Living in the cold, arctic mountains is very hard, especially for Coal's family, and living in a village where blankets & anything warm is getting rarer, which means they're getting more expensive, and that is not good for poor families, including Coal's family.

Fourteen-year-old Coal and his mother, Strand, go out to the market to hopefully find some cheap blankets to buy, but when an angry stall owner takes away their bits, they have to resort to searching for ones that are free. This leaves Coal alone to find some. Unfortunately, all that Coal just wants to do is give up. He just wants to be home, cuddling with his family in front of the fireplace.

Desperate for warmth, and hoping his family won't freeze to death, he meets a mysterious unicorn filly on his way home, and she would return some sort of warmth & blankets for something Coal will not like. But he will do anything to survive in this hell called winter.
