Between Small Bravery and Big Shyness

Several days had passed since the accident at Rarity’s shop. Rainbow had regained her normal size thanks to Fluttershy’s help, who had shrunk down again to make her shrink with her. This unfortunate event had awakened Rainbow to certain aspects of her personality. Against all odds, she much preferred to feel smaller than giant. Although more robust with this size, she had felt vulnerable, less free of her movements. Everypony had looked at her while she couldn’t do anything with her wings, heavy as she was. She couldn’t escape from their stares either, she could only wait for Fluttershy, or even Twilight, to come and solve this situation.

On the other hoof, when she was shrunk, really tiny at the sight of anypony, it was a real firework of emotions. Her freedom was increased tenfold, the ground was much less present because her wings only desired to twirl in a very small room, which was like a hangar for her. She was almost invisible, nopony could really enjoy her acrobatics, but it opened a lot of doors for her in terms of pranks. What excited her the most was seeing the world differently. A world with fewer obstacles. And to see Fluttershy so big for once, it made her particularly happy. Ever since they got to know each other, the yellow filly never really put herself forward. Seeing her bigger made her more present, stronger. Rainbow didn’t dare admitting it to herself, but perhaps she had liked this sensation of protection she’d felt the first time she’d hidden in Fluttershy’s fur. It was a special feeling for her, one that she knew all too rarely. And of all the ponies, feeling it with Fluttershy was surprising deep down. She felt even smaller, minuscule, as if she kept shrinking on the shy yellow pegasus. That, of course, multiplied her feeling of freedom and self-assurance. Everything was perfect.

But since the accident, Rainbow had sought to avoid new adventures that would alter her size. The memory was still all too present.

This morning, Rainbow went to the Sugarcube Corner. Her healthy diet prevented her from eating too many pastries, but she definitely couldn’t refuse a few delicacies from time to time.

“Three extra coated maxi chocolate éclairs, OK!” Pinkie exclaimed.

“Quiet down Pinkie!” Rainbow growled.

The pink pony gave Rainbow a large box while Rainbow gave change. Greeting her friend at the counter, the blue pegasus seemed like heading for the door before stopping there, thinking. Her stomach was rumbling, she hadn’t eaten anything yet since she woke up. She decided to stay a while and sit down at a table indoors.

Opening the box, she discovered three éclairs that looked super caloric. Chocolate of all kind covered all the pastries in a way that was both elegant and generous. In front of that, Rainbow had no choice but to start on her snack. The éclairs were perfectly delicious and she couldn’t help but begin the second éclair after devouring the first one.

The second one was even better, but was finished in far fewer bites. On closer inspection, the third éclair looked less massive than the other two. She could lift it with just one hoof when she had needed two before. Being still hungry, she ended up eating the last éclair with relish.

Looking at the empty box before her, something distinctly startled her. The box also looked smaller, as well as the table, and… Risking a glance at the counter, she noticed that everything had shrunk. And she knew very well what that meant, because she had the same feeling a few days ago.

“Pinkie! Your cakes are making me bigger!”

“If you eat too much, perhaps,” the pink pony replied, looking elsewhere without noticing her. “Gummy has gained another pound on the scales, I give him only mint candies in the meantime, there’s less sugar in it apparently.”

“Pinkie!”

Unable to get the attention of her friend who was too much busy preparing orders, Rainbow could only notice that she continued to grow during this time. She was already three times her original size, her belly causing the small table before her to tip over and her hind hooves now touching one of the walls of the room. In front of the counter, two or three customers were staring at her open-mouthed. One of them even preferred to leave, for fear of getting bigger too, probably.

That’s it, Rainbow thought to herself, it was going to happen again. She was going to grow a lot again and obviously be the center of attention. Maybe, to monstruous proportions. Faced with that thought, the pegasus panicked a bit and tried to reach the exit door without tipping over too much furniture. In spite of all her precautions, her flank met the ceiling light, which almost fell, and her hooves knocked over a few chairs. Arriving at the door and continuing to grow, Rainbow crouched down and crawled to pass through the opening.

With her head out, she pushed her front hooves through the door but her continued growth blocked her torso; her behind got stuck inside while she was still growing. The customers had spread out against the walls: there were in front of them a flank and two long hooves in sitting position against the sides of the door. Rainbow’s tail had become huge as well, shaking in all directions and brushing every wall of the room. Pinkie Pie still wasn’t aware of what was apparently going on. Rainbow had no choice but to change her position by extending her hooves against the floor, getting into a more lying position that diminished the width of her body. However, the tips of her hooves met the counter and pushed it violently, which unsettled Pinkie. Rainbow took this opportunity to get out of the shop completely, finally freed. Straightening up, Pinkie realized the mess in the room.

“I’d put less caffeine in the éclairs tomorrow…” she said to herself, dazed.

Standing up as well, Rainbow could only notice her size. Her mane now reached the top of the Sugarcube Corner and she was still continuing to grow. Not thinking twice, the blue pegasus set off for Twilight’s castle, eager to find a quick cure.

Her walking through Ponyville, however, was not an easy task. Slaloming her flank between houses, avoiding narrow alleys, she was also careful not to hurt anypony. With her eyes looking continually downwards, she watched the other ponies move away from the reach of her hooves while looking at her, risking stiff necks. The farther she went, the more the ponies and houses seemed to shrink. She was beginning to get three times taller than the roofs, which was equivalent to twenty times her original size. As she grew, her hooves started to make a thud, shaking the whole village, leaving large impacts on the way. She looked more and more like a monster who would have come to terrorize the inhabitants with her coming, except that this was a young mare well known to them, whose flank now loomed above the thatched roofs.

Rainbow Dash felt less and less comfortable as she progressed. Her hooves were as big as houses again, just like last time. She was feeling the heaviness of her walk, she knew that she was surely weighing a few dozen tons. She did everything she could to avoid stepping on anything and managed to do so against all odds. Very focused on her walk, she was surprised to receive a small blow to the face, close to her right eye. This shock made her stop as a precaution and raise her head. In front of her pupil was a tiny grey pegasus in a mailmare outfit. Rainbow Dash knew her well, and she was astonished to see her so small, now as big as one of her eyelashes. The tiny pegasus recovered from her shock and flied away, passing in front of the giantess’s huge pink iris, still quite dizzy. This made Rainbow’s apprehension even stronger, imagining all the heads raised to the sky at that very moment. No choice, she had to keep going.

The houses kept shrinking from her point of view, she could have included five of them on just one of her hooves. Her four hooves were placed on large squares, which allowed her to do less damage. Observing now that it was easier for her to step over all the houses to reach the external border of the village, Rainbow began to lift two of her hooves with the utmost care. She looked carefully if anypony was in the targeted location, before gently dropping her hooves away from the houses. The other two then followed, leaving Ponyville and its occupants a little safer.

With the field clearer, Rainbow was finally able to reach Twilight’s castle in just two strides. She began to sit down, trying to place her flank on the ground as gently as possible and to move her tail away from the houses as not to hide the sun to the other ponies. The castle was five times smaller than her; her shadow was enough to plunge it into darkness in broad daylight. She also noticed that her growth had finally stopped: now five hundred times bigger than her original size.

Twilight Sparkle was immersed in reading a complicated book when the shadow rose over the entire castle. She couldn’t read anymore because it was so dark and she looked out from the balcony to see if the weather suddenly became cloudy. To her big surprise, she didn’t see the sky, but sky blue everywhere. That hue seemed to move a little, and she made out a huge multicolored bolt of lightning that was well over six stories high. Rightly guessing that it wasn’t a very large poster but a certain pony, she rushed to the front door.

Outside, she was greeted by a huge blue mass, Rainbow Dash’s face really getting lost in the heights this time. Right in front of her, Rainbow’s four sitting hooves looked like huge structures: one of Rainbow’s hoof soles was fifty times bigger than Twilight who was just an ant compared to it. Rainbow began to lie down, her head getting closer to the ground. Her flank now faced the castle and was higher than it by twice its height.

Twilight was about to take off to reach Rainbow’s ears and be able to communicate with her, however something tapped her hoof. Looking down, she saw to her astonishment Angel, Fluttershy’s white rabbit. He wasn’t very tall; a single hoof was already enough to lift the small animal. Angel pointed to an area on his back. Twilight squinted and made out a small yellow speck on it. It looked like a piece of fluff, but looking at it closely, it was actually Fluttershy, miniaturized to the size of a flea. She’d come all the way from her cottage on the back of her rabbit with that size?

Fluttershy spread her wings and made her way to Twilight. Remaining motionless, the purple alicorn realized that the pegasus was heading towards her ear. Twilight took the opportunity to cast a voice amplifier spell to listen to her friend better. She lowered hers on the same process.

“Twilight? Can you hear me?” Fluttershy asked once she reached inside her ear.

“Yes Fluttershy, what’s going on? Why are you so small?”

“Oh, I’ve shrunk to help tiny companions that I couldn’t help until now. But now everything is fine, the colony is doing better.”

Ok, Fluttershy looked like taking care of the bugs now, Twilight thought.

“Then the ground started to vibrate and shake a lot! In the heat of the moment, I climbed on top of Angel who was supposed to take me to the source of these tremors. I was all excited like a flea and I didn’t think about growing back, to be honest.”

It was the case to say so.

“But Twilight, where do these earthquakes come from? And what’s all that blue around you?”

“That blue, that’s Rainbow, she’s grown again and it’s even worse than last time!”

“Oh no!” Fluttershy exclaimed. “I know she doesn’t like it, we need to get her shrunk as soon as possible!”

With that, Twilight took off and flew over the blue giantess. She reached the inside of her ear and cast her voice amplifier spell to make herself better heard.

“Rainbow? It’s Twilight. Hang on, we’re going to get you back to your normal size!”

“Make it quick! It’s a real nightmare!”

Like last time, Rainbow Dash had curled up with her hooves crossed, trying to occupy as little space as possible. She never thought she’d have to face this ordeal like that again.

“I’m going to cast a spell to make her shrink, get ready Fluttershy!”

Twilight concentrated her magic in her horn, which began to glow. Releasing the spell after a few seconds, an aura applied to Rainbow’s entire body before dissipating. There seemed to be no effect.

“Shoot, it doesn’t work,” the alicorn pointed out. “Fluttershy, could you make her shrink like last time?”

“Okay Twilight,” Fluttershy agreed.

“Stay in my ear though and shrink me with Rainbow. I think it would be safer for you since you’re already so tiny.”

“Alright!”

Fluttershy began to focus on shrinking beyond a thousandth of her size. It seemed to work, as the world grew bigger around them. However, instead of remaining stable from their point of view, Rainbow’s body seemed to grow even more. The opposite effect of what they expected was happening right before their eyes. One of Rainbow’s hooves had come close to crushing Twilight’s castle like a mere pebble.

“It doesn’t work either,” Twilight advised. Make us grow again.”

Fluttershy gave Twilight her normal size back. This time, Rainbow seemed to shrink, regaining her height towering over the castle by only a few hundred feet.

“Oh, wait. Fluttershy, would you like to make us grow a little more?”

Twilight gained about thirty feet and Rainbow seemed to shrink in size again. Her hooves only reached the first balcony of the castle now.

“Fluttershy, I feel like there was a peculiar magical phenomenon the last time you both grew during the accident. Rainbow Dash seems to react to your changes in size, but always the other way around. Kind of like an equivalent exchange. When you shrink, she grows and vice versa. My magic really shouldn’t work like that normally, it’s like you two share a special bond… When was the last time you changed your size, other than this morning?”

“Since the accident, I haven’t used my power until today indeed. So, if I understand correctly, I need to get back to my normal size for Rainbow to regain hers?”

“Exactly!”

“Okay,” Fluttershy agreed, closing her eyes.

“All that’s left to do is… No, Fluttershy, don’t make me grow with you, you might… Wah!”

A few seconds later, Fluttershy opened her eyes. She was back to her original size right in front of the entrance of the castle, and Rainbow was right next to her at her original size as well, still shaking from her experience. The yellow pegasus hurried to her friend to reassure her.

“Rainbow, we did it, you can open your eyes now.”

Rainbow did open her eyes and found Fluttershy next to her, the castle towering over them.

“Oh thanks Fluttershy, I couldn’t stand being that heavy and immobile! But… why is it so dark?”

With that, they turned their heads to the same side, noticing a sort of large purple wall blocking their view. It was actually Twilight’s hind hoof that almost towered above the castle on its own. It wriggled a little, the tip of the hoof trying not to touch the small edifice, also showing Twilight’s lack of confidence in her gigantic form.

“Fluttershy? Can you make me shrink? I think I replaced Rainbow…”

“Oops!”

Fluttershy joined the giant alicorn over five hundred times her size and quickly set to work. Taking into account the latest explanations from Twilight, she took special precautions before shrinking. Instead, she preferred to grow first. Gradually, she grew to Twilight’s size. Rainbow Dash, meanwhile, felt herself shrinking to no bigger than an insect. That suited her much better. It wasn’t until she became a giant that Fluttershy began to shrink Twilight with her, and everypony regained their original sizes.

Following these events, Fluttershy invited Rainbow to her home at the cottage for the evening.

“I’m sorry Rainbow,” the yellow pegasus apologized. “I shoudn’t have shrunk so much this morning, I didn’t know it would affect you from that far.”

“Don’t worry about it, nopony could have guessed after all. I even blamed Pinkie’s pastries at first!”

“Speaking of pastries, could you get all the ingredients in the kitchen to bake a cake? I’m sure all of that has whetted your appetite.”

Fluttershy wasn’t wrong, Rainbow’s belly was already protesting with a few gurgles.

“Okay, consider it done!”

“I’m joining you right after I’ve made sure everyone is back in their pens…”

Rainbow Dash entered the house while Fluttershy was looking at the chicken coop and checking if no more animals were left outside with nowhere to sleep. Observing that everything was perfect, Fluttershy pretended to walk towards her home before stopping after only a few steps.

A thought came to her mind. Rainbow Dash would surely have a bad memory of this day, and she couldn’t help but feel partly responsible in some way. She had known Rainbow’s likings for some time, and one of her thoughts suggested to somewhat reverse the mood of the evening. At least, she could still please her friend in some way. Fluttershy trotted away at a resolute pace to a larger part of her domain.

In the kitchen, Rainbow had prepared a few pots and pans, chocolate and eggs. She was looking for a small bag of flour and finally opened the right cupboard a little higher up. Raising her hoof, she did not seem to be able to reach it strangely. So, she used her wings to reach the flour, but the bag suddenly felt heavier and bulkier, causing her to fall and spill the content of the bag. The flour spouted all over the room and Rainbow opened her eyes again after rubbing them. She noticed that the small bag was now up to her size: she was completely covered in flour and as small as a tenth of her original size. Angel, who had heard the noise, came to see what was going on. Given her diminutive size, Rainbow looked almost like a little white rabbit next to him. It was kind of weird, but Rainbow enjoyed being so small after everything that happened. And she also guessed to whom she owed this. The kitchen had become a little darker for some reason.

Exiting the house, the mini-Rainbow joined the backyard of the cottage. There, she saw a pegasus ten times bigger than usual, but a hundred times taller than she was. She had laid down and was watching Rainbow landing on her flank, right next to her huge Cutie Mark. Rainbow Dash looked very small to her, similar to the size of a ladybug on her coat. She could discern her delighted look.

It was enough to make Fluttershy happier. Indeed, in order for Rainbow Dash to shrink, she now had to grow herself to enormous proportions. Although she was insecure at first when she had grown to this extent, she had gradually become accustomed to it, and was even beginning to enjoy becoming so tall. She liked to shrink too, but the feeling of insecurity that came with that size still embarrassed her a bit. When she was a giantess, Fluttershy felt much stronger and safer, she also wanted to make good use of her very big size to protect those who counted the most for her. Becoming gigantic was now a pleasure, as she wanted to see the world from a littler higher without the risk of falling. At least, as long as the glances weren’t directed at her either. So the end of the day was particularly conducive for her to grow, and it seemed to please Rainbow too.

“Fluttershy, you’re super cool,” Rainbow said as she laid down comfortably on her coat.

Fluttershy blushed a little and focused again on these words. She began to grow again, and Rainbow was shrinking in the process. Soon, her hoof was several dozen feet higher than her house as she had grown so much. Rainbow Dash had become completely invisible, hidden within her fur, like being a part of her universe. It was feeling nice, finally the cake should wait a bit.

As night set in, everypony dozed off quietly. And two ponies, in particular, dreamed of small and big adventures together.
