Princess Ember reread the letter. She had read it a dozen times today. And a dozen more times when she first received it. It was as cryptic as it was enticing. To think she had grabbed the attention of fashion icon Hoity Toity himself! Part of her still couldn’t quite believe it.
Even as far as the Dragon Lands, Hoity Toity’s work was well known. He was a trendsetter, a fashion critic, a haute couture expert known for his impeccable taste. He made a name for himself through his avant-garde and innovative fashion designs that were both elegant and practical. His fashion shows were the talk of the town, and his designs were coveted by fashion enthusiasts and industry professionals alike. He even used this fame to fund a number of fashion magazines that showcased only the finest hand picked trends that were sweeping through the fashion world.
Ember didn’t read many magazines - it was a hard commodity to find in the Dragon Lands - but whenever she perused a fashion magazine or glanced at some ad about what the pony social elite were wearing these days it always had Hoity Toity’s name involved one way or another. He seemed to be the pony to meet. And after receiving a letter from HIM asking help from HER, it was tough to turn down.
After her long journey from the Dragon Lands to the Equestrian capital of Canterlot, she had plenty of time to examine the invitation from the envelope's elegant script to the gold trimmed paper inside. She was expecting it to be a joke or a trick, but the more she read the letter, the more she realized it was authentic. And from Equestria’s own Hoity Toity no less. And the more she thought about it, the more she found the idea of modeling fun! Of course, being the tough and authoritative Dragon Lord who ruled with an iron claw meant that she had to maintain a certain image, but deep down she felt a mounting excitement over the thought that bubbled itself closer and closer to the surface as she neared the white towers of Canterlot.
The instructions included in the letter had led the dragon princess to Canterlot’s warehouse district, a section of the city where many zeppelins and airships stored their cargo. It was primarily made up of large, industrial-style buildings constructed for the purpose of storing the many crates of goods and materials that filtered in and out of the city on a daily basis. The buildings were primarily made of brick and stone, with some metal structures and roofs. Cold, utilitarian architecture compared to the white and gold spired buildings that made up the city’s skyline. Ember’s nose filled with the smell of dust and oil as she trekked through the winding paths that mazed between the warehouses. She might have very well gotten lost on her own, but thanks to the surprisingly thorough directions, she was able to reach her destination with minimal backtracking.
She finally arrived at the designated warehouse, one that practically blended in with the rest of the other warehouses save for a faded, weathered sign next to the door that read "Hoity Toity's Fashion House" in plain, business-like script. As Ember stepped through the doorway, she found herself in a dimly lit hallway, with doors leading off to various rooms. The air was thick with the scent of fabric and perfume, and she could hear the sound of sewing machines and chatter coming from one of the rooms.
She followed the sound to a large room where several ponies were busy at work, cutting and sewing fabrics, arranging mannequins, and fussing over details. In the center of the room stood Hoity Toity himself - or who Ember assumed was Hoity Toity himself, dressed in an impeccably tailored suit, his black sunglasses glinting in the light.
Princess Ember had a habit of getting ponies mixed up. Their colorful furs and equally colorful names didn’t help an outsider at all when they attempted to learn about an individual pony. Different furs, different manes, different cutie marks, there was no wonder how she often got them confused. Regardless of this she could recognize the leader of the group, and this earth pony stallion with his bluish gray fur and his light sapphire mane slicked back in a posh hairstyle showed that he was the leader of the group. And so, whether it was Hoity Toity or not, she approached him anyway.
"Ah, Princess Ember, so glad you could make it," Hoity Toity said, turning to greet her with a warm smile. "Please please, right this way! We have much to discuss."
Hoity Toity led Princess Ember to his private office, which was decorated with chic furnishings and shelves of fashion books and magazines. He motioned for her to take a seat in one of the plush chairs in front of his desk, and he took a seat across from her.
"Thank you for coming, Princess," he began, "I have something very special in mind for you. You see for years I’ve been eager to break into the dragon demographic and have been unable to do it for quite some time.” He leaned comfortably in his seat, ”if you would excuse some musing, I’ve always been fascinated by a dragon’s form and would be absolutely honored if you modeled for me and my more...niche audiences.”
Ember raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the idea. "I'm listening," she said.
“It would be better if I showed you!” Hoity Toity exclaimed, hopping out of his chair and trotting over to the bookshelf. From its many collections of thick spined fashion textbooks to the much thinner magazines, he extracted a stack and plopped it on the desk in front of her.
On the front page of the first magazine on top was a slender unicorn seductively posing for the camera. She stood in front of a bright and colorful background that was tastefully blurred to draw more attention to what the unicorn was wearing. Princess Ember browsed more of the magazines as Hoity Toity went on. There were often themes to them ranging from “Schools Back In Session” to “From Runway to Nursery”. After an appropriate amount of pause to make it seem she was really REALLY thinking it all over, Ember reluctantly nodded her head. “Fine then...” she admitted, trying her best not to sound disappointed, “I accept your offer.”
The stallion beamed at this and hopped out of his chair. “Simply grand!” he grinned before trotting back to the door, “then allow me to show you our studio! We’ll get started right away!”
The studio in question was a large room that consisted of two halves. On one side was a simple, unadorned space, designed to create a neutral background that would not distract from the subject of the shoot. The walls and floors were painted a neutral color, a pale gray that would not cast any color onto the photos. The other half had a variety of lighting equipment set up as well as tripods, camera stands, flashes, and cameras of all shapes and sizes. Everything was carefully arranged and organized, ready to be used at a moment's notice.
A small group of ponies could be seen crawling around the set, feverishly prepping everything for the shoot. As Ember entered the room - and more importantly as Hoity Toity entered the room - the studio crew climbed down from their ladders and out from behind their camera stands to gather in a loose group in front of the set.

He introduced her to each member including the two ponies carrying cameras, the one operating a control panel of knobs and switches, and the pony in charge of clothing and makeup. He even gave her their names, but considering how...bad Ember was with pony names, she forgot them almost immediately afterwards. Still, each pony gave Ember a respectful nod or a quick wave as they were introduced.
After pleasantries were exchanged, Hoity Toity took his place by his director’s chair and began to take charge. “Alright, places, everyone! We have a brand new model to showcase for Bottoms so let us make haste!” He then turned to Ember, “Princess Ember, if you could be so kind as to stand in the middle over there,” he gestured towards the white part of the studio, “we’ll get started right away!”
Princess Ember took her first cautious steps onto the white set. A half dozen cameras gleamed as they were pointed in her direction. After some time doing this, Hoity Toity signaled for a break and Ember was allowed out of the bright shine of the lights. The crew slowly broke away from the equipment and scurried over to a table where various snacks and drinks waited. There were even some tasty looking gems for Ember to chew on which she found...rather accommodating for a fashion magazine that hadn’t done dragons yet.
As the film crew chattered and snacked, Hoity was reviewing the list of images the photographer ponies had gathered throughout the session. "These are...nice," he finally said, his face scrunched up in puzzlement as he scratched his chin in thought. “They’re...missing something...”
