Episode Sixteen: Dragons, Part One

Fluttershy looks distressed, clutching her head in her hands with her knees pulled up to her face. "How did you convince me to do this?" she whimpers.

"You don't have to do this," snorts Rainbow behind the camera. "Anypony that knows as much about dragons as you can do this easily. It just so happens that you're Equestria's leading expert on dragons."

Fluttershy tightens her grip.

"Look, Ember promised that we'd be given all of the safeties, we're meeting with dragons the same size as us, and Twilight even cast that spell of fire protection on you. At the very least, you can trust Twilight, can't you?"

Fluttershy groans pitifully, sinking back into her bench. "Of course I can. It's just... Dragons? Why did we have to put dragons on the list?"

"Because dragons are awesome?"

The train comes to a stop, and Fluttershy unbunches herself to disembark the carriage. As they step off, there's a white dragon with blue spines waiting at the platform with a cardboard sign. The sign very clearly has the word "ȽʟuteƦSchÍ" written on it.

"Looks like there's no one here to pick us up," says Fluttershy, trying to push her way back onto the train. "Better luck next time..."

"Fluttershy!" calls the dragon, waving. "Over here!"

"What about that guy?" asked Rainbow, blocking Fluttershy's escape. "He seems to be ready to interact with you."

As the dragon approaches, Fluttershy is made to turn around and face him. "I recognise you from your show. I can't believe I'm meeting you, at last." He grips her hand and shakes it. Looking at her, one might assume that he was shaking her whole body.

"You know, that's not how you spell her name," pointed out Rainbow. "That F at the beginning is upside-down."

The dragon looks at the sign. "Oh. Sorry. I'm not good with pony letters. In our Alphabet, it's just five letters."

"It's fine," waves Rainbow. "We knew what you meant. Now, let's go see this place you rented."

"Right. It's just across the way."

It's not just across the way, but a few blocks down from the train station. The town seems to be filled with Equestrian citizens, but they're familiar enough with the dragons that no one really bats an eye. It's not even odd when he turns the key in the lock.

"Guys, she's here!" the dragon calls as he enters the house.

Two more dragons show up, one from a guest room on the second floor, and another from the back yard.

"Oh, fuck yeah!" calls the one from the back. He's purple with dark red spines. "I'm Obsidian. You can call me Sid."

The one from upstairs is more dark brown, but his spines are bright red. "I'm also named Obsidian. I go by Ian."

Rainbow turns to the one that brought them here. "Let me guess, your name is also Obsidian, but you go by Ob?"

He shakes his head. "Nope. My name's Shard. That's short enough that I don't need a nickname."

"Uh huh. Well, I'm Rainbow Dash. I'm filling in for Twilight because she's busy. Princess stuff, am I right?"

The dragons all look at her blankly. "Who?"

"Princess Twilight. You know, the current ruler of Equestria?"

"We know who she is," answers Sid. "We don't know who you are."

"What!? I'm a nationally ranked flight champion! I've won more gold medals than most ponies ever see!"

The dragons shrug and turn to Fluttershy. "Is she qualified to run the camera?" asks Shard.

Fluttershy nods sheepishly.

Rainbow growls under her breath. "Just start the show, already. We can talk about the ways in which I'm disappointed in all of you later..."

"I didn't mean to disappoint you, Rainbow," whimpers Fluttershy.

"Not you, the other three!" Rainbow groans in frustration.

The dragons turn and look at each other. "Sorry about that. How about we move into the living room, and we can conduct the interview from the couch?" offers Shard.

As Rainbow moves the camera stuff into the living room, she grumbles about the dragons having never heard of her, despite recognising Fluttershy on sight. The camera is set up on a tripod in front of the couch between two others, with Shard and Sid taking their seats on the sides and Fluttershy sitting in the middle. Ian kneels down behind the couch, placing his claw firmly on Fluttershy's shoulder. "You ready?"

Fluttershy shakes her head, but Rainbow speaks. "She's ready. Go."

Shard clears his throat and looks into the camera. "Hey, everyone. Today, we're having a big crossover event that's sure to make you all very excited. We, the dragons three, are joined today by an up-and-coming, yet already wildly popular talent, Fluttershy of Equestria!"

The three dragons turn and clap at Fluttershy.

"Long-time fans of the show will know that we first heard of Fluttershy and what she was doing about a year ago. She started releasing videos filled with all kinds of species, some of which I'd never heard of before."

"Seriously," interjects Sid. "Who's ever heard of an aralez before? If I hadn't seen it for myself, I'd have thought it was made up. But no, it's real. I went out and did my research, and wow, I donated ten thousand bits' worth of gems toward the wildlife preservation fund." He pats her on the back. "What a show that was!"

"In fact, I looked at the statistics," agrees Shard. "There's a marked increase in donations to wildlife preservation programs ever since your show started. How does it feel to know that, just as you have enjoyed these animals, they are being preserved so that more ponies can enjoy them the way that you have?"

Fluttershy was silent for a moment, not sure how to proceed. "...Good?"

"You heard it here, first, folks. Making the population aware of how great these animals are makes her feel good. But not as good as you feel when you're with them, huh?" he nudges her with his elbow. "I must say, you really look like you enjoy every minute you spend out there. Were you always aware that you'd have lots of fun with animals?"

Fluttershy pauses for a bit, then just nods without saying anything.

"Now, rumour has it that you're starting a new season. And given the fact that your cameramare is glowering at us for not knowing who she is, I'd say it's safe to assume that it's true. Tell us, can you give us a hint as to what we can expect to see this time around?"

"...Animals?"

"Fascinating."
