Ambrosia
Looking through the final remnants of reports that had trickled up to me. Running an entire country even with ponies that knew what they were doing was still a process that took time and effort. Canterlot alone had nearly 150,000 ponies within its boundaries after the last of the refugees had settled down. All but doubling the initial population of Canterlot from two years ago. Each of these ponies needed to be fed, watered, and given a roof over their heads. The amount of planning that it took to provide these things was astronomical.
Then there was ensuring that the ponies that remained outside of Canterlot’s walls were safe, which meant ensuring that there were enough guard ponies available for each of the remaining settlements. Which in turn led to conscriptions being implemented which while no pony was happy about it, they all knew that it was a necessary evil. A phrase that back when Celestia was still in charge would have never been uttered much less thought.
However, Celestia no longer reigned over Equestria. I, Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, did. I was the pony that put every single one of her ponies before her. The one that stood between them and the growing tides of darkness and corruption that threatened their lives. It was my job to perform those necessary evils. All to make a brighter tomorrow.
Shaking my head off those last errant thoughts as I signed the decree to have the newest regiment of trained guards posted at Manehatten. They had been relatively self-sufficient, but I didn’t trust that Discord would leave one of the cities that had survived one of his so-called pranks.
Even if the spirit of Disharmony and Chaos didn’t show it would be better to have some more guard presence there. My spymaster, Raven Inkwell had reported that one of her spies had reported that Blazing Shimmer had not been seen for some time. While it was technically a good thing that the mad mage hadn’t been seen, just as I didn’t trust Discord to leave those ponies alone, I did not trust this pony that fashioned themself a conqueror.
Not that they had conquered much, mostly they were acting as thieves. Stealing magical artifacts, books, and trinkets. Along with as many bits they could stuff into their pockets. They were a constant thorn in Manehatten. What was more concerning was the fact that it was rumored that they, just like me, were another Alicorn. One if those rumors were to be believed was the second coming of Celestia herself.
While I wished that was true, if it was, I would have happily abdicated the throne and crown to their hooves, however, they were a criminal that helped no pony but themselves. Only concerning themselves with whatever treasure they had set out to pilfer. They were no closer to being the second coming of Celestia than I was. It was as if I had quickly learned an impossible goal. No pony could be Celestia, for to be Celestia was to be perfect. I was unsure how Celestia herself had managed the act. Had I been able to ask her I would have happily absorbed such fruits of knowledge.
Setting the final leaflet down upon its predecessors, as I stretched my wings, enjoying the slight thrum that the action sent throughout my body. “That’s the last of them. Please give them to Prince Blueblood.” I both commanded and ordered the guards that had remained in the room with me over the last three hours. Immediately one moved forward and took the large pile within his telekinetic grasp before galloping off to find Blueblood. More than likely he was still in a conference with the oddly named Mayor Mare.
Normally I would have been personally dealing with her, as she had been ensuring that the ponies that had fled from Ponyville were doing well. An important and vital discussion but I, however, was about to be indisposed for the next 24 hours. Not in any form of sickness or crisis, no. Instead, I would be all but fleeing from my responsibilities to the crown that had adorned my head.
I had tried to do my best for every pony on a near constant basis. However, I was not Celestia, I wasn’t even close. I had initially attempted to work every single day to ensure that no pony fell through any cracks that I could have been leaving. It took me six months, and an intervention to realize that if I could not take care of myself, I could not take care of any pony else. So, in my weakness I gave myself a day of freedom from my many responsibilities.
One where I would not be contacted for any reason other than a major threat to my subjects. Otherwise, the ponies that I had delegated powers to would be the ones running the country for that time. I would spend those 24 precious hours however I wanted, whether that was engorging myself on fine wines and cheeses or spending my time getting a deep sleep.
I had, however, found a much more pleasurable way to relieve my stress. One that I knew would certainly cause even more discontent throughout my subjects. But I couldn’t care, I had given nearly my entire being for them, I would keep my one day a month where I would put myself first.
Breathing in the crisp air that flowed throughout the castle as I listened to the countless raindrops impacting the roof of my castle. I would have to ensure that the Pegasi that oversaw the weather had received the updated rotation… I would do that and then I would start my 24 hours.
Grabbing a quill and a blank sheet of parchment I quickly penned out the alterations that would be going into effect in three days’ time to accommodate the cold front coming from the north. I was praying to Celestia that there would be no deaths, however I was realistically expecting 60-80 of my ponies to perish when the cold found its way to Canterlot. If I was better at manipulating the Sun perhaps, I could have done more, but sadly I was still learning to manipulate the two celestial bodies that Celestia had masterfully manipulated.
Sending the letter off with a mental command I rose from my seat and began to make my way towards my personal chambers. The royal guards that escorted me were silent, even if the rapid pounding of their hearts betrayed their true feelings. They knew that I would be slipping free of their protective gaze, yet they could do nothing to stop me. The first time a guard had interrupted the time I had given to myself I had all but given him a lobotomy.
It was accidental and I had fixed him when I realized what I had done, but it did cause my guards to be more on edge whenever they knew I had one of my days off scheduled. Rebound didn’t even hold it against me, his wife Gentle Breeze however still held enough hate in her heart towards me for them both. Just another example of how I had once more failed my ponies. I was certain that Celestia had never accidentally rewrote one of her guards’ minds.
Ending that train of thoughts as I made it to the door that held my momentary freedom. A transient escape from this life of endless tragedy. One that only kept growing worse. Putting my hoof to the door as the two guards that escorted me fell into position before the door. Pushing it open and slipping inside a room that normally I only entered to get a quick four hours of sleep before I continued with the endless deluge of tasks, however this time was different.
This time I smiled as I closed the door behind me. Flipping the hourglass that was floating in the center of the room. The first grain of sand fell to the bottom as I slipped through reality itself. Flickers of light flew past my eyes as I teleported towards my destination. A cacophony of noise heralded my otherwise silent arrival. A further spell followed as I stepped into reality once more, not as an Alicorn, but once more as a Pegasus.
Thunder echoed in turn with the pounding of hooves that danced across the cobbled floor. I knew that for many within Equestria, no, even in Equus, it would have been an impossible feat to be able to decipher the muddled noise into usable information. That would have held true for me some time ago. Not anymore, as I could clearly hear the distinct impacts of the 167 ponies that were making their way through the same street as I.
Each moving towards their own unique destination. Each with a tale that would likely be left unknown to me. Even if they were my citizens. It was impossible to know them each by name. Not even Celestia herself could do so. Instead, much like my predecessor I focused on improving my citizens’ lives as a gestalt entity, not as an individual. My strength used to bear the burdens that they could not. Tragedy after tragedy.
The weight of the crown, however, was one that even bore down on my head. The boons of ascension could not allow me to escape from the consequences of my own actions. My decisions that would impact countless ponies that relied on me. I had my advisors, but every pony knew that the final decision came down to the Princess that ruled Equestria.
“No.” I whispered as I forced that thought to end. I had one day where I would not be Princess Mi Amore Cadenza. Where I would no longer be beholden to the weight and responsibilities of the crown that had fallen to me. Raising my gaze to the half rotten wooden door that held the promise of brief freedom from my assumed role.
I could feel the timer continue to wind down. Each further moment I wasted I would not be able to retrieve. Each second lost further compounded upon the last. Stepping forwards from the illusioned air. I was no longer an Alicorn Princess but instead I once more was a nameless Pegasus. All achieved using a spell that Celestia herself had taught me. One of the more useful ones that I had acquired through her teachings. No doubt the Princess of the Sun would frown at how I was using the spell that she had taught me.
Letting lose my breath, I had involuntarily been holding out as I joined the thronging tide of ponies making their way through the street. Even as I brushed against my subjects, I hardened my heart as I allowed their grief to wash over me. Right now, I was not their Princess. They would have to survive until I reclaimed the throne. I was not Celestia. No matter how much I strived towards that impossible goal, I could never achieve it. I could never be Celestia.
Pushing through the crowd, continuing the journey towards my destination, until a piercing cry echoed. A foal crying out in pain as she slipped from the cart she had been riding atop. The one that was pulling the cart didn't even seem to notice, instead she continued forwards. I could hear the gritting of the teeth of my ponies as they looked upon the sight. Yet much like how I did nothing, they did not offer a hoof.
They were far more concerned with their own struggles. Their own personal problems. They simply allowed their gaze to skip over the yellow foal that was attempting to catch up with the cart and pony that pulled it.
“Wait up Sis!” The foal shouted as she attempted to catch up to the cart and her sister that was still pulling it. Her sister did not hear her, she couldn’t not with the damage to her ears. The scabbed flesh of what was once the elder mare's ears was unlikely to hear even the shrill shoutings of her sister who was quickly becoming lost to the crowd.
I could feel the hearts of my ponies harden at the shouts. Their thoughts were clearly written upon their hearts. They could not afford to share their Love. Not with a pony that they did not know. No longer did ponies concern themselves with the greater herd. But only themselves and the ones that they knew.
Celestia would be ashamed of her ponies. She would be horrified that I was just like them. That I was motionlessly watching the growing tragedy without stepping forwards. I could hear the precious sands of time that I had gifted to myself continue to trickle into oblivion. Twisting my gaze from the current tragedy that I could see as I once more focused upon my destination.
When I once more met Celestia she could admonish me then. Unlike her I was not perfect. I couldn’t do what she had managed to do. Even my best didn’t even match up to half of what she could do. “Please Applejack! Please don’t leave me behind!” I could hear the tears grow in the filly’s eyes and impact the street as she attempted to catch up to her now-named elder sister. “We have to stick together!”
Even now I was a failure. Ignoring the door that was quickly approaching as I pushed through the crowd. Making my way towards the foal that was managing to avoid being trampled upon but making no progress towards her sister. A few minutes, I would spend a few minutes to prevent this tragedy. Then the rest would be mine.
“Little one, would you like some help?” I asked the foal as she ducked away from another set of uncaring hooves. Her tear-filled orange eyes glanced at me as she backed away hesitantly. No pony expected a helping hoof. Especially not one without a cost. That didn't stop me from reaching out with my wing and pulling the light olive colored filly from the path of a cart that would have trampled her. Instead of the thanks that I would have once expected I only felt the faint rebuking as the filly attempted to escape my clutches.
“Let go of me! You foal-napper!” The filly screamed. Her fear-filled words found no purchase upon any of the ponies that were surrounding us. I could hear the hate filled mutterings and felt the glares of the evermoving tide of ponies. But none as much lifted a hoof to stop me from this crime.
“Little one, I am not attempting to separate you from your sister.” I softly stated. My words do little to calm the frightened filly. She instead continued to attempt to break through my grasp. If I was indeed one that sought her harm it was likely that she would have been released. After all, she was creating all sorts of ruckus. Unfortunately for her this street had limited guard presence. “If anything, I am willing to return you to her.” I intoned as I allowed the spell to fragment before the frightened filly.
Instantly she stopped her struggle. Her eyes no longer filled with fear, instead now brimming with an all-too-common awed adoration. Before the filly could gather the courage to speak, I continued. “Will you allow me to help you little one?” The still unnamed yet awe struck filly nodded.
I gave her a small smile as I placed her on my back before pushing through the crowded street. Following the four hoofs impacting the stone and the cart that trailed along after her.
“Are you really the new Princess?” The filly whispered into my ear as we closed in upon her sister. I couldn’t help the sigh of annoyance that slipped from my muzzle, I had been the ruling Princess for a little over two years at this point. If she wasn't sure she shouldn't have stopped her struggle. I could have easily been a pony that had meant her harm.
“Even if I wasn't, I have brought you to your sister.” I answered as I gestured to the stopped cart with the pony named Applejack now worriedly looking around. No doubt searching for her missing sister that was atop my back. When she noticed me, I could see the relief flash through her eyes. Followed quickly by a cloying concern.
Pulling the unnamed filly from my back and placing her upon the street once more. “In the future you should ensure to not leave your sister's sight.” I chided as I pushed her forwards. My prodding allowed the filly to begin its charge towards its elder sister. I kept a watchful eye on her to ensure that she made it to her sister's hooves. Only when she was safely in her siblings’ embrace did I turn around.
Preventing this tragedy cost me five minutes. Five minutes that I had given. Five minutes to prevent a filly from being lost in the horde of ponies. Five minutes to save Applejack from searching for her sister. Worrying that she would be unable to find her. Preventing a pony from snatching the filly away to never be seen again.
Five minutes that I would never get back.
I took a deep breath as I allowed the sand to dissipate into the abyss. Ignoring the welling hatred that proved I was nothing like Celestia. That proved that I was not ready to rule over Equestria. That Alicorn or not, proved that I was not as good of a pony as Celestia had thought I was.
It took another two minutes to make it back to the rotten door that had the faint depiction of a blue Pegasus. I could feel my heartbeat faster as I placed my hoof against the decrepit door. Heat began to flood through my body in anticipation of what laid beyond.
The door crept open with a soft creak that was swallowed in the thrum of noise that emanated from the street. Beyond the door was but a staircase that led down to my true destination. Involuntarily swallowing as I stepped inside and closed the door behind me. Enshrouding me in a faint darkness that promised an escape from my current life.
There were no fires I must extinguish. No ponies to impossibly please. There were no guards that shadowed my every step. None of that. No longer was I the Princess of Love, the ruler of Equestria. I was once more only Cadance. A feat that I once thought was impossible was turned into reality through my work.
I had a kingdom to run, citizens to please, and enemies to fight. I understood that I even accepted that my life no longer was my own. I had responsibilities that were more than who I was. I was the only pony that could step into this role. I was the one that had taken up the mantle to continue to move the Sun and Moon after…
Taking another calming breath that allowed the tenseness that should never adorn Cadance’s wings to flee. That was something that only Princess Mi Amore Cadenza should have rested upon her. Here in the Forlorn Mare I was just another pony. Another face and name that would be remembered for one night. Before being forgotten in the deluge of all the rest.
Making it to the bottom of the stairs where a rather burly Unicorn was standing. His glazed eyes looked over me. Awaiting the password to this fine establishment. To ensure that I was not one of the royal guards. That was after all how I had learned of this place. Through a report on the establishment.
A wretched lair of sin and debauchery that didn’t care who you were. You left your grievances and problems at the door. In return you could mingle with others that were likeminded. Without any rules that could limit the experience.
It was still unknown who ran this establishment but whoever they were had a great deal of power. Both in a fiscal sense and politically. The bribes that were supplied were generous, bordering on bountiful. There was also the clientele who patronized this place. From the nobles that had still clung to their wealth and power to the criminals who had thrived in the recent chaos.
The first time I had been here was on an impulse. The justification was to gather evidence and then shut it down myself. After all, if none of the ponies beneath me could do such a thing then I would have to step in where they failed. I had come here, thankfully in disguise before floundering before the bouncer. That was until I, in my desperation, slipped into his mind and acquired the passphrase.
On paper it was a simple bar that was more suited to those of more affluent means. However, it was something much more. After all, not every so-called bar had a former battlemage as its bouncer. One that had personally served under Celestia for over 15 years in fact.
Blue Flare was his name, and he performed an admirable job. Keeping guard and preventing every pony that did not know the specified phrase from gaining access. Which included my guards that had attempted to gain access. I wonder what his reaction would be if he was to ever realize that I was the reigning princess.
“Every match is made in paradise.” I huskily whispered to Blue Flare. Who nodded at me before his horn lit with a pale blue haze. A door appeared from the stone behind him. An almost velvet red coloring accented the otherwise bronze door that slowly opened. Revealing my temporary paradise. “Thank you.” I said as I made my way inside. Feeling his gaze trail after me as I stepped past him.
I could hear the slight increase in the repetitions of his heart as he stared after me. Until just as quickly as it appeared the summoned door once more closed. Leaving me in a silent realm that separated Equus from the Forlorn Mare. Even if some pony had forced their way past Blue Flare there was no way to get into this secondary door.
Whether it was a Unicorn, an artifact, or even Discord himself, I knew not. All I knew was that it was impossible for any pony other than perhaps myself to pierce this place's boundaries. I was not willing to dispose of the one place where I could once more be myself. So here this place stayed for all those that were willing to seek it.
It took another few minutes of walking through this passage of stone and magic. This was not a waste in my mind even as I watched the sand continue to fall. After all this was the final hurdle before I could allow myself to once more buck the expectations that every pony including myself had.
Hurriedly making my way to the opulent amber encrusted door. The final test to see if you were a pony that was welcome in this haven. Placing my hoof on its handle as I was whisked away to my destination.
My ears were assaulted with the sounds of ponies sharing bliss and pleasure. The clinking of glasses against each other and the ever-present thrum of music that gently resounded throughout the establishment. My eyes tracing the denizens who were already embracing the freedoms that this place afforded them.
From the various ponies that were gambling enough bits to make a banker blush, to the group that was greedily gulping down a red cocktail that I knew had blood within its mix. There were almost no taboos here. You were free to enjoy yourself to your heart’s content.
Smiling as I strode through the ponies that were dancing with one another making my way directly towards the bar. I wasn’t here to explore this place. I was here to have fun. I only had 23 hours and 13 minutes left. Keeping my gaze moving to see if there were any that would catch my interest.
Unfortunately, there were no ponies that leapt out at me. None that had drawn my attention in any way. Such a shame. I turned my gaze from the denizens that were on the dance floor to those that were in some of the side booths. Seeing a few ponies that I recognized as ones that had petitioned to have me go to war with the Griffons and their fledgling empire, over the recent annexation of the tip of Zebrica.
Why they thought I would willingly enter Equestria into another conflict now was beyond me. Even if some of the delegation that sought to further embroil my nation in the depths of war, were rather attractive. They were not to the degree that I was willing to let their stupidity pass.
I wistfully glanced at where those were embracing their baser urges upon themselves, and others were located. It was beyond my vision, but I could hear every single moan that was uttered. Each thrust resounded in my ears. The countless declarations of love that were exchanged by those fully embracing Love.
Even if it was not the type of Love that I preached to my citizens. I was not so shallow to not admit that I did not embrace all facets of Love. I was Love. In its totality. I would not shy away from that.
Luckily for me it appeared that now that the bar was relatively empty. Two ponies were making their way through a large brown bottle that smelled of the earth and another that appeared to be passed out. His breathing, however, indicated that he was awake.
“What can I get you?” asked the pink Earth Pony who was all but juggling a set of cocktail shakers as I sat on one of the open stools. I just shrugged at the bartender's question. She, however, decided that was an acceptable answer to her question. “Coming right up.” She declared as she spun away on two hooves. Shaking my head at the bartender's antics I continued my pony watching, still searching for some pony that piqued my interest.
Unfortunately, even with the sand continuing to fall I could find no pony that was truly interesting. I would rather not just find some random pony to use as stress relief but that wouldn’t stop me. I had done so before and would do so again. However, I would prefer them to be something even barely more interesting.
“What are you even making for me?” I questioned the bartender who had proceeded to pull out some fruits that I hadn’t even seen before.
“I don’t know!” The bartender laughed as she pulled a blender out from beneath the counter and proceeded to put the entire fruits in it. Before turning the machine on it began to emulsify the fruit. I was initially hoping that there was a drink called ‘I don’t know’ however considering the way that the blender was starting to smoke I knew that was a long shot.
At the very least the bartender seemed eccentric. That would do in a pinch. Straightening on the stool, pushing my wings slightly. Yet before I could even begin my proposition, she turned off the blender. “I am flattered but taken.” she said with a grin as she poured the now blended juice into a strainer. There went that idea. Slouching back and no longer presenting myself as I had before, slightly groaning at being so quickly shot down. Who was the Alicorn of Love again?
“Is there any pony that is interesting around here then?” I asked as she added my drink to the rotation of juggled drinks. She paused the juggling as tilted her head in an over exaggerated display of confusion.
“Well interesting is a rather subjective view that depends on the pony’s internal perceptions rather than a well-defined and consistent basis.” The bartender managed to get that out in a single breath. I would admit in the privacy of my own mind that it was a rather impressive showing. Otherwise, however I simply rolled my eyes at the pink bartender. Who shrugged in response as she poured out one of the shakers into a glass that hadn’t been there a moment prior.
She hummed as she pulled out a little pink drink umbrella before daintily placing it upon the drink. “One I don’t Know.” She then proceeded to push the drink over to me. I sniffed at the fruity drink. A grin formed on my muzzle as I smelled the hidden spirit that was submerged beneath the fruit. In comparison to the almost sickly sweet of the juice from the numerous fruits that had been blended.
“My thanks.” I said as I gingerly grasped the chilled glass and took a small sip. My tongue was enveloped by the delightful dancing of citrus and sour, entwined with the sweet fruit juices. All orchestrated by the silent yet not unnoticed spirit which I quickly identified as moon fire. Smoothly bringing the entire drink together. “It tastes good. Where did you learn to make such a drink?” I asked after I took another few sips.
“Well, I used to practice making all sorts of concoctions and confectionaries back in Ponyville. However, when I got to Canterlot no pony needed a chef or another baker so I decided that being a bartender would be fun.” The bartender smiled wistfully as she mentioned her old home. Now only a blasted wasteland that held ruins of the town. Something that was far too common, I grimaced as I continued to drink. “Could have turned out worse. The boss pays me well and I have her express opinion to be as creative as I can be. What more could I wish for with a job?”
It was after that declaration that my bartender paused. Before shaking her head in disgust. “Well, she doesn't like her birthday and has forbidden me from throwing her a party.” I just continued to listen to the bartender’s tale, wistfully shaking my head. However, when she started to talk about this boss of hers my interest as the reigning Princess of the realm was intrigued.
“This boss of yours doesn’t like her birthday?” I questioned after I took another deep sip from the glass. Draining the delicious drink, I motioned for another. The pink pony that had been serving me took the now empty glass as she nodded.
“Yep!” She popped the ‘p’ as she spoke before she began to grab another assortment of fruits. “She was born on the same day as the Summer Sun Celebration…” She trailed off after that. Her ever-present grin which didn't even falter when she was talking about her old home faltered. I felt my own heart freeze as I was forcibly brought back to that day. That fateful day when Nightmare Moon had returned. She made her attempt to enshroud the entirety of Equus in eternal night.
Celestia had met the crazed immortal and they had fought. The battle between the two Alicorns would be one that history could not forget. Even with Celestia doing her best to limit those impacted by the fighting. There had still been devastation on a grand scale. The conclusion of the fight was no better. That final moment Celestia had ensured Nightmare Moon’s complete destruction at a cost that I knew many found far too much. One that I knew was far too weighty of a cost that she had paid.
We both allowed the silence to exist for a few more moments before I lightly coughed.
“It is understandable that your boss does not wish to celebrate her day of birth then.” I personally as a Princess had attempted to drag the celebration back to its original purpose of spreading joy and warmth, but I had failed. The once joyous day was now tainted with death and destruction. For one that had been borne on what was once such a bright day now to only have it a shadowed corpse of its former glory… It was another tragedy that I would have to correct.
“Yeah…” The bartender slowly nodded before plastering a smile that would have likely fooled every pony that could not feel the sadness that still weighed upon her heart. “But enough of this talk of worse times. Here you are in the Forlorn Mare. Paradise is at your pleasure.” She spoke with a false cheer as she once more began to stuff the blender with fruit.
“Well, your boss certainly sounds interesting. Why don’t you tell me about her?” I asked as I leaned forward. A sly smile upon my lips. I was beautiful, I have known that for some time. With an additional pulling of the bartender’s kinder emotions, she would be quickly gushing about her boss.
A faint blush adorning her almost pastel pink cheeks. Too bad she already had a special some pony in her heart. Even if she wasn’t the type of pony to take me by the reins. I would have had fun with her. I would have her under my complete control. Not a muscle moved, unless I gave her permission. I couldn’t help but lick my lips at those delectable thoughts.
Which in turn caused her to nearly drop the shaker. Thankfully she managed to grab it before it hit the ground. Immediately I stopped plucking at her emotions. Taking a breath and ensuring that I hadn’t irrevocably changed who she was. Luckily it was a quick fix. No lasting harm.
“Of course.” She stuttered out as she refused to look me in the eyes. Taking a deep breath to stifle the moan that she let out. “Sunset is probably one of the greatest Unicorns alive today. I have seen her cast spells that defy what is possible. While she is certainly abrasive, she does care about helping her ponies. Once she claims you as one of hers, she does her best to ensure that you are taken care of.” She continues under her breath mainly focusing on the cocktail she is creating.
I couldn’t help but flash a smile at her words. Now I had a name for this oh so elusive owner of the Forlorn Mare. Sunset, a Unicorn that defied what is possible. One who claimed her ponies and ensured that they were properly taken care of. I wonder if she would like to claim me. I felt a familiar heat blossom at that all too delectable thought.
“Tell me what one would have to do to be claimed by Sunset?” I nearly vibrated as I hissed that word out. The still unnamed bartender paused in the middle of shaking the cocktail. Her vibrant sky-blue eyes found my gaze once more as she glared at me. The light anger didn’t compliment her joyous face.
“She is just as much of a prude as the Princess of Love.” Who said I was a prude? I was certainly not! That rumor had no basis in any form of fact! “- I have seen her shoot down countless Stallions and Mares who thought they had a shot. They never did, and I doubt you have one either.” With that said she poured the shaken drink into a glass. Placing an amber umbrella upon it and sliding it over. “I’m taking my break.” With that said she pulls out a small sign that read ‘Back in 10’
“Sorry.” I muttered at the back of the retreating mare who didn’t even glance back at me as she retreated through one of the adorning doors. I could hear her forceful footsteps impacting the floor as she stomped off. “Touchy subject.” I sighed out.
There I went and ruined a pleasant enough conversation and more than likely would be cut off for the rest of the night. I had failed both Cadance and Princess Mi Amore Cadenza. First to have her point me towards some pony that was interesting. Second, to gain more information about this elusive ‘Sunset’ pony.
It wasn’t exactly an uncommon name. With Celestia’s reign lasting for a millennium, there were countless ponies that had been named in her image. I knew three Sundrops alone.
If I could have been pointed in her direction, I could have likely accomplished both Cadance and Princess Mi Amore Cadenza’s goals. I would have been ravished by Sunset and been able to listen to her heart. If she was an evil that I could live with I would allow her business to continue unobstructed for the moment. I had no proof that any pony within the Forlorn Mare was being forced to be here against their will, and I had more important problems to deal with.
In the future after everything was within my grasp, I would likely attempt to reign her and her establishment in. Now however, it was a shame that I had chased away my best shot for both a good lay and a chance to meet this Sunset in person.
I turned back to my drink and began to drown my sorrows as I mournfully counted down the grains of sand that continued to trickle by. Maybe I would grab Proudhoof again, he was forceful enough the last time. Even if he had no stamina. Hopefully some pony would stand out before I resorted to him. Listlessly I drained my drink and placed my head on the bar. This day of freedom was quickly becoming a failure.
Closing my eyes, I immersed myself in the sounds that spread throughout the Forlorn Mare. From the squelches of interconnecting flesh to the tongues battling for dominance I embraced it all. The conversations I ignored, that was until I heard a group talking about Celestia. Disparaging the sacrifice that she had made for all her ponies, including them.
“It’s all Celestia’s fault. She was the one that died, leaving no pony able to properly run Equestria.” A stallion whose heart was hammering against his ribcage laughed out. “I mean have you seen how much the newest so-called ‘Princess’ is floundering. I swear some pony should show her how to rule the kingdom.” His words were nothing that I hadn't heard before, but that didn’t stop the growing rage that they spurned.
“I swear all she goes on about love, no pony has ever seen her with another pony.” His fellow partner coughed out after he downed his own drink. “You know how my sister works in the castle, right? She says that the new Princess doesn’t even know how to take a break. She is far too busy failing to rule.” This pony’s heart was erratically beating. Filled with rage and indignation.
“I swear if I was an Alicorn I would have been able to do a better job than she has been. I mean how easy would it be to do better than she already has been? I just wouldn’t fail!” The final of the trio of ponies laughed out. Her heart was beating the slowest of them all. Yet her words managed to enrage me the most.
They knew nothing about what I was doing. What I was personally sacrificing to ensure that Equestria would continue to exist. How much thankless work went into ensuring their safety. They didn’t care.
Looking over to the booth that I had been listening to, I spotted my newest hecklers. Two earth ponies and a Pegasus. Each was a shade of green. I thankfully didn’t recognize them. That meant that I wouldn't hold it against them… Probably. It was a hard time for every pony.
“At least she is hot. I mean have you two ever seen her?” The first stallion that I had heard commented. “What I wouldn't do to spend the day with her.” At his words the other two ponies looked at him in confusion.
“Didn’t you get fired from the guard because of her new rules? And that was after you were all but forced into becoming one of her newest toy soldiers.” The other earth pony asked after she set down her drink.
“Yes, and I would be glad to take it out on her.” Now that was a line of thinking that I preferred. Apparently, it was my fault that this stallion was out of a job… Well, it sounds like I had indeed initially given him one, and then taken it away. Perhaps I should go allow him to take out his frustrations on me. Even if he didn't realize that he was pounding into the very pony that he blamed, I certainly would. I felt the cooling warmth that had blossomed earlier vigorously renewed.
Oh yes that certainly would be enjoyable. I writhed on my seat as I imagined it. Perhaps his other two friends would be willing to join in on the fun. Taking out their frustrations upon the object of their hatred for a pony would be happy to substitute for the Princess herself. Pushing myself up from the bar I began to make my way over to the table. A near scalding heat pushed me forwards from my very center.
“Grassy didn’t you say that the only reason that Mi Amore was an Alicorn was because she was Celestia’s bastard daughter?” The Pegasus questioned and unknowingly froze me in my tracks. All my interest in something carnal with the three, irrevocably shattered.
I had ascended due to my own actions. I had done the impossible myself, and defied the fate that should have struck me down. Not because of my birth. Celestia was not my mother. I had asked her that question myself and she of all ponies did not lie. She, after all, was perfect. I all but glared at the three ponies who spoke of things that were far beyond what they knew of.
“Excuse me but if you wouldn’t mind, I would like to get you a drink.” a voice asked from beside me as I nearly jumped out of my skin. Twisting my head, I could see an amber Unicorn who had somehow managed to sneak up on me. She was mostly covered by a cloak, but her mane was a sharp red alternating with an almost glowing yellowish orange. It reminded me of the Sun itself, right before it was entirely subsumed by the night.
“Sweet Celestia! How did you do that?” I exclaimed as I stared at the Unicorn who had not existed before she had announced herself. Even focusing on her now I could not hear her heart, nor could I feel the emotions that fueled it. It was as if I was staring at an illusionary pony. One that seemed real but was just a simulacrum of the real thing.
“Offer a drink?” she dryly asked an almost amused smirk flitted across her lips. “Well, you seem to be the most interesting pony here. So, I decided to try my luck.” That wasn’t what I was asking about at all and the annoying creature before me knew it.
“Oh, and what about me is interesting?” I asked as I moved closer to the Unicorn who was propositioning me. “And depending on how you answer I can then I can tell you if you are indeed lucky.” She chuckled at my words as her cyan eyes flashed with amusement at my antics. Oh well then hello Ms. mystery. I do believe that you have caught my attention, just like I caught yours.
“Well for one you seem far more interested in watching the ponies in here than anything else. It is almost as if you had a different desire than all the others who came here looking for release.” Her voice somehow managed to sound accusatory while at the same time intrigued. Almost as if I was a wrapped gift that she was attempting to guess what I had hidden. It was adorable. However, I had far more secrets than any sort of gift that this pony would receive. If she continued to play her cards right, she may get me as a gift herself.
“I like to watch ponies.” I easily admitted. “Seeing how every pony else makes it through their day, each with their own struggles and vices.” My conversation mate rolled her eyes at my final word. “Oh? Is this not the place to share in another’s sin? Or perhaps is that not the reason why you sought me out?” I couldn’t exactly cheat without being able to feel her heart, but I was still the Alicorn of Love. I smiled and pressed against her side. I knew that I had taken the initiative in this little mating ritual.
“Well then you are forward.” She said with a smile. “You can call me Sunset.” She introduced herself with an almost mocking bow. “If it is all the same with you before we engage in this sin that you speak of, I would have to insist that you join me in a private room so that we may get to know each other a little better.” An intriguing offer from an interesting pony, nonetheless. Especially for one that shared a name with the owner of the Forlorn Mare.
“Well then Sunset, do lead on.” I said with a small laugh. She really was trying to get me all alone so quickly and yet she called me forward. Perhaps this night wasn’t ruined after all. Sunset nodded after a moment’s pause before taking my hoof in hers as she began to pull me through the crowd of dancing ponies.
It took us about two minutes to reach one of the rooms where Sunset proceeded to pull a key from her cloak, unlocking the door and pulling it open. I didn't mind the wasted time as I knew what was likely to happen within this room. A keen pressure began to build in anticipation that only heightened as the door shut behind me. Silencing the sounds from outside of the room.
Now I could only hear the sounds I was making, as Sunset was still somehow silently moving. Her hoofs made no discernable noise to my ears, even as I saw them treading upon the ground. “Well then, this room is fancy I can’t even hear the music. Does the effect go both ways?” I asked Sunset who made her way towards the table that was at the center of the room. She nodded as she pulled out a seat. Good. “I can only wonder what sort of noises I will be making to need such a charm.” I cooed as I slid into the chair, which had plenty of room for my wings.
“Technically it is a ward, but that is beside the point entirely.” Sunset muttered out as she rolled her eyes. I knew I was playing at being a Pegasus once more, but I was still an Alicorn I knew what a ward was. “Well then why don’t we start with what your name is?” She questioned as she moved over to a collection of bottles before grabbing one with her magic which was a searing red.
“You can call me Cadance.” I gave her the name of a pony who no longer existed. One who had been forced to become something more than she ever could be. A pony who I no longer was. Some pony who I was now only pretending to be.
“Cadance, a unique name for such a unique pony like yourself.” Sunset spoke with constant flattery as easily as she breathed. Bringing over the chosen glass that I could now see had no label upon it. Nothing to mark what the liquid shimmering crimson liquid within it was, it looked oddly like blood. “Tell me Cadance, have you heard the stories of old? Where before there was Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, and Celestia, there were other immortals?” She questioned as she sadly sat at the other end of the table from me.
She didn’t give Celestia her title as Princess, yet she gave me mine. Interesting, perhaps Sunset was close to Celestia? I didn’t recognize her and with a mare that looked as she did, I knew that I wouldn’t have forgotten her. She was rather memorable in all the right ways.
“Do you mean monsters like Discord?” I asked as I leaned forwards resting my head on my hooves as I intently stared at Sunset. Enjoying the way that her eyes lit up with approval. She held an almost ethereal feeling of familiarity that clung to her, I felt as if I had felt it before, yet I couldn’t yet place it.
“I do indeed mean creatures such as Discord.” She said with a smile as her horn burned with a furious red haze as two shot glasses appeared before us. “Running through the veins of each immortal is a substance known as Ichor.” She punctuated her words with the opening of the bottle. As the red liquid now identified as Ichor shone, I internally frowned. Where did she get access to an immortal’s blood?
“How did you manage to get so much of it?” I questioned with a curious keenness as I stared as if I were enthralled with the bottle. Instead, I was attempting to recall the immortals that I knew. There was myself, Discord, and technically Chrysalis, but I believed hers was simply a form of agelessness. I wished I could have added another pony’s name to that list, but Celestia had done the impossible to save us all from Nightmare Moon.
I could feel Cadance slipping away as I realized that if the owner of the Forlorn Mare had access to Ichor, that Princess Mi Amore Cadenza was needed. After all, almost no pony had access to the very blood that ran through my veins. Much less left it in bottles that were meant to be used to drink from… “Wait are you… Oh Sweet Celestia.” I couldn’t help but dumbfoundedly let out the declaration as I quickly figured out what she was intending to do.
“Maybe I can show you later where I got it.” She said while smiling as she poured the Ichor into both glasses. The liquid was all but glowing as it was transferred from the decanter into the shot glass. Both of which were moved before each of us to easily grab and imbibe.
She must have seen my hesitancy to grab the drink as she continued. “It is safe to drink; it has been diluted from the pure form that runs through immortal veins.” I would surely hope that it was diluted. I would be very concerned if it wasn't, and I was still concerned with how any of it was managed to be acquired. “- I like to call it ambrosia.” She concluded as she grabbed the glass in front of her and swiftly swallowed it with a single gulp.
I was at her side immediately. Prepared to break through my disguise and reveal myself as an Alicorn were she about to begin to internally combust from drinking something that a mortal should not have touched. Thankfully, however, even as I ran my wings over her cloak she didn't seem to be in pain. “I must be better than I thought if you are that concerned for me even after we just met.” Sunset laughed out.
Blushing I began to pull my wings back only for her hoof to rest on them. “I didn’t tell you to stop. It feels good to have some pony acting with such concern for me.” Her words brought a flame to my cheeks. Even after she had nearly caused me to reveal who I was, she had brought back Cadance to the forefront. I felt her lips crash into mine as she leaned into me.
Her lips tasted of an almost smoky sweetness that I couldn’t ascribe to anything before I had tasted them on Sunset’s lips. I could feel the heat that had been growing this entire time flowering as I pressed myself into Sunset. Her tongue slipped through my lips, brushing against my teeth. I opened my mouth and allowed our two tongues to battle.
I felt a pressure growing as we drank from each other. Sunset greedily consumed as I gave her more and more. Allowing her to sate her hunger on me. While I gave and gave. Enjoying as she explored my mouth with a gusto that showed her intentions even without her heart relaying them for me.
She pulled away and I couldn’t help the whine that slipped from my still open lips. Even as she licked her own to ensure that she had fully consumed my taste. I couldn’t help the pout that I knew was on my lips. “We wouldn’t want to get to the main event too early now, would we?” She teasingly questioned; her eyes filled with desire that I knew that would be unleashed upon me. I could only tremble in anticipation of such an event.
“Well if that is the main event, what is this then?” I huskily breathed as I leaned back in, filling her vision so that she could only see me within her eyes. Gingerly I brushed my muzzle against hers as our two faces brushed against each other. I could feel her tense in anticipation, but I never did anything more.
“This is you being a tease.” She tensely breathed out onto me. I cruelly smiled as I turned around on my frog, hearing a pained whine from Sunset as I left her. Making my way quickly back to my seat.
“This is me being a tease.” I purred as I made myself comfortable once more. The pulsing ambrosia is still before me. Sniffing at it revealed nothing more than the smell of sweet fruits. Meeting Sunset’s cyan eyes once more I could see the desire for her to leap from her chair to join me on mine. Sadly, she didn’t do so. After a few moments of waiting, I smiled at her before partaking in my own drink.
Pure bliss flooded my mouth from the moment that the diluted divine Ichor passed my lips. It smoothly washed over my tongue as I enjoyed its silky texture. Before I took the entire glass and swallowed it whole. Instantly the bliss that had blossomed was joined by a flood of its fellows as an unparalleled warmth filled my very being.
“What did you think?” Sunset questioned from the other side of the table. Which was in my opinion too far away from me.
“It tasted divine.” I couldn’t hide the amusement that my answer brought me as I chuckled out my words. Sunset seemed just as amused at my antics as I was.
“Good.” She spoke at the same time she filled up only her shot glass with the ambrosia before she and her glass began to make their way over to my side of the table. I could both hear and feel my heart begin to beat faster in a freefall of desire.
She pushed herself into me as I felt her warmth through her cloak. “You aren’t going to get away from me this time.” Her words were whispers that I avariciously coveted.
“Oh, and how exactly are you going to stop me from escaping this time?” I defiantly taunted the pony who was getting ready to pounce on me and ravish me until I couldn’t move. I could see it as clear as day in her cyan orbs. The way that I heard an almost feral growl that put manticores to shame sent shivers down my spine.
“Perhaps I could do this?” She declared as she took the shot and forcefully connected our lips. I could taste her smoky, yet sweet taste covered in the alcohol that spilled from her mouth into mine. Sunset’s tongue quickly found its way to mine as we both once more battled for dominance through our tongues. This time I didn’t give in to the onslaught but instead properly returned the attention that I was receiving.
The ambrosia all but acted as an aphrodisiac at this moment, and for all I knew it was one, as we fell ever further into the others’ grasp. Sunset was all but pushing me out of the chair as she attempted to have our bodies become one. We continued the battle for dominance until the ambrosia was no longer flowing between our two mouths. When we finally were forced to separate, we both were panting. Yet that didn’t do anything to dampen the flame that had been struck.
She stripped her of her cloak allowing her heart to be freed and sing its symphonies to me. Anticipation was freely strung throughout its rapid poundings as she gazed ravenously at me. Her cyan eyes feasting on my form, as she stepped forwards once more. Her smoky lips found purchase upon my own.
We fell into each other, our two hearts intermingling as our bodies did. Two shadows once separated by the dim lights converged into one. Fueled by a boundless passion that refused to extinguish. We continued to consume of the other. The only time we were ever separated was when Sunset forcefully broke our connection to ask if she could teleport us to her room. I swiftly whined my consent as I quickly reforged the connection of our lips.
Even as I sank into the shared pleasure, I never could completely lose the faint trickling of sand that continued to trickle down throughout the night we spent together. The hours passed as the pleasures mounted, as we mounted each other. Until eventually we both were brought to the realm of dreams. The last sight that I could see was Sunset’s radiant smile as she fell asleep within my embrace.
…
…
…
Yawning as I opened my eyes. Innately feeling a missing connection and considering I couldn’t feel the warmth of the pony I had gone to bed with last night, I quickly figured out what was missing. Sighing as I rubbed at my still closed eyes. Even if I knew that this wasn’t uncommon, it still stung. After falling asleep in each other’s grasp… Well, a mare could hope to wake up in her lover’s hooves.
Seven hours and 13 minutes remained of my freedom. Little over seven hours remained where I could still be Cadance once more. Groaning as I forced my eyes open, revealing a room that was sparsely decorated. Instead, it was filled with shelves adorned with scrolls and tomes.
Well then, I guess Sunset was an avid reader. Ignoring the slight pain that flared across my body as I stumbled out of bed, Pegasi healed much slower than Alicorns, and made my way over to the shelves. Looking through them I could find little correlation between the various subjects that were filling the shelves.
Ranging from alchemical histories to speculative insights into time travel. Not only were there written works that explored various fields of magic but there were numerous books about ruling over ponies. We shared a decent deal of literature it seemed. There were works that I recognized from within my own personal library. Ones that were exorbitantly expensive, however Sunset was likely well connected through the ponies that visited the Forlorn Mare. I could hear the faint popping of a teleportation spell and a familiar sounding heart. One that was filled with pleasure and satisfaction.
A torrent of pride burst through my veins as I knew that I was the reason such feelings were in the pony’s heart. After all I was the one that had spent the hours of last night being ravished and then returning the favor. I may have currently been a Pegasus, but I still had the stamina of an Alicorn. It seemed that Sunset did as well, allowing the two of us to keep going past when a normal pony should have been tuckered out.
I heard her hoof steps growing louder just as easily as I heard the susurrations of her heart grow erratic. I took a step back from her shelves and eagerly awaited the opening of the door. Sunset froze as she realized I was not in her bed, yet as her cyan eyes found mine once more the panic fled, replaced by an almost fantastic delight.
“You know it isn't proper form for you to leave a mare alone in your bed without at least a note.” I tutted as I made my way over to the pony that had yet to enter her own room, still standing frozen in her doorway. Chuckling, I made my way over and claimed her lips as my own. This time as I took the initiative, I could see the moment that Sunset began to melt into my kiss.
“I thought I would have some more time before you woke, especially after everything that I did to you last night.” She muttered into my lips. I couldn't help the blush that those words brought to my cheeks. Pulling away after a moment and allowing my own blush to fade, Sunset continued. “Would you like me to get some breakfast together?” I happily chirped out my acceptance which brought another smile to the forefront of Sunset’s face.
I followed her as she led me through the hallway towards a small kitchen area where I could see already on the stove a skillet filled with various herbs and spices. I however couldn't hear it. Before I could even question my partner, she ushered me over towards the table in another room. Following her demands, as I shook my head in amusement, I sat myself at one of the two seats and let my gaze wander.
There wasn't much in this room. Nothing beyond simple chairs and a table. Nothing represented the pony that was currently cooking me breakfast. Smiling as I glanced out of the window, I noted that I could see my castle in the distance. Whistling out appreciatively as I realized just how far we had likely teleported last night to properly begin our spree of passion.
“Did something catch your fancy?” Sunset questioned as she poked her head in to check on me.
“Just realized how far you teleported us last night.” I replied as I gave her a smile. “It's impressive.” Sunset just chuckled as she pulled her head back.
“If you think that’s impressive you should see what else I can do.” She teased from the kitchen.
“Oh? Showing off now, are we?” I commented as she levitated two plates into the room. Sunset just shot me a grin as she nodded. “Thank you for the food, Sunset.” I thanked my host as I began to dig into the vegetable patty.
“Your welcome Cadance.” Sunset said as she began to eat her own portion of the food. Allowing the two of us to bask in the gentle noises of eating. Until both of our plates were cleared. “So should I bring you some place or…” She trailed off, her town unsure but her intent clearly written upon her heart. Seems that I wasn’t the only one who wanted to have another go.
“Luckily enough, I still have some time left that we can spend together.” I said with a smile as I took the initiative once more. Sunset hastily levitated the dishes back to the kitchen as I found myself on my partner. As we began to revisit how we started last night’s rather pleasurable events. That was, however, until the chair that we were on began to creak.
“Perhaps we should go back to my room?” Sunset breathed out in between the kisses that she was peppering me with.
“Lead on.” I whispered as I all but sank my teeth into her neck. Claiming her once more, for the next few hours. With the help of her telekinesis, which I did not point out, she brought me back to her bedroom where we fell together onto her bed. Once more we fell into each other's cloying embrace.
…
When the remaining grains of sand equaled an hour, I brought our activities to an end. To both Sunset’s evident disappointment and my own. “I’m sorry but if we start again well…” I trailed off with a smile as we both knew that we would be far too busy with one another. Sunset just grumbles even as the various summoned chains, whips, and other tools of pleasure we had been using, began to fade away to wherever Sunset had summoned them from.
“Unfortunately, while I would like to disagree with your assessment, I should probably get back to work myself. I am planning a rather large acquisition. To happen in the next two weeks” Sunset muttered as her eyes roamed all her hard work that she had done on me. I could only smile as I straightened and allowed her gaze to all but molest me. I couldn’t help but shiver in delight under her oppressive gaze that seemed to pierce my very soul.
“Maybe we could do the same thing next month?” I questioned Sunset who stiffened at my words. “If not that’s alright… I just wanted to extend the offer.” Sunset immediately frowned as she rapidly shook her head in the negative.
“No, I would love to. It’s just, well, next month may be rather hectic for me.” She paused, her gaze once more finding my own. I could feel her heart pounding with the barely concealed desire that still burned for me. “I will make time.” She declared with a nod.
“Well, I will be sure to clear time in my schedule for you as well.” I couldn’t help but cheekily retort. Even if it was the truth. She didn’t know that. Quickly we hashed out a day that would work for the both of us to have a repeat performance in about three weeks. “Perfect, shall we meet up in the Forlorn Mare?” At my question Sunset snorted. “What?” I questioned my clearly amused bedmate.
“Nothing, it’s just amusing.” She said with a wave of her hoof. I just looked at her until she explained what was so amusing. “Why do you think I sought you out last night?” Sunset for some reason asked. I just looked at her in confusion for a moment before I realized that she was serious.
“Well, I had thought it had something to do with me being you type?” I couldn’t help but point out for Sunset’s evident amusement at my statement.
“I had you checked out Cadance.” At her words a creeping fear slithered its way into my heart. She had me checked out? Does that mean she knows? I could feel my horn ready to reform at my command so that, if need be, I could draw upon the entire strength I had at my disposal as the Alicorn of Love. “Yet I found nothing. No pony knows anything about you and with the Princesses recent interest in my business, I figured it would be a good idea to check out who was the pony that no one seemed to know myself.” Wait. Wait one moment. My business?
“You own the Forlorn Mare?” I asked as I stared wide-eyed with the confusion I now felt. Wait, did she not know that I was Mi Amore Cadenza? How? Seeing her nod, I continued. “Wait, you thought I worked for the princess, but you still slept with me?” Princess Mi Amore Cadenza would have to deal with that revelation, Cadance was running out of time, and she needed answers.
“Well, I knew that you didn’t work with the princess after I showed you the ambrosia.” She calmly stated with a shrug. “After all, your reaction instead of attempting to arrest me for having and imbibing an extremely illegal substance was one of concern for my health.” She continues explaining her train of thoughts. Not even realizing the chaos that she had left me in.
“I don’t even know how to react to this.” I really didn’t. This recontextualizes quite a bit of last night. So, Sunset thought that I was a guard that had slipped inside and was trying to find dirt on her establishment to arrest her? Sunset just winced at my words as she pushed herself off the bed.
“Sorry, but I figured if we were going to see each other again we should clear the air between us.” As she spoke her horn once more burned with red flames as she summoned a familiar bottle. Nearly identical to the one that we had killed last night. This one, however, was filled and had yet to be opened. “A token of my apologies.” Sunset said with an amused tilt to her voice.
“Do you really think that this is enough to show how sorry you are?” I asked, trying not to think of how much of a hypocrite I was at this moment of time. She had thought I was a guard, but in reality I was instead Princess Mi Amore Cadenza herself, and I had no idea how to tell her without ruining what I had found with her last night. It was magical. I knew it was selfish but why would Cadance have to give up this pleasure just so Princess Mi Amore Cadenza wouldn’t feel like a hypocrite.
“Well considering how much you enjoyed drinking it from my mouth. I had assumed that -.”
“Alright I forgive you!” I quickly cut Sunset off as I smothered her face with my wings to hide my embarrassment. Well then and here I thought I didn't have anything left to be embarrassed by other than my failures, apparently, I was wrong in that assessment. “Alright I’ll see you next month.” I said as I quickly grabbed the bottle before giving her a quick parting peck on the lips.
“Perhaps I’ll show you how I make it?” I heard Sunset offer as I fled her house. Finding myself on the streets of Canterlot once more, I felt the final grains of sand continuing to be lost. Pushing through the crowd until I was in a secluded alley, I stepped forwards into nothingness disappearing. Cadance the Pegasus was once more replaced by Mi Amore Cadenza reigning Princess of Equestria and Alicorn of Love.
I would have to figure out what these revelations meant later. For now, however, I placed my gifted ambrosia into a personal chest for later, and quickly undid the wards upon my room. Giving one more longing glance at the final grains of sand that fell to the bottom of the time piece. I exited my room and nodded at the guards who had valiantly stood watch over a room that they certainly knew was empty.
I heard my name being shouted as I grimaced. It was always one thing after another. One more fire I had to put out. Perhaps when I get a moment of respite, I will be able to figure out what I should do with everything that I had learned about Sunset. That, however, was for later. For now, it looked as if Discord had once more popped out whatever pit he had been hiding in this time.
…
…
…
Eventually the chaotic tidings had lessened after Discord had once more fled. I had a rare moment of peace after nearly a week and a half of ensuring that Equestria wouldn’t fall to oblivion once more. I had spent this time staring at the bottle of ambrosia I had been gifted. Considering the pony that had given it to me.
Attempting to reconcile the various emotions that fluttered through my heart whenever I thought of the time we had spent together. Sunset was the pony that had not left the background of my mind even throughout the various incidents that had taken priority over thinking of her. I had no idea what the correct steps were to take. I wished Celestia was still here so I could ask her what I should do. I had lied to her about who I was, and I could use her gift to me to end her. After all, that wasn't my initial plan when I went into the Forlorn Mare myself.
Even if right now she wasn’t doing anything too bad, I would eventually have to crack down on her. But until then I could at least pretend for the moment? That I wasn’t Mi Amore Cadenza and that I didn’t have the responsibilities of every pony within Equestria. That I was just Cadance and that I had just found an interesting pony. One that shared an interest in myself as I did her.
“When did my life become so complicated?” I couldn’t help but mutter as I looked up at the Sun. Hearing a blast echo through the castle as I shook my head with a sigh as I placed the ambrosia back in the chest, locking it with a thought, and teleporting to see who the newest threat to my country was.
My guards were huddled within various rings of flames that thankfully did not appear to have too badly harmed any pony yet. Finding the newest assailant that sought to rule Equestria. It was a pony enwreathed within flames; Blazing Shimmer it seems, had finally popped up. This time instead of Manehatten or even the burned city of Appleloosa, she arrived before me at the seat of my power.
Instantly the most recent fire began to dive into what was likely a well-rehearsed and scripted speech but in truth I couldn’t bring myself to listen. Instead, I spent my time dissecting the magic that ran across it. Thanks to chance or perhaps even Celestia’s ghost I impossibly saw underneath the coiling flames a coat covering a seemingly familiar amber coat. I continued to ignore the speech of the most recent would-be conquer, they all are relatively the same as I had quickly learned. Instead, I attempted to listen to the pony’s heart only to freeze as I could not hear it.
…
…
…
“Why Celestia?” I questioned interrupting the tirade that I hadn’t been listening to as I looked once more at the Sun high above. The coat I could dismiss, the cloak wasn’t even worth contemplating, but being unable to hear her heart… Unfortunately for me Sunset decided that I should continue to listen to her speech.
“You have heard my demands so called Princess of Love. Tell me, will you be stepping down from your throne?” Sunset demanded from me, unrealizing that she was making demands of the very pony she had dominated but a few nights ago. “Or shall we see which one of us is far better suited to rule Equestria?” At her words two wings billowed out of her sides. Enshrouded entirely beneath the protective flames.
…
That at least explains where she got the ichor. But she was an Alicorn this entire time as well? I needed some time to think, and I could see Sunset moving towards me. Reflexively I attempted to give myself more time to solve this impossible puzzle I had been given.
“Give me a moment to think please Sunset! I don’t even know how to react to this!” I realized my mistake immediately after the words had left my mouth. The turn of phrase that I had used so recently with her once more spilled out. For a singular moment that dragged on, Sunset froze. Perhaps she wouldn’t catch my mistake?
“Cadance?” I heard her confusion clearly beneath the hissing of her flames which fell in temperature and intensity as she was no doubt attempting to figure out what was happening herself. “I know no pony by the name of Sunset! I am Blazing Shimmer!” She shouted to throw me off her own mistake. “And I am here-.”
“Can we please not Sunset? This conversation is already going to suck enough.” I cut her off once more. Dreading what was sure to ensue, as before me stood a potential conqueror of Equestria and the most recent mare that I had slept with.
Author's Note
I have fallen in love with this paring at this point. Especially with all the ways you can twist Cadance's and Sunset's relationship. Especially since they both have such an interesting relationship with Celestia herself. You see that in this story as it ironically is a reverse of my other written tale. This time it is Cadance that is following in Celestia's footsteps as she laments not being a good enough replacement. Having the psychotic breakdowns and unintentionally harms ponies around her. While Sunset is calling Celestia by her name and acting relatively emotionally mature. Even if she is trying her hoof at global domination. No one is perfect after all.
