Belial: Luna's Assistantby anarkitty8ChaptersBeautiful NightEternal NightReturnBeautiful Night“We are ruled by two princesses,” the teacher's sweet voice said as she started her lesson. “Princess Celestia brings about the sun while her sister brings the night time.” “Why do we need night time? It's so annoying, I wish we just had the sun,” a young boy in front of Belial asked. “If we didn't have the night, then you wouldn't have the energy to have fun during the day!” the teacher replied enthusiastically, although the class just groaned in response. “Anyways, she makes the rules and protects us from other kingdoms, although we haven't had any conflict in over a hundred years. Princess Celestia is the most generous person in our kingdom.” “Hey, we're going to pick berries in the forest after school, why don't you come with us?” a young girl with purple hair asked Belial. “Come on Dusk, they're too gloomy to join us,” the boy who sat in front of her asked. “Oh come on now, don't be like that!” “No, they're right. I don't really wish to go anyways,” Belial replied, forcing a small smile. “Alright, if you insist.” Dusk walked away back towards her friends, leaving Belial to herself. While the rest of the others left for recess, she stayed behind to nap. She dreamt of a calm and quiet forest, away from the noise of the other kids. She slept well until the closing of the door pulled her attention back to the class, a few of the kids snickering at her. The teacher quickly took back to her lesson, Belial taking the opportunity to go back to her sleep, but unfortunately the dream didn't come back. The next thing she knew, the bell rang and school was let out for the day. She quickly grabbed her things and left the school, making her way through the plaza where parents were walking with their kids. She made her way down to the edge of the small town and opened the door to her small rundown house. “Mom, Dad, I'm home.” She chuckled, “Oh who am I kidding, you aren't coming back.” She threw her bag near the door and opened the fridge to pull out the meager food she was able to get from the food drive the day before. She placed a microwave meal into her broken microwave and set the timer a few minutes past what the package advised, knowing it would take longer to heat up. A few minutes later, she had eaten the meal and returned to the couch, falling asleep quickly. She found herself waking up just as the sun had set, moonlight sneaking in through the boarded up windows. “I really need to stop sleeping in the day,” she muttered to herself. She got up and rubbed her eyes before getting up and washing herself off with a bucket in the bathroom, changing into her clothes for the next day. She stepped out into the night for the first time she could remember. The night was cool and the town was completely silent with only the nocturnal animals making sounds. She looked up at the stars as she sat down on the fountain in awe at the beauty, and how it was all hers. “It's beautiful, isn't it?” a voice from behind her say. There was a woman with long dark hair, black wings and a purple and blue dress who took a seat next to Belial. She wore a crown on her head with a lone sapphire. Belial quickly realized who this was and bowed to her. “My princess, I'm sorry I didn't notice you before. Are you the one who brings night?” The princess's face turned sour for a split second before composing, “Yes I am. I am Princess Luna, but I assume that the schools didn't teach you that, right?” “No they didn't. They only taught us about Princess Celestia. Your night is beautiful, though. It's so calm with no noise.” Princess Luna motioned for Belial to sit. “Thank you. Not many people are awake to see the beauty, so may I ask why you are?” “I slept too much in the day, so I decided to take a walk outside.” The princess laughed at that. “I never knew someone who would sleep during the day. How are you liking the night?” “I prefer it to the day. The day is too noisy, hurts my head and it makes me too sleepy. I'd rather just stay awake during the night.” “Interesting. Would you mind if I met your parents? I have something I want to ask them.” Belial looked down to the stone path. “I don't have any. They left me when I was super young, so I was always on my own.” The princess placed a kind hand on Belial's shoulder. “How about coming to live in the castle as my assistant?” “Really? Why me, though, I'm so gloomy and weird.” “You're the first person to see the appeal of the night. While you aren't the first to find themselves awake at night, you're the first to truly appreciate my work.” Belial thought about the offer for a moment. “I'd love to be your assistant, my princess.” “Who is this, sister?” a shorter woman with short blonde hair that shone like sun with white wings asked as Belial and Luna entered the castle at the edge of the city. Belial found herself rooted to the spot as she realized that this woman was Princess Celestia. “This is my new assistant, Belial. She saw the beauty in my night, so I decided to reward her.” “I'm happy for you,” Celestia said, a genuine smile on her face. “It's nice to meet you, Belial. Once everything is finalized, I'll let you meet our other assistants.” “Thank you, Princess Celestia,” Belial replied. “Come on, we need to have you officially join. Follow me to the throne room,” Luna said. Belial said goodbye to the other princess, and followed Luna down the long hall past several side hallways until they came across a large set of doors. Luna waved her hand, purple energy swirling around it and engulfing the door, causing it to open into a large throne room. There were two thrones, one white and orange with gold accents, while the other was black and blue. Luna took a seat on the black and blue thrown and motioned for Belial to step forward. “Get down on one knee and I will swear you in as my personal assistant,” she said. Belial obliged, dropping to one knee and looking into the princess's eyes. “Belial, I will bestow upon you the rank of assistant and the power of night, do you accept this?” she asked, her hand glowing. “I do.” Once she said those words, a cold but comforting feeling swept through her as the princess's magic engulfed her body. A blue tri-phase moon appeared on her left hand as her clothes changed into a black pleated skirt and shirt with blue accents. Two black bracelets with a blue line down the middle appeared on her wrists. She could feel what felt like wings spread from her back. She brought them in front of her to see that they were the same dark colour of princess Luna's. “You are now my first and only assistant. Just like us, you will not require as much sleep as you did before. Tomorrow morning you will meet with the other assistants, but for now, follow me to your quarters.” “This is your room. The door to your left leads directly to mine, as they are connected,” Luna explained. Belial walked into the room in awe at its extravagance. There was a large bed underneath a window with a table and dresser, all painted blue or grey. “Your clothes will automatically be cleaned every morning, so no need to worry about that. If I need you, you will feel your bracelet vibrate, so keep that in mind. Not all assistants serve us directly, however. The ones in grey are the cleaners who take care of the castle, so don't be rude to them. The ones in white and gold are my sister's personal assistants.” “Thank you. I'll do my best for you, my princess.” Luna smiled before opening the door. “Have a good night Belial.” Belial awoke the next morning under the covers of her new bed. On her dresser was another set of clothes she assumed was her uniform. She got up, made her bed, then changed into the clothes brought in. There was a knock at the door leading to Princess Luna's room. Belial opened the door to the princess standing in front of her. “If you're ready, follow me to meet the other assistants. You'll be able to eat breakfast with them as well,” she said. “I don't really eat much, but thank you.” The pair left the room and traveled the halls, others in grey moving away as the princess passed, staring at Belial with bewilderment. They soon found themselves in a small cafeteria with around dozen people in gold and white uniforms. “This is where we eat. You don't have to eat, but I do want you to talk to the other assistants, so go ahead and sit at the table. I'll call for you in an hour.” Belial looked to the long table where the other assistants were staring at her. “There's a free seat over here,” a woman with short pink hair said, motioning to the seat next to her. She carried a sword on her hip, the sheath the same design as her uniform. “I think you're the first assistant that Luna's taken. What's your name?” another person with medium length brown hair asked. “I'm Belial,” she said softly. “I'm Rose. Why did she take you in?” the woman with pink hair asked again. Belial began slowly explaining what happened the day before. The others listened as she spoke, the only time anyone had ever listened to Belial. After she finished, they quickly asked more and more questions until her bracelet began to vibrate slightly. “Sorry, Princess Luna is calling, I'll see you all later,” Belial said, standing up before leaving the cafeteria. Even though she wasn't sure of the layout of the castle, she had no issues finding Princess Luna in the large library near the top of the castle. The library was vast with multiple floors of spiraling bookcases. In the center of the room was a selection of tables illuminated by the sun spilling in through the large windows that reached to the roof. “You made it, very good. Sit down, I have some things to teach you,” Luna said. She sat in the middle with a small stack of books next to her. Belial took a seat in front of her. “The first thing is about your very being.” Luna placed a book in front of her. There was a picture of a stylized person wearing the same uniform as her. She began to read the passage in front of her. “Immortality?” Belial said, astonished. “I didn't know I would live forever.” “Only one assistant can be immortal at a time. Since we also live forever, it is useful.” “So I can look at the night forever?” Belial said, ecstatic. “Yes you can. Go ahead and read the rest of the passage.” “So something like this?” Belial asked, hesitantly letting the blue energy surround her hand and the book to make it hover. “Yes, just like that. I want you to grab me this book,” Luna said, handing her a note with the title of a book. “Just focus your mind on the name of that book and call for it.” Belial dropped the book she was levitating to focus on the 'History of Equestria Volume 1' A few seconds later, she had produced a book from the third level. “You're very close, but that's the second volume.” Luna produced the first volume right next to it and set it down on the table. The two of them spent the entire day reading until Princess Celestia entered the library. “Sister, it's time to raise the moon. I'm going to go to sleep afterwards, it's been a few weeks, so you and Belial say goodbye to the other assistants.” “Come on Belial, I'll show you how we switch the time,” Luna said. Belial and Princess Luna waved goodbye to the other assistants as they went home for the day. The only one who stayed behind was Rose. “You aren't leaving, Rose?” Belial asked. “No. I'm like you in the sense that I don't need to sleep much. I am Princess Celestia's first assistant as you are Princess Luna's. I will be going to sleep now, since I haven't slept in a month, though. See you in the morning!” Rose walked back down the hallway out of sight. “Follow me to the garden, there's something I want you to see.” “Aren't we supposed to stay inside or something? Just in case someone comes for help?” Belial asked as he followed Luna outside and to the right. “No one ever comes during the night,” she said, the words harsh. “My sister is adored by everyone in this small kingdom, but I have only had you since I was born. No one appreciates me!” She stomped her foot as they stopped in front of the entrance to a garden. In the middle was a fountain surrounded by beautiful blue and purple flowers. “I'm sorry. This is what I wanted to show you, my personal garden.” “It's beautiful. Are these plants that only bloom at night? They're so beautiful.” “I wish that everyone would be able to see this. If only the people knew what they were missing!” Belial exclaimed as she spun under the moon. Luna's face lit up with an idea. “Why don't we show them, then?” “Princess Luna, may I ask you something? Why does Rose carry a sword?” Belial asked as she drew out the plans for a grand gala to be held at night. “Generally, the Immortal Assistant is trained with a weapon after 10 years of service, but if you can get this gala to happen, I'll train you afterwards when you hit your fourth year.” “Really?” Belial asked excitedly, writing down the plans quicker. “Speaking of which, when's the last time you slept, don't you feel tired?” Luna asked, closing another book of magic. “I think it was the day that you took me in, so almost three years ago now.” Luna's hand appeared over the paper Belial was writing on. “Go to sleep for the day, alright? I'll keep working on this and we can give this to her tomorrow. You need to sleep more, otherwise you'll start getting weak.” Belial sighed and stood up. “I understand, have a good day. I'll go to sleep then eat a little.” “Princess Celestia, today we bring you an idea to bring people together under the moon, The Grand Gala,” Belial said as Celestia sat on her throne. She handed the plans to the princess who carefully read everything. “This is a great idea! I'll go down today and find people to help get ready. Can you all handle sending out some invites to the older members of this kingdom for a week from today?” “Of course sister!” Luna said, beaming. While Princess Celestia went down to the town, Princess Luna and Belial went to a private room to write down the invitations. “So who are we going to address these to? I don't exactly know anyone to ask for.” “Don't worry, I have a list of people, we just need to write out a couple dozen invites. Do you not have anyone in mind, even if you weren't exactly friends?” Belial thought back to the time three years ago during school. “Dusk,” she finally remembered. “She was the only person to reach out to me.” “Then we'll reach out to her as well.” A week later the castle had been fully transformed to accommodate nearly three dozen people. Streamers were wrapped around the pillars with the throne room completely rearranged for the day. There was a small stage behind where the chairs were with tables on the sides filled with food. “All of the preparations are ready, correct?” Princess Luna asked Princess Celestia as she entered the room with her assistants. They had replaced their usual uniforms with suits and simple dresses as had Belial. “Yes, everything is ready and the guests are outside the doors, so we just need to let them in. Rose, Belial, why don't you two open the doors and greet the guests,” Princess Celestia suggested. The two assistants made their way to the front door of the castle. “I think this will be a night to remember,” Rose said before opening the door to nearly three dozen people in extravagant clothing. “We welcome you all to the first Grand Gala of Equestria! Please follow us to the main hall for food and dance!” Belial called out. The crowd quietly followed as they made their way through the stone halls and into the transformed throne room. There were astonished gasps from the guests as the princesses stood on the stage. “We would like to welcome you again to the Grand Gala. This was put together to allow the people of this kingdom to get together and see the spectacle of night!” Luna said. A string quartet came onto the stage and began playing, signaling the start of the gala. “Hey, you're Belial right? I was wondering where you went,” Dusk said. “Hey, you made it! How are you liking the night so far?” “I love it! It's so beautiful, the stars, the moon.” “I'm glad you liked it. Princess Luna and I came up with this idea to have more people appreciate her.” “You both did so well. I was actually thinking about becoming a teacher; do you think that I could talk to Princess Luna about the history of Equestria a little?” “I would be honoured to teach you,” Luna's voice rang out beside Belial. “Princess Luna! The honour is all mine,” Dusk clamoured. “Meet me here after school tomorrow. Me and Belial would love to have you join us.” Dusk smiled and bowed before returning to the gala. “There's so much history in these books!” Dusk gushed over the books that Belial had given her. “I know, right? You'll be one of the best teachers in no time! You only have two more years, right?” “Yep! I'll be taking over soon enough. I'll make sure people never forget Princess Luna's name again.” The door to the library opened. “Thank you, Dusk. Can I take Belial away from you for a second, I have something to give her,” she said. “Of course, princess. I would never dream of saying no.” “Just call me Luna, both of you.” “So what did you want to give me?” Belial asked as the two made their way to the lower levels of the castle. She said nothing, instead opening a wrought iron door into what looked like a forge. On the table was a curved sword, the tip folding back. It was stylized in the same way as her own uniform. The blade looked like a piece of the night itself had been connected to the hilt. “It's beautiful!” Belial picked up the blade, testing its balance. She sheathed it and attached it to her belt. “You're going to need it soon.” Belial gave her a puzzled look. “I'm going to bring eternal night to Equestria. I have all I need to make it happen, and I want you to make sure that no one stops me. One week from now, the stars will align in such a way that I can stop the moon. All I have to do is feed my power to a quartz crystal.” “Why?” “I'm sick and tired of my sister getting all of the praise!” Luna slammed her hand on the table. “She got the credit for the Gala as well. We'll make them see the beauty of night! I'll call for you a week from now to the throne room where you will defend the crystal from Rose.” “Understood, your majesty.” Eternal Night“Wake up Belial, it's time,” Luna said, waking Belial up in her bed. She got up and changed into her uniform before the two made their way to the throne room. The moonlight lit up the whole room, both thrones currently empty. Luna took out the small quartz crystal and filled the stone with night. It began to pulse before letting out a blast of energy. The stone levitated off of the ground at eye level with Belial. “Did it work?” she asked. “Yes. I can feel it, it worked!” “Luna!” Princess Celestia yelled as she threw open the doors. Rose came in running after her. Luna's wings flared alongside her sister's. Luna smirked before flying out the window. “I know why you're doing this, but it isn't worth it! All you're doing is upsetting the balance!” “I know how it feels to be ignored, to be unwanted. If they don't respect Luna, then they will learn to love the gift she gives!” Rose drew her white and gold sword, Belial drawing her own. “I'll break that crystal and stop you two.” “Not gonna happen.” The two rushed at each other, trading blow after blow. A rush of light broke Belial's attention away long enough to get a hit in the back of the head from Rose's hilt. She fell to the ground, Rose running to the crystal to destroy their mission. “No!” Belial screamed, swinging her sword and watching in horror as a wave of darkness hit Rose's throat, blood rushing out. Belial dropped her weapon and rushed over to her. “I'm so sorry! I didn't mean for it to be like this, I just wanted to have people who understood!” “Move away from Rose,” she heard Princess Celestia's voice call out. Her hair had changed to that of a rainbow, cuts and scrapes all over her body. Belial obliged as Celestia moved to heal Rose's throat. A while later, Rose was able to speak again, a white scar over her throat. Princess Celestia and Rose stood up. “Stand up, Belial.” “Where is Luna?” Belial asked, not looking up from the floor. “Stand up, Belial,” she said more assertively this time. Belial stood up slowly without moving her head. “You will be placed in a cell for this until I feel like it is enough. Follow me.” The cells at the bottom of the castle were still nicer than Belial's own home had been. The bed, while simple, was comfortable enough. There was a small desk over in the corner. “Sit down, Belial.” She felt the blanket in her hands as she sat down, Princess Celestia entering the cell as well. “Luna is gone,” she started. Belial's world felt like it was crumbling down, the stones beneath melting into one. “She will be gone for one thousand years until the stars align again. Once I feel like you can be let out, you will have free reign again.” “Where is she?” “She's on the moon.” Belial couldn't stop herself from laughing. “Isn't that poetic? The princess who controls the night gets stuck alone for a thousand years while the person who nearly killed someone gets stuck in a comfy prison!” Tears were beginning to form in Belial's eyes. “Please, let me take her place. She doesn't deserve that loneliness.” “I can't. As much as I want to, I can't bring her back. I acted hastily and punished her too much.” “Is there anything else you want to add, or can I get to serving out my sentence now?” “Rose wanted to say that she's sorry for not helping sooner.” “Have you come here to gloat, Celestia?” Belial spat as the princess entered her field of vision. “You're not sleeping enough, are you? You're sleeping the bare minimum to keep yourself functioning. We both know that's not what Luna would want.” Even though she's correct, Belial wouldn't let her have it, so she just ignored her as usual. “How long has it been, anyway?” “Around 65 years. Rose gave up being my assistant, along with her immortality. I now have no more help, so how about I give you a chance to leave.” “Now you've piqued my interest. ” “I want you to help me around the kingdom. It's growing much faster than I expected with different people from all around the world coming here. I'm not asking you to leave Luna's side, I'm just asking for your help.” “Why do you think I would help you?” “You have nothing left now, not even Dusk.” Belial flinched at the mention of her only friend. “Can we change the topic?” “Does that mean you'll accept?” “I don't have much of a choice.” “What's a 'town hall'?” Belial asked as they found themselves in front of a large building in the center of the city. The town had significantly grown since Belial had last seen it, many buildings having more than one story. “It's where they keep records of who lives here along with any criminals. They also pass laws here,” Celestia explained as they entered the building. The floor was wood along with a trim on the lower part of the walls. The rest of the wall was a brilliant white. They walked forward until they found a large circular table with people sitting around it. “Why are we here, then? It looks like they have everything sorted out themselves.” “There is a small pack of Ursa Minor near the border of this town, so they asked me to come down and see if I had any ideas.” “Belial, you're finally out!” a familiar voice said from behind them. Belial turned around slowly to see Rose entering the room with a child next to her with darker pink hair. Belial tried to say something but was unable to. “You're late Rose. Why did you bring your kid here, we told you that this was for adults!” one of the men sitting at the table admonished her. “Well excuse me for wanting my old friend to see my kid! Besides, I'm not going to leave them alone while there are Ursa Minor on the outskirts of town.” “Which is why we're here correct? We'll move them away from the city while you start constructing walls around the outskirts of the woods,” Celestia stated. “Belial, you will help build the walls while I scare them off.” “Couldn't you just kill them?” another man at the table asked. “It would save us a lot of trouble.” Belial didn't follow the rest of the conversation; she was far too busy trying to not run out of the room that suddenly felt like it was closing around her. “I'm sorry for what I did Rose,” Belial broke the silence as the two used their magic to lift large white stones to begin building a protective wall. “I thought what we were doing was right, I didn't mean to hurt you.” “I understand that. I actually have a proposition for you, though,” Rose turned to look at Belial. “I want you to look after my family. When I gave up my immortality, I still kept my magic. That also means that throughout the generations, my children will get more and more powerful. I want you to keep them safe and teach them to use their powers wisely.” Belial hesitated before asking, “Why do you trust me to do this?” “You're very kind,” Rose smiled. Belial didn't quite believe her, but she said nothing either way. “I'll do my best for you.” Belial woke up for the first and only time this year. It had been nearly 1000 years since she was released from prison in which during that time she took over being a caretaker of Luna's old garden along with teaching the next generation. The world had grown exponentially over time with magic having become more and more common along with some people managing to grow wings. 1000 years. 1000 lonely years. How lonely does Luna feel? It doesn't matter anymore. She doesn't have that much longer to wait. She got up and forced herself to get ready for the class that day. “Today, class, we will be focusing on history!” she announced to a few groans, one of them coming from the youngest in Rose's bloodline, Twilight Sparkle. “Now I know you all are disappointed that we won't be learning about magic, but history is it's own magic!” Belial said with the same enthusiasm she often heard from Dusk when she would watch her teach the young ones. “Why do we need to learn from history? Wouldn't learning about controlling magic be more useful?” Twilight asked. “History is important so that we can learn and better ourselves from our past mistakes. Understanding why things happen can help you to see the signs later down the road, for better or worse. Can anyone tell me about the history of magic in this kingdom?” No one raised their hand. Belial sighed and thought about how much more reading she would have to assign. “1000 years ago, magic was something that only our two princesses had. They were able to give their magic and lifespans to one person of their choosing, and while the lifespan could be taken back, the magic could not.” She paused to look at which students were taking notes and which weren't. “While it was slow, magic slowly began to make its way into daily life, either directly through action, or being around magic. After around 250 years, people started to be born that could utilize magic on their own. When that discovery was made, Princess Celestia added a course about harnessing magic.” Most of the students were writing down what she said, bar a few that she would have to pay extra attention to. “Over the years, people began to become more powerful. Around 200 years ago, the first person to be born with wings came into this world. Once again, Princess Celestia added a course to train people to use their wings safely and take care of them.” “Did Princess Celestia teach you how to fly, Miss Belial?” one of her students asked. “No. I was taught by someone else who was very close to her. Now, enough with the history lesson, it's time to go over last week's homework.” A few people groaned, but made their way to the front to hand in the homework. A couple years later “Belial, Princess Celestia asked for you,” Twilight said as she entered Princess Luna's old garden. Belial placed the shears down and turned to look at Twilight who had a serious expression on her face. Belial groaned, “How high on the scale is it?” “10 out of 10.” Belial used her magic to sink into the darkness of the shadows around her and quickly made her way into Pri- Celestia's throne room. “I'm surprised you're here so quickly,” she said. “As you know, my sister will be coming back on the night of the Grand Gala. She will be searching for the elements of harmony.” “Yes, I'm aware. You also know that I have every intention of helping her when she gets back.” “That's what I wanted to talk about. I want you to help Luna when she gets back here. Twilight is aware of her plans as she read the prophecy, and I want you to watch Twilight and make sure she stays safe.” “What do you mean, stay safe?” “My sister is not in her right mind. She is no longer the Luna you knew. She has been transformed by her hate, quite literally, and became a creature known as nightmare moon.” “And you want me to stop her?” “No. Twilight Sparkle is more than capable of doing that, and she has a great destiny waiting for her. I just want you to make sure that she remains safe. I will be sending the two of you to Ponieville. The library is already set up for you two to live in.” Belial's head was spinning with all of this new information, but before she could say anything, Celestia added, “If you want to save Luna, the real Luna, this is the best thing you can do. She won't hesitate to kill anyone, including anyone in Rose's ancestry.” Belial thought for a moment, “Fine. Anything else you need, Celestia?” “Please don't use your magic. Not only will it cause a massive stir, it's also quite frightening. Also, take this,” she reached behind and pulled out Belial's old sword. She took the sheathed blade into her hands and stared at it. “Are you sure you want me to have this again?” Celestia nodded. Belial placed the sword onto her belt gently. “I have already had your bags packed and placed in a carriage. I will personally watch after the garden as well.” “Just don't touch the chrysanthemums, they-” “-need to be left alone, I am aware. They will be kept in safe hands, I promise.” ReturnPonieville reminded Belial a lot of the old days of Canterlot. The roads were dirt, buildings were made of wood with simple structures with the only impressive art being the fountain in the middle of the square. The two of them exited the white and gold carriage, Belial breathing a sigh of relief as she was finally free of Canterlot. Twilight Sparkle, on the other hand, was not as happy. A pink haired girl walked up to the two of them. Well, more like she skipped with how excited she was. “New friends!” the girl said. “I have to tell the others!” the pink haired girl ran off, leaving dust to spring up. “Well, that was interesting,” Twilight said before pulling out a scroll. “What's that for?” “Princess Celestia wants us to put on a little gala. Didn't she tell you about it?” Belial shook her head. “Never the matter, let's head over to Apple Farms and see how they're getting along with the food preparations.” “It's so dirty,” Twilight complained. “Why can't there at least be a stone path here?” “You know, Canterlot used to look like this as well,” Belial supplied. Twilight began a retort before a tan girl with long blonde hair walked up to them. “Hi there, I'm AppleJack. You're the royal whatevers, right? I'll show you the selection we have for that party.” She took them through the farm, Twilight groaning and mumbling as dirt and mud began caking the hem of her pants. They were brought to a table where a large spread of apple-based sweets were laid out. Twilight began to taste the sweets, dodging questions from Applejack's large family. “Aren't you going to eat some?” Applejack asked Belial. “Sorry, I'm just not used to eating too much. This is a little overwhelming.” She took a fork and tried a little bit of what Applejack called a cinnamon apple pie. “This is really good. Twilight, you should choose this one!” She looked over to see Twilight hanging her head from the abundance of sugar. She gave Applejack the go ahead on the pie before helping Twilight up and out of the farm. Belial sat her down on the fountain in the center of the square. “Alright, so what's next?” Belial asked, starting to get excited. “It says here we have to check in with someone called Rarity about dresses and suits. Did Princess Celestia talk with you about what you were going to be wearing?” “I think a year or two ago she asked me whether I'd be comfortable wearing a suit and I said yes, so maybe? Either way, let's get going, I'm starting to get excited!” “Why are you so excited about this?” “I never had anyone to do these things with when I was younger. Even back then, Canterlot wasn't exactly nice to outcasts.” Twilight stood up and looked back at the map she was given before moving off towards the shop. Belial's enthusiasm, however, was immediately curved as they were confronted by the shop's owner. “Oh, you two are the Princess's advisors, correct? My name is Rarity, pleased to make your acquaintance,” the girl said, her hair a brilliant purple. She spoke in the same accent that many Canterlotians did, although hers was thicker than most. “Yes, we are here to check up on your progress with the dresses and suits.” Rarity laughed with the same haughtiness Belial had heard a thousand times. “Why, of course you are. My work is the finest after all. I have a suit here for Belial, although I wasn't aware she would be carrying such an ugly accessory.” Rarity pointed out the sword, causing Belial's wings to flare up in anger. “What did you just say?” “It's the truth. If you want to look your best, you should ditch that ugly thing.” Twilight stepped in front of Belial before she could get closer. “Why don't you grow a spine and say what you actually mean. I thought I would be able to escape Canterlot, but here you are, just another spineless worm who thinks you're better than everyone else.” Rarity drew back a little. “Belial, go outside. Rarity, I'm so sorry about this,” Twilight began. Belial walked out of the shop, standing near the entrance with her arms crossed. She watched as a few people stared at her as they passed by. The door to the shop opened, and Twilight stepped out with two stacks of clothes for the both of them. “What was that about back there?” she asked. “Nothing. Just tell me what's next on that list of yours.” They spent the rest of the day talking to the weather team which included a hotshot with rainbow hair, along with talking to a softspoken pale girl with light pink hair who was in charge of an animal choir. The very idea got a chuckle out of Belial when she saw that. “So what time is this gala again?” Belial asked as they entered the library to get changed. Any time now, Princess Luna. “Midnight. Where would you like to sleep?” Twilight asked as she set her bags down on the second floor. “I'll be fine.” Suddenly, for the first time in a thousand years, the bracelet on her wrist began to vibrate. “I have to go do something.” She quickly left the library, flapping her wings and finding her way towards Luna. She found her inside the hall for the Gala. “Belial, my faithful servant. I'm happy to know you answered my call,” Princess Luna said, her voice different. “Of course, Princess Luna I-” “I am Nightmare Moon and you will address me as such.” Belial quickly shut her mouth, remembering what Celestia said. “Now, I plan to make my debut again when this 'gala' begins.” “It starts at midnight. So, Nightmare Moon, what are your plans?” Luna- Nightmare Moon smiled, baring her teeth. Belial watched as Nightmare Moon confronted the people of Ponieville. She could see Twilight Sparkle and her new friends' faces as they listened to what she said. Nightmare moon conjured darkness to cover her escape through the balcony. “Come, Belial. I want you to guard me as I try and destroy the Elements of Harmony!” “Yes, my lady.” With a flare of her wings, she followed Nightmare Moon as her body turned to smoke. They flitted through the trees of the Everfree forest until they came across an old temple, half destroyed from nature itself. Inside the temple, there was a pedestal at the end of the room, a large crystal sitting on top of it. “Guard this crystal, Belial. I'm going to set up some obstacles for those little twerps that followed us.” With that said, Belial was left alone in the decrepit old temple. She took a seat on the steps that led up to the platform, pulling her knees up to her chest. “Hurry up Twilight, I want Princess Luna back already.” A while later, the doors flew open as Nightmare Moon was thrown back by purple light. Twilight Sparkle, all alone, entered the temple. “Belial, do your thing!” Nightmare Moon said before starting to pour her magic into the crystal. “Belial? How could you! You're going to destroy everything we love!” Twilight shouted. Belial stood up and placed her hand on her sword. She winced as memories of that night replayed in her head, and for the first time in a thousand years, drew her sword against another. “You're going to need your friends to win, Twilight,” Belial said, trying to give her advice. Please, you can't lose. “My magic is more than enough to win against you!” She conjured a bolt of light at Belial. She swung her sword towards the bolt, cutting it in half with a dark burst of energy. “No you can't, Twilight. You can't win alone!” she pleaded. Twilight just ignored her advice, instead choosing to rocket forward debris. Belial gave a few more half-hearted slashes at her. Then, a blur of rainbow hair ran straight towards her, a fist connecting with her face. She put a hand to her bleeding nose before flying back closer to Nightmare Moon. The weather girl, Rainbow Dash tried to fly in again. Belial rocketed forward and gave a light kick, knocking her down. Soon enough, all of the other friends Twilight made joining her. They stood next to each other, Twilight giving a shocked look towards them. There was a loud cracking sound as Nightmare Moon began cackling, the Elements of Harmony falling on the floor, broken. “See Twilight? I told you that you weren't strong enough to win without your friends!” “We're here now. We will stand beside her no matter the circumstances,” Rarity said. “We'll beat you meanie traitors no matter what it takes!” the pink haired girl from before said. The others gave an enthusiastic cheer. Suddenly, there was a blinding flash of colour as Twilight's friends began to glow in different colours. “No! Belial, stop them!” There was no time to even react as a burst of colour engulfed the two of them. It hurt like no other, causing her to stumble and fall in pain. As she lay on the ground, a flash of pale rainbow hair appeared as Celestia dropped down into the temple. Belial pushed herself up to meet Celestia's gaze. “Did it work?” Celestia smiled, holding out a hand to help her up. “Princess Celestia, what is she talking about?” Twilight asked. A groan escaped from the collapsed form of Luna before she looked up. “Luna, it's been so long,” Celestia said. Tears formed at her eyes as she walked over to her. “I'm so sorry. I got so caught up in anger that I-” Luna's voice choked with sobs. Celestia pulled her into a hug. “I'm so sorry, Belial.” “Seriously, what is happening?” Dash asked. “She's Princes Luna. She was locked away on the moon for a thousand years. She somehow became Nightmare Moon, and the elements of harmony fixed her, I think,” Twilight answered. “So you have been paying attention in class. You're absolutely right, but that's not the whole story. I was there as well and helped her. I got locked away in a cell for 80 or so years before being given a second chance,” Belial offered. She wiped away some stray tears before hugging Princess Luna. “I waited so long, and then you were Nightmare Moon. Please, don't ever do that again.” “I promise I won't.” Belial waved goodbye to the princesses as they flew back to Canterlot to reconnect. “So, you can do magic and you're over a thousand years old,” Rarity started before a twinkle appeared in her eye. “Please tell me about Canterlot!” “I think it would be a better idea to head home. Everfree can be pretty dangerous after all,” the light pink-haired girl said in a quiet voice. “After that, then we can party!” the energetic one said. “We still have a long way to go, though.” “I got this.” Belial drew herself and the others into the shadows under her and led them back to Ponieville through the cold. “So, how are you able to use magic and have wings?” the excited one asked. “Pinkie Pie, let's not dredge up her past. Besides, it's night time. Let's get home first,” Rarity supplied. “Why did you do it?” Twilight said as she entered the balcony. “Everything, I mean. You could've stopped NIghtmare Moon alongside Princess Celestia, so why didn't you?” “Physically, maybe. Neither me nor Celestia would've been able to go through with it. Even if we stopped her, we couldn't save Princess Luna. The only way to do that was with the elements of harmony, which only you and your friends have a connection to.” “So why didn't you tell me about what was going to happen, someone could've gotten hurt!” “Celestia believes you're destined for great things, as do I. You're one of the most powerful mages that I've seen, and you may even be able to rival the princesses one day.” Belial sighed. “Twilight, you are the only person in one thousand years to be able to forge a connection with the elements of harmony in a matter of seconds alongside your friends. Celestia tasked you with the job because she knew you could do it.” “If you say so. Can you help me get a letter to her?” Twilight pulled out a scroll and handed it to Belial who covered it in shadows and sent it to Celestia. “We should get a response tomorrow. Come on, you need to sleep.” “What about you?” “I'll be fine.”
Beautiful Night“We are ruled by two princesses,” the teacher's sweet voice said as she started her lesson. I'll call for you a week from now to the throne room where you will defend the crystal from Rose.” “Understood, your majesty.”
Eternal Night“Wake up Belial, it's time,” Luna said, waking Belial up in her bed. They will be kept in safe hands, I promise.”
ReturnPonieville reminded Belial a lot of the old days of Canterlot.
