A flash in the air was nothing but calm as a certain someone raced around the sky. Soon, the rainbow dashed down to earth and towards a large castle. The message that was necessary to be delivered was left with the guards of a large castle. The message was passed from pony to pony as it headed for its intended destination. By that point, it had been written down on a piece of paper. A swirl of magic wrapped itself around the paper as it was unfurled.
“So, I saw this cool rock headed towards us from space. Probably won’t hit us. Might
be cool to watch, from Rainbow Dash,” the rather bemused voice spoke as she
read the letter.
“Well, dear sister, that is very much like Rainbow Dash isn’t it?” The darker-colored
Alicorn asked her sister.
“Yes Luna, we best head up to the observatory,” the elder Alicorn with the
multicolored mane responded, before she and her younger sister prepared to
depart for the uppermost regions of the castle.
The male earth pony gave a nod as he examined the sprawled out letter for himself.
Afterwards, he watched the pair of Alicorns take off. It was not a moment later
when the sisters touched down in the observatory as dusk had settled down upon
the castle and Canterlot below. Luna began prepping her star charts as Celestia
began slowly sliding the great doors open. “Luna, I must say, this was a good
idea,” Celestia smiled and sat back to watch.
“I am surprised that Rainbow Dash had this much foresight,” Luna explained as she
worked on the calibration. “Of course, she is not even here to see it,” she
added with a sigh.
“You know Rainbow Dash well enough,” Celestia shook her head with a smile. “She
always has something to do, so I am sure she sees that and this as equally
important.”
Luna gave Celestia a look, but then she smiled and nodded. It was then that another
male Earth Pony guard came in. “Princess Celestia, I have something for your
attention,” he said calmly.
“What would that be?” She asked with a hint of annoyance, but patience.
“Miss Moondancer thinks she has found some blacksmiths that may help us with some of
the planned experiments,” He explained to the best of his knowledge.
“Well Luna,” the elder Alicorn sister began before Luna was quick to respond.
“I can handle this on my own, do not worry Celestia,” Luna said and gave her
sister a reassuring smile.
Celestia simply returned a nod before he walked away with the guard. Once they were both
out of sight, Luna got back to her telescope’s setup. As Luna began to do so,
she thought about all the time she had spent here before. This time, she
assumed she would not be the guide. “It’s only a slightly special event,” she
reminded herself.
She looked away from the telescope for a moment. She swiftly shut some curtains at
the back of the room. She lit a candle inside a glass bowl and began to examine
some of the charts she thought she might need. The blue of the sky was becoming
increasingly purplish. “Let’s see,” Luna said to herself. “The four key
seasonal constellations. Leo for Spring. Draco for summer. Pegasus for Autumn.
Orion for winter,” she read them aloud to confirm them before she returned her
gaze to her stack of charts. “A second constellation for each season. Libra for
spring. Sagittarius for summer. Perseus for Autumn. Canis Major for Winter.
Those seem like they should work as backups,” she reasoned as she looked over
her list of choices.
She brought the charts with her and laid them beside the telescope in four stacks of two, each pair of charts were corelated with the season they were tied to. “Alright, range looks good. Now I can get set with examining this meteoroid,” she said to herself and began to gaze into the telescope.
Meanwhile, the meteoroid was slashing across the sky. Luna was easily able to follow it at its great speed. That was a surprise to her in the slightest. “Looks somewhat sizeable, but that should not be of any concern,” she said aloud.
She still spoke despite the fact no one was around to hear her, but sometimes it was nice to hear the sound of her own voice. Luna then noticed that the meteoroid was speeding up slightly. That was slightly concerning but probably nothing to be worried about. The meteoroid was speeding up due to the fact that it was being sucked into the gravitational range of the planet. As Luna watched intently, the meteoroid approached close enough for her to consider it a meteor.
The meteor did not begin to burn up all that much, and everything seemed to be moving along normally. Luna suspected it would soon leave the atmosphere for space once again. However, that was not what Luna witnessed. “Oh my goodness,” the Alicorn soon explained in shock.
The meteor appeared to split in two, one half about three times the size of the other. While the two pieces were still close together, each of them split apart again. The two initial pieces were now each one large piece and a bunch of other pieces that were much, much smaller than the initial pieces.
Luna attempted to follow the largest piece, but she soon realized she would have to abort that mission. One of the tiny pieces began to grow larger and larger until it covered the entirety of her telescope’s viewfinder. Luna realized that it may slam into the castle. She knew that she had to act quickly. So, she began using her magic to slow this now meteorite down. The sonic boom still occurred well above her and the castle. But, for all everyone else knew that could just be Rainbow Dash again. Luna managed to stop the meteorite inches from the floor of the observatory, and she let out a loud, “Phew.”
After she secured the meteorite in a stable position and let it begin to cool, Luna returned to her telescope. She realized that she was looking at the dead center of the Great Square, and she felt the slightly cool wind blow.
