Upon discovering something shocking at Carousel Boutique, Twilight is prompted to make an emergency visit to Sweet Apple Acres. Once Applejack helps calm her down, she recognizes that the alicorn is owed an explanation.

But one cannot understand the incident at the boutique without first understanding the whole story—and Twilight has never heard the full story of how Applejack and Rarity got together. So Applejack begins to spin a yarn fraught with tension and excitement, suspense and square dancing, spa dates and self-discovery, all leading to the time that she fell in love with a different sort of country gal.
