It was busy as usual in Manehatten, and Coco Pommel hummed as she worked on her next round of dresses for Bridleway. Her career was on the upswing with the help of Rarity, and she was looking forward to her visit soon. Her friend was visiting to see the newest play for which she was working on costume designs, after which, they would meet backstage and catch up. The day had been planned perfectly, and all she needed to do was finish up the dresses.
Knock knock knock!
The designer darted her head towards her apartment’s front door at the sound of a sudden knocking. “Um, yes? Hello?” She called out. No response. That’s odd, she thought as she approached the door. I don’t think I was expecting a visitor today.
Opening the door, she gasped at what she was met with: Nopony. There was nopony in the halls, and nothing around save for a box left on the floor with her name on it. Upon closer inspection, the box had no return address or indication of what was inside.
Okay, Coco thought with a bit more confidence. I’m almost positive that I haven’t ordered anything! This could be some kind of trick! Just as she was getting her nerve, it vanished and became replaced with doubt. “A-Although… Could it have been a prop the department ordered and just forgot to mention? It could have been an honest mistake… A-And it is addressed to me, so it’s not a crime if I open it…”
Against her better judgment, Coco slowly opened the box. Inside was nothing more than a hat. It was a colorful jester’s hat, decorated in swirls and with spiral-decorated bells on the end of each sleeve. Around the brim of the hat was a golden rim along with a single blue gem that glowed in the light.
“Oh my,” the mare gasped as she took the hat out. “This… This is quite the hat…! Whoever designed it must have been pretty skilled… I wonder if the costume department did order this for another show. I’ll have to bring it up to them later.”
As she talked to herself, her eyes stayed focused on the gem. Its odd glow in the light of the sun was surprisingly alluring, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t look away for more than a couple of moments. Looking at it just made her… Smile. She had a small smile at first, jingling the bells with her hoof and giving a soft giggle. However, curiosity got the better of her and she gently slipped it on. The fit was perfect, almost as if it was made for her.

As she thought that, the gem’s light glow began to get brighter, and the bells quickly followed suit. Soon, Coco’s head became surrounded by the glow, one her eyes couldn’t avoid. Soon, her cyan eyes became overcome in a blue spiral, spinning around and around and making her mare feel dizzier and dizzier.

It wasn’t until she noticed a nearby toppled mannequin and some fabric that those disjointed thoughts started to take form. The next day in the Bridleway theater, the mares of the play, from actresses to production to even the director herself, were huddled up in the costume room. “Was this Coco…?”

The director, the mature Ms. Showboat, was far more skeptical. Nopony worthed that hard and fast without collapsing in on themselves or suffering quality issues. If anything, she was a bit concerned the mare might’ve overdone it and would need some days off to recover. However, she needed to see the state of the costumes. She stepped forward and slowly removed the cloth covering them…
The mares gasped in shock. Standing before them were a number of costumes, but all of them were the same: jester outfits, each one unique in color but all spouting spiral designs and overdesigned jester hats. Suddenly, the whispers changed in tone.
“Has she lost her mind…??”
“Jesters have nothing to do with this production…!”
“Oh, the colors clashing… I’m going to faint…!”
This time, Ms. Showboat was more irritated than concerned. Rubbing her face with a groan, she looked to her crew. “Has anyone seen Ms. Pommel? I’m going to speak with her immediately.”
“Riiiiight here boss~!”
The sudden chipper tone caught everypony off guard, each mare looking around for its source. A mare leaped from the back, spinning several times before landing facefirst right beside the director. Everypony gasped and winced, but as soon as they saw who it was and that she was fine, their looks returned to shock and confusion. Standing there was Coco Pommel, her body wrapped in a jester suit that matched the ones on the mannequins. It was colored in bright red and blue and clung to every inch of her body, leaving nothing to the imagination. This time, Ms. Showboat prepared to lay out a serious grilling, but when Coco shook her head to shake the stars away, the jingling made everypony tense up, wobble in place, and relax for half a second. The director cleared her throat with a blush.
“M-Ms. Pommel! Care to explain what these are?” She pointed with her hoof to the outfits, but the derpy-eyed jester designer looked at the costumes and burst into a flurry of giggles.
“Those’re jester clothes, boss! I woulda thought ya knew what those were! Guess I’m smarter than tha boss!” As Coco rolled on the floor and giggled loudly, Ms. Showboat huffed out of her nostrils and put her hoof down. This caused Coco to look up, her smile dipping slightly.
“Ms. Pommel! I did not ask you to make these outfits! We do not need jesters!”
“Why not?”
Before Ms. Showboat could respond, she was met with the jingling of Coco’s glowing bells. Her thoughts wavered off, her eyes focused on the bells. They sounded nice, and they made her brain feel… G-Good… She shook her head to try and focus. “B-Because, this production has no jesters!”
“Awww, but why?” Coco giggled and jingled her cap-n-bells in Showboat’s face. “They’re so silly and sexy and fuuuun~! Don’t you like having fun, Boaty~?”

I think I’ll treat her to dinner and a spa day for pulling something like this off… She thought as the lights dimmed.
“Fillies and gentlecolts! Welcome to Bridleway! We’ve got quite the show for you today!” The voice that seemed to come from nowhere was zippy, bombastic, and more fitting in a circus than a theater. The audience looked confused. “Now, put your hooves together for the juggling jesters, the pratfalling fools, it’s Boaty’s Big Butt Buffons!!”
The curtains pulled open, revealing a stage that had been plastered in clashing colors, swirling spirals, and jester iconography as far as the eye could see. Several mares in jester outfits leaped about, performing admittedly impressive acrobatic moves followed by slapstick. They made cornball jokes and humiliated themselves, which was especially shocking as the director Ms. Showboat, now going by Boaty, was being used as a throne for Queen Coco, Queen of Fools, who would bonk her subjects with a golden scepter. It was so hard to tell if this was a parody of Equestrian rule or a lowbrow attempt at laughs, but as the girls performed and their glowing bells jingled, the audience began to chuckle. Then, they began to laugh. Then the laughing didn’t stop.
Even Rarity, who wasn’t known for indulging in this kind of humor, couldn’t help but burst into a giggle fit as a jester mare slipped down a flight of stairs and ended up in the crotch of another jester mare. It was a nonsensical farce that she couldn’t look away from. The sounds of bells jingled in her mind, making the tickling feeling in her head happen over and over. She started to forget her stresses and worries as the production went on. Then, she started to forget what she was planning on doing when she finished. Then, she forgot more and more, her mind filling with sillier and sillier thoughts.
