Spes est numquam abiit

Time seemed to stop, almost immediately after seeing those element carriers enter the throne room. Last time Sombra was blasted into this Eather he returned to the living world months, even years since his banishment. The memories of Twilight and that wretched dragon were still fresh, seeming every defeat was hours apart.

That was the king’s existence, ever since the Two Sisters, only failure.

“How could this happen…” The dark unicorn growled at nothing. “Again!?”

Almost nothing was visible, the only certainty the dark king had that let him know he was dead, was the floor under his hooves he did not feel. Staring at the floor was all there was, waiting for the expected light. It was embarrassing, and worrying.

No pony was around to stare, but the feeling of weakness was enough to spark something in Sombra’s heart. Muscle and fur melted away with that colorful blast. The thick silk cape and polished gorget burned, cracked, and ruined beyond repair.

“Just can’t stay away.” The light smiled at the dark king, a kind of smug and playful look.

Sombra dipped his head, avoiding that face. He ignored the comment and grunted, beginning to see where this discussion might be going, and dreaded it.

“I was so close.” He took a deep breath, “How could I have known they did not need the Elements.”

“Something you actually didn’t know, imagine that.” The purple unicorn mare emphasized her mocking tone. “Guess you’re not as good as you say.”

This made the prideful stallion freeze, locking his glare on the pony in front of him.
“I’m not playing games Hope.”

Hope smirks, “I remember you saying that was impossible to be defeated,” She lifts a hoof up, mimicking Sombra’s growling voice, “I’m the most powerful sorcerer in the world!”

Still so playful, however this was not the time to be amused.

“I know… I just need one more chance.” He relaxed, letting his grumblings pass through his fangs.

Radiant’s expression faded to a serious stare, “I’ve heard this before.”

“But this time it’s true!” The panic came back, “I can finally win!”
But Radiant only shook her head slowly, being silent for a moment while Sombra went on.

“I was so close last time; I can do it!”
His eyes showed desperation as, Radiant’s own expression, was disappointment. She met his gaze, seeing in his eyes the sparkle from the aura that surrounded them both. Pleading, and all so confident. As he was a thousand years ago, after that fateful day the two of them gazed into the Crystal Heart.

Letting out a sigh, she straightened her posture. “Promise?”

Sombra relaxed some, feeling his heart slow to normal. “I promise.”

Radiant let a faint grin show, still amused at his determination.
“You know I can get in trouble for this.”
She charged her horn with the blue light, the light that used to sooth pain for whoever saw it.
“Just remember; This is the last time.”

The deep gray unicorn felt the warm light spiral around his once obliterated body, and felt all his senses return as when he was alive. His bones covered with muscle again, and the cracked steel and burn cape reformed as new.

After a thousand years, it was time for a true victory. A new plan, and a new life, this time was going to be different. Just one more chance, and they will be together forever.

Sombra looked directly into the crystal blue eyes of his beloved.

“It’s all I need.”
