Chapter 1: Chance?
“Please don't try it, Scootaloo,” Sweetie Belle implored me. She was always taller than me, an was the stronger one then in our group. Tears were starting to form in her eyes. “You just got your cast removed today!”
"I didn't make it last time," I retorted, my gaze fixed on the imposing 6-story-tall Mega Master ramp - the only one I had ridden that ended up breaking my leg. Yet amid my fear, a determination stirred within me. "I have conquered all these other ramps, Sweetie Belle, this is my final challenge." I declared.
My heart stops as I hear Apple Bloom's words, "Ya broke your leg Scootaloo." I can feel the fear begin to rise up inside of me, an impenetrable dread that serves to remind me of how insurmountable this ramp really is. Fear grips my throat and as sense of hopelessness engulfs my body.
I knew Apple Bloom was right, the upcoming start of junior high school meant that if I wanted to find the time for this challenge, I had to do it now. Mustering my courage, I looked at my friends and back at the ramp. “This is something I have to do,” I said firmly. “I need to know that I can do it. That no one else can touch me on this ramp.”
Sweetie Belle sighed and stepped aside, knowing she could never break through my thick head when it comes to these things. “If you feel that strongly about it… then we won’t stop you. Just be safe... please?”
My heart pounded in my chest as I trudged up the seemingly endless ramp, scooter in hand. Taking a deep breath, I pushed my fear aside and leapt onto the scooter. Adrenaline pumped through me as I darted down the ramp, pushing myself deeper and deeper into the thrills of performing tricks - back flips, spins, grinds - until with one last push on the broken wheel, I was suddenly sent flying.
Time seemed to stand still as thoughts rushed through my mind like rapid-fire bullets; this would be the moment that my friends would never forget - and not for good reason. With a crash and a loud
"DAMMIT!", I landed with a thud and only sprained my ankle. But something soft broke my fall - a voice emanating from beneath me answered with a pained but strangely soothing
"Ow ow ow".
As my gaze met his, my racing heart skipped a beat. Had I just landed on a complete stranger? He looked up at me with worried eyes.
For a moment, I felt suspended in time. The silence stretched between us as I tried to piece together what had just happened. Then, abruptly, his deep baritone voice cut through the stillness. "Are you okay?" He asked me with concern in his voice.
His words snapped me out of my trance and I realized that this mysterious stranger had caught my fall and likely saved me from serious injury. Our eyes connected and I was taken aback by the intensity of his gaze - deep blue eyes that seemed to search right into my soul. His expression suddenly softened as he got up and brushed himself off, reching his hand to mine as to see if I needed help getting off the ground.
I held his hand and began to ask, "What's-" but my words trailed off as I admired him.
He repeated his prior question.
"Are you alright?" His words shook me from my reverie.
As I attempted to respond, "Yes, but I think my ankle is sprained," a thunderous chorus of voices came from behind me, "SCOOTALOO!" My friends came sprinting over in a wild disarray.
Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle scanned me with terrified eyes before Sweetie Belle declared sternly, "We warned you Scootaloo." I forced myself to stand despite the agony rising up from my foot like a flood. I could not escape the pain - it was written across my face.
The concerned eyes of my friends shifted from me to Blaze. Apple Bloom stepped up and extended her hand. "Thank you for saving my friend here, Blaze. We really appreciate it." she said with a smile, glancing at his outstretched hand before shaking it.
Blaze smiled warmly in response, his bright blue eyes still fixed on mine. When he spoke, his voice was soothing and somehow reassuring.
"No problem," He replied simply. "It's the least I can do - and I'm glad you're not too badly hurt."
I looked away embarrassed by the attention - but when I glanced back up at Blaze, something in his expression made me pause. It was comforting and familiar in a way that I couldn't quite explain.
He seemed to sense my confusion and broke the silence with a chuckle. "My mother's a doctor at the hospital near here," He said gesturing in the direction we'd come from. "So I know a thing or two about sprains," He said, "Do you need help getting home?" He asked.
I nodded in response, feeling a blush form on my face. He stepped forward and offered his arms, lifting me into an embarrassingly undignified position. I expected him to put me down, but he kept walking, carrying me like a child needing comfort. As we walked together, I felt strangely at ease.
My friends followed us all the way back to my house, chatting and laughing along the way. Blaze was kind and gentle as he set me down on my porch. He looked into my eyes with sincere concern, asking if there was anything else he could do to help. Apple Bloom chimed in offhandely "Oh! We can stay with her for a bit if you'd like."
He hesitated responding uncertainly. "If that's alright with Scootaloo."
I thanked him for his offer of helping.
"I will be fine with my friends."
Surprisingly, he didn't leave immediately. Instead he stood there awkwardly for a few moments like he wanted to say something.
"Goodbye." Is all we heard as he walked off my porch and he headed to his house.
"He's hot..." I said without realizing it.
My friends stared at me.
"You just met him!" Sweetie Belle said still upset at me from going on that ramp.
"I know, I just can't help it," I replied, feeling a little embarrassed at my outburst.
"Well, he was definitely cute," Apple Bloom chimed in with a grin. "Maybe he'll come around again."
I blushed even harder at the thought. It wasn't like me to be so forward about guys that quickly - especially ones I barely knew - but there was something different about Blaze that had caught my attention.
As we settled into the evening together, chatting and watching movies as per our usual routine on Friday nights, Blaze lingered in my thoughts. Something seemed off about him; something mysterious and intriguing that made me want to know more.
Days had passed and I couldn't get Blaze out of my head. It was like a spell that he had cast over me without even trying. So when I stumbled upon him again in the park, sitting on a bench with his eyes fixed on something far away, I decided to take the leap and approach him.
"Hi," I said softly as he turned around at the sound of my voice.
He smiled faintly before turning back to watch whatever it was that held his gaze captive.
"What brings you here?" He asked finally after what seemed like an eternity passed between us.
"I just... wanted to see you again." My cheeks grew hot at how corny it sounded but there was no retracting those words now.
He raised an eyebrow slightly before nodding for me to sit down beside him. We sat in silence for a moment longer until he spoke up once more: "Do you believe in love at first sight?"
I shrugged unsure if this whole thing between us counted as love.
"I thought, love at first happens at first sight in story's and fairytales." I replied.
He chuckled softly, his eye's glinting almost mischievously. "Well, we are in our own fairytale right now," he said with a slightly imposing but calming smile. "when you crashed into me at the skate park, I felt my heart flutter with emotions." He claimed.
I blushed deeply, feeling my heart skip a beat at his words. I had never been one for romance novels or fairytales, but in that moment with him, everything felt magical and enchanting.
"Really?" I asked softly, looking up into those deep blue eyes of his.
"Yes," He said before him asking a question that made my heart sink, "Would you like to go out on a date?"
I have never been asked out on a date. I was not even into all that lovey dovey stuff, I stared at Blaze. If it was with him, I would try.
"Sure..." Is all that came out of my mouth.
He smiled and gave me his number, "Aurora!" He yelled at a young girl on the slide, "Come on it's time to go home!"
A little girl no older than 5 ran towards us, she stared at me then at him.
"Okay big brother." She smiled grabbing hold of his hand warmly.
They walked off, and I stood there holding his number to my chest, before calling up my friends and telling them everything that had just happened.
I had walked home, my foot still hurt but not as bad, as I opened my door.
"Scootaloo," A voice came around the corner. "Dinner is ready, go wash your hand's and I'll make you a plate."
"Yes, mom." I said, a visible smile and blush was still visible on my face, she noticed and raised an eyebrow.
I walked towards the bathroom and washed up, feeling proud and happy today, as I finished up I heard a knock on the bathroom's door way.
"Love struck are we?" My mom asked.
I couldn't muster the words to form anything clear enough. So I just nodded.
"You can tell me everything when we sit down to eat." She smiled warmly.
We walked towards the dining area of the house and I took my seat. "how'd you know I was love struck?" I asked.
"You kidding me right? I am the famous Rainbow Dash, Motorcross queen, and savior of Canterlot High 3 years in a row, and adopted mother of you," She said snarkily her voice cracking a bit. "I had many guys ask me out, and one that made me smitten too."
"Fair enough." Is all I could say as a plate was sat in front of me. A burger sat on it with frys on the side.
I told her everything as we began to eat. Before long it was time for bed.
They left and I held his number to my chest, excitedly ringing up my friends with the news.
I returned home, not feeling the pain in my foot as much.
“Scootaloo,” A voice called from around the corner. “Dinner is ready; why don’t you go wash your hands and I’ll get you a plate?”
“Yes, mother,” I answered meekly, still wearing a smile on my face that she had noticed and acknowledged with an eyebrow raise.
I went to the bathroom and cleaned up, feeling elated. As I finished, I heard a knock on the door.
“In love are we?” My mom asked with a hint of sarcasm.
I couldn’t answer her verbally but simply nodded instead.
My mom chuckled and ruffled my hair. “Well, you’ve got that glow about you,” she said with a smile.
I blushed and looked down at the ground, not wanting to reveal too much just yet. But as I made my way to the dining table, I couldn’t help but feel like I was on top of the world.
When we sat down for dinner, my mind kept drifting back to our conversation earlier in the day. His voice echoed in my head like a sweet melody that wouldn’t fade away.
As I daydreamed at the table, mom broke the silence and my thoughts.
“Scootaloo. Do you want fry’s or nuggets with your burger tonight?” I pointed to the fry’s.
Mom’s eyes narrowed and she leaned in close.
“You’re probably wondering about the “Glow” comment,” She sighed,
“Remember all that weird stuff at Canterlot Jr high, well it started back then, I can see people’s Aura’s.”
“They had to separate the elementary track from the rest of the building because of all those incidents.” I chuckled, almost bursting tear.
“Hm, I’m curious as to what the girls are up to now. Twilight is a professor at the tech university and Sunset is an explorer by day, rockstar by night. Fluttershy is a professional animal trainer and Apple Jack... We haven’t been in contact for a while.” She went on for a while.
“What about Pinkie Pie,” I hummed, “I know Rarity is a full on fashionista now, she has her own store and everything,” I went on “Or that’s what Sweetie Belle said.”
I actually had a few outfits made by Rarity, a everyday dress and my current outfit.
“Pinkie Pie huh, now that you mention it. I heard she started her own party consultancy.” She said tapping her chin.
After a few minuets she grabbed a plate and sat one in front of me and then one in front of her as she sat down.
“So, who’s the kid?” She asked, her eyes glowing with curiosity like two burning embers.
I stared at her, in total confusion before gulping down my food.
“His name is Blaze, I know he has a sister named Aurora,” I said, slowly savoring each word as if it were a slice of divine meat. “He is only two years older than me, and he saved my life at the skate park a few days ago.”
Her expression darkened as if a storm cloud had rolled in. “Don’t tell me you tried taking on that Ramp again. Last time, I had to take you to the hospital—you looked like a jigsaw puzzle with pieces of your skin poking out!”
I winced at the memory. “No, mom,” I said, shaking my head. “I was just skating around and lost my balance. He saw me fall and came to help me.” I lied feeling ashamed that was the fifteenth time I attempted that ramp.
Mom relaxed a bit, nodding slowly. “Okay, okay. Well, just be careful out there. You know how I worry about you.”
“I will, mom,” I promised with a smile.
We finished our dinner in comfortable silence, and as I helped clean up the dishes, my thoughts went back to Blaze. I wondered what he was doing at that moment, if he was thinking about me like I was thinking about him.
As soon as I finished with dishes, I raced to my room, I pulled out his number then rushed to grab my phone and shoot Blaze a text message.
“Hey! Just wanted to say thanks again for saving me at the skate park... Also where did you want to go to for our date?”
I hit send, feeling my stomach fill with butterflies as soon as the message left my phone.
Seconds turned into minuets before my phone vibrated with a response.
“How about the aquarium? I heard they have a new exhibit on jellyfish.” His message said.
“I’d love to.” I hit send, and I sat my phone down waiting for the next response.
My phone buzzed a few seconds later.
“This Friday?” his message read, I responded with a blazing hot speed.
“Sure.” Followed by a smiling emoticon.
I laid my phone down on the night stand, and getting ready for bed.
Night soon loomed, a new day sure to start better than the last.
I hopped into bed turning off my lamp and closed my eyes. The world around fades as I fall into the land of dreams.
