He’d stopped and turned, no doubt checking to see if she was still following him. He didn’t have an eyepatch, but other than that, his face was almost exactly how she imagined it would look. Arrogant in the way many cats were. He looked genuinely surprised that she’d followed and she pressed the advantage, charging for him. In its blind focus and image overload, her brain was still getting up to speed. Moving objects were resolved. Non-moving ones didn’t present a threat and therefore went unremarked. Thus it was that in the heat of the chase she ran, full-tilt, into a stallion. She had a credit card and currency which would be useless except as art. She had the clothes on her back and her standard police-issue equipment which could potentially be traded. Her intention had been to save that for desperation, and based on how many forms she’d have to fill out for a lost item versus its street value. And all of that was to be based on pure necessity. A hotel room would be nice, a continental breakfast—if they had those—would be nice, but she could live without those luxuries. The hotel lobby had been an obvious choice for a place where she could spend the night in relative comfort for no cost, but if that didn’t pan out, there were surely all-night diners or, barring that, reasonably safe alleyways or train stations. “We take Terran dollars.” Judy narrowed her eyes. “Do you now.” He shrugged. “The economics are simple, there’s a fair bit of traffic to your world and of course any number of tourists need currency.” “That’s rather convenient.” “Being the hotel nearest the portal, it makes economic sense. Your change will, of course, be in bits. But I can assure you that we offer a fair exchange rate. If you don’t believe me, just ask around.” “I believe you.” She didn’t entirely, but wasn’t going to waste a whole bunch of her time checking with every merchant on this street. “Why do you even have a portal to Zootopia?” “Ponyville has a portal to a land of weird furless bipedal creatures, why shouldn’t we have one of our own?” That wasn’t much of an answer, but it was honest. And while Judy was a cop, sworn to uphold the laws of Zootopia, her duties didn’t include immigration; that was another department outside her pay grade. Nevertheless, she was going to do some research and make some phone calls when she got back. “How much for one night, then?” “You sure you don’t want two? It’s cheaper to buy two, and the portal won’t re-open for a couple of days, you know.” “Fine, two.” HotelIn terms of modernness or amenities, her hotel room wasn’t all that great. Then again, it was bigger than her apartment—sized for the larger creatures who lived in this world. She could run laps on her bed if she wanted to. The downside was that all the fixtures were too high to be comfortably used. The shower was mediocre, the water tepid, and the soap was lavender-scented, which almost covered up the faint mildew smell pervading the hotel room. Judy wrapped the bath towel around herself and regarded the little desk—she could hop up into the chair, but she instead just leaned up against the bed, got out her notebook and began writing a detailed account of everything that had happened to her thus far—the theft, the pursuit, the portal. Ultimately, she was going to be collecting days of overtime pay, so it had better be a compelling narrative. She looked at her pile of clothes and thought about the fact that all she had was her police uniform—would wearing it be considered impersonating a police officer? She, of course, was a police officer, but her jurisdiction only extended to the greater Zootopia metropolitan area, not whatever world this was.
