Ranger in Equestria
Unspoken Feelings and Looming Threats
Previous ChapterWithin the gleaming walls of the Crystal Empire, a palpable tension hung in the air. Twilight and her friends had managed to bring Tommy to safety, but his wounds served as a grim reminder of the formidable foe they now faced.
As Cadance tended to Tommy's injury in the castles infirmary, the others gathered just outside of the infirmary, their expressions a mix of concern and determination.
"Alright girls," Twilight said, her eyes reflecting the urgency of their situation. "We need a plan."
Rainbow Dash hovered above the others, her wings flapping with barely concealed restlessness. "We need to go out there and kick Sombra's butt!"
"That's not a plan, that’s an action," Rarity interjected, her gaze focused on a map of the empire spread out on the table before them.
"Well, it's better than just sitting here doing nothing!" Rainbow Dash retorted, her face flushing with annoyance.
“Is this…too much for us?” Rarity said with worry.
Fluttershy spoke up softly, her voice barely above a whisper, "We've faced difficult challenges before. We can't lose hope now."
Pinkie Pie's hair seemed to deflate slightly at the overall mood in the room, but she nodded in agreement. "Flutters is right! We've faced off against Nightmare Moon, Discord, and all sorts of baddies. We can handle Sombra!"
"But we're down a teammate," Applejack pointed out pragmatically, her eyes darting to the door that led to the infirmary. "Tommy ain't exactly in fightin' shape."
"We may be down a teammate, but we aren't out of the fight," Twilight asserted, her gaze as strong as her words were determined. "We have each other."
As they continued their strategizing, Cadance emerged from the infirmary, her face pale but calm. She joined the others with a troubled expression on her face.
"How's Tommy?" Rainbow Dash immediately asked, her eyes wide with concern.
"Tommy is currently stable," Cadance responded, her voice strained as she tried to keep it steady. "However, the wound is contaminated with Sombra's dark magic. I've slowed its progression, but I'm not sure how long that will last. If I could access my magic, I could heal him, but I'm using all of my power to maintain the barrier. Time is running out."
"Dark magic is in his wound?" Twilight asked, her eyebrows furrowing in concern. "That's... not good."
Rarity's voice was filled with hope as she turned to Twilight. "Is there anything you can do, Twilight?"
Twilight paused, her thoughts racing as she contemplated the gravity of the situation. "I could possibly neutralize the dark magic, but I'm still recovering and it's a very complex process. There's a risk that it could backfire and make things even worse."
"We can't take that chance," Cadance interjected firmly, her eyes filled with sadness. "We just have to trust in my barrier and hope that Tommy will recover."
A heavy silence fell upon them as the gravity of their situation settled in. Every one of them shared worried glances, the tension clearly visible on their faces.
Tommy groaned and sweat dripped from his forehead as he muttered, "Ugh... Twilight."
Twilight walked into the Infirmary to find Tommy lying in bed, his skin ghostly under the bright lights. He tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness forced him back down.
"Take it easy, Tommy. You need to rest," Twilight said softly, walking over to his bedside and placing a comforting hand on his.
"I-I can't... rest," Tommy stammered weakly. "Sombra…he's coming."
"You're not in any condition to be moving," Twilight scolded gently, noticing darkened veins on the edges of his bandages.
“But…” Tommy started to say, but Twilight cut him off with a kiss.
Twilight pulled back and gave the ranger a sweet smile. “Please, just rest,” she said softly as she helped him lie back down. “My friends and I can handle this. It's what we do best.”
Tommy managed to muster a weak smile and gently caressed her cheek. “I love you,” he whispered as clearly as he could.
“I love you too,” Twilight replied, grasping his hand in hers.
The moment hung in the air for a few more seconds before Tommy's eyes finally closed and his breathing slowed. Twilight sat there for a while, watching him sleep until the sound of footsteps outside broke her reverie. With one last glance at Tommy, she stood up and left the infirmary.
Outside, a faint chill hung in the air and the distant throb of dark magic could be felt. The others were gathered there, their faces etched with worry and determination.
"Twilight," Applejack called out, her hat pulled low over her eyes. "We got a plan?"
Twilight glanced at her friends before looking towards the dark clouds brewing on the horizon. She took a deep breath and made a decision.
"I'll start once I've done some research," Twilight said, turning to Cadance. "Cadance, could you show me to the castle's library?"
"Of course, Twilight," Cadance replied wearily but with composure. She motioned for Twilight to follow as they navigated through the twists and turns of the castle's corridors until they arrived at the grand wooden doors of the library.
As they pushed open the double doors, a musty scent filled their nostrils, a testament to the age and wisdom of the lost empire. Books towered high, their spines filled with ancient knowledge and forgotten history.
Under the soft glow of the chandelier, Twilight scanned the room with a sharp eye. “Shining Armor once told me that the sword was Equestria’s greatest weapon” Twilight mused aloud, her eyes flitting across the room. "But I believe knowledge is our greatest weapon."
Cadance nodded in agreement, her gaze following Twilight as she ventured deeper into the room. The princess of love watched silently as Twilight scanned book upon book, her brow furrowing in concentration.
"Just give me a little while, Cadance," Twilight said, focusing her magic to lift a stack of books onto the large table in the center of the room. She winced as a brief twinge of pain shot through her head. "I'll find a way to defeat Sombra."
"Of course," Cadance said softly, squeezing Twilight’s shoulder in reassurance before leaving the library. She shut the door gently behind her, leaving Twilight alone in the dimly lit library.
Cadance approached her sister-in-law, Twilight, with a look of concern etched on her face. "Twilight, is everything okay?" she asked, her voice laced with worry.
With a reassuring smile, Twilight admitted, "I had an accident earlier." She hesitated before continuing, "I experienced a severe case of Magic Overload."
"Magic Overload?!" Cadance exclaimed in shock, her eyes widening in alarm. "That can be dangerous! How did it happen?"
"Do you remember when the Canterlot was under attack?" Twilight asked, receiving a nod of confirmation from Cadance. "Afterwards, Tommy's power coin was broken and with Celestia's help, I gathered magic-boosting crystals to try and fix it. However, the concentration of magic was too powerful and triggered an overload."
"Twilight, you know that Magic Overload can have lasting effects," Twilight's friend cautioned, her face filled with concern. "It's a miracle you're still able to use magic."
Twilight nodded, her eyes serious. "I know, Cadance. The doctors said it was a miracle I managed to survive and still retain my magical abilities.” Twilight said, her gaze shifting back to the towering bookshelves, “But I couldn't just do nothing. Tommy was fighting a monster without his powers and I had to try and do something."
Cadance watched her for a moment longer, before sighing and giving a small nod. “Just promise me you'll be careful, Twilight.” the Princess of Love said before spotting a ring around Twilight’s finger. “Oh…and what do we have here?”
Twilight blushed as Cadance gently lifted her hand for a closer inspection of the ring, the golden band adorned with a beautiful purple diamond that was set perfectly in the center. "Oh, this is... uh..." Twilight stammered, her cheeks turning a deeper shade of crimson.
Cadance raised an eyebrow, her lips formed a smile Twilight was very familiar with. “So who’s the lucky colt that managed to pull you away from your books?” The Princess of Love teased, a mischievous sparkle in her eyes.
"Actually..." Twilight's blush deepened even more. "It's not a colt."
“Let me guess” Cadance grinned, leaning in closer. “Does this ‘Not-a-colt’ have Wavy brown hair, Deep brown eyes, and wears a…Sharp-looking green suit of armor?”
Twilight's eyes widened in surprise. "How did you...?"
"Twilight, I’m the Princess of Love and it wasn't exactly hard to guess.” Cadance simply chuckled, her eyes sparkling with mirth. “There's only one person you'd risk Magic Overload for."
She released Twilight's hand, her gaze becoming serious again. “I’m happy for you, but…have you told your brother about this?”
“Absolutely Not!” Twilight replied quickly, her blush fading into a pale hue of worry. "Shining Armor still thinks I'm his little sister who spends all her time buried in books. He'll overreact if he knows I'm... involved with someone."
Cadance shrugged lightly, her eyes softening with understanding. "Twilight, your brother won’t over react”
“Did he tell you what he did to the last colt that broke my heart?” Twilight countered, anxiety threading through her voice.
Cadance pursed her lips, recalling the unfortunate incident involving a certain blue-eyed pegasus and a magical containment field.
"Alright," she conceded. "He did go a little overboard that time.”
“A little?” Twilight echoed, casting Cadance an incredulous look. “He trapped Stalwart Banner in a magical bubble for three days straight!"
Cadance winced, rubbing the back of her head sheepishly. "That is... certainly an excessive response," she admitted. "But Shining Armor did that because he cares about you, Twilight. He won't react that way towards every individual you're involved with”
Twilight just gave her Sister-in-Law a look of disbelief, a thin eyebrow arching skeptically. "Really, Cadance? You think Shining Armor won't..." She let the rest of her sentence trail off into a groan of frustration, pressing a hand to her forehead. "I’m going to start my research"
Cadance reached over, laying a gentle hand on Twilight's shoulder. “Just don’t overuse your magic”
Twilight nodded, a quiet sigh escaping her lips. "I'll try," she promised, though the uncertainty in her eyes made it clear she wasn't convinced that she could.
Twilight sat quietly, the only sound that echoed was the soft thud of books as she placed them on the table. Her eyes darted across texts, skimming through books and ancient records, looking for anything that might help in the battle against Sombra.
As Cadance left, the Alicorn came across Twilight’s Friends.
"Is she okay?" Fluttershy asked, her soft eyes filled with concern.
"She's determined," Cadance answered. "We should be too."
Applejack nodded, adjusting her hat firmly on her head. "So, what do we need to do in this situation?"
Cadance let out a heavy sigh, a sense of responsibility weighing heavily on her shoulders. "I'm using all my energy to maintain the spell," Cadance explained to the group. "Shining Armor has been occupied with keeping watch for any signs of danger and exploring the frozen northern regions," the Princess of Love continued, her voice remaining strong despite the troubling news. "We've both been busy and haven't had much time to gather information from the Crystal Ponies."
“Crystal Ponies!” Rarity exclaimed, her eyes lighting up in excitement only to stop when her friends gave her a look. "Oh, right," she murmured, deflating slightly. “Please continue”
“It’s possible one of them knows how we can protect the Empire without having to drain my magic” Cadance continued, her gaze serious and determined. "But we need to approach them with caution and respect their fears. They have been through a lot, and we can't just pressure them into giving us the information."
“Then we’ll split up,” Rainbow suggested. “That way, we can cover more ground.”
“Thank you all” Cadance nodded, a hint of a smile on her lips. "Just do keep in mind their state of mind, these are ponies who have been enslaved by Sombra so some of them might still be under his influence. Be patient."
Twilight's friends agreed to the plan and started preparing to divide the work among themselves.
As they all left, Cadance felt her balance weaken as she back up against the closest wall, her breath heavy as she did all she could to hide just how great a burden she was under protecting the empire and keeping Sombra at bay.
“Time…” Cadance whispered to herself, her voice barely audible. "I need more time."
The two of them walked through the bustling streets of the Crystal Empire, their eyes scanning for any pony who might be willing to talk. The city was a paradox - its beauty was breathtaking, with tall, shimmering towers and opulent facades sparkling in the frosty sunlight. However, beneath the surface, the city remained shadowed by Sombra's lingering influence. Eyes skirting the ground, voices barely above a whisper, the Crystal Ponies moved about with an air of quiet despair.
“This place is absolutely marvelous!” Rarity beamed as her eyes sparkled with wonder. “So grand! So beautiful! My mind is running with dozens of fashion designs for a new line of crystallized clothing!”
"But we're here for information, remember?" Fluttershy reminded gently, her soft voice carrying a note of worry. "We need to find out how to protect the empire."
Rarity flicked her tail, smiling sheepishly. "Right, of course," she said, looking apologetic. “All though with a name like Crystal Ponies I expected there coats to be more…Crystal”
“Um…Rarity? I don’t think these ponies care about how they look, considering their current predicament,” Fluttershy spoke.
Rarity blinked. "Of course, Fluttershy," she said, nodding. "I'm letting my own interests distract me."
“How are you so invested in the Crystal Empire?” Fluttershy wondered. “We didn’t even know it existed before today.”
“Fluttershy I am a Fashionista” Rarity answered with a touch of indignation. "Newness is the lifeblood of fashion. And darling, this place, its history, its crystals, its ponies - they're all new. It's a gold mine of inspiration!"
"Still..." Fluttershy mumbled, looking down at her hooves. "I hope we
“I see…” Fluttershy answered. “Do you think…Tommy will be ok?”
Rarity paused, her expression taking on a more somber tone. "Tommy is a strong man," she said, "And he has a heart full of courage. I believe he'll be just fine."
“But he’s never been poisoned” Fluttershy interjected, her voice carrying a touch of anxiety. “What if he doesn’t recover from Sombra’s Dark Magic?”
"Fluttershy!" Rarity gripped Fluttershy's shoulder and stared into her eyes. "Tommy is perhaps the strongest and resilient man I have ever had the pleasure knowing! No matter what obstacles he is facing he always finds a way through it. Tommy will find a way to pull through as well."
“I hope so too,” Fluttershy said with a hopeful smile. “It’s just…I have a confession to make, Rarity.”
“You have Feelings for Tommy, don’t you?” Rarity guessed, her gaze softening as she continued to hold Fluttershy’s shoulder.
A bright pink blush coloured Fluttershy's cheeks and she looked down at her hooves again, whispering, "Yes... I do."
Rarity smiled and wrapped her arm around her friend. “When did you know you loved him?”
“A few weeks after he fought against the bone monster” Fluttershy answered, her voice soft and filled with reminiscence. “Whenever he talked to me…He…he spoke with such compassion…such kindness...such understanding," she continued. "I didn't realize it at first, but every time he was around, I felt... happier, safer."
“And you’ve been suppressing your feelings this whole time?” Rarity asked. “Darling, why would you do that?”
“Because he has Twilight,” Fluttershy answered. “And they’re engaged. How could I confess to him if they’re so involved with each other?”
Rarity’s face softened at Fluttershy's words. She knew the pain of unrequited love all too well. "I understand your predicament, darling," she said gently. "But living with such a secret can be burdensome."
“Then what do I do?” Fluttershy asked on the verge of tears.
“You tell him how you feel” Rarity answered, meeting Fluttershy's gaze with a resolute one of her own. "You have to. For your sake and his."
“But... what if he rejects me, Rarity?” Fluttershy trembled at the thought, her eyes shining with unshed tears.
“Fluttershy. Can you honestly say that knowing who he is?” Rarity countered.
Fluttershy shook her head, her mane falling in a veil over her face. "No," she confessed, "but what if it changes things between us?"
Rarity gave a gentle squeeze to Fluttershy's shoulder. "Life is full of 'what ifs', darling," she said softly. "We cannot let them dictate our actions.
Fluttershy nodded and hugged her friend. “Thank you, Rarity. I think…I think you gave me the courage I needed.”
Rarity smiled warmly, pulling back just enough to meet Fluttershy's eyes. "Good," she said, her voice steady and reassuring. "Just remember, darling, no matter what happens, we're here for you."
Fluttershy managed a weak smile in return. "I...I think I'm going to tell him after we get back to ponyville”
Sombra's cry of frustration echoed through the air as he slammed into the unyielding magical barrier surrounding his empire. The dark form he had taken was no match for the powerful shield, and he was forced to return to his physical body. Exhausted and seething with rage, he stood outside the barrier, panting heavily.
"You cannot maintain this barrier forever," Sombra growled, pressing a hand against the shimmering force field. "I will break through eventually and reclaim my throne."
"If that is your only goal," a voice spoke through the raging blizzard, causing Sombra to whirl around. "Then you are a fool beyond measure."
"How dare you speak to me in such a manner?" King Sombra spat with anger. "Reveal yourself!"
"Why should I?" the voice taunted. "I find great entertainment in watching you struggle helplessly like a rat in a cage."
"I am King Sombra, ruler of the Crystal Empire," Sombra seethed, clenching his fists as black tendrils of magic writhed around him. "You will regret your insolence!" he roared into the howling void.
"Is that all you are?" a figure emerged from the blinding snowstorm, its features obscured by shadow.

“You…” Sombra hissed, his voice seething with anger and suspicion. “That armor…is similar to the brat I faced! You’re working with him?!”
“Do not associate me with that fool,” Drakkon retorted, his words sharp and cutting like a knife. He stepped forward, emerging from the blinding snow, revealing his formidable form. His armor gleamed in the dim light, its dark color adorned with ominous spikes and angular designs, a stark contrast to the frozen landscape surrounding them.
Sombra scoffed in disbelief, his tone dripping with disdain. "So you believe yourself to be superior to him, do you?" His eyes narrowed as he sized up her opponent, looking for any weaknesses in his intimidating presence.
“Unlike him, I don’t waste my power protecting the weak” Drakkon answered, a cruel smirk playing on his lips. He raised a hand, dark magic swirling around it - a stark contrast to the pristine whiteness of the snowfall. "I use it to crush them."
“I like your style,” Sombra said, his tone changing to some kind of sick admiration. “It appears we have a common enemy.”
“Indeed,” Drakkon responded, his gaze unwavering. “But let’s not mistake ourselves for allies. Our goals merely align – for now.”
Sombra's face twisted into a scowl as his eyes flickered warily towards the new arrival. Drakkon's words had struck a chord of unease within him, but he couldn't deny that the man made a valid point. He may not trust this newcomer, but he was no fool.
"What do you propose then?" Sombra asked gruffly, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
"An alliance of convenience," Drakkon suggested nonchalantly, as if discussing something as mundane as the weather. "We keep out of each other's way and focus our efforts on getting rid of that nuisance while also obtaining what we both desire."
Sombra's suspicion only deepened at the offer. "And what guarantee do I have that you won't betray me?"
Drakkon's lips curved into a sly grin under his helmet. "You don't have one. But really, what other choice do you have?"
Sombra scoffed at the weak attempt to intimidate him, as the frigid wind whipped his dark hair into his face. His powerful magic swirled around him, casting menacing shadows in the glow of the blizzard. "I could easily tear you apart," he growled.
But Drakkon only laughed, a chilling sound that echoed through the air. "I've been threatened before," he said with a smirk. Before Sombra could react, Drakkon had unsheathed his sword and pressed it against his throat. "And those were usually their last words," he added with a sinister tone.
Sombra snarled, "It seems we have reached an impasse."
"Allow me to simplify things for you," Drakkon replied, sheathing his sword. "I will help you get inside, I will get what I want, and you will get what you want. We won't stand in each other's way."
Sombra gazed at Drakkon, his fiery eyes showing signs of hesitation. He detested the thought of working alongside someone he couldn't rely on, but deep down, he acknowledged that Drakkon had a valid argument.
"Fine," he conceded with reluctance, "We will form an alliance out of convenience."
