Chapters Chapter 1 - Flames of change
As Crimson Eclipse soared through the darkening skies above her homeland she looked down over the sister peaks of Mount Vurdusk a nearly dormant volcano, One had within it the cavernous city that she and several other thestral clans called home, and the other that was still relatively active had at its crater a temple built to honor the two founding houses one which she happened to be a part of, House Crimson though sadly had been on a steep decline with it’s only remaining members being her father and herself, the other, house ebony had thrived and currently had near complete control in the governing of the city but Eclipse had other things on her mind she was about to go through her coming of age ceremony although much to her disappoint it would be held within the city palace instead of the temple where it would be held generally the scholars said the magical lay line that runs under the active peak had been surging with a worrying amount of magical energies worse yet it was mixing with the molten rock of the magma chamber causing the lava at the lip to be volatile and pour over the crater where it would normally rest as a burning lake.
As she gazed over the flowing lava she could see her target the temple hung suspended over the massive crater by eight huge and ancient yet nearly indestructible chains attached two each to four landing platforms. Landing on the basalt brick temple with practiced grace she trotted forward into the heart of the sacred structure she had been here often being basically royalty she was expected to oversee the ceremony with her father and the head of house Ebony and her two twin daughters. although never once was it this quiet almost unnervingly so.
The air shimmered with residue magic and heat were it not for the enchanted jewelry she had hanging from her neck she was sure her fur would burn off as she was literally cooked alive but thankfully that shouldn't happen, as she entered the main chamber she greeted the two bronze statues looking too the rightmost of the two she bowed and greeted her ancestor’s representation “greetings great ancestor I bid you well and apologize for the ceremony not taking place where you could have presided over it I will do my utmost to mitigate this slight against you.”
She reached out her right hoof and caressed the wing blades that rested on the statue's outstretched wings “Who could imagine such a beautiful and ornate weapon could have fallen so many.” She knew of course as she had been taught by her father that its owner had a taste for an eccentric flair and a love of enchantments yes Crimson Rune had enchanted her blades to be harder and sharper than the finest iron blade truly the work of a master and that she was not only of rune smithing but the art of war her name alone would instill the sense of fear into the hearts of those that faced her, A deadly general and a deadly combatant.
As she went to move her hoof back a great force rocked the temple on its chains throwing Eclipse to the floor with a startled batlike shriek, she landed hard fortunate to have not suffered any injury but misfortunately damaged her enchanted necklace it was still partially functioning but she could feel her body heating up fast from the ambient heat in the air she knew it would likely mean her death she made to leave quickly trotting out of the temple to one of the four exits as she neared the exit she extended her wings prepping to depart as soon as she was able.
When she breached the stone portal a bubble of superheated gas popped and sent a rush of lava over the rails and onto her body searing her large wings and back thrashing violently to the floor she managed to dislodge the molten rock but the damage was done there would be no chance of an aerial escape now her only hope would be attempting an escape over the great chains that held the temple.
She felt the air vibrate with magical energy and started to doubt if escape was still an option as she looked up in desperation she could see the unmistakable figure of her father attempting to fly to her rescue but being stopped by his guards preventing him from flying into his death as well as numerous others brought over from the commotion only able to watch in horror as she was burned alive. she was not upset at them though as she could understand that it was too dangerous to approach.
As she closed her eyes making a silent prayer accepting what was to come she was nearly blinded by an intense light as the magic humming in the crater reached an apex and faded just as quickly. She blinked away the sunspots in her eyes and could slowly see a figure standing before her nothing like she had ever seen but before she could ponder the creature's existence further she fell to the floor for the third time this night as her body collapsed due to the pain and intense heat.
Seeing the creature as her last chance of survival she desperately reached a hoof out and begged threw a burning and dry throat “Please he-lp me” It looked at her shocked and stumbled forward it was close to her but it seemed unsure placing her hoof against the creatures leg she looked into its small beady eyes and pleadingly whimpered “please” assumedly making up its mind it bent down and wrapped it’s long appendages around her body raising to its full height it stumbled forward once more heading towards the great chain It stepped over the lip of the platform and on to the first link and slowly made its way across to the next and so on.
She could tell it was in worse shape than she was with her still being partially protected from the heat its hair was mostly gone and its exposed flesh was starting to bubble and discolor its movements had started to gradually slow, Approaching the edge of the crater there was a sudden yell.
“ECLIPSE!” her father yelled she looked up to see him breaking free from his guards and flying towards them the creature looked up only to be blinded by a jet of heat-infused magic as he lost his footing and fell over the edge of the last link onto the ash covered slope of the volcano her rescuer holding her in a death grip rolled and tumbled down the mountain coming to an eventual stop on a small plateau as it rolled to a stop she was tossed from its grip laying prone on the cold stone would feel like heaven if she hadn't been in such intense pain she heard a series of rapid clacks against the stone when her father landed and rushed to her side quickly bringing a flask to her lips with his wing she recognized the substance instantly by its heavy iron taste and thick consistency.
Being a pureblooded thestral allowed her to consume the blood of others to enhance her species's already fast healing ability quickly fixing any minor injury yet the burn on her right wing and back would heal fast but would take much longer and would most likely scar. In significantly less pain than she had been mere moments ago scanning the plateau, she watched as several guards and commoners landed and slowly started to encircle the prone body of the strange beast. Less than gracefully rising to her hoofs she moved to make her way to the creature's side her father quickly followed behind as she moved she thought about how to best handle this dreadful situation although immensely grateful for the rescue.
It had inadvertently made her look weak something with her family's current dwindling authority she just couldn't let stand she decided as she reached the creature and ordered a gourd to turn it over that it would have to be subjugated in order to make the appearance that she was these things, master, and that it had acted on her order to rescue her.
“Guards! Bring my familiar back to my family manor put it in the dungeon and send for a healer” she commanded looking over its burned and abused body moving her gaze up toward its head caused her to nearly vomit “And tell our blacksmith to make something to cover what is left of its face”
As the guards collected its body one would think it was dead by just how it had looked but when standing closer she had seen the slow rise and fall of its chest she was honor-bound to save whatever it is and so she would.
she cared little if death would have been a mercy.
She had an image to uphold.
Chapter 2 - Hello darkness
Chapter 2 - Hello darkness
The guards did as instructed, depositing the mistress's monster in the manor’s small dungeon, Then promptly splitting up to finish their remaining orders.
One guard went about retrieving the family healer Hard Pill another highborn thestral but lacking the family prestige that elevated others like Miss Eclipse, The other left the main house to go to the worker's quarters on the edge of the property where the smithy worked, a hardy but lowborn thestral named Solid Hoof.
Hard Pill being inside the main house was the closest and subsequently reached by the guard first, He firmly rapped his hoof against the sturdy ironwood door.
“ Miss Pill your services have been requested by Miss Eclipse, You are to report to the dungeon and take care of your new charge.” The guard, having completed his order, returned to his regular patrol.
He left long before a still half-asleep and disheveled Hard Pill could be seen stumbling out of her room fumbling with her medical equipment and supplies not expecting to have to work so early taking to celebrating their mistress’s coming of age ceremony with the rest of the staff the night before. She felt groggy and had a splitting headache being a medical professional herself she could easily identify her current condition as a wicked hangover.
Shaking her head clear and reorganizing her things she moved at a brisk trot towards the dungeon to see what fool had probably partaken too much and hurt themselves in the process.
Well, that is what she thought she would be dealing with instead when she reached the seldom-used holding cells she met an uneasy-looking Solid Hoof standing at the entrance of the cell seemingly unwilling to enter its dimly lit confines.
Frustrated at the hold-up Pill quickly voiced her disappointment at being forestalled. “Um-hum” she cleared her throat and continued “Solid why are you standing there like a spooked filly?” the only response she received was a hoof pointed into the cell itself.
Following where the hoof was pointing she began to rebuke the mare once more but the words quickly died in her throat. In the cell spilled over the small cot was something huge, something she had never seen before its long limbs hung over the cot haphazardly easily reaching the floor, It was covered in torn, burned fabric that did little to hide the hideous wounds that littered its body concentrated on what was most likely its head.
Knowing that wounds like this needed to be tended to with utmost haste she quickly recovered from her shock and gently bumped Solid Hoof with her flank signaling the spooked mare to move, She quietly did so allowing Pill to enter and see how severe the burns truly were, Severe they were indeed most of its exposed skin appeared to be discolored and burned although that could be fixed with time and magic what she was most worried about is what remained of its face.
The heat-infused magic had vaporized nearly all organic material on its skull leaving charred chunks of cooked flesh and blackened bone, She noted the two recesses of it's face meant it had forward-facing eyes emphasis on had with both optical organs missing, She had seen some nasty injuries in her time but this was on a whole new level she would have a hard time keeping it alive but with enough blood, sweat and no small amount of magic it should be possible especially if her mistress deemed it so.
Solid Hoof took the opportunity to express her thoughts on their new charge having heard about the incident from a fellow worker, Who had seen the event take place before the guard had instructed that her skills had been requested by Miss Eclipse
“We should let that thing die, no good ever comes from summoning magic you know that stuff's evil right? Remember what happened to Plum’s family a bit back?”
Pill sharply replayed “It’s not your place to decide Hoof, we have a duty to fulfill and I'll see it done, now unless you want to find yourself a nice room down here I suggest you get to work, And the Plums disappeared while traveling to canterlot on diplomatic work not summoning some sort of monster you should stop listing to the wild rumors those mares at the bar keep telling you.”
Maneuvering her wing tips to gently shift it's head from it's laying position she cracked a grim grin and peaked back at Hoof “You know with how the jaw is exposed it sort of looks like it's smiling” she said gently facing the limp head towards her disgruntled companion watching her visibly blanch chuckling at her friend's unease she asked her what they wanted of the blacksmith batmare “So why’d they call a blacksmith for a burn victim?”
Hoof replied moving her head to the side to remove the creature from her view “Miss Eclipse wished for its face to be covered and I can see why” She reached a wing into her apron retrieving her measuring instruments then hastily taking quick measurements of it's skull and facial dimensions, She turned away with a shudder, completing her work she gave a parting word before leaving “I'll get to work, Good luck keeping that thing alive.” With that she left, leaving Pill alone with her newest patient.
“Well then,” she said, cracking her stiff neck “Let’s get to work then.”
When Solid Hoof returned several hours later carrying a package wrapped in cloth she trotted into the cell just in time to see Pill wiping blood from her wings and hooves with a damp rag, having just recently finished cleaning and bandaging the creature, Using magic harnessed with her wing to close and heal the creature's many wounds, she was able to stabilize it.
Pill looked over and asked Hoof “Done so soon? I'm interested to see what you have come up with.”
“Well you should remember Im damn good at what I do Pill so don't be too surprised and take a gander at this,” she said as she used one wing to hold the package and the other to quickly remove the cloth with a flourish revealing a bronze mask, made to look like the creature's skull equipped with a hinged jaw and thin leather padding lining it's interior to act as skin that would serve to protect the creatures exposed wounds and bone, A thick leather strap was attached to back to hold it in place. “Pretty good right?”
It's kind of distasteful isn't it?” Pill asked, tilting her head to the side and squinting her eyes at the mask “I would have made something that looked a little closer to what it had been like before it's deformation.” she answered
Hoof shrugged “And how was I supposed to possibly know what this thing looked like before it got burned?”
“Beats me” Pill returned a shrug of her own.
“Well then let's put it to the real test shall we.” Hoof moved to the creature's side and affixed the mask to the creature's face using one wing to move in into place and her other to tighten the strap to the back of it's bandaged head, Stepping back to admire her work she spoke “Yeah I think it's pretty good work myself nearly fits just right, with a couple of adjustments I bet it would be perfect.”
“Well I think you and I have a different definition of perfect, But it should do for now, So do you want to tell the Mistress that her new toy is ready?” asked Pill before turning towards the sound of the door being pushed open behind her.
“There will be no need to burden yourself so Miss Pill, I intended to grace you with my presence so I can inspect my “new toy” as you called it,” Eclipse said as she pushed past the door into the cell she addressed Hard Pill once more “Now what can you tell me about this my creature Pill?”
Pill quickly replied “Well after removing its coverings I have discovered that it is a male furthermore possibly intelligent being that it possessed clothing and metal trinkets, as far as injuries are concerned it's lower body being covered sustained only minor burns and bruises. However, I fear because of the intensity of the burns to the cranium, It is without a doubt blind, possibly deaf, and mute as well.”
“Possibly intelligent, blind, mute, and deaf?” Eclipse paused in thought then continued.
“Hmm yes I believe we might get some use out of the creature yet, There are ways to surmount such disabilities I’ll just have to review some of the older rune scrolls and if it does turn out to be intelligent it will be easier for you to train” she nodded to herself than began to leave the room now having confirmed her previous orders had been fulfilled nearly leaving before Hard Pill asked about the sudden task of training the creature.
“Are you sure Miss Eclipse? I’m better suited to healing than I am to monster taming, I just can't be the best option for this task.”
Without turning back Eclipse replied, “I certainly hope you aren't second-guessing my judgments, Miss Hard Pill I would certainly hate to have to make Father find a new resident physician.”
Hard PIll bowed her head “Apologies Miss Eclipse I did not mean to insinuate such a thing, I look forward to fulfilling your orders to the utmost of my abilities.” she said, not raising her head until Eclipse had left the room.
“I suppose we should probably name it unless you just want to just keep calling it “it” you know, I kinda liked what you said earlier about it looking like it had a smile, So let's call it Happy.” Solid Hoof said from the edge of the room.
With a dry chuckle, Pill looked up at Hoof and commented “Once again with the horrible taste, But fine it will have to do for now at least.” After slowly pouring water into Happy's mouth and double-checking the bandages the two Thestrals left to return to their regular nightly duties not knowing the full extent the creature's sudden appearance would affect their lives.
Chapter 3 - eye’s for you
Chapter 3 - eye’s for you.
The following nights fell into a trend for Pill consisting mostly of her regular duties in the manors infirmary, Tending to the rare injury from the staff or guards but now with the addition of taking care of the needs of her new patient and charge Happy, Adding a considerable workload to her usually slow schedule started to interfere with her completely professional midnight naps which until now hadn't been a problem.
About halfway through the third week of Happy’s stay within the infirmary PIll found herself nodding off amid changing his bandages and failed to see him begin to stir awake.
Happy awoke trying to open his eyelids, finding himself unable to, he instead moved his hand towards his face to find out why his vision was obstructed.
He found out quickly that his ability to see had been denied by a metal mask, He was surprised until he thought back to what led to him ending up here, reasoning that It must be some sort of prosthetic, thinking back to the accident he suffered remembering the intense heat and pain as he carried the creature over the huge searing hot chains.
'The creature, what was it?' He thought. It looked kind of like a pony but he could swear it had wings, A Pegasus perhaps but why would a creature from Greek mythology be with him above a volcano? For that matter, why was he there? These and many more thoughts ran through his mind.
Returning his hand to his side it came into contact with a large furry object laying against the cot he quickly retreated his hand, Waiting for whatever was next to him to move… When it didn't he slowly moved his hand back.
'Fur?' His first guess would have to be a large dog with the thick short haired coat he was currently gently scratching.
It wasn't common for hospitals to have pets roaming the building so he assumed he wasn't in one or at least one that wasn't held strictly to code.
He continued thinking about his current situation, absent-mindedly petting the dog taking comfort in its presence, Until he slowly slipped back into a peaceful slumber.
Soon after Pill awoke begrudgingly from a relaxing dream, sighing to herself when she realized she had passed out, Also registering an unfamiliar weight that rested on the back of her neck she looked up and froze.
Happy had moved, she would have to try to figure out if it had been done voluntarily or just a random muscle spasm.
Adjusting his arm back onto the cot she moved to check if it had woken up but with It being nearly completely covered in bandages she could only go off it's breathing pattern, Which at this moment had remained as a steady rhythm of inhales and exhales, so she went with a more direct method, swaying her hip to the side and bumping the cot with her flank to jostle her charge awake, A task she successfully completed.
The creature's arm moved onto her neck, Her muscles tensed under the touch not knowing what to expect only relaxing when Happy's hand began to scratch she pushed her neck further into the mesmerizing feeling but quickly regained her senses stepping back and clearing her throat she addressed him "Happy my name is Hard Pill and I have been tasked with your rehabilitation and training I look forward to working with you and hope you give me as little trouble as possible."
Happy tried to reason out what the new voice had said, Sad the dog moved away he thought on 'rehabilitation he understood, But training? What could she mean by that?," He tried to respond but only managed to make a raspy wheeze and a dry cough, giving up on speaking he decided to just nod in the direction of the voice.
Pill watched the creature nod at her, she continued "Being how it's almost morning we will start your physical therapy early tonight I will also inform Miss Eclipse that you have awoken and seem capable of hearing, It will certainly narrow down her research leaving just sight and speech to be achieved," she turned to leave and made her way out of the cell "now make sure to get plenty of rest your going to need your strength later, Good night Happy."
With that the door closed Hard Pill made her way out of the manors dungeon, Through the winding halls stopping in front of the large wooden doors leading into the dining hall where Crimson Eclipse and her father should be eating dinner.
She pushed one of the large doors open and entered spotting Eclipse enjoying her meal in solitude.
Looking up from her meal Eclipse started to address Pill's unannounced intrusion.
"Hello Pill, how are you this morning? Would you perhaps like to join me?" She used a wing to gesture towards the chair at her side.
Hesitantly accepting the invitation Pill moved forward and sat down, A maid quickly set a silver tray and chalice infront of her, The ornate cup holding a viscous dark red fluid.
"Blood?"Pill asked, "what did it come from?"
"Yes," Eclipse responded, "Donated by a unicorn mare and is of an exceptional flavor," pausing to take a drink of her own chalice. "I believe you will enjoy it. Now tell me how my pet is, I'm very curious."
"Yes Miss Eclipse that's exactly why I had been seeking you, Tonight Happy had awoken from his coma and I have verified that he is indeed a sentient being, I will be starting his training tonight." Pill answered.
Eclipse finishing her meal brought a napkin to her lips removing any residue before replying "I have poured over the family's resources and believe I have found the perfect way to fix its disabilities, I will have tools prepared for the procedure tonight."
With that she excused herself and left the dining room leaving Hard Pill to finish her meal alone and retire for the day.
The next night came quickly, Pill made her way to the cell housing Happy, eager to see what her mistress had dug up to solve the creature's blindness.
So with a speedy trot she reached her destination before long and entered, she instantly recognized the new additions to the normally bare space, the most obvious being a long medical table containing an assortment of tools, books, and tomes.
Before she could continue her visual assessment of the room her mistress Crimson Eclipse entered and greeted her, "Oh Miss Pill Im glad you are here so early, I too am eager to begin as well, I had some of the staff prepare what we will need so their would be no delay."
Pill smiled at her "Very foresightful, How shall we begin?"
"We will have to create a rune circuit to recreate or rather replace his destroyed optical organs,"Eclipse moved forward and selected a fine point chisel to fulfill her delicate intentions.
She continued "To do so I will carve a plethora of runic spells into its skull," she began carving the bone with tender care not worrying about disturbing his sleep, having already seen to it that his water was mixed with a sleeping agent.
Hard Pill looked on, enchanted by her mistress's nimble touch and inquired, "What comes next?"
"Next I will inlay gold, allowing my pet to conduct magic. After that all we will need is a battery, we will use this delightful prosthetic Hard Hoof had expertly crafted for him. The bronze will absorb magic decently." After she finished explaining she let her mind focus on her work, losing track of time until she was nearly done.
"Exhausting work but it is rewarding to see one's art come to life would you not agree Pill?" Eclipse asked settings down her tool's.
"Yes, It is amazing but how will it work, will it allow it to see like it had before?" Pill answered and asked her own question.
"I cannot say for certain I have no basis for how it had perceived the world before but the runes should magically replicate the functionality of the destroyed organ." Eclipse answered as she finished affixing Happy's prosthetic face and tightening the leather strap.
She continued "And with the prosthetic having its own set of tiny expertly etched runes, It will be charged by ambient magic. Allowing me to mercifully bestow upon my pet the gift of sight."
"Wonderful Mistress Eclipse, If you're done how shall we awaken it?" Pill asked.
"I will simply command my pet to awaken, observe well I do so." Eclipse commanded.
"Now my pet Awaken and Arise ," power seeped into her words as she commanded the creature, meanwhile a glim glow of gold tinted magic emitted from behind Happy's metal face.
And as soon as her words ceased Happy had stood up rigid seemingly eager to fulfill his new master's will.
"Now then, I have grown weary I will have Happy follow you so you can begin his training," Eclipse looked up, her dark crimson eye's meeting the hollow eye's of Happy's false face, she smiled sweetly and continued,"And you my pet will Obey Miss Hard Pill ."
With that she left Pill alone, In awkward silence with her charge Happy, He looked down at her,"Yes now then Happy please follow me, I will give you a tour of your new home." Pill moved to leave but stopped when she noticed Happy had not moved.
She trotted over to his side and sat down and placed a comforting wing against his back.
"Hey big guy come on it's not that bad, Mistress Eclipse is a bit eccentric but she's a great mare to work for and she seems to have a special interest in you, So you should have nothing to worry about, Now how about we go get some air." She finished comforting him and started trotting out of the room once more.
This time with Happy following close behind, Pill turned her head back and smiled at him, "I know, I'll show you the manor's outer garden. It's one of my favorite places in the city."
Happy was trying to figure out what was going on. Obviously the Pegasus he had seen before was real, much like the one he was currently following and even crazier yet, they are sentient, and seem to have some form of technology or magic that appears to enslave him.
He decided it would be best just to follow their commands for now.
He needed to figure out what was going on and why he involuntarily moved when the other Pegasus commanded him.
He watched her as he followed behind, deciding that maybe, Pegasus was the wrong word to describe his little furry master, The wings on her back resembling bat wings, Happy thought 'I suppose I'll refer to them as bat ponies.'
Hard Pill suddenly stopped nearly causing Happy to trip over her while she announced that they had arrived In the outer garden, "And here we are, Definitely more vibrant than Miss Eclipse's gloomy flower garden," she paused and looked at him, "Don't tell her I said that though she's a little self conscious about her tastes." She giggled
"Anyway let's begin your training shall we, I will start by explaining to you whom you serve, Mistress Crimson Eclipse is your master and head of house Crimson," Pill continued.
"House Crimson is one of three main governing houses here in Vurdusk, they control the military, the other's, House Ebony which controls the city's laws and foreign affairs, and House Coin which controls the banks and trade guild," she paused and pointed a hood towards herself.
"And then there are the serving houses, I belong to house Hard, and lastly there are the common Houses which are too numerous and unimportant to go through." She rested down into the grass and yawned.
"Why don't we just take a quick little break? I could really use a nap, Just try to stick around here and behave." She instructed as she layed her head against the soft grass, letting her eye's close, slipping into a light slumber.
Happy watched in disbelief as the bat pony fell asleep, not understanding why the creature would choose to slumber In the company of something no doubt as alien as him, 'Maybe she's just more trusting than the average person,' Sitting down next to the mare he waited for her to awake taking the opportunity to rest his recovering body.
Pill stirred awake before long, Happy watched the bat pony stretch her legs and wings before she met his gaze and addressed him, "Come now happy let's return to the manor. I'm hungry and I'm sure you could use some food as well."
Happy obediently followed the mare Into the castle-like dwelling looking at the Gothic building he couldn't help but have a sudden thought invade his mind, 'A vampire would totally live here.'
If only he knew just how right he was.
Author's Note
Ok so hopefully this chapter will be a little better, I'm also a good bit through the next chapter aswell, my goal is 10k words so we'll see how that goes.
Thanks for reading.
Chapter 4 - Well, well, well
Chapter 4 - Well well well
The days once again fell into a routine, Happy would patiently wait for Pill to arrive In the morning from there He would follow her, listening as she explained the duties and roles of the manor staff, city laws, and that he was essentially an exotic pet for a rich possessive woman who controlled the city's policing force, that revolution helped him decide trying an escape was an Ill advised endeavor, so he did as he was told, which today seemed to be starting off different.
Hard Pill was late, well from what he could gather having no way to accurately gauge the movement of time from the dark confines of his room which of course was just a dim cell.
The sound of hoofs clacking against the stone stairs pulled him from his thought, he would soon have company and from the sound of it more than one pony was approaching, which was uncommon and frankly made him slightly nervous, being attached to Pill's hip for most of the time he's spent in House Crimson's manor only seeing other ponies in passing and not to mention being mute had done nothing to help breach the social gap between him and the quadrupeds that inhabited this land.
Hard Pill entered his room with a beaming smile clearly excited, following close behind was Eclipse whose expression was more subdued, Pill waved a wing in greeting, "Hi Happy, You're going to be so thrilled when you hear this!" She exclaimed.
"Hello Happy," Eclipse greeted him and continued "I am certain today's task will be very exciting for you, Because of my obligations I am unable to deliver some financial paperwork for the city's guard to the Coin's, So I have decided to send Hard Pill in my place," Happy looked over at the aforementioned batmare still bursting with excitement.
Eclipse continued "And because she has been pestering me about letting you leave the manor grounds I have decided to allow you to accompany her."
Pill cut in "This is going to be great, I'll be able to show you all my favorite hangouts in the city and introduce you to my friends, I can't wait!" Pill exclaimed, prancing in place barely containing Her excitement at the prospect of chaperoning Happy's first excursion into the heart of the city.
Eclipse raised her eyebrow at her worker's antics "Well then I shall take my leave, Here is the paperwork," She reached a wing into her saddle bag and retrieved a bundle of papers, passing them to Pill, she left with a warning, “Remember Miss Pill you will be representing House Crimson in this matter, Do not disappoint.”
“I'll do my best Mistress Eclipse,” she saluted her retreating boss. She turned back to Happy “How about we get you ready for a night on the town?” she trotted over to a sac she left near the entrance “I'm sure you don't mind but during your medical examination I decided to take some quick measurements to pass along to Solid Hoof, You wouldn't have guessed looking at her but she's spectacular with a needle,” she hoofed the sac into Happy's waiting hands. “Go ahead and try it on.”
He complied setting the bag aside and changing out of the rudimentary clothes that Pill had made for him, he carefully folded and set them down on his bed gratefully for her dedication, unperturbed by her standing in the room as he changed having spent most of his time with Pill in his recovery, he had become fond of her and if he still could speak would openly consider her a friend.
He retrieved the bag and pulled out a pair of pants, colored black with gray stripes running down its legs, no zipper just a set of three bronze buttons, next was a red long-sleeve collared shirt, a waistcoat, and a coat that matched the design of the pants, lastly, a black bow tie to finish the outfit.
“You look great,” Pill complimented “Hoof must have taken inspiration from Crimson Striker's usual outfits, I'm sure Eclipse will love it, maybe we can catch her on the way out.” Pill began to leave and Happy quickly moved to walk at her side.
They reached the manor's main doors shortly after, Unfortunately, Eclipse had not been present In her office when they passed, Pill decided to surprise her with Happy's new outfit when they returned.
Happy was thrilled to finally have the opportunity to get a look at the city, he was able to see small sections from the manor's outer garden but that paled in comparison to the full view of which he was currently receiving as Pill and himself descended a basalt brick road from the Crimson family's manor, With the new perspective he was able to drink in the sight of the cavern built city, many of the homes appeared to be carved right into the walls and ceiling, being easily accessed by the flying inhabitants.
The buildings that had not been carved into the surrounding rock appeared to be, if not completely, mostly made of the same basalt bricks that compromised nearly every other structure, many looked like they would be right at home in a Victorian countryside painting.
He watched many of the bat ponies go about their nightly activities roused from his observation when Pill suddenly began to address him.
“Happy, remember what I said about the Coins? They are a ruling family like the Crimson's so it would be wise to be on your best behavior.”
Happy only heard half of what Pill had been saying, His attention being torn to a pony approaching on the road ahead of him, and although it was something to note this was the first pony Happy had seen without wings, in their stead the Stallion possesses a single horn, in the dead center of his forehead.
‘A unicorn? yeah, Pill told me about those she said they can use magic focused from their horn, I wonder if that's the reason why his armor has that gold shimmer covering it?’ Happy thought being so entranced by the incorporeal substance that as he passed the unicorn he reached out and ran a hand over the unicorn amour and was equal parts mystified and horrified as the magic seemed to attach to his hand pulled by some unseen force up his arm, over his shoulder, and Into the bronze mask that covered his skull he could feel the mask hum with an unfamiliar energy.
Concerned that he had somehow unintentionally altered the unicorn's armor, He stopped and turned to see if the pony had noticed, his worries seemed to be unfounded the unicorn continued seemingly unbothered or simply did not realize the loss of magic.
Pill stopped soon after, curious as to why she was suddenly walking by herself, she turned and called back to her companion “Happy! Come on we can't be late dropping this paperwork off Eclipse will have our heads!” Happy jogged up to the mare, his long legs making quick work of the short distance once he reached her they resumed their walk unobstructed for some time before they ran into a bat mare that Pill must have known since both mares had been conversing for several minutes now, Happy began to wonder if the paperwork was actually time sensitive or not.
Their conversation took an apparent sudden topic change when both thestral mares turned to look at Happy one expectantly and the other with a bright welcoming smile, Pill, upset with his lack of action repeated herself “Happy I said this is my friend Night Blossom.” He reasoned that she wanted him to greet the mare, and out of habit he extended his hand down toward her, Blossom met his hand with her hoof and they exchanged a short shake, satisfied by the short greeting Blossom returned her attention to Pill “Dark Cherry is going to be livid I got to meet him first, you know she got put on guard duty at the Crimson’s? She’s been bragging about it for the last couple of days. I can't wait to rub this in.” she laughed to herself then gave them both a farewell and left.
Once they reached the Coin’s manor Pill asked Happy if he would like to wait outside “You just haven't been very attentive today so I don't want to cause a possible misunderstanding with Coin Counter I hear he can be very Ill-tempered,” Happy for his part nodded his head in agreement glad to shake the responsibility.
Pill continued “Why don't you check out the garden. I also hear the family spends a small fortune to keep one of the best in the city. I bet it’s really something to see, Just behave yourself okay?” Happy nodded once more, Pill trotted down the path leading to the door and entered.
Happy not knowing much about the property and much less about the location of this fabled garden, chose to walk the perimeter of the gigantic home after several minutes of walking he did find what could have been a garden but nothing of the sort that Pill had described, the ground nearly desolate, not counting the lifeless shrubs and several trees that dotted the “garden”. Off on the edge of the garden, he spied a well with several items appearing to be strewn around its basalt brick base, walking closer to inspect the loosely scattered items, picking two of the closest up he retrieved a ledger and an abacus finding it odd such things would be lying about he continued forward giving the well itself an inspection the outside appeared just as you'd expect the only exception being the missing rope and bucket, Peering down into to the well, curious to know if he’d be able to see the combo, He lurched back the sudden surprise at seeing a pair of piercing gold eyes gaze back from the bottom nearly stopped his heart.
Taking a moment, He collected himself the situation had become evident, A pony had fallen into the well Happy peered once more over the rim of the well, and he was able to discern the pony in greater detail, Her wet and matted coat a burnt gold, the membrane of her bat-like wings matched her mane a muted silver. She was clinging to the wall treading water with her back legs, the mare called out to him “Hello as you can see I'm in quite a predicament at the moment If you would be so obliged to provide assistance I would be immensely grateful” Happy looked at the walls of the well the mortar holding the bricks receding with age would allow him an easy descent, Nodding down at the mare to convey his willingness to help.
He stood up and removed his coat and waistcoat setting them on the ground next to the brick face of the well, and sat on the rim, Swinging his legs over the well wall he slowly eased himself down, Fitting his fingers into the grooves on the brickworks exposed face, several minutes and feet had gone by while he carefully made with way further into the darkness of the well, his false eyes not giving him any ability to see in the dark wasn't the only danger present he learned when the brick his right hand had hold of slipped from its stone confines the mortar long deteriorated led him to freefall nearly to the water's surface before he could arrest his decent scuffing up his back and hands in the process, unable to voice his discomfort he spared a quick thought ‘shoddy work’ and carefully continued his decent reaching the mare without further incident.
After grounding his feet firmly into the wall he reached his right arm down, The mare accepted his outreached arm with zero hesitation, He then pulled her close she maneuvered herself to rest against his back forelegs wrapped around his neck.
The chokehold and not to mention the additional weight would no doubt make the climb a herculean task and he soon found this to be true each minute warped into an hour, and each foot climbed felt like a mile, by the time they approached the end of the arduous task he was exhausted, his trembling legs burning with effort, lungs gasping for air due not only to exertion but strangulation that mercifully came to an abrupt end. He crested the rim of the well, the thestral mare dismounted his back as he composed himself leaning against the wood frame that once held the water bucket to recover.
The mare used the opportunity to introduce herself “Hello Sir, My name is Coin Seeker, I cannot thank you enough for your prompt rescue I fear I would have been nearly at the end of my rope if you had not stumbled upon me exhaustion would certainly left me in an aqueous grave” Seeker retrieved a wooden case from the ground one of the many aforementioned items scattered around the foot of the well from her earlier stumble and subsequent fall.
“This will have to do for now, Please consider it a small token of my gratitude, I shall also ask my father to arrange an additional reward more fitting.”
Happy couldn't think of anything that could be better than the reward he was currently receiving. Inside the wooden case neatly rested five rows of five gold coins.
Pill had already explained their currency, a copper coin being the lowest then on to silver which was twenty-five copper coins, second greatest in value being gold equivalent to one hundred copper coins and last but certainly not least was platinum the rare coin almost exclusively traded between banks and other financial powerhouses, and here this sopping wet thestral mare was offering him two thousand five hundred dollars in their local currency.
‘Who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth,’ He thought to himself gently taking the box.
He removed two gold coins from the case and slipped them into his breast pocket then tucking the case under his waistcoat leaving an odd outline on his midsection that was subsequently hidden beneath his Jacket, Looking toward the sky an attempt to gauge time availed little, the Thestrals being nocturnal lived their lives in the night's dark embrace that meaning no sun, and no moon in sight, the extinct volcanoes vent only allowing a limited view of the night sky.
“Excuse me, Would you not like to introduce yourself? It is considered rude to not give a name when one has so readily provided their own.’
He returned his attention and line of sight back to Coin Seeker ‘Damn really shouldn't be pissing off a scion of the Coins’ He had no way to verbally communicate with the notable mare and with no desire to embarrass himself with an impromptu game of charades, He shuffled in place, an awkward silence began to permeate the cool night air, fortunately, a voice cut through the silence sparing Happy further discomfort at his unfortunate lack of communicative ability.
“Happy there you are, The garden is on the other side of the property dummy,” Hard Pill galloped towards the odd Human and thestral pair, Coming to an abrupt halt before Coin Seeker she quickly addressed the mare “Greetings Miss Seeker I apologize for intruding and sincerely hope Happy hasn't caused you any trouble, May I offer you any assistance?”
“None whatsoever, If Happy,” Seeker gestured a hoof at the aforementioned creature, “had not come along when he did, I wouldn't be nearly as talkative and no I shall not require any more assistance than what has already been rendered Miss Pill, Thank you for asking” Seeker paused covered her muzzle with a hoof and let out a small yawn before continuing.
“Miss Pill forgive me for drawing our conversation to an early end but this incident has left me exhausted and In need of a stiff drink please give my regards to both Crimson Stricker, and Eclipse.” Coin Seeker retrieved the last of her belongings from the wells vicinity and departed the old dead garden
Hard Pill and Happy exited the property diverting from the road they arrived on, Why? A question Pill answered before Happy could start to wonder.
“A stiff drink sounds like a fantastic idea, I don't know how your run-in with Seeker went,”
‘Not the worst I've had’ Happy thought while shrugging at the thestral mare.
“But Counter just wouldn't shut up about the budget, It's not even something I'm in charge of for moon's sake" Pill complained as they continued down the stone path.
Pill smirked at Happy as they rounded a building “So that and to introduce you to my other friend is why we're stopping at my favorite Pub,” Pill stood on her rear legs and flourished her forelegs “The Wet Fang!”
Happy gave a polite clap at Pill's antics while looking over the Pub, It seemed like a decent place a medium-sized two-story building constructed of the same material found in many of the buildings in Mount Vurdusk, A warm glow casting out from the dyed glass panes, a song being sung just inside, and the gentle murmur from the inhabitants mended together to create a warm welcoming atmosphere that radiated from The Wet Fang.
Pill finished her display before ushering Happy into the warm embrace of the Pubs heated air, a fire gently danced in the middle of the establishment a hanging chimney captured and removed any smoke long before it could bother the patrons, Tables and chairs filled the floor while booths sat neatly nestled against the outer walls.
Sitting within one on the far right wall of the pub, Two mare's, One Happy recognized as the Thestral mare he met earlier that night on the road ‘Night Blossom I think her name was so the other must be Dark Cherry’ he reasoned.
Pill quickly moved towards her friends seated herself next to Blossom, leaving Little Choice for Happy, he sat in the booth with the unfamiliar mare Dark Cherry.
Happy Extended a hand in greeting towards Cherry, she in tone awkwardly Slapped her amour clad hoof against his hand.
“Hey it's cool to meet you, Pill's talked alot about you,”
Happy nodded his head while rubbing His now sore hand ‘mean handshake.’ He thought.
Cherry gave him a quizzical look “Not a big talker are ya?”
Pill abruptly chimed in “He's incapable of speech,” then returned her attention to Night Blossom.
“So, He's stupid?” Dark Cherry questioned aloud
Happy looked at the mare, surprised and offended by her incorrect assumption.
“No, in fact I've found him to be surprisingly intelligent, So you might want to apologize.” Pill explained.
“Well geez I didn't mean anything by it, tell you what I'll Get you a drink as an apology, That Sound fair?.” Dark Cherry offered.
Happy gave her a thumbs up and replied internally ‘Sounds like a plan to me, apology accepted.’
The thestral mares began to chat amongst themselves, Happy not too interested in the topic at hand moved his attention outward towards the rest of the taverns patrons, unsurprisingly the majority appeared to be Thestrals,
The exception being two ponies sitting in a booth on the far wall of the tavern, one of the two looked familiar. ‘That's right the guard from just before we reached the Coin's place, I hope they aren't here looking for me,’ Just as the thought raced through his mind he made eye contact with the unicorn stallion.
The unicorn hastily turned his vision back to his companion, They traded words while taking quick glances in Happy's direction.
Dark Cherry looking over Happy's shoulder noticed the pair and called out to them in a joking manner “Hey if you stare into his eyes long enough he'll steal your soul!”
Happy and the two mare's turned to her, perturbed by her sudden outburst Hard Pill was the first to speak up “come on Cherry knock that stuff off he already has a hard Enough time fitting in, He doesn't need you spreading crazy rumors.” Pill chastised.
Cherry responded defensively “What the hell I was just trying to get his back, Those Ponies were staring at him.”
Night Blossom looked past Pill “I don't see any ponies over there.”
“Well…whatever, can we just get back to what we were talking about?” Cherry asked, exasperated by the sudden attention her actions caused.
“You should really just ask him if he's willing to go.” Pill Suggested.
“I guess you're right,” she conceded to Pill, Then bumping Happy's arm to grab his attention she asked “Happy some of the guards transferring to the Crimson manor post are my friends and they really want to meet you as well, Do you think you could drop by tomorrow?” Dark Cherry asked while giving her best puppy eye’s imitation.
Happy for his part looked to Hard Pill for approval not really catching any of the previous conversation left him mildly in the dark, Pill nodded and gestured At him with her hoof conveying that it was his decision.
‘Well I Don't really have much else going on, So sure why not,’ Happy gave the Thestral Mare a thumbs up ‘I just hope your joke doesn't cause surprise problems.’
The waitress arrived and hastily dispensed their drinks, after giving a polite hello rushed off to serve the next booth.
‘Thanks' Happy thought grabbing his drink and slowly bringing the glass to rest against His prosthetic with a dull Ping, as he drank small traces of dark brown beer trickled out between his skill and prosthetic, realizing this he set His beer down and retrieved the cloth napkin it being little more than a small rag it would have to do.
‘Damn still not used to drinking with this thing on, I'll need to practice with something less sticky.’ Happy thought sliding his prosthetic face up several inches exposing his gold rune filled skeletal face.
As he did his vision faded slowly with the runes delicate magical connection disconnected ‘I'm gonna have to get used to this too’ he thought, wiping his skull clean he returned the rag to the table and his prosthetic back to its regular resting place restoring his vision.
“Wow,” Dark Cherry exclaimed, her face only about a foot away closely examining Happy's prosthetic face “Those sure look fancy.”
“Happy,!”Pill harshly whispered “you can't expose your face like that in public, some of those runes are from the Crimson Family's secret archives.”
Happy nodded his head in understanding ‘sure thing my bad.’ He thought.
“Anyway I suppose now we have to get back to the Manor, I'll see you two girls later have a good night.” Pill sayed Her goodbye and exited the booth leaving some change on the table to Pay for her and Happy's drink, Happy taking the hint that they were leaving, stood up and followed Hard Pill out waving goodbye to the two Thestral mares.
The walk back was slow and filled with an awkward silence usually filled by Pill's informative nature that was until Pill suddenly dispelled the silence speaking Just over a whisper she attempted to explain herself “I'm sorry Happy… and not just for my outburst at the Wet Fang, But the Runes as well I should have told you sooner,” Hard Pill Fell silent clearly trying to collect her hectic thoughts, ultimately failing in her pursuit of clarity she remained consumed by thought and subsequently silent all the way back to The Crimson's manor.
When they arrived back they were quickly escorted to the dining hall. Apparently they had Important guests, The Coins had come for an unexpected visit.
Coin Counter was the first to address the two as they entered the dining hall with a subdued wave and friendly smile “Finally the Stallion of the hour has arrived, Now I must say It is fine indeed to meet the brave Gentlebat that rescued my precious Seeker.”
Happy waved back to the Stallion while he followed Hard Pill to their seats next to Eclipse and her father Striker.
“Yes…Finally I can be informed as to why Silent Echo intercepted an Equestrian wire transmission detailing a large, magic consuming bipedal creature, care to enlighten me Hard Pill?” Crimson Eclipse demanded an explanation from her employee.
“Well you see-” Pill began only to be interpreted by Seeker “Preposterous such things are myth.”
Only to be corrected by her father Coin Counter “Not so my dear, In Fact during the war between sun and moon such curiosities were employed by Crimson Rune, nonetheless the truly Preposterous idea is that Celestia would allow its existence.”
“Which begs the question father,” Seeker began locking eyes with Crimson Eclipse “How does one summon a Creature that doesn't exist?”
Eclipse's normally stoic expression turns sour, A deep frown graced her face realizing she had been caught red hooved she explained herself.
“Yes as you have so cleverly sleuthed out The creature Happy is to my knowledge not of this world”
“Wondrous, but are you certain it is not dangerous?” Counter asked.
“Hardly so, by the moon's light, Is the creature's benevolence not the reason for your presence tonight,” Crimson Striker paused, taking a deep pull from his chalice then continued. “That and the matter of unreported compensation received From your daughter.”
“Pesky law's alway complicating simple matters, Yes we will require the sum to be returned as you are aware unsanctioned exchanges between families are not to be tolerated.” Counter replied.
“I'm well aware” Crimson Eclipse sharply replied, Anger tainting her words “Happy return the sum of your reward to The Coin's.”
All eyes shifted to Happy as he sat in defiance unwilling to relinquish his grossly overcompensated reward ‘To hell with that, I earned this gold and I'm damn well going to keep it.’ Happy thought crossing his arms over the hidden case of gold under his shirt.
Then came the command
“Return the gold now.”
He tried to fight the compulsion, His body stood rigid arms locked at his sides by a considerable mental effort, The runes under his false face glowed with increasing intensity.
“Haha fantastic!” Coin Counter exclaimed “As stubborn as an ox and greedy as any dragon, a Stallion of my own fang.” and Continued to observe the Creature's doomed struggle.
Happy's arm moved at a pace easily described as miniscule, a stiff sweat covered hand retrieved the coin filled case pulling it from its cloth covered hiding place and unceremoniously dropping it on the table retrieved by a maid and hoofed over to Coin Seeker.
Seeker accepted the case while expressing an Inquiry “It would seem the creature has a will of its own, What compels it to abide by your command?”
“A network of runic spells forces his will to become subservient to my own, And the consequence of defiance is it's expansion If he does not follow my will magic builds up and allows the runes to expand further into the creature's flesh making it all the more susceptible.” Eclipse explained.
Seeker looked over Happy's limp form, Now collapsed over the ornate wooden chair, Small whiffs of smoke lazily ascended from the edges of Happy's bronze false face, Freshly formed runic chains flowed partly down his neck reminiscent of a plant's roots.
“Brusque but not without a curtain eloquence, Although I did, Or rather, My father and I have prepared a gift that is well within the confines of such bothersome laws,” Seeker said as she signaled a servant on standby.
With a practiced step he moved forward while producing a small wooden case from under his wing bearing the Coin’s insignia proudly on its lid, Carefully placing the gift on the large wooden dining table opening the case two gold hinged arms held the case open exposing a lush velvet padded interior on which rested two finely crafted ornate vials.
Crimson Eclipse's eyes widened for a mere moment; a slip up, One she quickly brushed past “A more extravagant gift could not be prepared, I am certain he will be delighted with your offering.” Eclipse accepted the gift on Happy's behalf, Signaling one of her own servants to collect the case.
After the exchange silence ruled for several moments, that is until Happy silently roared back to life, His fist striking the table with a mighty thud, Spilling Several drinks with his other hand he tore the mask from his face and sent it careening across the dining room.
‘Damn you to hell! You Goddamned monster I won't be your puppet forever just remember that!’ Happy Roared in his mind.
Coin Counter once again amused by the creature's antics posed an idea to his counterpart “Say Striker let's have the creature accompany us on our upcoming hunting trip, It could prove most interesting.”
“He would need to be trained and outfitted for such an excursion, Although I believe the guard captain should be up to the task, yes why not, See to it that it is done Eclipse.” Striker replied.
“Yes father, as you command,” answered Eclipse then turned to Pill to issue a command “Hard Pill collect Happy's prosthetic and bring him to his cell, Then see to it Tempered Short begins his training with the recruits tonight.”
“It will be done, Mistress.” Pill excused herself from the table and collected Happy as a maid passed her his prosthetic and the two swiftly left the Remaining occupants to converse amongst themselves, Happy was despondent the entire trek to his dwelling, Reluctantly dawning his false face after a gently convincing from Hard Pill he was then left alone bereft of his reward.
‘Well not exactly” He thought reaching into his pocket and retrieving two gold coins gazing upon them with a thousand yard stare, his flesh burned from the heat of the gold runes that had burrowed their way into his skin, Dark thoughts of revenge and hopelessness teared at his mind.
His fist closed around the coins with a vice-like grip then with gritted teeth he swore vengeance against his master followed by a fitful slumber that would leave him in poor shape for the challenges to come.

Chapter 5 - last voyage of The Mercy's Veil.
When guards are reposted to serve at House Crimson's manor, they must undergo intense retraining, Destroying and rebuilding these already tenured soldiers from the ground up.
Unfortunately for Happy, he was scheduled to join these proceedings under Captain Tempered Short a diminutive mare known for her torture-like methodology towards training and a hatred for different species explicitly those of greater stature of which Happy just so happened to be both and so followed two weeks of brutal training that Short took a sadistic pleasure in applying.
Fortunately, Tonight would be a brief hiatus Solid Hoof had completed her task of providing Happy's armaments consisting of a European Bronze sword and a set of iron scale armor, Happy had just finished donning said armor when Captain Tempered Short burst through the door yelling obscenities “How Dare You, How dare a donkey brained shit head like you possibly believe you could skip out on MY training!” Short virtually screeched as she stomped up to Happy.
Hard Pill stepped in “Eclipse gave me explicit instructions to bring Happy to receive his equipment tonight.” only to become another target of Short's ire.
“Oh isn't that a surprise,” Short said in a sickly sweet tone that did little to mask the malice that permeated each word while she slowly rounded on the mare “I guess it's true, you two are attached at the hip I bet more than figuratively~.”
“And what exactly do you mean by that!” Pill exclaimed, stopping mere inches away from Short's face, Her bat-like wings flared, She snarled revealing two pearly white Fangs protruding from her upper jaw.
‘Fangs, how the hell did I miss that?’ Happy thought as he watched the two mares square up to one another, He knew full well that Short would resort to violence when questioned and attempted to apprehend the mare before she could strike.
His hand had only made contact with the Captain's armor before he found himself on his back, A dagger expertly slid in-between the iron scales of his new armor neatly embedded into his right shoulder along with three long gashes across the scaled metal surface of his chest no doubt from her hoof blades.
‘I should have seen that coming.’ Happy thought as Pill rushed to his side, he pulled the dagger from his shoulder, The leather lining prevented the blade from biting deep into his flesh leaving Happy with a sore chest and shallow cut ‘Well at least we know it works’ He thought to himself dreading his inevitable return to Short's nightmarish training, the aforementioned mare seems to have disappeared after her attack.
“I can't believe that dreadful mare Happy, are you injured, Can you stand?” Pill asked as she assisted him in standing.
He waved her off as he stood ‘I'm fine it's nothing serious, especially compared to what I'm going to be subject to now.’ He silently answered a twirling ball of dread forming in his gut.
That which he would soon find to be completely warranted, In her anger Tempered Short made it her mission to torture Happy, Even forgoing the other recruits In favor of this goal, so it was after two months of relentless one-on-one “Training” he found himself gazing down at his reflection in the barracks bath house, One of the few places in the Manor he had been able to witness his reflection, The whole place being curiously devoid of mirrors.
‘A mystery for another time.’ He thought lowering his bruised and scared body into the cool water, this being the last day of his time under Tempered Short he allowed his worries to be carried away on the water's gently shifting surface, Although that peace was inevitably short-lived and disturbed by the sharp cadence of a distinct set of armor-clad hoofs.
‘Oh no,’ Happy bemoaned ‘What the hell could she want now’ Happy thought, sinking deeper into the water in an ill-fated attempt to protect himself from the demented mare.
Tempered Short trotted into the bathhouse Sporting a smile that would make a demon cringe, Happy was sure she had come with malicious intent.
“Hello shit for brains, your whore not around to ride your hips?” She asked in a manner that made his skin crawl. Happy shot up filled with furious indignation as Short besmirched his good friend.
“Oh calm yourself I've come for a reason, I plan to leave you with a gift so you never forget our wonderful time together.” Her snarl of a smile exposed a set of fangs much like those possessed by Hard Pill a query he had still yet to solve, Nonetheless, he stood in defiance of her attempt at intimidation not to say he wasn't petrified of the mare, Just too full of pride to let it show.
‘Keep it, you rancid woman.’ He silently answered giving her a dismissive wave of his hand, The action doing little more than enraging the mare, Leaving Happy little time to react as she launched forward latching her jaw onto Happy's neck and sending the startled human plunging into the water below, Letting lose a noiseless scream as searing pain erupted from his pierced flesh.
The pair thrashed amongst the water both drowning as Happy grabbed hold of the small thestral mare tearing her along with a bit of flesh from his neck, throwing the mare from his body, Short slid several feet from the bathing pool before standing on all fours coughing and hacking up blood “Putrid I suspected as much, But now you'll never forget little old me” Short cackled through a blood-filled mouth as she made her exit.
Happy leaned against the far wall of the pool in near shock, Hand clamped firmly over his weeping neck but as the adrenaline left his body so did his strength, He once again let his body sink into the water's cool embrace only to later be found unresponsive slumped over the pools edge by Silent Echo who pulled him from the water and applied first aid to the injured creature, she didn't have to try hard to grasp what had happened the malicious Captain Tempered Short had branded the creature out of malice, an undoubtedly cruel action.
Happy awoke in the infirmary to assurances from Hard Pill that the ordeal was finally over; he had survived and been freed from Tempered Short's grasp.
Several days later, He was in decent enough condition to return to his room. The night after started oddly, The usual cold bowl of nutritional-rich slop had not been left outside. Thankfully it tasted alright but certainly nothing to write home about.
‘Not the problem right now’ Happy thought, and justly so, the guard and more importantly Hard Pill had not been present like usual, he had never been truly left alone, Always watched, Always followed he had noticed that early enough.
‘Do I take the opportunity to explore and possibly escape or just sit here?’ Happy asked himself silently weighing the pros and cons ‘Worst they just throw me back in here right ... .screw it, I'll take door number one!’ He joked to himself pushing open the heavy door he moved forward with ease already familiar with the corridors of the manor having been escorted through them many times, So it didn't take long to reach the back gate mysteriously also absent of the usual guards.
‘Where did they all go,’ He wondered, pushing past the small access gate beside the door. ‘Oh well,’ He shrugged ‘I better take the chance, well I have it’ Walking down the road the thought just kept picking at his mind ‘Something is off here.’ His slow pace transitioned into a jog, his nerves getting the best of him, several minutes of jogging through the city he took a corner at random and nearly ran right into a thestral mare.
It was Midnight Blossom “Happy!... What are you doing out here? Didn't Pill tell you about the recruit's graduation ceremony today”
‘No she didn't’ He silently replied, shaking his head from side to side.
“Geez, I can't believe that mare sometimes,” she said rubbing her forehead in exasperation “Especially after all the work she put into that outfit….” She paused and looked at Happy with a sheepish expression “She didn't say anything about that either did she?” Again, Happy shook his head no “Just forget I said anything and follow me.”
Happy hesitated, Looking out into the empty city he wrestled his thoughts ‘I'd hate to crush Pill if she's going through such an effort just for me…’ Happy decided against abandoning his friend, Sprinting to catch up with Blossom who was lazily gliding just above the street.
They swiftly arrived at the ceremony grounds, Happy was promptly brought to a room by a guard where Hard Pill had been waiting when he entered Pill quickly addressed him.
“Stars above Happy! You had me so worried,” Pill trotted forward and rested her wing against his back ushering him further into the room “I was just about to head out to find you when a guard told me you had been found and brought here by Midnight no less, What a coincidence right? but forget that for now,” Pill gently pushed Happy towards a chair that contained a dark gray military suit, Gold epaulets adorned the shoulders, the buttons made of bronze each containing a large rubie.
“I hope you like it,” she nervously rubbed her neck and continued “The girls helped me out with it, Cherry told me how it should look and Blossom helped me make it.” Happy had dressed himself while she spoke.
‘Your just too sweet Hard Pill and I'm the asshole that was just about to abandon you without even saying goodbye…’ Happy stared down at Pill.
“You don't like it do you…?” Pill asked, Happy responded by picking the surprised mare up with a firm hug.
‘Thanks, Pill, but what's it for?’ Happy set her down and gave a questioning gesture with his hands at the suit while tilting his head.
“Oh I forgot to tell you, didn't I? I asked Eclipse to let you participate in the ceremony and she said yes, she agreed that you deserved it,” Pill explained “We should get you in formation with the rest of the graduates, follow me.”
Soon Happy stood in line behind numerous similarly outfitted thestrals only recognizing Dark Cherry who occupied a space much further up in the formation, Before long he heard what sounded like a speech, he was too far from the entrance to make out anything in particular, But by the sound of applause and the slight rumble of the building, It must be good, Suddenly a pause then after a moment the procession began to move forward.
A name was called, Then a move forward, Rinse and repeat until it was his turn, The announcer called out his name the crowd started to applause, An applause that died as soon as Happy walked through the stone portal, The coliseum-like structure was filled ‘I guess I figured out where everyone went’ He mused to himself, His makeshift leather boots echoing over the mostly silent crowd as they begin to murmur amongst themselves, many in attendance had previously doubted his existence knowing only rumors and testimony from the few ponies that had seen him.
He reached the middle of the stage where the others stood at attention, several grand balconies adorned the wall they faced each respectively Housing one of the ruling Bloodlines, He recognized several, others he did not.
This time It was Crimson Striker who spoke. “My Friends, It is time we welcome into our ranks a group of extraordinary individuals that will no doubt maintain the peace and prosperity of our great city, now please let us once more applaud these great Mares and Stallions!” the ceremony went on for several hours, After which Happy met up with his friends, Namely Pill, Cherry, and Blossom. However, there seemed to be a fourth mare he did not recognize, she had a lean frame, Sleek black fur, and large penetrating pink eyes that locked with his gaze conveying a sparkling curiosity.
“Hi I'm Silent Echo It's great to meet you finally…well when you're awake that is.” She extended her hoof greeting Happy, Who accepted It with a firm hand and stern shake.
‘Nice to meet you too and thanks for patching me up.’ Happy silently replied to the mare.
Echo continued "I'm a part of the detachment heading out on Striker's Hunting trip tomorrow. I look forward to serving with you.”
Pill was surprised by this “Tomorrow I thought it wasn't for several weeks?”
“Yes, Striker decided to travel by sea aboard the Mercy's Veil instead of simply taking a chariot, Which makes the trip considerably longer.” Explained Echo.
Dark Cherry cut in “Bummer I wanted to take the big lug out to celebrate.”
Pill sighed “Sorry girls I suppose I have to go help Happy get ready for the trip, we'll have to celebrate when he gets back, I'll catch up to you all later, Follow me Happy.” He did After waving the girls goodbye.
The night went fast while Pill helped Happy get ready for a now much longer trip having to supplement most of his supplies from her personal belongings, Which was the catalyst for Happy to learn about Hard Pill's apparent love of erotic socks, Much to the mare's embarrassment.
The next night his journey was about to begin, Happy waited next to a large carriage with the other guards, Whom he was unfamiliar with he watched them take glances ‘I can't blame them for that I'd be curious too although this one might be a problem’ He thought looking at the stallion that was currently unabashedly staring at him, Happy gave the stallion a awkward waive, The stallion stood from his seated position a beaming smile while he trotted over to Happy.
“Hi I'm Clean Sweep,” He introduced himself. “We'll be spending a lot of time together so I thought it would be nice to get to know each other you know…oh and sorry for staring I just think you're interesting”
‘Weird, No one told you I'm a mute? Buddy, that's embarrassing.’ Happy thought simply staring down at the stallion unable to verbally respond to his greeting.
Lacking a response from the looming creature, Sweep took a tactical retreat “Sorry for bothering you um, Maybe we can chat later.” He moved on to talk with the guard he had been seated by before his awkward one-sided greeting with the creature Happy.
The sound of numerous hoofs alerted Happy and his fellow guards to stand at attention as Crimson Striker and his entourage marched past, Striker nodding in acknowledgment of the guards as he passed.
‘Looks like we're heading out then’ Happy thought as he reached down and grabbed his case loading it next to the other's luggage then he took a seat in the large carriage. The others took their seats as well, Happy was fortunate enough to have a seat next to the window, Allowing him to wave goodbye to Hard Pill when the small caravan of carriages pulled through, Then down through the city, out of a carved tunnel leading into the forest that surrounded Mount Vurdusk, The guards took shifts pulling the carriage Happy was spared this task not being compatible with the harness.
The first Leg of the trip took a total of three days, it was at the end of the third night their group of carriages had begun to near the small military-operated trading town, Wetwing.
Happy rested his metal face against the carriage's small glass window, lazily peering at the beginning of a fiery orange and red twisting sky while Clean Sweep chatted with another guard, Swift Caster.
The slim dark gray thestral was a skilled rune magic user sometimes that was uncommon but not exactly rare in the thestrals appointed to serve directly under House Crimson.
“So you really think it could do magic?” Sweep asked.
“I don't see why not. I mean if you look closely it's got golden runescript on its neck and you know gold is the best magic conductor, So I'd almost bet it could.” Caster replied while pointing a metal-clad hoof at the resting creature, causing the aforementioned creature to perk up, noticing that he was now the topic of the discussion.
‘What's going on now?’ Happy thought.
A third voice cut in, Projected in a timid upper-class accent belonging to a two-toned purple and black-furred mare named Reaping Plum, Whose mark consisted of a sickle piercing a plum.
“I would discourage you from this undertaking, I believe no good could come from teaching such a thing magic,” She raised a hoof towards Happy. “I mean you don't even have the faintest idea what it even is do you?” Plum calmly berated.
Sweep replied first “I'm not too worried about that if Striker's the one who decided to bring it along and you know it could be fun.” He said Shrugging at the mare.
Happy turned bodily towered Caster then gave him a thumbs up ‘I agree with him that does sound pretty interesting.’
Caster correctly takes Happy's action as avidity “See it wants to learn.” He said pointing his hoof at Happy mirroring plums action.
“Fine,” Plum scuffed. “What could go wrong.” She said with no small amount of sarcasm.
Caster dismissively waved his extended hoof “Don't worry I'll teach it something everypony does naturally,” Caster picked up his helmet with his hoof “Most ponies don't even realize they are using a type of levitation when they pick stuff up with their hoof, so It can't hurt to teach it that right?” He motioned Happy to move closer “Come over here and I'll show you how to do it.”
‘Alright, But don't try anything weird’ Happy thought standing up, His head nearly grazing the carriage’s wooden roof, He shuffled past Sweep, Stopping in front of Caster, Happy looked down expectantly at the mage.
“Big fella aren't you haha,” Caster chuckled nervously at the looming creature “Okay, So what they teach the magically impaired ponies is to imagine your forehoof is a pathway, Then will the energy in your body into that pathway, Once your magic or energy is concentrated in your appendage you should be able to grab hold of my helmet with your claw, Just remember not to use your digits.”
‘Alright, let's give it the old college try,’ He extended his arm. ‘Energy, Feel the energy,’ he flexed his muscles, Hand open palm trying to summon forth any magic. ‘I don't think it's happening.’ Happy thought shaking his head.
“Now try to pick It up.” Caster pushed his helmet into Happy's palm, Unknowingly completing a circuit with Happy's magic devoid body.
‘I think I feel it!’ It began at his palm, a tingling sensation like the one you get when your hands have gotten too cold, Happy looked to Caster, The stallion appeared frozen, Eyes wide in apparent shock as the magic drained from his body into the creature, Sweep acted first, jumping in between the two and shoving them apart.
“What in tartures was that!” Exclaimed Caster while he struggled back to his hoofs wheezing from the effort.
Happy sat where he had fallen, He could feel the magic around him, He could see its subtle glow permeating throughout all things and he could feel the magical void inside himself that hungered to be filled as if something had clicked into place, A dormant or perhaps until now non-existent need to consume magic. For a moment Happy saw the thestrals as nothing more than food. ‘What the hell did they do to me’ He thought, Vigorously shaking his head in an attempt to return to his senses.
“Will you all settle down in there!” Stoic Shield yelled from the front exterior of the carriage currently taking his shift pulling the vehicle. “You better get your act together we're pulling into Wetwing now.”
Sweep helped Happy to his seat tensing when the creature rested his hand on his back worrying what had befallen Caster would happen to him as well only relaxing when the biped was back in his seat. “So caster, What caused that to happen?” Sweep asked the disheveled stallion while he returned to his seat.
“I can only guess but I think the creature simply lacks any innate magic,” Caster answered rubbing his forehead attempting to strive off an emerging migraine.
“Impossible everything possesses some quantity of magic, Everypony knows that,” Plum said not believing Caster's explanation.
“You didn't feel what I felt,” Caster looked at Happy with a thousand-yard stare “Like I was losing parts of myself in an endless maw,” He answered with a barely suppressed shiver. “I could use a stiff drink that's for sure.”
Unaffected by the abysmal mood Sweep proposed a plan “I know a great drinking hole that we can crash once we are off duty.” The carriage slowed to a halt, they had arrived.
The thestrals exited first followed by Happy, Standing at attention outside Happy quickly drew the attention of many of the local population, Sailors and soldiers alike gawked at him several seemed unnerved and hastily went about their business, One particularly important-looking thestral mare approached the group, The guards saluted as she neared.
“Who's in command of this detachment?” The mare asked.
“That would be me, good Morning Admiral Tempest Blue.” Crimson Striker greeted the mare.
“Lord Striker, I was unaware you were due to arrive today.”
“Indeed. Now if you would be so kind I would like to retire, The day is already upon us.”
“Yes Lord Striker,” Blue saluted and motioned for the stallion to follow her. “I will instruct the guards to pull your carriages into storage until your return.”
The two left meanwhile happy and the rest of the accompanying guards collected their belongings and then after a short walk deposited them in a small prison-like barracks, the walls made of dull gray stones, the floor, and ceiling made of concrete supported by aged and rusted iron beams, Several coats dotted the depressing hall, But certainly not enough for all eighteen of them.
‘Man, this shits depressing’ Happy grumbled resigning himself to the floor and easily realizing the chance of getting a cot was slim to none, That and the size difference would leave the slung fabric essentially useless.
Just as he laid his head on his borrowed travel case Clean Sweep meandered up to his leg and gave him a light kick. “Hey come on let's go get a drink.”
Happy gave it a moment's thought ‘Yeah I could have a drink but you're buying,’ He stood up and gestured for Sweep to lead the way.
“Awesome let's grab Caster and head out.” The two maneuvered around the others in the crowded room until they reached Swift Caster. “Hey buddy wanna grab that stiff drink?”
“Sorry Sweep I’m just not feeling great, I think whatever happened earlier took more out of me than I thought I'll have to pass on this one.” Indeed the stallion did look worse for ware his complexion lighter, demeanor sluggish, and eyes unfocused contrary to Happy who at the time felt invigorated no doubt from the magic that was now coursing throughout his body.
“Well don’t worry about it, and try to get some rest you look like you need it,” Sweep said patting the resting stallion on the back. “I’m sure you'll be up and at’em in no time, see you later.”
The two left the stallion to rest, and under the morning sun made their way to the “Hole” Sweep had mentioned before a description that easily fit the Drowned Fish, the decrepit bar did not fill Happy with confidence appearing to be constructed of repurposed ship timber, Patches both new and old adorned its exterior like craters on the moon surface, the roof bowed down as if its age carried with it an invisible weight.
They passed through a set of batwing doors into a dimly lit interior, Wood beams sporadically supported the responsibly condemnable building from the inside, Sweep trotted over to the left side of the building which was noticeably dimmer than the right no doubt having largely to do with its occupants consisting of manly thestrals and some large bipedal dogs, to the right beams of light streamed through crown glass windows much more fitting for the pony races that thrived in the day filling the tables with unicorns, pegasi, and earth ponies several possessing the recognizable gold amour of an equestrian guard.
‘I wonder why they're here?’ Happy thought sitting down with Sweep in the dimly lit portion of the establishment soon after a dolled up thestral mare sauntered up to the two. “What can I get you to gentlebats?” she asked.
“Well take the house special and a bowl of plums,” Sweep answered.
“It'll be right out sweety.” The mare replied
Soon after their drinks had been served and plums provided the two happily drowned their troubles in surprisingly good beer and each chewed through a helping of plums, Happy leaned back in his chair and took a look over to the right of the bar ‘Why do I keep seeing all these equestrian guards could they be an occupying faction?’ One of the equestrians noticed him staring and leaned over to say something to his fellow guardsmen.
“Hey! Get that freaky ass thing out of here its bad enough they let those dirty fucking dogs in!” The earth pony yelled across the room pointing an accusatory hoof at Happy
“What you say mud pony!” One of the dogs responded with a howl throwing his chair to the side “Gut you good howler will!” the other dogs joined in jeering and slinging obscenities at the ponies, A pit started to form in Happy stomach as several dogs equipped themselves with anything that could be used as a weapon and made to advance on the equestrians.
Clean picking this moment to throw his own two cents in “Yeah we aren't gonna take that shit from you sun kisser!”
“And what the hell are you gonna do about it bloodsucker?” a unicorn jeered in response.
“I'll show you!” He yelled back and before Happy could even stand Clean Sweep had launched across the room his bare hoof firmly connected with the unicorn's jaw, A second later the establishment burst into violence paw and hoof collided, Chairs and tables were thrown, Magic projectiles blasted against the thick wooden walls.
Happy dropped to the ground to avoid an errant axe. ‘What in the hell did I get myself into!’ He thought crawling several feet before being accosted by the earth pony stallion from before.
“Your mine now monster!” The stallion roared rearing up onto his back hoofs no doubt in an attempt to trample him.
‘The hell I am.’ Happy thought sending his heel into the stallion’s carpus fracturing the bone cluster causing the guard to fall backwards with a painfilled scream. Happy jumped to his feet trying to locate his wayward drinking companion he pushed, shoved, ducked, and weaved through the brawl, He found Sweep raining blows on some unfortunate bastard just as he made to grab the thestral a force enveloped his neck slamming him into the beer and blood covered floorboards, His hands shot to his neck only to be met by nothing ‘Its magic the sonofabitch is choking me with magic.’ The culprit announced himself the unicorn that Sweep had sucker punched leered down at Happy, Lip split and oozing blood he spit onto Happys false face.
“We were told to observe and report back, but I doubt Celestia would mind if I took care of you here and now.” The stallion said leaning in confident in his ability to restrain the creature.
‘He’s trying to kill me!’ Happy thought in a panic ‘I got to stop his magic.’ That’s when it occurred to him, He could feel unicorn’s magic being pulled into his mask but that was slow and wasn't enough to stop his strangulation he had to do something desperate, His arms lurched at his assailant's neck like coiled snakes he felt the stallions magic as soon as his palms connected concentrating on the feeling he pulled at the intoxicating energy with all the willpower he could muster soon the constricting force around his neck flickered and disappeared.
Happy pulled the panicking unicorn’s head closer to his own, Locking his gaze against the feebly struggling pony, He could nearly see the manic thoughts racing through his mind as his own was filled with a newfound invigoration, But before the unicorn could meet his unfortunate end at Happys hand the batwing doors burst open as a metaphorical wave of thestral guards burst through the door separating and apprehending anyone in sight including Happy who took an armored hoof to the head bouncing his skull against the floor and sending him into unconsciousness.
Happy awoke strapped to a dolly wearing an Ill-fitting muzzle and thick iron cuffs he was currently being carted over towards the docks by Swift Caster and Clean Sweep.
Sweep noticed Happy had come around first “Hey, you. You’re finally awake, Sorry about the chains and stuff it's the only way Tempest Blue would allow us to take you onto the ship also you have to stay in the brig for the duration something about you potentially attacking ponies on the ship,” He shrugged “You really should have bolted when the dock guards got their, Like I did.” He said with no small hint of pride.
‘How the hell was I supposed to know that.’ Happy complained as they rounded a building the docks came into view Happy could see several ships being both loaded and unloaded one stood out compared to the other trade ships, A Barque that had been repurposed from hauling coal into a personal sailing vessel for House Crimson, Its name proudly displayed on its stern The Mercy's Veil.
The two thestral stallions carted Happy up the gangway and onto the ship escorting him bellow deck and into a strap-iron cage that had been fastened to the ship haul.
“Sorry we can't take the shackles off Tempest has the keys, Maybe we can convince her to be lenient and let you out,” Caster said trying to reassure the bound creature.
‘I won't hold my breath but thanks anyway,’ He slumped his back against the cramped cage that barely afforded him the room to stand as the duo trotted off to assist in loading the ship ‘I don't see how this could get any worse,’ He lamented before promptly cringing at Ill luck bringing thought ‘Damn I just had to go and say it didn't I.’

Alright here's another one hopefully it's not too much of a steaming pile lol, Thanks again for reading.
Chapter 6 - Scuttled Hope
Chapter 6 - Scuttled Hope
Inside Princess Celestia's office, a maid went about her work, she took a glance at her majesty's desk and spied three parchments laid out, The first held details regarding an event that took place in Mount Vurdusk, apparently an unknown creature had been summoned to the aid of Crimson Eclipse during an incident at the temple atop the active peak, It went on to read that no other information was available at the time mostly due to how secretive the great house had been regarding the incident.
The maid was intrigued, She took a cautious glance at the closed door and then continued snooping.
The second was a series of reports from guards that had encountered the creature, Missing enchantment after proximity, Eye witness accounts from two guards that the creature hides ruins associated with dark magic under a false face.
“It must be a horrific creature indeed if it passes dark magic, I can't fathom what the thestrals could gain controlling it,?” She wondered while she continued reading the last of the reports which quickly described an altercation between some of the royal guards stationed in Wetwing and several of the residents mostly thestrals and a handful of diamond dogs.
The creature had been a participant as well, Shattering one guard's leg and sending another into a life-threatening coma, onlookers reported that it was as if the unicorn's very life was leached away, The medical report noted that he was also suffering from near complete magic exhaustion.
The mare moved her gaze to the last document with a nervous gulp.
The final piece of parchment differed in that Celestia had written its contents laying out the approval for either the capture or destruction of the creature failing the former. “What a relief,” She let loose a breath she didn't know she was holding before she resumed cleaning “No doubt Celestia has everything taken care of.”
It didn't take long for Happy to become familiar with this new environment, A cage bolted to the ship hull in what he assumed was a storage room going by the contents, mainly crates, large burlap sacks, and other piled goods that rested in sorted groupings, The room itself was dark carrying a choking atmosphere divided by only a single beam of moonlight streaming through a bull's-eye window several feet from his cage.
‘I'm going to get Sweep back for this’ Happy thought laying in a curled position at the bottom of his rust-clad prison now a decent way into his third night aboard The Mercy's Veil and thus marking his third night clad in irons leaving his arms restrained behind his back, Clean Sweep had failed or perhaps the stallion never even tried to convince Tempest Blue to allow his release or at the very least removal of his restraints.
As Happy's mind began to harbor thoughts of violent revenge the dark room's wooden door creaked on its hinges and swung open ‘Speak of the devil and he shall appear!’ Happy preached sarcastically as Sweep sauntered Into the storage room absentmindedly taking bites out of a plum.
“Hey buddy, How are you holding up? Sweep asked in between bites.
Happy gave his silent reply while adjusting his posture into a seated position. ‘Oh you know just peachy, Being starved of food and drink for three days while simultaneously fighting off seasickness has been nothing short of fantastic.’
“Sorry about how long it took to check up on you, Tempest is a damn slave driver,” pausing to take another bite, He continued while chewing. “I brought you a canteen and some bread tastes like bark but it's better than nothing.” He said shrugging then with a wing he retrieved the aforementioned items one by one out of his saddle bag and stuffed them through a large gap in the cage.
Happy watched the bread and tin vessel get crammed through and then plummet to the awaiting floor ‘Nice one buddy, what did you think was gonna happen?’
“Well,” He shot Happy a toothy grin and shrugged “I'm sure you'll manage….anyway, I gotta get back to bunk,” He moved to leave grabbing the doors “Caster snuck a bottle of rum in his pack, but don't worry I'll make sure to take a shot for you so you don't feel left out.” And with a slight thud, the door closed leaving Happy alone once more.
Happy looked down at the bread, One would think, that after three days without sustenance, he would be ravenous, But to his surprise the opposite, he could feel his body teeming with energy, He attributed this to the magic he had taken from the unicorn in Wetwing, He theorized the magic had taken the place of normal nourishment, allowing his body to function properly, Hard Pill eluded to this, Saying shortly how the runes that are nearly enshrouding his skull contains within its exquisitely complex formulas a spell which provided him a sort of much-needed life support slowing applying healing magic to his nearly destroyed cranium.
This leads him to believe that in his current magically energized state overcompensated for his need for nutrition and simply kept his optimal condition, That and presumably whatever other enchantments his dementor woven into her testament of sweet cruelty.
Although he knew it wouldn't last long, with his new sixth sense for magic, he felt the energy flow through his body, Distinctly gravitating towards his head and disappearing after reaching his rune-filled face.
He was broken out of his thought by an abrupt thud against the deck boards above his head, Then he heard hoofsteps, muted shouts……… Then a silence that persisted just long enough to raise the hair on his arms.
Happy began to question the unseen phenomenon and concluded, That one might think the seven trumpets had been sounding because it seems the end of times had sprung forth from the ocean to consume The Mercy’s Veil.
The ensuing horrifying symphony of violence began to spread like fire throughout the ship, Screaming, Pleading, and bagging, Of weapons striking armor and all the accompanying sounds of violence, made manifest. He heard it all, Although muted by the aged lumber surrounding him.
The hours drained away like sand in a glass. Periods of silence reigned, Disturbed only by an ever-decreasing amount of violent one-sided-sounding encounters.
Happy heard hurried hoofs gallop across the planks above, Heading in the direction of the staircase adjacent to the storage room.
‘Maybe it's someone coming to get me out of here……probably just wishful thinking.’ A struggle broke out just outside the old wooden door. Happy’s heart picked up in pace like a piston beating against his ribcage.
A weight slammed against the door light from some dimly flickering flame flashed into the room at the sudden and brief gap. Happy saw briefly the solutes of two Thestrals locked in combat.
‘What the hell is happening on this god-forsaken ship.’ The door was slammed again, The hinges pulled slightly off the wall by the impact, Then again only this time a nail fell to the floorboards, Happy watched the portal with raptor-like attention while his body was flooded with adrenaline, his prosthetic face pressed against rust-covered iron, a short sword pierced the worn wood than in unsettling ease sliced halfway to the top.
A stream of gore blocked the flicking light from view on the floor, The remaining figure in the hall rescinded their blade from the door, The thestral then shuffled the body away.
Happy waited unaware of his held breath nor the sweat that began to dampen the collar of his long wool shirt, attention solely focused on the door as the mysteries thestral trotted back to the entryway, It opened slowly, ...creak…. The abused hinges groaned in objection as Clean Sweep pushed his way into the room dragging along with him Happy’s armor case.
“I knew a tenacious bastard like you would be alive,” He looked ragged, sections of fur ripped from his body revealed large dark purple, red, and black bruises dotted with small circular wounds slowly oozing blood. “I'll tell you, we're as good as fucked, I don't even know what to do,” He slowly closed the door winching at its cries then engaged the latch he trotted over to Happy with a visible slump. Pain, exhaustion, and abuse took hold of his lean frame he collapsed just out of reach of the cage.
Just as he went to bang his boot against the cage to try to rouse the stallion he heard shuffling outside the door, Happy paused, and the shuffling stopped, Happy tenderly tapped the cage in an attempt to secure Sweep’s attention while trying to avoid alerting whoever entered the hall.
‘Fuck.’ He cursed when his kick went unheeded by Clean Sweep, Instead giving notice to the being silently waiting out in the hall, That someone resided within, It slammed against the door relentlessly, Happy redoubled his efforts kicking against the rusting iron like a man possessed,
He refused to be easy prey for whatever was coming through that door.
‘I’m not getting through, Especially with my hands bound, it’s time to think outside the box… magic?.... worked last time, If magic can grip things maybe I can use it to pull something apart too?’ He felt the magic within, shift and flow into his hands heeding his mental demand, He gripped two spots on the right-hand cuff then flexing this ethereal muscle, He pulled.
‘Come on breAAAHHHH’
Failing to break the cuff, He instead created an arc between the two magically gripped locations, That branched out striking not only the chain connecting the two cuffs reducing it to slag but also his right hand instantly burning a trail of charred flesh.
The resulting electric shock caused his more physical muscles to spasm, snapping what remained of the chainlink, He fell to the floor clutching his mutilated appendage, pain forcing his mind to fad briefly, When he regained focus Sweep was at the cage trying to get his attention.
“Happy hey wake up! Come on, We don't have time for this I doubt that shelf will hold the door for long!”
Happy looked at the door an upturned shelf had indeed blocked it, Its contents had fallen to the floor. A wing struck his mask, he looked at his assailant.
“You need to focus! we need to get off this ship and to do that we have to get you out of this cage, Do you think you can do whatever you did to melt the cufflinks to the cage’s lock as well?”
Happy simply stared at the stallion and thought to himself. ‘Are you kidding me!? I don't ever want to try that shit again, Just look what it did to my hand,’ Happy brought his right hand in front of his false face. ‘It's destroyed…..wait what?.... I could have sworn it was a lot worse?’ Happy’s hand had somewhat healed, The deep charred wound had changed into a shallow pulsing gash. ‘Well, I'll be damned,’ He raised himself from the floor grabbing the rusted strap iron with his left hand, He looked back to the door, whoever was on the other side had not given up and seemed not to be alone, Going off the multitude of pounding against the now braced door. ‘Yeah that shelf isn't going to last long, Why the hell won't they just give up?’
He looked to his hand and then to the cage’s lock. ‘He’s right I have to get out of here or I'm dead, And worst of all I don't even know who’s trying to do it.’
“Just do it already we need to go that door isn't going to keep them out forever.” Clean Sweep pleaded with Happy to take action.
‘Fine alright! I'll do it damn, Try to stand back I don't know how to control this stuff,’ Happy pressed his back to the cage reached out his right hand, and attempted to replicate what he had done before, He noted he felt considerable less magic within him then he had had before when he used it previously, most likely it had been burned up to heal his hand. ‘Here goes nothing.’
He forced the magical energy to congregate within his hand, Small gold strands of static jumped about his hand before a thunderous clap erupted between him and the gate, A golden ark of magical lighting struck the lock in nearly an instant the lock had been vaporized and in a rare turn of fortune he had not been hurt in the process.
‘I can't believe that worked’ He cautiously pushed past the gate being cautious to avoid the bubbling metal near where the lock had been.
“Holy shit Happy I didn't know you could do something like that!” Sweep exclaimed in excitement at witnessing the displayed use of raw magic energy in the form of electricity, an extremely rare occurrence as most practitioners needed the use of a conduit to focus and form the magic into spells before even beginning to make the ethereal energy take form. “Let’s get you suited up, Trust me you'll need the protection.” Sweep motioned for Happy to come to where he placed his amor case.
Happy stood up on shaking legs then slowly moved to the case opening the clasps, ‘I'll at least feel a lot safer with this on.’ Before he began to equip his amor he used the blood soaked into his wool shirt as a lubricant to squeeze both the cuffs off his wrists allowing him to wear his gauntlets.
He quickly dressed in the armor ‘It seems excessively heavy, But I am thankful for the extra protection I'll agree with you there.’
The number of hooves beating against the door increased, No doubt a result of his not so quiet escape from the cage, the ensuing punishment was too much for the previously damaged door to handle, the hinge groaned and then snapped, the door fell forward over the downed shelf, the combined weight of it and the assailants, Crushing it with little resistance.
Happy watched as the thestrals attempted to crawl over the wooden obstacles, He was perplexed, Perplexed because it was not some unknown enemy that rushed to get through the doorway but his very shipmates.
“Happy! It's not them you have to fight, you have to kill them!” Sweep yelled as he rushed past brandishing his shortsword, Clashing with a crewmate to the right, His weapon piercing the bat pony through the chest.
Happy turned to his armor case and snatched his sword pulling the bronze blade from its sheath turned back towards the door and swung just in time to intercept a thestral stallion mid-attack, His blade bit into its neck and caught the spine, He yanked the hilt back and the blade slid out covered in a viscous dark green fluid.
Happy took a step back. ‘That's not blood, what happened to these guys?’.
The stallion's head fell to the side his neck folding over at the wound inside a twisting mass of blue and white lamprey-like creatures thrashed about the wound seeming to be intolerant of the open air outside the victim's body.
The life-ending wound did not completely deter the stallion his reasonably dead body rushed Happy causing him to trip over his footing in surprise.
‘SHIT!’
The zombie-like stallion clamored over his prone form, Its head swung wildly, Happy was unfortunate enough to catch a close glimpse at its face, though only for a couple of seconds the image was burned into his memory, In the pony’s large eyes rested not a glimpse of his soul but a vision of hell, rows of tiny twisting teeth dug out the orgain from the inside leaving nothing but a thin outer layer to protect themselves from the open air and leaving a harrowing spectacle.
He grabbed at the stallion's chest in an attempt to push the creature off, His gauntlets ripped through the remaining flesh, sinking untell hitting ribcage, Blood and rancid slime flowed down his arms. ‘They reacted to the air right,’ Happy thought well grabbing hold of each side of the host’s ribcage ‘How about we take a breather!’ pulling the protective bone apart caused its flesh to tear down its underbelly showering Happy in a tide of gore and parasites, soaked in gore his empty stomach violently dry heaved.
He quickly shoved the corpse to the side and climbed to his feet the ordeal already making him feel weak in the knees, another was quickly approaching, Its body appeared bloated, Its mouth forced permanently open by the sheer amount of parasitic creatures filling its now innard devoid body.
Happy brought his sword down onto its neck cleaving the large specimen in two, He stepped to the side as the lower body stumbled forward and with an overhead swing sliced its stomach down the middle once again spilling fluid gore and withering parasites onto the floor, He looked over to Clean Sweep who was dispatching his fourth attacker.
He turned to Happy and waved to him, “Come on we need to move before more come I think Crimson Striker is holding up in the master’s cabin, Let’s get him and get out of here.”
Happy gave him a thumbs up, ‘Sounds like a plan to me.’
“Let’s get a move on, follow me.” Sweep climbed through the doorway Happy followed close behind.
The hall was in disarray and littered with blood. “Just up here, be quiet I don’t want to deal with them if we don't have to,” They climbed the blood-slick stairs each step done with painfully slow precision, Peeking out at deck from the top of the stairs the wind howled with an approaching storm dark clouds swiftly swam across the sky, Sweep pointed his hoof at a set of impressive looking doors. “There it is the master’s cabin, all that's left is to sneak across the deck...easy right.” He crested the stairs and b-lined straight for the cabin about two yards across his hoof was entangled in a pile of rope causing him to trip entangling himself further. “Damn, Happy I’m stuck come cut me out!”
‘Hold still you goddamn fool, you're going to get us both killed!’ Happy rushed out of the staircase he quickly reached Clean Sweep and went about cutting the thick rope with his sword.
‘Whys is this rope so damn hard to cut’ While Happy focused on cutting, Sweep began to beat on his shoulder with his free hoof frantically.
“They're coming hurry, Hurry! No no no no!”
‘Got it!’ Happy cut the last rope, Clean Sweep shot into the air with a mighty flap of his webbed wings nearly avoiding the fate that befell Happy, Who was tackled to the floor by a mob of the hellish creatures.
“We're doomed.” Lighting streamed across the darkening sky, Illuminating the struggle between Happy and the creatures, He was outnumbered and struggling to remain unburied in a sea of bodies, The last Clean saw of Happy was his emotionless bronze face staring at him while succumbing to the relentless monsters assault.
“I’m sorry…” Sweep muttered before flying off into the distance abandoning all hope of saving his commander and companions.
Hidden behind a door Crimson Striker watched the Creature his daughter enslaved fall to a hoard of abominations. “I’m surprised the creature even made it out of his confinement, A sorry way to go, Fair thy well beast.” Rain now pounded against the ship, Striker watched as lightning blasted its way through the pile of ghouls, Striking along the deck of the boat and setting the ceiling below them aflame, the hoard once again rushed in on the creature, Its sword was swung, When that was torn from his hand he struck out at the monsters with his gauntlets, A golden glow began to emit around his false face created from the ruins below charging to cast a spell “I can hardly believe It can harness magic with such an intensity.” It made a mad dash for Its sword, It rolled grabbed the blade, Stood then swiped horizontally, Streams of golden electricity danced across the blade's bronze surface before tearing through the flesh of the consumed thestrals, once the blade sliced through the last thestral the remaining magic arched into the center mast blasting away its base causing it to topple into the deck crashing through the ships aged shell feeding the flames beneath them, smoke bellowed up from nearly every orifice.
“Amazing, To think the creature that saved my daughter only to be repaid with cruelty, now comes to my aid, Outnumbered in a hopeless fight, Yet It still struggles on despite all the odds,” Striker looked back at his broken wing, The reason he had not simply abandoned ship like the others had been ordered to do. “It faces destiny, and what of me? I wallow in fear hiding behind barred doors. No!, I say now is the time to act!” He rushed from the master's cabin to the creature’s side, Cutting down one of the monsters that had almost snuck up on Happy from behind.
“Come with me creature, We must abandon ship if we are to survive, fortunately, It would appear one of the lifeboats had been sparred in the carnage.”
‘Yeah, let's do that.’ Happy agreed and followed the stallion, reaching the lifeboat with little difficulty.
“On three we’ll release the rope!” Striker yelled over the storm. “One!” thunder cracked across the sky “Two!” a figure rushed forward jumping into collusion with Happy knocking him from the boat. “Three” Striker released his rope as Happy fell, His side of the raft plummeted, Following after he flung open his wings to arrest his descent forgetting his injured wing resulting in only his left wing extending and sending him into a tumbling freefall.
Happy hit the raging water with enough force to knock the prosthetic from his skull leaving him blind and directionless in the thrashing ocean.
In a crowded hall filled with tables, drinks, and fighting. Mercenaries of every make and creed gathered to hear from one of the regulatory bodies that governed the conduct of the demographic, many began to whisper amongst themselves trying to sus out the reason behind the rare announcement.
“You know what's going on?”
“I have no idea, hey how about you?”
“I was just about to ask you.”
“Think it’s got anything to do with those monster stories coming out of bat country?”
“Hey shut up I think the stiff is getting ready to speak.”
“Everpony please settle yourselves down, A decree has come down from on high, Celestia has put forth a contract on the head of one…..Happy?...Hey, bring the poster out.” An attendant ran into a side room to collect the poster, Chatter rose from the crowd. The unicorn attendant returned holding the large poster and a stack of small cloth copies in his magical grip.
“Thank you. Now then, where was I? Oh yes, the creature Happy, age unknown, magical ability unknown but is presumably able to use dark magic,” the assembled crowd fell silent. “Last known whereabouts sailing out of Wetwing on the Mercy’s Veil a ship reportedly lost at sea, so his current location is unknown.”
The attendant finished tacking the top of the poster to a notice board behind the speaker releasing the fabric from his telekinesis its rolled length unfurled, A bronze skull cast a baleful gaze down at the crowd.
“I heard that thing killed two royal guards, No way I'm going after it.”
“Yeah what do you take us for idiots, we're not monster hunters.”
“Listen! I haven't finished yet!” The speaker cleared his throat. “The creature is Wanted dead or alive for crimes against the crown and use of forbidden magic, For the extraordinary sum of five hundred gold!” The eager mercs pushed forward each snatching up a poster and rushing to get a head start on the other, A payday like this was a blue moon payout that only a fool would miss out on.
The hall slowly emptied a handful of occupants remained, some simply not interested, others hesitated at the reward thinking surely something with a bounty this large had the potential to pose a serious threat, and lastly a mare who had arrived late and was only able to enter after the stampede of ponies for hire had left.
Radiant Glow entered the hall her silver eyes almost immediately zeroed in on the rendition of Happy’s face, A shiver ran down the mare's spin, not of fear but excitement “It looks so intimidating!” she exclaimed prancing in place. “Oh, I hope I get a chance to fight it.”
“Glow can you at least try not to leave the rest of us behind?” Came a gruff but feminine voice from the doorway as two pegasus entered.
“Sorry, I just haven't gotten used to how slow you guys are yet.”She replied with a smile.
“Whatever,” The large pegasus mare dismissed the backhanded comment, Knowing the mare long enough to realize she hadn't meant anything, she was simply stating the facts as is to her. “What's got you so excited this time?”
“Oh is it showing? hehe, Nothing much I think a wonderful opportunity has been presented to us a bounty like this will put our company on the map, and that thing looks positively intimidating~, Get everypony ready… I want to get to it first.” With a skip in her trot, she walked over to the large poster tearing it from the wall to the displeasure of the watching attendant.
“Miss Glow, This is unacceptable behavior return the property at once!”
“I don't believe I will, Will you attempt to stop me?” She asked her tone betraying no emotion.
“UHh um I-Ill,” He stuttered his mouth was suddenly dry and he felt a static fill the air. “I'll have to apologize Miss Glow please feel free to take it.”
“Then don't mind if I do thank you Fetch bye-bye now,” She turned to the large mare “Come on Quartz we have to hurry, we head for Wetwing tonight, Somepony there will know the heading of that ship, Well get that, Then work from there.”
The remaining rope suspending the lifeboat snapped above the pulley, It landed with a large splash near Striker who had just breached the surface, Once the life-preserving vessel rested on the water’s dark surface Striker pulled himself over the side taking a moment to cough up the water he had swallowed he shot back to the side looking for Happy.
“Where is he?” He scanned the rolling water, Using the momentary flashing sky, and the rapidly burning ship to peer into the water's inky depths, He looked down the fire’s wispy light allowing him to see a bronze face staring at him just below the water.
“Uughh my heart.” He grunted the sudden surprise sending his heart into an unsteady palpitation. He clutched at his chest from the sharp pain and fell backward. His jaw clenched, and His eyes shot open ‘Oh Lady Luna is this it!?’ He thought panicking believing his life was nearing its end.

Chapter 7 - Cursed to Live Part One.
Chapter 7 - Cursed to Live Part One.
Happy could not stop himself from sinking, His amour combined with the weight of his thestral attacker relentlessly dragged him down into the depths.
‘I can't see!’ He screamed mentally trying to pry the parasite-filled stallion off his torso, meanwhile, the rope attached to the lifeboat wrapped around his ankle, then suddenly pulled tight, jerking Happy, causing him to gasp, Water rushed to fill his throat and lungs.
‘Shit I'm going to drown, Get off me!’ Happy pounded his fist into the thestral body to no avail, He began to choke his hands diverting to claw at his armored neck.
‘Not like this, I don't want to drown like a goddamn rat.’ Happy bemoaned while his body became unresponsive, his thrashing ceased, and then he went still.
Seconds later a distortion bubbled out centered on Happy's corpse, The thestral skin puppet attacking his armor floated away completely limp, and further away numerous fish turned bottom-up, The runic formula showcasing its original purpose blazed, Happy's mind returned to life pierced with pain from every conceivable angle, He panicked, Being dragged back from beyond the brink nearly destroying his mind.
The runes on Happy's skull and neck glowed. White hot, boiling the water that touched its surface and eating further into his skin while creeping closer to the bottom of his neck.
He reflexively opened his mouth to let loose his anguish, but his throat and lungs had already been filled with water.
A shred of sanity returned to his fracturing mind, he gripped the rope around his ankle and pulled, dragging his body to what he prayed was the surface.
The curse had begun to use the surrounding life as fuel preventing Happy's watery death, yet it did nothing to prevent his drowning, His face broke the surface of the water, fluid spilled from his mouth and nostril, His hand fumbled against the raft trying to find hold, Hefting himself over the boats edge he fell stomach first to the floorboards.
Striker’s heart relented its assault allowing some focus to return to his eyes, He could see someone else on the lifeboat. “Happy?” he droned weakly, but in his delirium, he did not see Happy but the visage of his great-grandmother Crimson Rune.
“Is this the depths to which our bloodline has fallen? Dying to a measly surprise, Pathetic.” The specter spat disdainfully, painting her face into a grimace.
“No, it’s… it’s just that my age is catching up to me! Yes, that’s it.” He stammered half trying to reassure himself more so than the allusion.
“Oh really and what have you accomplished? In your charge, the house has nearly fallen from grace, In my time I reigned over half of Vurdusk and now you maintain a fraction, Such dishonor must be hard to suffer, But it seems destiny has given you a chance at redemption in the form of this creature, Use it to restore honor to our bloodline or die trying.” Her ghostly form dissipated, Left in her place lay Happy vomiting blood and water, his body convulsing Striker climbed to his hoofs with the assistance of a bench and then stumbled over to the fallen creature.
“Happy you're alive!” He put his front hoofs on the creature's back and pressed, The leather lining of his scale armor compressing against its back forcing a greater quantity of water from his lungs. “Lamentable creature do not die on me, you can’t! I need you…I command you, To live! ” Striker screamed, And in his desperation, magic slipped into his words.
At once Happys body went rigid he shot to his knees skull pointed to the rumbling sky in a tortured howl, golden electricity arched from his gilded skull, A stream of steam spilled from his skinless mouth, and then he fell unceremoniously to his side, His head rested in such a way as to lock into an eyeless stare with Crimson Striker.
Striker could not recollect how long he spent locked into the creature's gaze, and to be honest he didn't wish to, A sparkle in the corner of his eye broke his near hypnosis-like state, He turned. “The mask!” He rushed to the side nearly tripping over himself before reaching over with his uninjured wing to retrieve the prosthetic from the water. He sat down momentarily relieved. “Wouldn't have lasted long without this would you?” He was unsure if he had directed that question at himself or the lame creature.
He slipped the leather strap back over the creature's head and affixed the prosthetic into place, Then returned to his original spot on the lifeboat before succumbing to his exhaustion.
They drifted along the water's surface for days, after a while what Striker had thought to be a corpse sat up, Happy lived. “Welcome back to the world of the living my friend, I had long thought you dead.” Striker greeted Happy through cracked sunbaked lips.
‘Did you even check? And Just where the hell are we?’ He asked while adjusting his body which had become stiff in disuse. He felt a sharp sting in his side, and cringed at the sudden pain ‘Damn must be where the lighting hit me, I'll have to try to get Caster to teach me how to control it… I hope he got out, I wonder if Plumb” His thoughts were interrupted by Striker.
“You know,” He paused to let out a dry cough and a pained grunt “Your timing could not have been better, Look over there I can just about see the shoreline now.” He limply held out his uninjured wing indicating for happy to look behind himself.
‘Yeah that's great and all but I don't think either of us is in any state to be bumbling around,’ Happy turned, His scale armor had formed a small layer of rust after being exposed to the aggressive oxidation effects of the surrounding saltwater making moving in it all the more taxing. ‘I mean I don't know if I can even walk, I can just barely feel my legs’ He looked over at the approaching landmass. ‘I guess that is a relief though,’ He relaxed against the boat's wooden railing ‘Wake me up when we get there.’
Night had fallen over them when the raft was beached, They dismounted the boat and hobbled up the shore into the dense woods, Under Striker's insistence after a short walk they managed to find a poorly kept dirt road.
Happy rested his weight against a nearby tree, His body now lacked the quantity of magic it would need to heal his wounds, He could feel the damp patch forming around a wound that ran across his midsection, and going off the pain he half-jokingly decided he would refrain from removing his armor in the off chance that it was the only thing holding his entrails in.
“Our fortunes are starting to look up my friend, No doubt, Soon a traveler will come riding down this road and bring with them our salvation.” He said brightly.
Happy looked at him then the road then slowly back to him not believing the Stallion could be so optimistic after what they'd been through. He scuffed ‘I'll believe it when I see it.’ His legs began to buckle under his weight, He slid down the tree, armor shredding against the bark as he went.
“I suppose we could encamp here if you're not well enough to continue,” Striker said looking over the ground seeking small dry sticks to start a fire.
‘Yeah I'll be honest with you, I don't think I'm doing great right now,’ Striker kept about his self-appointed task unable to hear Happy's response. ‘I don't… I don't think I’m…’ He accidentally tried to repeat. ‘Why’s my hand…so…wet?’ He thought slightly raising his left arm, a bead of blood ran down his gauntlet-clad hand before falling and soaking into the ground below. ‘Shit must be worse than I thought.’ His hand fell limp against a protruding root, Happy was surprised to learn that the tree possessed inherent magic, although weak it would help restore his body ‘Just have to absorb it’ He thought dragging the magic from the vegetation with slight resistance, as the trees leaf curled and yellowed, movement returned to Happy's hand and his pain lessened. ‘Thank God it's working. Now I just need to rest and let it do its magic.’
Striker returned with a load of sticks, He began assorting them in a pyramid-like stack and then froze, his ears stood alert pivoting to one side of the abandoned trail. “Something is coming down the trail and doing so rather fast.”
‘Who would be running down an overgrown trail in the dark?’
A cloth-covered cart came racing down the trail at its head an elderly thestral galloping as fast as his aged body would allow, he passed the two strangers with a worried glance, Exhaustion evident on his face.
“Hurry, we must give chase. He can provide us with the information we need to return home!” Striker said before galloping off after the cart.
‘Hey!’ Happy tried to call momentarily forgetting he was mute ‘Shouldn't we figure out why he’s running?’ A hollow-sounding howl cascaded over the dense forest and several more followed off in the distance ‘That must be the reason.’ getting to his feet ‘Better catch up.’ He thought, Jogging after, Slowed by a limp in his left leg.
Further up the dirt road, the cart had crashed one of the wooden wheels dislodged by a huge rock, Striker assisted the elderly thestral out from one of the wagon's harnesses when Happy approached Striker called out to him.
“Happy, he says Timberwolves had begun to stalk him and his wife through the forest, keep your wits about you, No doubt they are encircling us this very moment!” He yelled while scanning the treeline.
‘Yeah, I heard them back there, how the hell are we going to deal with that?’ He asked
Just as Happy was within arms reach of the distressed wagon a wooden jaw lurched out from the bushes on the right, Tripping him and dragging him into the nearby overgrowth, another grabbed him by his wrist, and the two wolves thrashed their heads attempting to tear the limbs from Happys body, in his shoulder near the top of his humerus his muscle ripped off his bone, Then with a sudden jerk from the wolf mauling his arm, it pulled the limb from the socket, Only Happy’s armor prevented the limb from being torn off.
‘Son of a Bitch!’ Happy reached up with his free hand and clawed at the wolf's face, his metal-covered fingers found purchase inside the wolf’s glowing green eyes piercing the organ and spilling magic-infused sap, Curiously this did not deter the wolf although it did give Happy some much-needed insight about the wolf's composition.
‘The damn things are made of magic,’ using the hand dug into the eyes of the creature, Happy began siphoning magic, and the wolf released his wrist and tried to withdraw instinctively realizing the danger the creature posed, Magic or allegorically its soul, is what essentially, allowed the timberwolf to possess a physical form such as a wooden wolf and without would cease to be.
Happy curled his fingers further into its eyes, preventing its escape. ‘Not so fast pal!’ once the magic was drained the wolf’s body shuddered and then crumbled leaving a pile of loose sticks, The wolf attacking his leg unarrested by the now-deceased wolf, dragged Happy further into the forest.
He reached for his sword, sliding it from the belt sheath at his waist he bent forward and plunged the blade into the chest of the creature then kicked its wooden jaw from his leg, It stumbled back and then crumbled as well.
‘Hopefully, that's all of them,’ He thought, planting his blade into the ground to leverage himself to his feet, he could barely stand on his right leg, And his left arm hung limp at his side, Now useless. Adrenaline clouded the pain allowing him to limp in a circle, glowing green eyes filled the forest accompanied by growling, barking, and howling.
The wooden wolf pack changed tactics now realizing the danger the creature possessed.
‘Back! Stay back,’ He held his sword out to ward off further attacks. ‘They are circling for a reason, it's a primal tactic I just need to wait for one to rush me while my back is turned’ He waited until he heard the rush of wooden paws, Then sprung around plunging his blade into the side of a lunging timberwolf, Using the momentum to pin it to the ground. Letting go of the sword he grabbed the wolf's head draining its magic, Another rushed forward and lept onto his back its wooden claws ripped scales from his armor, Exposing the leather lining.
‘Get off me!’ He grabbed the sword, pulled it from the wooden corpse, swung, and missed the retreating magical beast ‘I have to get rid of these things fast or they're just going to wear me down, I wanted to heal with it, But I won't get the opportunity at this rate’ Happy lifted his right hand, A whip-like crack followed by a continuous crackling roar carried over the forest as a sustained stream of golden lighting obliterated both tree and wolf alike.
A little ways off Striker leveraged his body against the cart, allowing the other elderly stallion to reattach the discarded wooden wheel. A sound pulled his vision off to the distance into the dense woods, a piercing light came through the shrubbery and undergrowth.
“Looks like he’s keeping them busy. Let's hurry and get this done.”
“Just one second, I'm almost done. I just have to tighten the hub, but I'm curious about something Lord Crimson. What is your companion, I've never seen anything like it?”
“Happy? He’s an uhh, well he’s,” Striker fumbled for an answer, the question catching him off guard, so he decided to be vague. “He is a knight of house Crimson and a warrior like no other.”
“Well, He’ll need to be to deal with the timberwolves in this forest, I would have never even thought to travel this abandoned trail if it not for my wife struck by a sickness, like so many others in our village she has fallen deathly ill, but as I was saying, The timberwolves have torn apart any bastard ignorant enough to attempt the journey.”
“How can that remain so,? Does the noble not provide for you and your kin?” he asked with a grunt while he adjusted the weight against his side.
“The ones in this area have run rampant for years now, Lord Crimson,” He paused to thread in a tensioning bolt “The nobles have all but abandoned us, and in turn guards no longer patrol this route. left alone the wolves have grown to be cunning, cruel, and resourceful, So I hope your companion is up to the task.” He dropped his wagon wrench and sat on his hunches.
The sound of battle drew near.
“Should you not flee, Have you given up on saving your wife?” Striker asked incredulously.
“Running won't save us now.”
Striker waited to respond. He looked towards the forest and then galloped to the sitting stallion.
“Get up, We have to move now!” He slammed his shoulder Into the wagon, and the other stallion jumped to his hooves and galloped after.
Happy struggled with a huge jaw of lumber that smashed his frame against the trees in the dense forest leaving a trail straight back to the road
The wolves combining to form a massive monstrosity was not something Happy would have foreseen and in this tiny oversight, the tide of battle had quickly turned in the timberwolf's favor.
The embattled pair burst from the treeline, The massive wolf lurched its head to the sky momentarily releasing Happy then clamped down on his leg during his descent, Happy twisted his frame extended his right arm, and blasted the beast's side causing a small fire to ignite.
‘Ha! I've got you now motherfu’
The wolf slammed Happy's body against the compressed dirt.
Thud, Thud, Thud, Thud.
It did so until the thrashing creature went still, then dropped the limp body onto the forming puddle of gore and armor fragments.
Looking back Striker saw Happy’s presumed demise, the wolf rolled against the dirt to extinguish the flame and then began its hunt again only this time noticeably exhausted from its fight with Happy.
“How far away is your village?’
“Not far possibly an hour or so at top speed, Do you think we can make it?”
“I don't know but we have to try, Happy bought us some time so let's not waste it.”
They ran as fast as their hooves would carry them thundering down the trail until exiting the forest, spittle flying from their mouths while they panted.
“Where getting close!”
“We should be able to fend it off with greater numbers” Striker suggested.
“I wouldn't get my hopes up.” He replied under his breath.
Abandoned Happy lay motionless, beneath him a system of roots that connected to nearly every organic growth in his vicinity, and like a straw, he used it to drink deep from the forest’s life-preserving magic.
His mangled form twisted back into shape, Standing after what seemed like an eternity he began his footslog, each step dragging more magic from the forest killing off whatever was close and leaving the hardier plant life wilted, thin scar tissue rapidly expanded to close his wounds, the persisting pain causing his contempt to fuel further the already raging flame in the pit of his being, determined to repay the beast tenfold he marched on.
