Chapter 11 - Call of the Babysitter

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

"Cadance, what's up?" Shining Armor trotted after his friend. The two of them were currently walking back from the School of Gifted Unicorns to their dorms.

"Oh. I don't know what to do." Mi Amore Cadenza, or Cadance, scuffed the ground with a hoof, wearing a look.

"What do you mean?"

"Auntie said I need to take on more responsibility as a budding mare." She fell silent, scrunching her muzzle in an adorable way.

Shining also fell silent and pondered for a moment. Responsibility. It was a hard thing to wrap around considering they just started High School. "Well..."

"Well what?" Cadance whipped around and faced him.

"Remember when you babysitted Twily that one time?"

"Yeah?"

"What if you do that. Create a babysitting business."

"..."

"What, you don't like it?"

"I LOVE IT!" Cadance giggled and then launched herself at Shining, making the two of them fall. "You're a genius, Shiny."

"Heh, thanks." The two lay there for a moment.

"Auntie?" Cadance had taken a train ride back to her home in Ponyville. There, she made her way to her house. It was late, so she tried to be quiet when she opened the door.

"Yes, Cadance?" Celestia looked up with a warm smile. She was busy in the kitchen.

"Remember when you said I needed to take on more responsibility?"

"I do remember that."

"Well, I had this idea...Shiny had this idea, that I could start a babysitting business." Cadance chuckled, awkwardly.

"That sounds like a great idea!" Celestia went over and hugged her niece. "I think you'll do great."

"Thanks auntie." She smiled, grateful that it all seemed to have worked out.

"You can use our house if you ever need it. I'm also here if you ever need my help, Luna too, I'm sure."

"Auntie Luna's here too?"

"Yeah!" Celestia beamed. "She's been helping me out at the Kindergarten for almost two weeks now."

"That's great!" Cadance smiled, genuinely happy. It's been too long since the last time she saw Luna. "Wait...our house?"

"Yes. If you're going to start a babysitting business, Canterlot is not the way to go. Nobody would want to accept your services." Celestia nodded sagely. "They all believe in prim and proper establishments." She snickered slightly, then continued. "Better do it here. In Ponyville. There are plenty of mothers who would love to have a babysitter like you."

"Oh...okay."

"Tell you what. I'll handle the school so you can pursue this business, and then, you can work on school work whenever you are free."

"Okay!"

***

The next morning, Cadance went to the Townhall and posted an advert for her new business. She was brimming with confidence and excitement. She couldn't wait to see how far she could take this. A new adventure!

As she prepared to trot away, a snooty looking pony glared directly at her, freezing Cadance to the spot. "Ca...can I help you?"

"Yes, you can help me. I would like to know why this...this filth was put up." The pink mare slapped a hoof onto the advert Cadance had just put up. "How would a mare, not EVEN! How would a filly like you take care of little, precious, foals. I would never let my daughter anywhere near you!"

"Ah......" Cadance continued to smile. Her confidence shattered. She opened her mouth to say something, to say anything, then closed it. She opened it again, then closed it again. Instead, she turned around and tried to make her way back home. But before she could take another step, a very pale orange hoof stopped her.

"Don't ya listen to her naggin'." Cadance turned around and through blurry eyes and saw a kind smile. "Mah name's Pear Butter and it would be a fine honor if ya could take care of mah little one."

Cadance furiously rubbed her eyes and blinked to take another look at the mare before her. She was an earth pony and had the warmest smile. She opened her mouth that immediately choked up. She coughed to the side and felt her face burn.

"There there, honey. Ain't nuthin' to be ashamed about." Pear Butter took a step forward and put a comforting hoof on Cadance's withers. "That mare over yonder should be ashamed. Spoiled Rich is 'er name. Ain't nopony 'ere likes her much."

"Thanks." Cadance whispered, still trying to get her emotions in check.

"My pleasure, dear. Now why don't we walk an' talk. Ya tell me all about yer business and ah'll show all the mothers. Sound like a fair trade?"

Cadance laughed with relief and brought herself to her full height, which was not even close to Pear Butter, but it made her feel better. "Deal!"

***

"How did it go, Cadance?" Celestia asked after Cadance had sat down in the living room with a tired sigh.

"It went...good. It went good."

"Doesn't sound like it was good."

"No no, it was good. The start...not so good. But after I met Pear Butter, it went a whole lot better." Cadance smiled.

"That's good." Celestia finished up what she was doing and sat next to her niece. "So how many ponies?"

"Uhh...wait, I've got a list." Cadance unfolded a piece of paper and started reading off of them. "I've got Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, Scootaloo, Spike, Dinky Doo, Ruby Pinch, Liza Doolots, Noi, Pipsqueak, and Twist."

"...that's a lot."

"And the mothers are offering 20 bits per hour per foal."

"...that's a LOT!"

Cadance just giggled.

Author's Note

Original idea given by Comickook and was expanded upon.
Extra characters given by Bronycommander.
Spike FINALLY shows up, asked by a lot of people. lol.

I know this isn't probably what people were thinking, but think of this as a setup for all future foal related episodes. Better set it up now than later and it still follows the episode! (somewhat) Anyhoo, hoped you liked it!

Next up is the clash between Applejack and Rainbow
