It was a rather gloomy evening. The horizon was covered in a thick white mist, and the sky was overcast. Everything was so drab and bland. In the middle of the forest near the lake, a mare sat looking sad and pathetic, as if something heavy was weighing on her soul. Her name was Misty Brightdawn.
Misty looked down at her own reflection in the water. In front of her was the image of a very distressed and injured mare. Her purple-green mane was all messed up. She noticed red fluid oozing from her forehead and nose. There were heavy bags and stains of her own tears under her eyes.
She touched her nose with a hoof and inhaled deeply. She could smell the faint scent of blood. She knew she should have it tended to, but for now - she would rather do nothing. A fresh batch of tears began to roll down her cheeks - a gift of broken heart, for sure.
In a way, it was all funny to her. She was now in her favorite place - a secluded lake in the middle of the forest.
Here she could be away from Opaline, her desire to rule the ponykind. She could be alone with her hopes and dreams. When she was a child, she used to let her imagination run wild here. But that was when she was a child - long before magic returned and long before Opaline ordered her to get that damned dragon!
Suddenly she felt angry and struck the water with her hoof, shattering her own reflection. And then silence, except for a few owls and insects that were out in the night. She sat there for a while now - oh yes, that dragon! - she remembered.
Feelings of remorse, guilt and disgust for herself began to wash over her. How could she have let this happen? She went there afterwards and... the sight was gruesome to say the least.
She had a chance to change her life and be with her new friends and she let them down, herself, that poor baby dragon! Hitch did a good thing when he hit her with his hoof! She deserved it! DESERVED! And now all she could do was run away, lie down and cry. And she cried like never before.
She did this all her life. She would run to her room and cry when Opaline called her names or hit her or worse. It took her a long time to realise it was wrong. Until she met Izzy. She showed her kindness and friendship. And now, thanks to her, it was over!
And in the end, she deserved it all, didn't she?
"All I had to do was free my friends and help them free the dragon..." She choked on her own tears. She was pathetic. All she wanted now was to stop existing. M-Maybe she could throw herself into the lake or find a sharp rock. She tried to just stop breathing, but it didn't work very well, she just lost consciousness for a moment.
Misty concentrated on the water again. She loved water, always had. It was always there when she needed to process all the mean things Opaline had said to her, when she needed to be alone or just to relax. Maybe, just maybe, it could help her one last time.
But was it the right decision? She made a mess of things and now she just wanted to run away from the mess she made. But what can she do now? Her friends hate her now and will never forgive her, Opaline has thrown her away after she found out that she wanted to help them in the first place and that dragon... Surely nothing, not even magic, can bring back the dead. Oh! This whole situation is such a mess!
She was surprised that Opaline did not kill her, sure, she was angry, but she expected more. She remembered how she had accidentally destroyed that strange mirror when she had ordered her to clean a cellar. She remembered wishing she was in Tartarus that day. Her punishment had been so severe. But instead, she just let her go?
Well, Opaline was smart, and she probably knew well that Misty would not be able to live in Maretime Bay, or anywhere else for that matter. Sheriff Hitch promised her that if she ever showed her face in town, she would wish she had never been born. So that was not an option for her. Pipp and Zipp must have told Queen about what happened at the castle, so unless she wanted to be prosecuted, that was out, and Izzy probably did the same in Bridlewood.
She had nowhere to go and no one. She was alone and her only companions were feelings of guilt and disgust at herself. She just wanted to be happy, without Opaline beating her up for every mistake she made, without her plans for domination. Why had she never thought of that before?
All her life she had never made a decision, and when she had, everything had gone to wrong! But maybe, just maybe, she could make a choice of her own that could bring some good...
And maybe she will...
After all, she has nothing left...
And she would never have to worry about anything again...
Maybe it was a good decision after all...
It was not as if she had anything left to lose...
And so she decided.
She stood up and walked deeper into the lake. She knew a spot that was much deeper than the rest. After a while she could not feel the ground beneath her hooves. She held her breath. For once she made a decision without Opaline. And for once, something good will came of it. After a while, she lost consciousness and her body fell into the depths of the water, never to rise again. She had finally made a decision that was her own. And Misty was no more.
