Warsong: Primordial Conflict
Chapter 38: Flutter Wonder
Previous ChapterNext ChapterAs if things couldn’t get any more stressful. Cloudchaser was pacing just above the ground back and forth in the lobby of Paradise Estate. The clean, wooden floors shined as if they had recently been waxed. Lounge chairs lined the sides of the walls by the front door. A couple of hanging plants with blossoming buds hung neatly to give the lobby a homey touch. One wall had several portraits lined with strange looking ponies.
Posey sulked behind the clerk desk, while the punkish mare, who went by Lack-a-daisy, dusted the portraits stoically uninterested. The pegasus had just finished pouring tea for us and began to pass it to us. When she offered Cloudchaser, the mare sighed and sadly took a sip out of the brew before setting it aside on a small table with a flower designed lamp. The pegasus with the glasses went by the name Concierge. She cleared her throat as she then went behind the counter. Posey kept her head bowed as she strangely and perfectly shifted a binder and several papers around before passing what appeared to be a ledger to Concierge before going back to shifting through files and paperwork.
Concierge opened the ledger and looked at each of us.
“Well then, since Moochik had gone against the rules… again… there are somethings you need to know about this place. One such thing is, and this is the very important golden rule, never speak or mention of the Paradise Estate to anycreature, relative or not affiliated. Doing so is an act of aggression and endangerment to current occupants of the Estate. Do I make myself clear?” We only nodded our heads in response. “Good. Now with that out of the way, let us start with your name and reason for visitation.” Her stern eyes met me.
I blinked and rubbed the back of my head.
“Err… My name is Quiet Fire. And as for reason… to live another day?” I replied, hoping that was good enough. Concierge shifted an unamused frown and took a quill, dabbing it in an ink pot and scribbling something on the ledger. I noticed her hoof writing wasn’t chicken scratch. It was a perfect stroke of calligraphy of old pone-ish. I narrowed my eyes slightly at this as she moved onto Thi.
“What about you?” She asked. Thi seemed a bit distracted. Concierge cleared her throat and rose an unamused brow as Thi blinked back to reality and looked at her. “Name and reason for visitation?” Thi rubbed the back of her neck slowly.
“Thi Billet. Avoiding the Triad.” She said simply. Concierge scoffed a bit and scribbled into the ledger. She then met Scribble’s look.
“Silver Scribble. Avoiding the Triad and live to fight another day.” He said. Concierge scribbled this down on the ledger. She then cleared her throat, trying to get Cloudchaser’s attention. I gave a worried look to the pretty mare as she looked out the window. Concierge groaned.
“You, pegasus. Your name and reason for visitation?” Concierge rose her voice. Cloudchaser looked over, as if having been snapped out of her stupor.
“Wha?” She asked. Concierge tapped the quill impatiently. She met my apologetic look before sighing.
“Cloudchaser and I don’t know. But I need to get back out there! Flitter is in danger!” She said worriedly. I got up and trotted over to her, taking a hold of her hoof with mine and squeezing it reassuringly.
“We will, Cloudchaser. We always do. We just need a better plan of action right now. Please, don’t tire yourself out from pacing. Save your energy.” I said softly. Cloudchaser hesitated before she touched the ground and sighed. Concierge grumbled. Thi arched a brow.
“So… what exactly is this place?” She asked.
“Paradise Estate is home to those that wish it to be a place to laugh, cheer, make memories and forever record them in the archives. Your stay is as long as you live as long as you follow the golden rule and mind the other occupants.” Posey spoke, her voice shaky and clearly distraught. Thi winced.
“Err… sorry?” She replied in uncertainty. Posey looked up from under her bangs.
“Sorry won’t bring back years of love and care.” She replied monotonously before letting her face plant into the counter. Lack-a-daisy groaned.
“Ugh, get over it, Posey. It doesn’t take that long to plant flowers. Why don’t you just go frolicking in the field like you always do?” She said in annoyance. Posey boredly looked up from her gloom before suddenly perking up, a strange sparkle shimmering around her as she did.
“Good idea!” Posey beamed before bounding happily out from behind the counter and out the door while singing a tune. I blinked in confusion before eyeing Lack-a-daisy. The punkish mare shrugged.
“She got the flowers from the field itself. Posey exaggerates her emotions too much.” Lack-a-daisy replied boredly.
“She’s supposed to be checking on the other occupants.” Concierge spoke. Lack-a-daisy shifted her bored expression.
“The occupants aren’t going anywhere. Speaking of. I need to prepare lunch.” Lack-a-daisy replied, putting down the duster and walking down a hall. Concierge proceeded to work on the papers in front of her. The room went quiet. We exchanged glances before I managed to clear my throat.
“Err… so… are we going to be shown our rooms?” I asked. Concierge looked up from her work.
“Pick any room you like. Just don’t disturb the other occupants.” She replied before burying her face into a binder. I looked to Cloudchaser and shrugged. We then proceeded to explore the estate. It was surprisingly smaller than I had thought. Only two wings with seven rooms each. Scribble and I looked up at a door. The plaque reading “04” engraved into it. I was about to reach for the handle when I noticed a pamphlet on the handle. “Do not disturb.”
Remembering what Concierge told us, we proceeded to look for rooms without the tag on it. Only three rooms were available. Two on the east wing and one in the west wing. Cloudchaser and I opened the door in the west wing. A singular bed, side table, a big window looking out to what appeared a separate building with a pool behind an iron gate. Cloudchaser opened a wardrobe, finding it filled with coats and other belongings as if somepony was already packed to live here.
“Huh.” Cloudchaser commented as she dug through the clutter as I opened the bed side desk. I was surprised with the amount of papers and clutter inside of it. The estate looked very clean inside and out, but I guess with only three mares working, they might not have had time to go through everything. This popped up several questions.
“Just what is this place? Is this why they don’t like random ponies dropping in out of nowhere?” I asked more to myself.
“Ohhohoh! Not quite, missy.” The voice of Moochik spoke. We looked to see him sweeping the hall outside our bedroom. Cloudchaser rubbed the back of her head.
“I don’t understand. Aren’t hotels supposed to clean up after occupants?” She asked. Moochik entered the room and closed the door as he proceeded to then sweep the floor.
“Aye, but this taint no ordinary hotel. Twas the haven o’ the heroes o’ Flutter Valley. Oi would git into tha’ story, but eh… Oi’m pressed fer time right now.” He chuckled. I narrowed my eyes suspiciously.
“Then what’s going on with the other occupants?” I asked curiously. Moochik chuckled.
“Nothin’ ta’ worry about! Best ye’ focus on gettin’ yer’ friend back, aye?” He replied. I frowned. I don’t like the dodginess of this all. But I can’t really complain. Rather a shady estate than a firing squad of Triad. Cloudchaser lowered her head in thought.
“So… where exactly are we?” She asked.
“Why, Flutter Valley o’ course! Best spot in all o’ Pony Land. Secluded, open an’ serene!” He beamed. Our eyes widened.
“Hold on… Pony Land? We’re actually in Pony Land?” Cloudchaser asked. Moochik nodded.
“Aye. Tis ‘ome o’ tha’ estate! Wouldn’ ‘ave it any other way!” He grinned. Cloudchaser and I exchanged glances. I then reached with my magic and locked the door. I then loomed over Moochik, who seemed a bit confused at this.
“I’m certain you have time to answer a few questions.” I said. Moochik began to sweat a bit and held the broom close to him.
“Ahaha… ehhh… dunnae’ what ye’ mean.” He said nervously. Cloudchaser floated past him and blocked the door while I positioned myself to ensure that he could only retreat to the sides. Moochik fell onto his rump and shivered in terror. I furrowed my look to concern before sighing.
“We aren’t going to hurt you. We really need to know what’s going on here. What were you doing rummaging through Triad stuff? You seemed to not be upset even looting off a dead pony. You were paid to do that? By who? And for what? And then, of course.” I motioned around the estate. “You’re able to transport from place to place with this whole estate. Who are those three ponies? Who are you, Moochik?” I began. Moochik nervously removed his cap and wringed it again.
“Err… Oi… Oi…” He sighed before fluffing out his cap and putting it back on.
“‘Oi wish oi can say. But I cannae. Not just fer the estate’s sake. But fer yer’s.” He replied. Cloudchaser and I exchanged defeated looks. He then held up a wrinkly finger. “B-but… err… ‘ah fudge puddin’… Oi guess oi can tell ye’ one thing. But tis up ta’ ye’ ta’ figure it out on yer’ own.” He then looked around the room, as if someone was listening in. He then motioned for us to come closer and we did. He then cupped his mouth and whispered. “‘Ah’m a Fae. Jus’ loik those three out there.” He then winced and quickly looked over his shoulder, as if he heard something approaching. When nothing did, he let out a sigh of relief before quickly clamping our muzzles. “Ye’ bes’ not speak o’ word out o’ this in tha’ estate. So long as ye’ avoid talkin’ about this place, yer free to speak openly off tha’ premises.”
He then carefully removed his hands from our muzzles and made a shushing motion, reaching down towards the broom and beginning to sweep. “Now ‘en. Oi bes’ get back to it. Lasses.” He bowed before unlocking and opening the door, leaving Cloudchaser and I to ponder what he said. I then shifted my frown, giving her a knowing look.
“Let’s get the others and see what we can find out in Pony Land.” I said. Cloudchaser nodded, seemingly confused but trusting in me. We trotted out of the room and I saw Scribble looking through his journal. He was about to pull out his quill and jot down something when I quickly yanked it out of his hoof with my magic and closed the journal. He seemed irritated but when he saw my serious look and subtle shake of my head, he eased a bit.
“Where’s Thi?” I asked. Scribble pointed at the door.
“Said she needed some fresh air.” He replied. I sighed.
“We need to get her as well. It’s important on what we should do from here on.” I said. Scribble nodded in understanding. I looked over my shoulder to Concierge. “Err… are we allowed freely out and in of the estate now that we are… registered?” I asked, keeping myself calm at the discovery. Concierge sighed in annoyance.
“We’d rather you just never return. But I’m not holding my breath.” She replied. This was confusing but at the same time a relief. I opened the door with my magic and we stepped out. Beyond the iron gate entrance of Paradise Estate is a field of colorful flowers and tall grass that waved with the spring breeze. I looked around, hoping to find Thi. Cloudchaser floated upwards and scanned the area. She then pointed just over the estate wall.
“Thi is heading down to the river bank.” She said. I nodded and we proceeded to make our way, following a thin, dirt path. I never thought a place like this could exist. The Valley is dotted in trees. But this field made me feel… longing? It was a strange feeling. Almost peaceful and serene. Cloudchaser led the way and as we approached a hill top, we could see Thi sitting by her lonesome down by the river.
She stared into her reflection, her bangs covering her face. I quietly braced myself as we made our way down. When we approached her, she looked over her shoulder to me. Her expression told me she was silently bracing herself as well. I steeled myself as I was still sticking by what I said to her. But maybe… just maybe? No pony said anything. It wasn’t until I sighed and spoke that the silence was broken.
“There is something you need to know before we discuss other stuff.” I said, trying to keep a stoic expression. Thi didn’t respond. “Just learned something from Moochik. Though just to be sure we are entirely okay, let’s cross the river.” I said. Thi looked confused as did Cloudchaser. Scribble then reached into his pouch and dropped a rock, crushing it in his hoof and creating a root bridge over the water. We made our way over and I suddenly felt no longer serene or peaceful.
It was honestly jarring despite the scene has not changed. When we were a bit further down the field, I then turned and faced the distant Paradise Estate.
“So, we are screwed, long and short of it.” I said suddenly.
“Wha?” Cloudchaser asked. I turned to my friends.
“We gave our names away to fae folk.” I replied. Thi and Cloudchaser looked confused but Scribble’s dawning realization told me he knew. I nodded to him.
“I’m sorry… fae folk?” Thi asked.
“They are creatures said to be long forgotten to the world. But there has been reports over centuries of records believing that the fae are still around.” I said, remembering my time reading through the Crystal Prep library on cryptids. “Fae are notoriously mischievous to the point where if you are tricked by them, it could lead to a fate worse than death. The number one thing every record states that if you believe you are talking to a fae, you are not to give your name away. It allows them full power over you.” Din shifted in my head.
I’d like to see them try. She grinned eagerly. Cloudchaser tapped her chin.
“So… we unknowingly screwed ourselves greatly?” She asked. I sighed and nodded.
“Hopefully they realize that they are picking on a primal star. But there are several ground rules we need to establish. For one, Concierge is right. We are to follow the number one rule to a tee. Not even a wink of a mention.” I sat on my haunches. “As for the rest, we are to respect the fae. Do not go poking around the estate willy nilly. Do not, under any circumstance, let them make you believe something that sounds ridiculous. And most importantly, do not be lulled by anything they offer. I… don’t know what’ll happen if the fae end up messing with us.
“All I know is that we are now official residents to Paradise Estate.” Thi bowed her head.
“Damn… so that’s what they meant by other occupants.” She stated. I studied her sadly before readying my next words.
“Now with that out of the way, it seems we are free to go in and out of Paradise Estate. And I for one would like to see if I can find somewhere else to sleep. Thi.” I began. Thi winced. “You know Pony Land, don’t you? Would you be able to recognize anything from where we are?” Thi blinked a little before raising her head and looking around. After a bit, she shook her head.
“I honestly don’t know. There are a lot of fields in Pony Land that you’ll see going between villages and cities.” She said. Scribble hummed in thought.
“You know… I was expecting Pony Land to be a bit more… advanced.” He stated. Thi nodded.
“It is. Though with that being said, I can safely say we are far from any form of modern civilization.” She looked upwards to the sky and began to scan it. “Not even an airship in sight.” Scribble reached into his bag and withdrew his journal.
“Careful of what you mention.” I told him and he nodded in response.
“Right. So, based on that, I can assume that the fae have hidden themselves far enough from civilization. But that doesn’t mean they are entirely kept hidden. Which means we have to be close to something.” He said. I sighed in frustration.
“If only we had more to go off of. I want to ask Moochik more but I’m worried he might get punished for it.” I replied. Cloudchaser nodded.
“Even for being a fae himself, he is oddly terrified of the three ponies. If they even are ponies.” She said. Thi darted her eyes in thought.
“Then maybe we should pick our words carefully and ask them.” She suggested.
“Are we sure about that?” Cloudchaser asked. Thi nodded.
“If the fae are to be believed, then shouldn’t they have already tried to mess with us? I figured they’d be a bit more reluctant for us to head out of bounds of the estate. In fact, I think they don’t want us to come back.” She explained. I furrowed my look worriedly.
“I hope you’re right. Maybe that’s what they want us to believe.” I replied, looking over my shoulder to the estate. With the decision made, we began to make our track back to the estate. Crossing Scribble’s makeshift bridge, we felt the serene feeling return. As we made it halfway up the path, we stopped as we saw Poesy bounding playfully in the fields. She was pirouetting and twirling blissfully with what appeared to be a hat of flowers on her head. With the knowledge we had now, we became very cautious.
When she bounded closer, laughing to herself, that’s when I cleared my throat, catching the mare’s attention. She looked over confused before beaming and skipping in her trot over to us.
“Oh, hello! I thought you left already! Don’t you just love to dance among the flowers?” She asked eerily giddy. I gave her my best smile I could.
“U-uh huh. Err… we have a couple of questions.” I began. Posey gasped and covered her muzzle.
“Oh my. Was it about earlier?? I’m terribly sorry, I have the worst mood swings when I hear the screams of my little friends.” She said panicked. Thi was cautious with her words.
“Y-yes. Sorry about the uhh… mess, but the Triad do tend to not hold anything back. Ahh-.” She stopped herself and glanced at me before stepping back a little. I side-eyed her before looking back at the mare.
“We would like to ask if you know where the nearest village or city is.” I began. “I would also like to ask how long our stay at the hotel is.” Posey blinked and tilted her head.
“Why, that shouldn’t matter anymore. You're esteemed residents to Paradise Estate now. You’re free to come and go as you wish so long as you follow the rules.” She smiled. “As for your other question, we don’t get much visitors. And the ones we do get tend to be a bit rude and unkempt. But it’s okay. They eventually calm down when they learn more of our hospitality.” She giggled. That wasn’t my question. I was careful upon proceeding.
“Right. Well, I would still like to know if there is any village in particular you… visit?” I asked. Posey hummed as she thought.
“Well, Lack-a-daisy is the one that tends to get groceries. Perhaps ask her? I wish I could do more but I just love my little friends.” She said, looking a bit smitten as she brushed a flower tenderly. We began to back away slowly.
“R-right, thank you, Posey.” I said as I quickly made a slight motion with my head. We trotted hurriedly back to the estate, dreading our decision even more as we approached the iron gates. Lack-a-daisy was in the garden, snipping at what looked to be a heart shaped hedge bush before moving over to one that looked like a swan. As we approached her, she spoke.
“Not now, I’m busy.” She said suddenly. I was hesitant if I should press on. I braced myself.
“We just want to ask if you happen to know of a village you visit?” I asked. Lack-a-daisy snipped at the bushes without looking at us as she responded.
“If it’ll get you to go away, then yeah. It’s eastward past the oak. Take a right down the road and you’ll come to Sundew Hill. Nice ponies there. You better mind your manners.” She replied before making a shooing motion with her hoof. I couldn’t help but feel like we were just being overly paranoid, but at the same time, the warnings were still hitting me across the head. We walked away from the busy mare before Scribble spoke.
“That’s interesting.” He commented. Thi rubbed her chin.
“Sundew Hill… Sundew Hill…” she shrugged and looked at us. “Never heard of that village. I’m starting to think we are on the other side of Pony Land or something.” She said.
“Then let’s go.” I replied. We made our way back out of the estate and followed a path that led to an oak tree in the distance. As we made our way, my thoughts fell back to Flitter. I should had grabbed her in the confusion, but at the same time, I’m glad we didn’t. Flitter has enough going on. And with the way Cloudchaser was postured, the weight of worry was heavy. I reached for her hoof and locked it with mine. She blinked and looked at me. I gave her a reassuring smile and she returned it with a thankful one.
It took us twenty minutes to walk from Paradise Estate to Sundew Hill. The village was surprisingly… suburban. Cobblestone dotted road, some old fashiony stores and buildings strangely reminiscent to older cartoons that I can think of. I had expected Pony Land to be nothing but trenches and military might. Imagine my surprise at how… normal it was. Thi even pointed out that there is indeed Triad claim on the village. The iron colored banners draped on some of the buildings and what I would call “propaganda posters” plastered on nearly every street corner.
The ponies here also seemed to be as normal as they could be. Unicorn, earth pony and pegasi going about their daily day to day stuff and even hanging out in groups and chatting. Even the foals and fillies were playing with each other. It honestly was a relief to have this one village break my expectations. We remained cautious, however, as we were still in enemy territory. Thi managed to find a clothing store and suggested we should blend in better and stock up.
I mentioned we’d have a better time if we split up into two. Thi was hesitant and against this. But she conceded, not wanting to press it further. I was annoyed by this. She’s still trying to decide? Fine. She can think about it all she wants. As for me, I brought Cloudchaser along, wanting a boost to my mood. Cloudchaser and I held hooves as we walked down the street, browsing the shops that had interesting displays. I made a quick shy glance at Cloudchaser. The pegasus mare didn’t seem interested in the displays.
“You know, there are more interesting things than the ground.” I teased softly. Cloudchaser blinked and looked at me.
“Oh? Sorry…” She replied sadly. I gave a worried look. I squeezed her hoof softly.
“CC, don’t worry. We’ll get Flitter back. We just need to ensure we have a game plan and not be inconvenienced by certain company.” I told her reassuringly. That was another thing I have to figure out. Should we intimidate the fae enough to get them to release our names? Din cackled softly.
I’m unfamiliar with fae magic, but this power seems desirable. I just need to do my own thorough investigation. She replied to my thoughts with a small lick of her muzzle. I shivered a little, disturbed by the gesture before thinking of something more. If Din can’t figure out Fae magic, then we need a backup plan. Befriend the fae but play hard to get? That sounds tempting, but how can we make it convincing enough?
My thoughts were cut as I heard Cloudchaser sigh and I looked over to her.
“Fie… can I tell you something?” She began. I smiled kindly.
“Of course.” I replied. Cloudchaser and I stopped and faced each other, our hoofs still locked to one another.
“Firstly, I just want to… apologize for not stepping up as I should have. You wanted me to keep an eye on Thi and I…” she sighed. “I wasn’t sure how to. Thi is just so… unpredictable half the time. What happened at the temple was in part due to me not managing everything.” She said. I blinked at this before giggling softly.
“You don’t need to apologize for anything Thi has to deal with. What happened at the temple is anypony’s guess. Stratadon, Ursa Major or greed. I doubt even Thi was ready for any of it.” I replied. Cloudchaser smiled a little.
“Then… next, I want to talk about Flitter.” She began. I nodded and quietly listened. “I know it’s… it’s a lot for her. Almost every night she keeps having night terrors of that moment. She even got to the point of talking in her sleep so much that I’m worried she’s actually talking to Sombra.” Cloudchaser lowered her head. “Flitter always did her best to keep herself mentally healthy and stable, even after all we’ve been through. She’s… honestly a lot tougher than I am.” She shook her head. “I don’t know… I should have done something different. I let my anger get the better of me and I… I can just imagine the pony I killed then dragging me down with him…”
I gave a reassuring smile and placed a hoof gently on her cheek.
“I know that feeling as well. Before the whole Hoofington incident… when I had to blend in… well…” I sighed. “I’m certain Viper deserved it. But… I could never fully grasp it as her death had washed away with all the lives in Hoofington…” Cloudchaser met my look. “It’s hard, I know. But I can come to terms with the demons inside and… be my best self in the end when I’m around everypony.” Cloudchaser studied me a bit before she burst into a giggle.
“Hehehe. Why is corniness always something that makes things a little better?” She grinned. I gave her a playful wink.
“I’m a hopeless romantic. What can I say?” I replied. I suddenly got nervous and began to fidget. “I-Is there anything else you want to talk about?” I flushed. Cloudchaser darted her eyes in thought.
“I… don’t have anything else at the moment. What about you?” She asked. I opened my mouth, only to stop myself and mentally step back a bit.
‘That’s selfish of me. That is not a good thing to do at this moment, Fie.’ I thought to myself. I then had an idea. I took a hold of her hoof and softly pulled her along. “C’mon. I think we need a break from all the events. Have to clear our heads now and then, ya’ know?” I smirked. Cloudchaser tilted her head a little but then gave me a small smile. I decided that we should take this opportunity to experience another side of our world.
Sundew Hill is surprisingly a normal village. It made me curious to understand how close our neighbors are to us. We stopped to get what is called a Dough-Bun Hunkaroo. A funny name for a bread bun filled with melty cream cheese and vegetables. The mare and stallion pair were pleasant to talk too and understood pone-ish fluently. However, when it came to pay, they rejected our bits. They explained to us that Equestrian currency is not accepted in Pony Land and instead, actual crystalized sugar cubes were used. Yet, they were nice enough to allows us one free Dough-Bun Hunkaroo to share free of charge and directed us to the Sundew Bank.
We passed by several shops and kiosks that sold rather unusual things that I thought Ponyville’s Antiquing Shop wouldn’t have. Good to know that there was even an apple orchard here as well, but instead of it being near the village, we learned from the seller that the orchard is farther up north near the border of the kingdom of Fenice. This made me remember that Pony Land is separated by a north and southern kingdom. Our main goal is Euclides, which thankfully we are in.
I had asked where is the capital of Euclides and how long it’d take us to get there from here. Our ears dropped when a tour guide mentioned it could take roughly a week by autowagon. Our best bet would be to catch the airships that would lower the travel days to three. Cloudchaser had asked how long would it be via pegasus flight and we were immediately met with a strange law here in Pony Land. Pegasi are allowed to fly at certain height levels sanctioned by the Equestrian Ministries Inquisition. There are certain fly zones that are forbidden by pedestrian pegasi to venture. If they were to travel by flight, they had to follow the main roads below as to ensure not to intercept or fly into pedestrian air ships. They said it was for the safety of all as they had incidents where a majority of the airship crashes back then were due to pegasi being free of flying where ever.
With this in mind, we proceeded to the bank where we had the teller exchange our currency into crystalized sugar cubes. There was nothing complex about the currency as it was the same in Equestria. One bit is one sugar cube. With our satchel full of sugar cubes, we proceeded to shop around. We checked out interesting clothing shops as well as parlors and courts that were popular to hang out in. Cloudchaser and I couldn’t help but feel a bit of nostalgia for Ponyville.
We bought ourselves some new saddlebags and some restoratives that I’ll have Scribble study a bit to ensure we weren’t going to poison ourselves with the Sombranite. Better safe than sorry. I then stopped by the clothing store real quick to have my cloak patched up as the cuts where Fickle stabbed me were still visible along with the tiger claws. With my newly patched hoodie cloak good as new, Cloudchaser and I decided to take a quick break by a spa and hot springs place. I was amazed that they were able to have hot springs in Pony Land. Cloudchaser and I cuddled together as we let the hot water sooth our stress and tension.
This was like cloud nine for me. Even Cloudchaser seemed to be feeling lighter. I wanted to cuddle a bit longer, but we were told not to spend too long in the hotsprings for our safety. Yet, I couldn’t help but playfully tease Cloudchaser suggestively, seeing her reactions before she called me out on my tease with a good whip of the towel on my flank. Feeling refreshed and a little giddy, we continued to explore Sundew Hill. Cloudchaser had a wing wrapped around me as we made our way to the main plaza. I soon started to worry about Thi and Scribble.
“I hope Thi and Scribble haven’t gotten themselves too lost.” I said with a worried bite of my lip. Cloudchaser scanned the plaza, hoping to spy them. She eventually pointed further down the plaza and we could see Thi and Scribble… locked in an embrace? Thi was wearing what looked to be a brown cloak, the hood covering her face as she was locked in a passionate kiss with Scribble, the stallion looking quite stoic about it.
I was taken aback while Cloudchaser snickered.
“Should we interrupt them?” She asked. I furrowed my look worriedly. I then nodded and Cloudchaser seemed to not really take that answer seriously until I walked out from her wing hold and over to them. I then stopped and noticed that past them were what appeared to be several Triad guards walking further down the road, seemingly chatting and enjoying themselves. When they were out of view, Thi pulled away from Scribble and the two stared into each other’s eyes.
I was once again taken aback by the sudden blushes the two had before Thi pushed Scribble away a little.
“I… Sorry.” Thi said. I cleared my throat as Scribble seemed to adjust his coat’s scuff before looking at me. Thi brushed a bang out of her face and lowered her head to have the hood cover her face while Scribble cleared his own throat.
“I uhh… hope you got something out of our visit here.” Scribble spoke. Cloudchaser smirked knowingly. I, however, had several questions and concerns. But that’ll be for later.
“We’ve learned a few things. We’ll discuss it when we get back.” I said, being careful with my words. Thi only nodded quietly. I narrowed my eyes suspiciously at her but kept my thoughts to myself as we began to make our way out of the village. On the way back to the estate, we had to keep our heads low as several auto wagons bearing the Triad symbol puttered by us. Seems if we are going to be traveling on hoof, we’ll have to be careful.
Turning down the road and retracing our hoof steps, I was beginning to wonder if the estate had left. It was supposed to be right here, wasn’t it? I looked around, unable to spy a pink building.
“Ah, yer back!” A voice said. We looked to see Moochik rummaging through a sack. I arched a brow.
“Where’s the err…” I began, having to stop myself. Moochik withdrew several trinkets as he spoke.
“Aye, twill be back soon. Had ta’ free up some room.” He replied with a concentrated tongue sticking out as he rummaged more. Scribble tilted his head and rubbed his chin.
“Free up… some room?” He asked. A sudden dread befell us but Moochik seemed to read our worry.
“Aye. ‘Oi figured word would get out. Nicely bein’ discreet, Fie.” He said with a wink. I shifted my slight frown. “Occupants do take up quite a wee bit o’ space. Yer lucky we’s in fer spring cleanin’.” He chuckled. “No worries. Tis nothin’ grotesque or mortifyin’. Ahh, right on time.” Moochik began to put the trinkets back in when what felt like way too many butterflies began to appear and flutter around us. The ground began to burst to life with colorful butterflies that seemed to swirl and make a colorful cloud.
As quickly as it happened, the butterflies fluttered away and the Paradise Estate was back to where it was. Moochik waddled past us and opened the iron gate, following him in. Concierge was sweeping the porch of the estate. She gave us an unfriendly look.
“I figured you’d leave by now.” She commented. I cleared my throat and shook my head.
“We err… need to prepare a bit before we begin to travel. We thank you for your hospitality though.” I replied. Concierge snorted before going back to sweeping. Moochik chuckled.
“She maybe stern an’ strict, but she the bes’ one ta’ run this estate. Wouldn’ have it any other way.” He told us as we walked past her into the lobby. Thi removed her cloak, revealing a newly bought denim jacket. She sighed and made a quick glance at us. I turned to Scribble and passed my saddle bag over to him.
“We bought some restoratives. Are you able to see if they aren’t filled with Sombranite of any kind?” I asked. Scribble blinked before humming in thought.
“It’ll be a bit. I’ll let you know in the morning. I’m pretty exhausted from all the talking.” He said before walking past us. Thi was quiet, avoiding eye contact from the stallion as he walked by. When he headed down the hall to his room, I cast a quick glance to Cloudchaser. She nodded knowingly and stretched.
“Well, I’m beat as well. See ya’ in a bit, Fie.” She smiled before walking down the opposite hall. When we were alone, I observed Thi. She knew I hadn’t left. Bracing herself, she set down the cloak and turned to face me.
“I’m… ready.” She said. I arched a brow.
“Really? In enemy territory no less? Granted this was our only option, I’m not comfortable leaving you on your own here.” I replied. Thi hesitated.
“Then… what do you…?” She began. I sighed and rubbed my muzzle.
“When we started this journey, you called me out on my own selfishness. Which really made me think about things as we went. And what do you know? It worked out. Call it luck or what you will, but you can’t deny after everything we’ve been through. That being said…” I eyed Thi. “How we’ve come full circle.” Thi flushed a bit, rubbing the back of her head.
“I… I didn’t know what else to think. I panicked.” She replied. I sat on my haunches and crossed my forelegs.
“Panicked? That’s not like you at all. You’re always so calm, calculative and dare I say, ‘badass’?” I asked sternly. “So, was that just a heat of the moment? Didn’t mean anything and only meant to cover your hide? I don’t care what Silver Scribble says or thinks of it, you should have known better than to mess with his feelings like that.” I frowned as Thi met my look.
“No! I didn’t… I really meant…” I could see her sweating a bit. I’ve never seen Thi so under pressure. Though, I can’t say she doesn’t deserve it. But now I’m left with how to go about this. I sighed and rubbed my muzzle.
“You set yourself up on this for making me your best friend, if I ever was to you. I was hoping some time away would cool your head. Figure things out. But since we are kind of stuck in a predicament, I’ll have to rethink of something.” I met her look seriously. “And I believe I have one. A solution, if you will.” I then turned to the counter. I had seen Posey and Lack-a-daisy minding their own business with paper work behind it. “Posey? Lack-a-daisy? Do you need an extra hoof around the Estate?” I asked.
Posey looked up and smiled, not skipping a beat with her work.
“Oh, wow! No pony has ever offered to help! What do you think, Lackie?” Posey beamed. Lack-a-daisy groaned.
“Don’t call me that, Posey.” The mare then gave an unamused brow. “We’ll have to run it by Concierge. An extra hoof would be great, to be honest. Spring cleaning is going to be hell.” She sighed. I smiled and looked to Thi.
“Then that settles it. Thi, for your own good and as punishment for so recklessly being a threat to an entire nation, you are under house arrest in the estate. You are to help the ponies clean up and listen to whatever task they have to give you.” I said. Thi blinked in confusion.
“W-wha?” She asked. I frowned coldly, stamping my hoof.
“Count your stars that this is the easiest punishment you can have after everything you’ve done. And if you start slacking off on any of this or I find out that you’ve been sneaking out and being a ‘badass’, I will personally hunt you down and plant your ass at the top of the fountain head and making you the pigeon’s next perch. Do I make myself clear?” I scolded. Thi shrunk down a bit and gulped. Posey giggled.
“Wow! Concierge would love you.” Posey grinned at me. She then brought up a strange black device, bringing it up to her ear. “Concierge? Posey here! One of our guests has offered to help us around the estate for Spring Cleaning. Yes… Yes… Of course!” Posey then put the device down and zipped out from behind the counter, putting a full maids dress on Thi Billet. She blinked and examined herself, flushing.
“D-do I really have to wear this??” She asked embarrassed. Posey hummed and rubbed her chin. She then beamed at an idea.
“It’s either that or the string suite.” She said, reaching over and bringing forward a very questionable and suggestive piece of clothing. Thi slumped, her face bright red.
“E-err… I-I’ll stick with the maid outfit…” She stammered. Posey blinked and shrugged, tossing the string suite behind her as the sound of crashing into something reached our ears. She then moved around Thi and began to push her with her head.
“Alright! We might as well get started now! We have several towels by the pool that need to be washed and dried! Quickly, while we still have sunlight!” She chuckled. Thi looked over her shoulder to me. I rose a brow questioningly.
“It’s for your own good.” I reiterated to her as she was pushed out the side door. The door closed and I sighed, looking to Lack-a-daisy. “Nothing bad is going to happen to her, is there?” I asked curiously. Lack-a-daisy shrugged.
“I take it Moochik talked too much. Not like it matters. She’ll be fine so long as she is doing what she is told.” She said. I felt my heart skip a beat. I was curious even more now.
“Oh… uhh… then… is there a way where we can… not have ourselves at the whim of… well…” I asked, bracing myself. Lack-a-daisy withdrew the ledger and opened it up to the page with our names.
“Moochik is old school fae. We could care less about using your name for our amusement. All we care about is preserving Paradise Estate and what it stood for. Follow the rules and we won’t have to turn you into flowers.” She closed the ledger and put it away. “Among other things.” I wasn’t entirely reassured, but I hope this’ll be a lesson for Thi. I’m not comfortable about leaving somepony stranded in enemy territory or death sentences. And yet, I’m having her work for fae as punishment. But the punishment should be great enough to not have it happen again.
I just want my best friend back. The pony I know now isn’t her. I began to walk back to my room and I opened the door, seeing Cloudchaser rummaging through the closet.
“I sure hope no pony is looking for these.” She said, holding up what looked to be a rustic horseshoe in disgust. She tossed it aside and smiled softly at me. “Did you say what you needed?” I closed the door and nodded.
“It’ll be a while for me to fully forgive her. Once I know my best friend is back with me, I can feel much better.” I said. Cloudchaser closed the closet and stretched.
“Well, I dunno about you, but I’m pretty beat from all that walking.” She said, lying on her back sprawled out in a relaxed manner on the bed. I flushed slightly, my eyes wandering a bit. I sneakily opened the door and checked both sides before slipping the “Do Not Disturb” on the knob and locked the door. I then let out a quiet sigh of relief and removed my hoodie cloak, tossing it onto a chair before removing the chainmail. I walked towards the bed.
I then crawled over to Cloudchaser and smiled softly, tossing my hind leg over her and looking down at her from on top. Cloudchaser turned a bright red at this.
“O-oh… U-uhh… wasn’t… expecting this…” She smiled bashfully. I put a hoof on her lips softly and giggled.
“After our sudden date in Sundew? I’m in the mood to be a bit more… adventurous.” I teased. Cloudchaser’s wings were unable to close properly as she cutely brought her forelegs to her chest. I giggled again. “I wanted to properly make a day for us. I hope I didn’t disappoint~.” Cloudchaser stammered her words. I found her super cute in this reaction. Yet, I was still uncertain of what her heart wants. I wanted something to brighten my mood a bit. I sighed and nuzzled under her chin, hugging her.
Cloudchaser hesitated big time. It wasn’t until her hooves wandered did our night turn into a pleasant one.
