As the ponies assorted before Somnambula filtered out of the room, she took the opportunity to suck in some deeper breaths. The class before her had come so far in opening their minds into the Ways of Peace she'd laid out. So to see it fall apart as Somnambula shot her third accusing look to her refrigerator—her open, listing, dessert-less refrigerator—was as absurd as it was aggravating. The only other pony who spent time in her house was Ironhoof, and he’d been called to Ponyville the day before. Oh, Somnambula’s mood had taken a swift shellacking again. “Magnus!” she asked, her voice crisp and echoing. “Were you hungry making your way over here from so far away?”
“Oh, well…” Magnus responded. “I am a bit thirsty, Somna. But I assure you I don’t have to eat now; seeing your face again is nourishment enough.”
Originally this would have been the moment Somnambula bounded over to hug Flash Magnus; his tone had gotten a lot more playful. It reminded Somnambula so much of the games they used to play, both before and after the Pony of Shadows stormed into and out of their lives. Some of their games were more… thrilling than others.
But Somnambula’s hooves did not move an inch now. Her eyes stayed locked on the box lying innocently in her fridge, the vast emptiness still taunting her within its pastel cover. And her resolve, burning brightly enough in her chest to make her breaths short, only grew.
“That so?” she taunted, readying her kill shot. “And would ‘my face’ be the chaser for a heaping helping of strawberry frosting, perhaps?”
“W-what do you mean?”
Oh, no way was Magnus getting away with that stammer. “My pastry, Magnus!” Somnambula cried, slamming the fridge with far more force than intended. “My last pastry! I was saving it for when I got back from my classes! And only one pony could have taken it!”
Silence reigned so heavily that Somnambula worried she’d made Magnus faint. Of course, that gave way to indignancy, a roiling sense of wrongness that had ruled her day ever since she’d opened that fridge for her well-deserved treat and found nothing but air.

So he had said during that hot Saddle Arabian night. So she had learned, both during that amazing night and after, when he’d brokered a treaty between them and the Royal Guard. But now? Somnambula wasn’t so sure. “Then explain yourself, Magnus. Please.”
“I just said that I hadn’t eaten your donut,” Magnus responded. “Not that I hadn’t taken it.”
“But…” The question died on Somnambula’s lips. What was Magnus playing at this time? Why take her donut—her gooey, opulent, perfectly crafted donut—and not eat it?
Certainly, she was happy about that.
Yet there was something she was missing in Magnus’ actions. And she vowed to find out what.
Relenting at last, Somnambula followed them to where Magnus’ voice had trickled from, down the short hallways of her house. Her heart, while not in her throat, was beating so loud that she could hear it. She wanted answers but wasn’t sure she’d floss them out this time.
But her jaw dropped like a waterfall when she turned into her dining room and found the wayward hoplite.
Magnus always cut an imposing figure before; the fringe on his helmet and his prize-winning grin had been proof of that. But here, in this low-ceilinged lodging, he looked like a marble carved from pure amber. The amber light cast upon him only served to make him look more mouthwatering, brought by candles Somnambula had originally lit to fight against the creeping evening darkness.
What was weird about this encounter—what made Somnambula’s mind almost shatter at the sight of it—was twofold. The first was the lost donut of hers, fully intact and pinched between Magnus’ waving fingers like a golden nugget. “Wow, Somna. It does seem like you’ve got it bad for these sweets.” Again that donut drifted closer to Magnus’ lips, and again, his lips pursed. Almost on the verge of nibbling on its impossibly flaky crust. “Are they that great to eat?”
