What's a 'French Kiss'?
Rainbow Dash, Part One
Previous ChapterAs Anon ambles through the bustling streets of Ponyville on an ordinary day of fall, the town is blooming with activity. The colourful ponies around him engage in lively chatter and merriment, their conversations blending with the gentle hum of the town. The quaint pastel-hued buildings and vibrant blossoms that line the cobblestone streets create a picturesque scene for everypony to enjoy.
In the distance, the town square comes into view, adorned with a burst of festivity. Banners sway in the breeze, and the scent of delectable treats wafts through the air from the various food stalls. The atmosphere is one of sheer delight, and Anon finds themselves drawn towards the new addition to Ponyville.
"So this is what Ponyville's fairs look like?" Anon muses to themselves as they approach the lively scene. "I must say, they really know how to uphold their culture. I wonder if Applejack had anything to do with this...?"
As Anon navigates through the cheerful crowd, ponies of all sorts can be seen reveling in the festivities. Laughter fills the air, and the mood is infectious. Anon's curiosity leads them to a stall renowned for its exceptional apple cider.
"Huh. It seems she might have been involved after all," Anon reflects, glancing around in search of the orange-coated earth pony. "I wonder where she's at, anyway."
Just then, a faint, enthusiastic voice carries from above. "Well yeah, obviously! Who else makes stuff like this? It's the best!" Anon looks up to see a cloud hovering overhead, with a vibrant rainbow tail trailing behind it.
The source of the voice leans over the cloud, revealing herself to be none other than Rainbow Dash. Her cerulean coat gleams in the sunlight, and her magenta eyes shimmer with a playful glint. Her rainbow-coloured mane and tail stand out like a work of art, mirroring the vivid hues of the fair's decorations.
"Hey, what are you doing here, anyway?" Rainbow Dash calls down to Anon, her voice tinged with a blend of curiosity and playfulness. "I thought you were hanging out with Twilight or something?"
Anon chuckles to himself and replies, "Well... I was. She got quite busy, so I decided to leave her alone for a while. Something about a 'Princess Cadance?'" He shrugs casually, then looks back at Rainbow Dash with curiosity. "What about you? Why are you here?"
Rainbow Dash's expression transforms from slight offence to enthusiastic determination as she responds, her voice slightly raised, "Why am I here?! Look around! This is like, the best time of the year! Nothing but the best apple cider in Equestria, everypony's too busy cleaning up leaves to disturb me... What's not to like?" Anon can't help but be amused by her explanation.
"Didn't you say summer was your favourite season? And... spring, at some point, I swear-" Anon begins, but Rainbow Dash interrupts him, her voice carrying a sense of urgency.
"That's not the point! This is different. We always do a huge run in fall, called the Running of the Leaves, to make sure they come down properly. I've really got my work cut out for me if I'm to beat my score from last year." As Rainbow Dash explains, her wings twitch with anticipation, ready for the challenge that lies ahead.
Anon raises an eyebrow and questions Rainbow Dash, his interest piqued by her choice of words. "A race? That doesn't sound too fair if you've got wings to use."
Rainbow Dash responds with a touch of disdain for the rules in place. "Yeah... they kinda thought about that one. Turns out using wings 'defeats the point' or something, so we've all gotta have 'em tied up instead." She strikes a confident pose, her smile radiant. "Not that it matters! There's no way I'm losing this year!"
Anon takes a moment to consider this information, occasionally glancing up at Rainbow Dash, who seems puzzled by his contemplative demeanor. After a brief pause, he returns his gaze to her and asks, "Say, Rainbow Dash... Officially speaking, what happens in the situation one were to, I don't know... break the rules?"
Rainbow Dash gains an almost immediate frustration as she exclaims, "That wasn't my fault! Applejack-!" She abruptly stops herself when she realizes that curious onlookers have taken an interest in their conversation. With a nervous chuckle, she continues in a lower tone, "...Anyway, if a pony breaks the rules in the run, it's seen as an automatic forfeit. Usually. Just makes sure ponies don't go around 'ruining the fun for everypony,'" she adds, gesturing with a hoof to emphasize the eccentricity of the race officials.
Anon appears more satisfied with this information and responds playfully, "So hypothetically speaking, in the situation two people were to agree to a reward of some kind for the winner of a similar kind of race, breaking the rules would count as an automatic forfeit?"
Rainbow Dash appears somewhat perplexed by the phrasing but replies nonetheless, "Uh... sure, I guess? Something like that."
With a slight nod, Anon heads over to a nearby apple cider stand, takes one, and returns to Rainbow Dash, exuding an air of confidence as he takes a small sip. Rainbow Dash, growing increasingly bewildered, can't help but ask, "...Why are you asking? Are you gonna be in this year's fall run? Because I'll be honest, seeing a human run would be pretty hilarious."
Anon takes a few more moments before lowering the apple cider glass and replying with a grin, "I'll have you know, Rainbow Dash, I'm quite the runner. Maybe even good enough to beat you."
Rainbow Dash immediately perceives this as a challenge and exclaims, "Woah, woah, woah! There's no way you're actually being serious, right?" She eyes Anon with a mixture of surprise and defiance.
Anon, maintaining a silent, smug smile, doesn't back down. Rainbow Dash's competitive spirit ignited, she continues, "Don't look at me like that! Nopony challenges Rainbow Dash to a race and gets away with it!"
Anon, feigning a concerned expression, replies, "Come now, Rainbow Dash. I was simply making a joke."
Rainbow Dash shakes her head vigorously a few times, before insisting, "Yeah, it better have been!"
Rolling his eyes, Anon can't resist whispering to himself, "A joke at how slow you are," followed by a quiet chuckle. Rainbow Dash's competitive fervour reaches its peak, and she leaps from her cloud, landing squarely in front of Anon with determination in her magenta eyes.
"Alright, that's it! At the race track, right now!" she declares.
Anon gives her a good-natured look and says, "Whatever you say, 'Dashie'."
The two of them make their way to the starting point of the Running of the Leaves track. The surroundings are adorned with brown trees shedding their leaves, creating a beautiful seasonal scene. The fallen leaves blanket the ground, forming a colourful mosaic. The track stretches out before them, a wide open field, inviting them to put their speed and determination to the test.
Rainbow Dash wears a grumpy expression as she shoots distasteful glances at Anon. Meanwhile, Anon seems rather pleased with himself, having successfully provoked the competitive spirit of the pegasus.
As Anon and Rainbow Dash approach the starting line, it appears entirely empty, offering a surprisingly calm contrast to the bustling fair they left behind. The track is simple, with just the starting line marked by a chalked line on the ground. It may be bare, but it serves as an effective beginning for their impromptu race.
Rainbow Dash turns to Anon with a stern expression, her magenta eyes locked onto his. "You'd better not try to chicken out now. We're racing, and that's final."
Anon responds confidently, a playful gleam in his eyes. "Well, that was the plan. Why would I give up on a free win?" Unsurprisingly, Rainbow Dash seems even more infuriated than before, choosing to remain silent until they both stand before the starting line.
Once they arrive, Rainbow Dash taps her hoof onto the line and then points forward at the stretch of trees that lies ahead. She explains the race's rules, her voice determined. "We start here, and keep going until we reach the other side. The rules are that neither of us can fly, leave the track, or say anything until the race is done."
Anon offers a light-hearted reply, teasing her, "Something tells me you made that last one up."
Rainbow Dash sighs, her confidence returning as she says, "If I lose something, so do you. Sounds fair to me."
Rainbow Dash positions herself at the start, her hoof grazing along the dirt. "I don't have all day! Let's get this over with already!" she insists.
Anon, however, gives a mischievous response, drawing out the anticipation. "Without anything to race for? Doesn't sound very fun to me, Rainbow."
Rainbow Dash appears momentarily confused before turning to face Anon. She presents her offer, her eyes sparkling with determination. "You know what? Just for wasting my time, I'll take you up on that. If I win, you'll do everything I say for the whole of tomorrow. I could do with a day off."
She shows no hint of doubt, and a few moments pass as Anon contemplates her proposition. Rainbow Dash continues, her confidence unwavering. "If it were me, I wouldn't even bother asking for anything. There's no world where you can beat me, Anon."
Anon, with a smug expression, reveals his counteroffer. "A kiss."
Rainbow Dash's eyes widen in surprise, and she shakes her head in disbelief. "A what now?"
Anon, undeterred, elaborates with a sly grin. "You heard me. A kiss. If you're so confident, that shouldn't mean anything anyway, right?"
Rainbow Dash is rendered momentarily speechless by the unexpected request. Anon, on the other hand, seems emboldened by the turn of events. He continues, his tone slightly playful, "In fact, let's make it worthwhile, seeing as an entire day is quite the ask. A French kiss. I'm sure you know what one of those is, don't you?"
As Rainbow Dash remains her determined self, Anon continues to tease her, his tone playfully mocking. "Oh, is Rainbow Dash afraid of losing? 'If it were me, I wouldn't even bother-'"
Rainbow Dash's patience wears thin, and she cuts him off with a shout, "Fine! I don't care about your stupid French kiss, whatever it is. This has gone on for way too long. Get over here and race me, already!" Her competitive spirit overrides any doubts she may have had.
Anon, feeling that he's achieved his goal, gives a nonchalant response, "If you say so," before walking to her side.
Once they're both in position at the starting line, he turns to face her, adding with a hint of mischief, "Oh, and you don't have to tie up your wings or anything. I trust you'll keep to the rules." He punctuates his words with a sly wink. Rainbow Dash appears momentarily distracted by the comment, but she quickly refocuses on the track stretching out before them. She assumes a running stance, her body poised for the race.
Rainbow Dash then glances down at a horseshoe below them and says, "Once this hits the ground, we'll start." With that, she strikes her hoof against the ground, sending the horseshoe flying into the air. She swiftly returns to her original stance, her eyes fixed ahead, waiting for the horseshoe to clank back to the ground, signaling the start of their race. As moments pass by, the suspense builds between them as they await what happens next.
Author's Note
Admittedly, this one may be a slight stretch in terms of character representation, but given the nature of it, I'd hope it works anyway. I'm aware that Rainbow Dash isn't known as the typical 'always aggressive' kind of character, but for this type of story, I thought it could be fun to explore.
