Wings of Fire
About thirteen thousand feet in the air, the rust-bucket of a plane I’m in is flying towards the drop zone. Behind the pilot, sitting on the edge of a seat, my legs refuse to quit shaking as I twiddle my fingers and wait patiently for the plane to reach it’s destination. The last two runs were supervised by a veteran diver. This was to insure that I was actually prepared for this solo dive. Receiving satisfactory results from him, he believed I was ready for this test. But even with his high remarks, I still feel... pretty nervous. After all, it is my first solitary leap of faith.
Looking to the roof, I close my eyes and force myself to calm down. “I'll be fine...” I assure myself. “I've been training months for this, it should be no sweat... right?” As much as I want to believe that everything will be alright, I still feel edgy. Then again, it’s probably typical for anyone to have second thoughts, just before a jump, even if I’ve done it several times during the last few weeks. It’s basically the same feeling I get as some people would get in a line for a roller coaster, except there are no tracks, no harnesses, no brakes; just one parachute, and if it doesn’t work, I might as well kiss my ass goodbye.
A mental image of me ending up like a squashed bug on the ground flashes before my eyes, making me cringe as I search my back frantically. The rough, bulky feeling of my parachute comforts me, so I relax into my seat. What's wrong with me? I'm fully prepared for this, I chide myself mentally. The parachute's secure, air suit fits well, goggles ready, weather conditions fair. All I have to do is...
“We're getting close to the jump zone!” the pilot calls, interrupting my thoughts.
His voice is like an electric jolt to my system. A growing warmth spreads through my body, causing me to sweat slightly as adrenaline begins kicking in; even my heartbeat has become painfully noticeable. This is it; my final chance to back out...
No!
I stand up and shake off my nervousness, and begin bending down to touch my toes, giving off low grunts as I do so. “I've passed all the training courses, I've done it many times before, I know... Exactly. What. To do!” I repeat this to myself as I straighten my back up and begin twisting from side to side. I continue to stretch, trying to help ease the tension and soreness in my joints.
Stepping out of the cockpit, the co-pilot walks up next to the door and clips himself onto the safety rail. He takes a quick glance at me as he braces himself and opens the door, allowing a blast of icy wind into the plane that sends a chill down my spine. Sweat and cold wind do not mix well. Pausing for a moment, he presses his palm against the headset he's wearing, then gives me a thumbs up.
“There's no turning back now,” I think and then sigh as I unclip my own safety tether and walk forward.
At the door, I position myself and wait for the signal. The co-pilot moves, tugging on a strap, and points to me as if asking. “You ready?”
I nod yes, knowing that words would simply be lost to the wind. He then points to the door and holds up three fingers. “You jump when I signal, in three...”
I get set to jump, grabbing hold on to both sides of the door. From here, I can see both the clear, blue sky above and the quilt-like ground below. A shiver runs through my body as I take in the nearly hypnotic sight.
One finger down. In two...
I refocus on the jump; the plane is nearly atop my point origin. This is no time to get lost in the alluring view.
Second finger down. In one...
A warm feeling enshrouds me as a second surge of adrenaline rushes through my body. The final moment of truth is upon me, and for some odd reason, it always calms me. I’m not exactly sure why it does, but it makes the decision to jump that much easier.
Go!
Pulling with my arms, I shift my weight forward and fall into the endless sky. As gravity and the wind take me away, I give out a thrilled shout.
“WOO HOO!”
My arms and legs are splayed out as I face towards the ground. The wind rushes through my black, and short hair. But it is still long enough for it to flap uncontrollably behind my head. I feel nothing but pure joy as I fall, because to me, there no greater feeling of freedom than when I dive. The only thing that could top it would be to actually have wings to fly, but I know in my heart that it would be impossible...
Sure, the time before my jump is mentally excruciating, but once I made that leap, all my worries fade away. With little time left ‘till I become a pancake on the ground, I begin to do a couple of flips and twists. Those same kind of twirls and spins those divers from the Olympics do before they enter smoothly in the water. But, unfortunately, even if I were to somehow land in water, the impact could kill me, so soon enough, I have to slow myself down.
I straighten out back to the position I was first in to prepare the release of my parachute. My right hand grabs onto the release strap and I pull on it.
My heart sinks into my gut when I notice I’m falling freely. I bring my hand out in front of me and see that the handle of my release strap has snapped off. My worst fears are coming into reality. I am going to die... is all I can think.
After a moment of complete hopelessness, thoughts of my instructor’s voice echoes through my mind.
Every parachute bag has an emergency release zipper. You only use this when your strap fails, because the back end of your pack flies off, and you won't be able to use that chute again.
That was a bit annoying at the time because each new trainee had to pay for their own gear, and well... Let's just say this shit is expensive. But right now, that’s the last thing on my mind. Horrid, terrible images flash unconsciously in my eyes. I can feel myself getting sicker after each one.
I lift my hand up to my savior, and clench my fingers on it. I pray to the skydiving gods in desperation for this to work. The likely chance of this failing is pretty slim, but with my strap coming apart, I feel like the dude who brought the knife to a gunfight.
I pull up on it.
Now, imagine how a puppy reacts when he sees that his owner is coming home. The dog is jumping around and barking his ass off, because he knows that the owner is going to give him a treat and possibly spend some quality time with his lovable, best friend. Well, that’s how I react when I see the back end of my pack come apart with a red and white chute flying out. Maybe not the jumping part, but I sure as hell barking “THANK YOU, GOD!” until my lungs give out as the wind resistance takes a hold of me, and roughly slings me backwards.
Yes, it may sound a little childish to you, but honestly, the fear that gripped me before hand, was like staring into Grim Reaper’s empty, heartless eyes. I could have begged him until my face turned purple, but it wouldn’t have stopped him from taking me, unless I fought against him.
I cover my eyes and feel my hands quivering with fear. “I’m gonna be alright. I’m fine. The chute is out and I’ll land safely on the ground.” Even with these thoughts running through my mind, I still can’t shake the feeling that I’m missing something. I soon take my hands away.
Oh shit...
The grim reaper is back for vengeance.
At an estimate, I can tell that I’m at least five-hundred feet from the ground. Now, why is this bad? I can not say how fast I’m falling, but I know that I let my chute out too late and that my landing isn’t going to be a soft one. As a matter of fact, at the speed I’m coming in at, there is no chance of me not breaking bones or sustaining a serious injury.
I try to lean back some so I could land less direct towards the ground, as it could weaken the impact, but it is rather difficult to due to wind fighting against me. I give up on it and close my eyes. At this point, I’m begging to the skydiving gods that this landing will knock me out cold so I won’t feel a thing.
While my eyes are closed, I hear a loud rumble fairly close to me. It’s almost like thunder, and the wind starts picking up its speed. I can feel it actually lifting me up dragging me towards the sound. The abrupt change in weather was bizarre to me. Besides the fact that I’m so close to the ground, I had checked the weather conditions this morning, and there wasn’t a single heavy weather system in the area. I open an eye to only to have them both widen in shock by the sight.
A mass of dark, rainbow-colored clouds are swirling like a black hole in front of me. They start off fairly small at first, almost as big as a helicopter blade’s span, but the mass quickly grew into a massive rainbow hurricane. Lightning flashes throughout the clouds causing an eerie, multicolored glow amongst them, along with a loud roar of thunder occurring after each and every flash. As the mass of clouds grow bigger, the winds start increasing in velocity, dragging me closer and closer to the middle of the system.
I’m being flung around like one of those toy soldiers kids get as a cheap stocking stuffer for Christmas. The main difference is that I’m yelling at the top of my lungs and cursing as I enter the eye of the storm. I don't hear my own voice through the wind, but seeing just how hopeless this situation is, it seems to be the only reaction when being sucked in by some black hole-like clouds. Upon my entrance, I feel an intense electric shock, and everything goes dark as I fall into oblivion.

I shot up from my bed, still yelling, with beads of sweat traveling down my forehead. Breathing rapidly, I see a guy that looks... exactly like me staring back. Oh wait... that is me. I can see the perspiration flowing down my muscular, toned face from my dresser mirror. It scares me a little to see how pale I look, but its more than likely just caused by the stress of the my nightmare. My hair looks like I stuck my finger in an electrical outlet, and then decided to fall in front of my face.
“I-it was that just a dream?” I say while moving the length of hair out of my face. “But... That doesn't make any sense.” Which it truly didn't.
I normally have dreams about myself skydiving, considering diving instructor was the job I’ve been training for during the past month. But never have they been that vivid or... long. I practically went through a whole day in my sleep. You know how annoying that is? Don't get me wrong, I love that it was about skydiving, but all that work I did while passed out made me feel more tired than I should be.
What was even stranger was that vortex of rainbow clouds. I have never seen anything like it. Except maybe in one those dumb Skittle commercials where they say, “Taste the Rainbow” at the end, and it starts storming candy. But there was nothing sweetabout that storm; just a pleasant thousand volt shock to my ass. “That was horrible!”
I have no idea what could caused me to dream up such a thing, but I could only assume it was caused by something I ate yesterday. “Definitely shouldn't eat so much junk food before going to bed.” I note.
I place my hands beside me and lean against them as I look around my room.
The walls are covered in posters of my favorite bands, video games, and movies. On the floor are either clean or worn clothes strewn all over the place. Sure, is was a mess, but it comforting to know that I am still alive and in safety of my bed.
As nice as that is, being inside isn't really who I am. Sure, I enjoy playing my Playbox or seeing a good movie every once in awhile, but I prefer to be outside as much as possible.
“Well, I've got better things to do than lay in bed all day. Hmmm... maybe the guys are for a scrimmage game.” Turning to get out of bed excitedly, I suddenly feel something wet drop on my head. I stop for a moment and look up.
“Gah! What the...?!”
Another drop of it falls but this time; it lands right in my eye. I rub it and think, “I better tell the landlord to check the plumbing today.”
Once I finish cleaning out my eye, I get off the bed and turn around to see a developing stream of water falling from the ceiling, soaking my bed. “Yeeeeaahhh, I can't have this happening all day. I'll call him now.”
My cellphone is laying on my bedside table, and when I pick it up...
“Alright, this starting to annoy me.”
Somehow, a new stream of water starts pouring on my head. I look over at my bed and to then the ceiling again. It shows a short wet trail from my bed to me. “Soooo, the water is following me? Alrighty then...”
I move out of the stream, and as I predicted, it moves right above me. I look at the wall with eyebrows furrowed. I go to move out of its way again, but...
“Oh, for Luna’s sake, WAKE UP!”
A woman's voice echoes through my room. It had a punk surfer accent to it. I look around... no one is there. “What the he--”
Suddenly, the ceiling above me collapses. A mass of water falls from it, and consumes everything in its path.

Frantically scrambling to my feet from the floor, and staring down to see that I am still in my skydiving suit, which is now completely wet. My arms are hanging away from my body dripping with water. As I'm staring at my soaked clothing, I hear a loud laugh, and lift my head up to see the source.
The light shining in from a window helps me recognize a woman. Though, too be honest, I'm not entirely sure what she is, but with her bending over on her legs and arms wrapping around her stomach, she does have the body of a woman. But that is the least of my concerns.
“Who are you and what is so damn funny?”
After a moment of uncontrollable laughter, she snorts as she attempts to stand up and give me a straight face with her golden retinas looking right at me.
“I'm sorry,” she said whilst laughing. “My name is--” she tried to say, but broke off as another fit of giggles overtook her. Wiping a tear from her eye, she finally managed to say, “My name is Spitfire. And you looked utterly ridiculous when I dumped water on you.”
“Those ears... they're so big.” “Well no shit. What did you expect?”
“Hey!” she snaps. “Don't get snippy with me. I was only trying to wake your lazy flank up. Anything else I did was like banging my head against the wall.” She folds her slim yellow arms and raises an eyebrow. “As tempting as that was... I decided to not hurt a complete stranger.”
I roll roll my eyes, “Nobody asked you to wake me up in the first place. You could have just let me stay asleep.”
“You've been passed out on my bed for thelast day. I dragged you out here, and thought it was about time you make yourself useful.”
I raise a finger to retort, only to slowly lower it. “Wait... how long did you say I was out?”
“A day! And there are no free rides in this place, buddy.”
I sit down on the floor sullenly and glare at the wooden planks. “I... I can't believe this has happened. I was so close.”
“Wait... What are you talking about?”
I wave a hand nonchalantly. “It's not any of your concern. Besides, why do you care?”
There is a moment of silence. I feel her gaze upon me as if she trying to trying to figure out how to respond. It isn’t long until the silence is broken by the sound of creaks from the floorboards as sense her coming towards me. When she arrives, she sits down and wraps an arm around me. “Look, I apologize for the rude awakening, but I’m just as confused as you are. And I thought the only way I could get answers is by waking you up.”
I nod in understanding.
“Now I’m positive that you have a lot of questions, just as I do. So, would you like to start or shall I?”
Looking over to her, I find myself staring into her eyes; her concern and curiosity is obvious to me. Her facial features are unlike any human I’ve ever seen before. She has an equine shaped face that is covered in golden-yellow fur. Even with her strange features, she has an exotic, hypnotizing beauty that left me staring a bit longer than I should.
Realizing that she is giving me an odd look, I scratch my head awkwardly. “Oh, my bad. You can go ahead. I'm more curious to how I ended up here... wherever here is,” I say, finally looking around and noticing the rustic, log cabin style of the house.
“Sounds good to me,” she says with a gentle smile. “But how you got here is a little... complicated to explain.”
“Alright.” I return her smile. “Just give me the short version of what happened.”
She nods in approval. “Well... I was out flying in the middle of thunderstorm, and, for a split second, I saw something out of the corner of my eye. I looked down, and barely saw a body fall into the depths of some black clouds. I zoomed after it, thinking that Derpy had been struck by lightning... again.” She gives an exasperated sigh. “Anyway, I chased after the body, but with the strong wind and heavy rain, it made it very difficult to see who or what I was chasing after. That is, until I got closer and saw that it was you... completely unconscious.” With the arched eyebrow she gave me, it is apparent that I will have to explain how I got there, but... even I didn’t understand how it happened. She continues, “I didn’t know if you were alive or dead, but my conscious refused to let this random person meet their doom. So, I flew as fast as I could after you, and luckily, with enough willpower, I caught you and brought you back to my cabin.”
“...”
I’m silent for moment, letting the story roll through my mind. “Who is Derpy? Why was this woman out in the middle of a storm, and... flying?” It made no sense and is just flat out unbelievable to me, and yet from what I experienced before I got here was just as unreal as Spitfire. So I have no choice, but to believe her and ask, “So... you saved me?”
“Yeah, basically,” Spitfire says flatly.
“But... How are you even able to fly? Where I come from that's impossible.”
She smirks, gets up, and walks over in front me. I raise an eyebrow at her only for my eyes to widen suddenly in confusion, and I'll admit, jealousy.
An actual pair of feathered wings flap open from behind her. They’re wide in length and are the same color as her fur. They practically glowed in the sunlight, showing off their radiant beauty. While looking at her wings, I couldn’t help but check the rest of her out. She is wearing a thin... flight suit that is light blue, and has big lightning bolt going down the front her, including one on the side of her rear. It showed every curve of her tone, thin body. Including a pair, as a guess, B-size breast. By her form, she looks like an actual human, but her abnormal features made me think otherwise.
“Wh-what are you?”
“I’m a pegasus,” she says proudly.
My gears shut down. “But you have... uhm...” I make hand gestures from my chest.
She raises an eyebrow. “But I have... what?”
“Nevermind... ”
"Okay then," she replies doubtfully with an odd look. "So now it's my turn: How does somepony end up falling through the sky without wings?"
“I’m not a pony. I’m a human and yes, I don’t have wings, but I have a parachute that I wear when I skydive.”
“But I still don’t see how you ended up in the air. There couldn’t have been any airships in the area because of the storm.”
I sigh and tell her everything about my trip through the sky. She listens intently while staring at me with those mystical eyes of hers. At one point, I think I see glint of admiration on her face when I mention my desire to fly, but resorted to skydiving. It was apparent to me that she had the desire to fly as I did, but with her wings, she is able to experience more freedom from the restraints of gravity than I ever will.
After I finished, she looked out a window at the setting sun and remained quiet for a few minutes, probably thinking over my story in her head. From this angle, her hair catches my attention, and I notice how it's spiked back, fading from a light orange into a darker, flaming orange as it gets closer to the ends. Glancing down, I notice another bizarre feature about her; a long, elegant tail the same color as her hair swishing gracefully behind her. “That tail and fur of hers makes it obvious she isn’t human, but at the same time she has the body of a human... A very attractive and se...” My mind is going in the gutter.
She finally looks back to me, a sly smile spreading across her face. “So, you want to be able to fly, huh?”
I smile sheepishly at her question. “Yeah, you could say that.”
Her eyes seem to unfocus as she stares off into space and rubs her chin. “I think I might have something around here that can fix that...”
My heart skips a beat at the thought, but I question the possibility. The idea of something allowing me to fly like her seems too good to be true, but with the events that lead up to this point, anything is possible.
“You have something... that will let me fly?” I ask in disbelief.
“What, don’t believe me?” she asks, flashing me another grin. “Now, what did I do with it?” she begins to say as she turns and heads down the hall. “Last I remember seeing it is was when Soarin wanted to borrow it for Big Mac, but did he ever return it?”
Her words went unnoticed as I watched her walk away, momentarily getting lost in her swaying hips and flowing tail.
“You coming?”
Catching myself I blush and follow after her into what appears to be the central room of the cabin, watching her search the shelving for something.
Letting my eyes wander, I look around and find several interesting things. Many of the shelves are holding trophies, while hanging from the walls are ribbons and plaques, each one in gold or silver. Scattered amongst them are several framed photos of her and others like her, all dressed in the same blue jumpsuit with the yellow lightning bolt pattern on their chests. Curiosity getting the better of me, I point to the nearest picture, one where she's standing lined up with the others, posed with a proud look, and ask, “What ar--”
“Found it!” she calls out from behind me. Looking back to her, she's standing next to the fireplace holding a small armlet, bouncing lightly in place in apparent excitement.
“This thing can give anypony who wears it wings like a pegasus. I had it made as payment for a job I did some time ago,” she says as she walks over and shows it to me.
The armlet was simple enough: three curved, golden plates held together by low-profile hinges and a small but secure-looking clasp to keep it on. Engraved on the surface, spawning the entire width of it, was the design of wings, much like hers. Set in between the wings was a small, gold-colored jewel that seemed to glow on it's own.
“This is going to give me wings and let me fly?” I ask skeptically as I look at it. Sure, it looks nice and all, but I had never been one to believe in magic. But then again, I was beginning to question many of my own beliefs at this point.
“Yep!” she answers happily, smiling at me expectantly.
After an awkward silence, I clear my throat and ask, “Uh, yes?”
“Argh! Just put it on already! Actually, just hold still, I'll put it on for you.” I try to decline her offer, but without waiting, she grabs my arm and pulls me closer, wrapping the armlet around my left wrist and snapping it closed.
“Okay, this might feel a little weird, but this is so cool too,” she says as she steps back and stares at me.
The first thing I notice is that the armlet is actually loose on me, making me question how well it would stay on. As I start to mention my concern, I feel a strange tingling sensation in my wrist and stop, my attention locked on the armlet.
With a golden glow to match it's color, the armlet shrinks down to a comfortably snug fit on my wrist. A moment later, the same tingling sensation travels up my arm and to my back. The sensation reminds me of a mixture between the chills I get thinking of a jump, and the rush I get when actually doing so.
Another glow shines from behind me and I look up to her, finding that she's grinning madly and looking just past me.
I try to twist and see what she's looking at, and suddenly notice a new weight on my back. Looking behind me I see feathery white wing idly resting behind me. Quickly looking to the other side,I find a second wing; a perfect set. For a moment I hold my breath and look to her, my eyes growing wide.
“This... is... AWESOME!” With my words I feel both wings flare out, mirroring my excitement.
Without a thought, I rush forward and pull her into a tight hug, invoking a surprise gasp from her. After a moment, I feel her relax in my arms and return the hug carefully.
Returning to my senses, I realize that I just hugged a complete stranger. I release her and try to step back, nearly throwing us both off balance, as she hadn't quite released me yet. With both of us blushing furiously, I scratch my head and chuckle nervously. “Sorry 'bout that.”
She smiles sheepishly and looks off the the side, holding her arms. “Ah, it's okay. Don't worry about it.”
After another awkward pause where we both look everywhere but at each other, she suddenly perks up. “So! Shall we give those wings a test?” she asks, flashing me a sly smile.
The very thought makes my heart jump and race. “I'd love to! But... I've never flown with wings before. Not like these, anyway.”
She walks past me, placing a hand on my shoulder, and guides me along. “I'll just have to give you a crash course then, won’t I? I'll teach you the same way I learned.” She leads me outside, and I find that we're standing on a patio facing off a mountain side. I quickly became painfully aware of the fact that we were very high up, and the patio had a disturbing lack of railing around the edges.
“Just how did you learn?” I ask, becoming nervous and slightly suspicious.
We came to a stop on the edge, and she turns to face me. “Why, trial and error, of course,” she answers with a happy smile.
Before I have time to answer, let alone process what she just said to me, she quickly steps behind me and shoves my back, sending me over the edge and causing me to falling rapidly.
The first cognitive thing through my mind was “Oh shiiit!” followed up quickly by the ironic fact that this was the second time this week that I was plummeting to my imminent demise.
“Spread your wings!”
I twist and find her diving behind me, slightly off to the side, her wings held close.
“How?! Did you forget that I have never had wings before?!” I scream back, my voice breaking in a way that causes her to giggle.
“The armlet gives you the innate knowledge to use them. They will act as you wish, as soon as you stop panicking and focus,” she replies in a matter-of-fact tone as she crosses her arms, like she has given the same speech before.
I shake my head at her refusal to help. I look back down and see the mountain's base quickly coming up to greet me. Exhaling, I close my eyes and try to relax, just like I was taught for skydiving. As I begin to feel calmer, I open my eyes and simply want my wings to spread, to tilt, to pull me out of my fall.
I suddenly become aware of the feelings in my wings, and feel them spread out behind me, following my simple desire and pulling me out of my free fall into a gradual but rapid glide.
“Yeah! I told you you can do it! Now, lets see you actually fly.” With a burst of speed, she suddenly shoots past overheard, her wings beating elegantly to give her more speed.
Watching how her wings move, I think of the patterns and feel my wings mirror them. Within seconds, I've caught up to her as she flies lazily along. “So, what do you think?” she asks as she turns sideways, a maneuver that I don't even dare attempt.
For a moment, I get lost in the beauty of her form, her grace and elegance as she flies along seemingly without effort. I catch a sly smile on her face and shake my head. “I like,” I answer simply, still somewhat dazed.
She laughs and beats her wings stronger, lifting herself higher into the air.
“So, why do you have this thing anyway? You already have wings and all, what use would this be to you?” I ask, catching up next to her.
For a moment, a look I can only describe as bittersweet crosses her face before she smiles and answers. “I once had a fling with an Earth Pony stallion.”
“An... Earth pony?” I ask.
“Oh... right, basically, those are ponies that can't fly,” She states. “So, as you can tell, my cabin isn't exactly accessible to non-pegasi normally, so I had it made so he could visit me at my place.”
“Ah. What happened to him?” I ask, feeling curious.
“I decided to pay him a surprise visit one day in Canterlot where he lived. I overheard him speaking with his friends, bragging about how I was his mare. I didn't say anything then, but the next time we went flying I broke up with him, taking my armlet back mid-flight,” she answers with a shrug.
A chill runs down my spine at the thought of her 'break-up'. Apparently, she noticed as she smiles at me and continues. “Don't worry, we were flying over the ocean. A fishing boat picked him up and took him home.”
For a moment we fly in silence, and I notice her cabin off in the distance. Feeling playful I beat my wings harder, pushing myself ahead of her allowing me to finally look back at her. “Race to the cabin?” I ask, grinning mischievously.
She returns my smile and I feel a another chill course through me. “Think you can keep up?” With a rapid beat of her wings she suddenly shoots past me, becoming a blue and yellowish-orange blur ahead of me.
Holy shit!
Beating my wings as rapidly as possible, I try to catch up, but as I watch she easily makes it almost all the way back to her cabin and turns back, speeding right back to me. “I thought we were racing! Did you fall asleep or something?”
I shoot her an evil glare and push harder.
As we approach her cabin, she has taken up flying just ahead of me, making an obvious show of just how easily she can fly at these speeds.
About ten feet from her patio, knowing there was no way for me to possibly win fairly, I give one final beat and fold my wings, reaching out and grabbing her around the waist as we cross over the patio's edge.
Caught off guard by the sudden added weight, she screams in surprise as we crash to the floor, tumbling through the open doors into her living room.
As we laid there, breathing heavily and staring at the ceiling she swings her arm sideways, hitting me in the ribs. “That was cheating!” she says pointedly, before bursting into a fit of giggles.
