It’s never easy being on the other side of an interrogation room. The wrong side that is. Whichever side you personally feel that would be is, I guess, all a matter of your own opinion. But in my case, the wrong side is the person that doesn’t have the gun and the badge. And when you’re facing life imprisonment or, even the death penalty, well, shit, it’s pretty clear which side isn’t the good one. They never tell you just how fucking cold it is in these rooms. The shackles, and handcuffs around your wrist and ankles don’t help with that fact, nor does the janky ass metal chairs. Plus, the orange jumpsuit that’s covering my body is the equivalent to wearing fucking napkins as coverings. I don’t know why they make these rooms so cold; I’m guessing it’s to not get dumbasses like me to comfortable. To keep you nervous and scared. Well, I’ll tell you right now that you don’t need to make a room as cold as fucking Antarctica to achieve that. I was already shitting my pants at the current predicament I was in.
But what’s really making my insides turn right now is for the reasons why I’m here. Who am I bullshitting, I know why I’m here. I’m guiltier than a motherfucker, and the jackoff in the detective uniform sitting right in front of me knows it too. So do the boys in blue behind him, and the one behind me. A bit overkill on the security if you ask me, it’s not like I can actually do anything, nor want to. But, given what I’m in for, it makes sense why there’s so many cops around me right now. Hell, there’s fucking two more outside the door with shotguns. In actuality however, they’re probably here to make sure nothing happens to me. Some stupid motherfucker actually tried to pop one in my face the second I exited the courthouse earlier today, and by some fucking miracle, or curse if we’re talking about me, his gun jammed. Poor bastard got dog piled by probably more then seven cops. Almost felt sorry for the dude…almost. I swear to God though, the ride back to Canterlot county made me feel like the president with how many police cruisers were escorting us. Needless to say, the cops really want me alive, and a whole lot of pretty fucked up individuals want me seven feet fucking under right now. Either way my life is forfeit, so like I said, I don’t need to be in a freezing cold room to be nervous right now.
“Can you turn up the temperature”, I muttered, lowering my head onto the cold metal table. The detective just smiled, finding my misery somewhat amusing no doubt. He fished into the pocket of his leather jacket before retreating a carton of cigarettes.
“I got to be honest Shimmer, out of all the requests I’ve had from scumbags like you, asking for me to raise the temperature is a first”, he said while placing one of the cigarettes in his mouth. With his other hand, he fished into the other pocket before pulling out a silver flip lighter, and then proceeded to light up the cigarette in his mouth. His eyes met mine, and with a smile, slid both the lighter and the cigarettes to me. I didn’t even hesitate to pick them up, the chains around my wrist clanking against each other with each movement. As I lit my own cigarette, I let the smoke into my lungs, holding it for a good couple of seconds before releasing the smoke out of my nostrils. The detective then took the box and the lighter and moved them next to an ash tray in the middle of the table in between us. That’s how you knew this was going to be a long night. Him taking off his fedora and jacket only confirmed that. But I already knew that coming in.
“You want some coffee Sunset”? He asked. With an exhausted face, I simply nodded my head. Sleep was a luxury that hadn’t met me in the past two days. He looked over to one of the cops behind him and nodded, and the cop nodded back before exiting the room. The detective began to look into a folder, and after a couple of minutes, he sighed and threw it on the floor next to his briefcase. “Look Sunset”, he began. “Let’s cut the shit. We both know why we’re here. Right now, Judge Gaval is keen on seeing you in state prison for the rest of your life. Though your prosecutors want to see you being handed the death penalty”. All I could do was lower my head at those words.
“Guess I’m really fucked, huh”? If this was two years back, I’d be crying right now. But all I could do was stare at the light smoke radiating off the cigarette. I had already accepted this the moment the feds raided my place three weeks ago. “I’d say you’re beyond fucked. At this point choose your own cup of poison. Either the judge hands you over to state penitentiary where, and let’s be honest here, you’ll probably end up getting stabbed to death within your first week. Or we can go ahead and just hand you the death penalty and you can get your short life over with Shimmer”, the detective said.
I chuckled a bit to myself, blowing out two to three smoke rings before exhaling the rest of the smoke out into the room. The way it danced under the single lightbulb that hung over us was almost therapeutic. Two years ago, I would’ve been appalled by the thought of smoking. Oh, what I’d do to go back. “Well shit, guess I don’t have much of a choice”, I responded, laying my head back down onto the table. All the detective did in response was sigh, and I could tell he was disappointed at my response.
“Oh, come on Sunset Shimmer, you’re a smart girl. You know what you have to do”, he said. He reached into his briefcase and dug around for a bit, before returning back up to face me. He placed a small black audio recorder in the middle of the table, and then he took out his pen and note pad from the pocket of his jacket before setting them gently in front of him. I sighed and leaned back into the chair, taking another long drag of my cigarette. I knew what he wanted. I knew the second we got here what this was. It was the big get out of jail card that Anderson, my lawyer, was talking to me about. Because we knew there wasn’t any fucking way I wasn’t going to go to prison or get killed. Bribery, extortion, homicide, racketeering, possession, the whole list. If you can think it, most likely I’m charged with it. So, the only way I’ll have any hope, is to confess. With this confession however, it’s going to put a lot of people behind bars or killed. I’m going to have to change names, move and abandon all aspects of my old life. Which, to be completely honest, doesn’t amount to much. I had no birth certificates or family or any evidence of my existence before this whole nightmare even started, so it wouldn’t be hard moving me. I had wanted to go back to Equestria…but news of what’s happened here had long reached Princess Celestia, and…well… let’s just say I won’t ever be returning home. But what’s really been stabbing my heart, are the friends I’ve made here. All the progress I’ve made at reformation back at Canterlot high, and all the bonds I’ve grown with the girls, had all come apart. I won’t ever see them again after today. All the slumber parties at pinkies, and the mall shopping sprees with Rarity. Helping Fluttershy at the animal shelters, aiding Rainbow with her practice and drinking obscene amounts of apple cider with Applejack on her farm while we watched the sun go down. All that’s dead now, but who am I kidding? It’s been dead for more than a year. But what really hurts right now…Twilight…God, fuck me, I’m such a selfish bitch. To lead her on like that with false hopes of something more, knowing full well what I was doing. I still remember her face there in the courtroom.
“Come on Sunset…you know it’s the right thing to do. This past year I’ve known you; I can tell that deep inside you there’s some small piece of goodness in you. You may be a criminal, and I can promise you that you will be punished in some way for the atrocities that you’ve committed. For the lives you’ve damaged, and for the people you’ve killed. But despite all that…I don’t believe you’re evil. You just got fucked in the ass in the wrong place at the wrong time”. The detective pushed the recorder a little closer to me. “For the victims Sunset…it’s time to come clean”. I stared at the recorder for a bit, I couldn’t even feel the warm tears streaming down my cheeks. Everything that had happened the past two years came rushing back, and I couldn’t handle it. But I knew he was right. I knew I had to do this. Not just for my own ass…but for the people I’ve wronged. With shaking hands, I took another long drag of my cigarette, holding the smoke in my lungs for a good twenty seconds before exhaling. My body started to calm down, and after a short while, I felt I was ready. I looked up at the detective with red eyes, and simply nodded my head. He nodded back with a light smile, and with a voice so soft yet full of so much gratitude, he said “Thank you”. As if the weight he had carried through this long, horrific nightmare had been released. He pressed the red record button. I took one last deep breath, and spoke:
“My name is Sunset Shimmer, and this is my confession. This my personal account of my experience and actions within the Bemont crime family. This is my story”.
