A Jeweled Sky

A soft breeze swept the cool night air, brushing against the Princess of the Night’s fur. She shivered at the feeling, preferring the cool night air to the heat of the day. She smiled in delight as the little fireflies floated about, sometimes darting out from near her hoof when she took a step in the grass.

Luna’s night looked enchanting as ever. She prided herself in her serene realm, the deep colors, tranquil quietness, nocturnal creatures; she couldn’t choose a single thing of her domain to be her most loved.

One strong contender, however, was the sky. The moon hung elegantly in the darkness, its silvery glow illuminating drops of mist on the grass. A part of her. She could feel its connection from thousands of miles away, embedded in her magic. The moon was her magic.

She glanced at the area around the moon, at the small dots of light, the stars. She couldn’t express how much peace she felt staring up at the stars. They were hers, just like the moon.

Luna gazed at them for a little longer, a thought creeping into her mind. When was the last time she had arranged the bodies in her darling sky?

Nothing looked wrong with them, of course, but she felt something spark in her, telling her something could be done with them. Luna noticed them twinkle, almost as if in response to her thoughts. Yes, it was about time for her to do something with them.

She turned the whole of her attention to the vast darkness above, feeling the connection not just in her horn but in her whole body. Sending her magic up to the night sky made her soul feel like it was flying, and that feeling was more literal than she thought. She opened her wings to let the soft wind brush her feathers, adding to the soaring feeling. Luna stood tall and proud as she felt her magic drift from her horn to the sky above.

She knew she had control of every aspect of the night sky, and she had for centuries; but somehow, she didn't know quite where to start with her decoration. She gazed at the individual stars, trying to get a sense of where to place them.

One in particular caught her eye. It was a rather large star, its flickering very noticeable. She focused her attention on the gaseous body, holding it gently in her magic as if wrapping it in a blanket. She studied the area around it. Five dimmer stars surrounded it, their glows and flickers not as bright. A small smile graced her face as she moved the larger star to the smaller ones.

She stared at the group of stars for a moment. The dimmer stars were a bit spread out and almost in a circle; Luna had placed the larger star in the middle of them. She decided to bring the dimmer ones closer together, into a tighter circle around the bright one.

She grinned as she did so. The dimmer stars seemed to have gained extra glow from the larger one. Together, the six celestial bodies shimmered and lit up a small patch of the night sky with their newfound positions together. She felt a warmth in her heart, the six stars were reaching down and gracing her with their light from miles away.

Luna's night sky had changed a lot in the centuries she had ruled over it, but not many ponies seemed to notice besides her. She could point out the differences between the modern sky and the one a decade before it. Decorating it was something she did more often when she was younger, before her banishment. Before she developed the belief that no one appreciated the source of her magic. She was hurt by the amount of effort and love she had put into arranging the sky, and the little recognition she got for it. She decorated her sky now, as a pony now grown and changed from her previous ways, purely out of love. Her sky was something that could never be taken from her; not even by her own wrath.

She refocused and looked back at her sky, analyzing it for any stars or objects that stuck out to her. She glanced at an arrangement of stars and noticed they were in a pattern. A constellation. The fact that there was a specific word for stars seen in a pattern made her light up. The fact that someone had noticed her work, and it affected them enough to cause the creation of a new word. She also remembered astronomy, the study of the night sky, another thing that made her feel like she was glowing as bright as the moon and stars combined. It was something that touched her very soul; other ponies could love the sky the way she does so much that they want to dedicate study to it. She smiled, knowing that she wasn't overshadowed like she had once so foalishly believed.

Luna blinked, refocusing her thoughts again, the smile still spread across her face.

She looked up at two large stars to the far left of the six stars she had arranged together. They glowed bright together, their combined light casting a divine glow to the space around them. Gravity had done its course and pulled them close together, where they hung in each other's company happily. She had no arrangement to do here.

Except for the space around them; it was mostly bare sky, no other stars for them to bless. The night princess pulled a few stars from the right of them, guiding them closer to the space between the six stars on the right and the two to the left. She thought for a moment, and scattered a few farther around the colony of stars. Maybe some of them would want more space, but they could still all glow together.

In the small town of Ponyville, a pony woke from her peaceful slumber feeling hungry and slightly distraught.

She was having a good dream. From what she remembered, she was laying on her back in the grass of a field, looking at the stars. She rolled off her back and onto her hooves, hovering herself slightly with her wings. She thought the air felt extra good tonight. In fact, everything felt extra good tonight. She felt an excited shiver run from her hooves, up to her wings and head. Her wings elevated her higher. Her pegasus instincts naturally drew her to the sky, but something about tonight's sky seemed extra special, like it was sending a lot more love than usual down to the ponies of the land below.

And then she woke up. She rubbed her eyes and sat up in her bed, her pink mane falling in her face. She pushed it away with her hoof and rubbed her eyes.

She walked out to the kitchen, not bothering to turn on any lights. She knew the kitchen like the back of her hoof, and she knew exactly where the carrots she craved were.

She returned to her room from her sleepy expedition, sitting in her warm bed and crunching on carrots in the dark. Night was her favorite time because of how quiet and peaceful it was, but she liked it at the same time due to the secrets it held, casting a grand shadow over the world like a blanket. She thought it was ridiculous to look at this as a bad thing. Night covered her in safe shadow, where she went unseen to anypony in her dark room, where she could peacefully be her strange self.

She noticed a glow from the window and reached a wing over to push the curtains aside. Her eyes went as wide as the moon from the sight before her.

She had always adored the stars. Constellations were something she was very interested in as a filly, she always found them mesmerizing; but this was something else. The stars seemed as if they had been purposefully moved together, as if some loving force had guided them all into a glowing community. They stood proud in the sky with the knowledge that somepony had loved them so much to arrange them to where they could cast their glow across the darkness together.

The pony quickly pushed open her window and stared up in adoration at the sky, a smile growing on her face as she took in the sight. The stars shone down on her, lighting up her face. She felt like they were all looking back down at her, brightening her view together.
