Interlude: Hunting Adria

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

After discovering that Adria had survived being stabbed onto a spike in Azmodan's former lair, where Luna did have to take a moment to wonder if she'd still be alive if her organs had been pierced, she and Leah returned to Bastion's Keep, gathered their allies, and departed without delay. It wasn't that they didn't want to celebrate their victory with the soldiers that had helped stop Azmodan's forces from tearing down the Keep, both of them wanted to relax and spend some time with those who risked their lives to save the world, but there was another threat out there. Interestingly enough the soldiers of the Keep had acknowledged their desire to save the world and let them go to track down another threat, while at the same time Luna found that many didn't seem to worry about why Leah had a new form. Kulle returned to his domain to continue his construction of more constructs that would help them defend Sanctuary, while Tyrael remained with the group to keep an eye on them, mostly to make sure Leah didn't go into a rampage with her new powers.

Tyrael trusted Leah, she was a good human and had a strong will, but they were talking about the power of the Prime Evil, the greatest demonic power in the entirety of creation, so he wanted to make sure she knew what she was doing and was also ready to jump in to stop her if Luna couldn't.

On their first night away from the Keep Kormac and the others found that the two lovebirds went to bed early, while also discovering that, despite the ordeal Leah had been through, there were no screams throughout the night, where Tyrael had to remind himself that Luna was also connected to dreams. As such he realized that even if Leah had nightmares, since she had experienced death thanks to what her mother had done, Luna would be able to tear down those dreams and let Leah have more peaceful ones, so no one disturbed them as the night went on. Tyrael also found that the other Archangels, save Imperius since he had locked himself in his portion of Heaven to heal, were more than willing to allow him to continue what he was doing while also indicating that they were willing to allow him to remain the Aspect of Justice. Kormac had asked why Tyrael wasn't given Wisdom, the other missing seat at the table, and Tyrael said it was due to the fact that Malthael, who was the Archangel of Wisdom, was still alive, somewhere, and that they were sure he'd be back in due time.

Following that Tyrael found that the pair spent the next week training as they traveled away from the Keep, close enough for them to visit any cities or towns to restock on their supplies, but also made sure to stay a good distance away to make sure no one called attention to their presence. The training consisted of Luna setting up a zone where they could practice magic while ensuring that Leah's powers didn't shatter the surrounding area, and it definitely took some time for her to gain some sort of control over her newfound powers. They could feel the shuddering in the air as Leah used her powers, where they had to assume that the more magically inclined might be able to feel or sense her training, and yet, at the same time, Leah was able to reign in her powers, which was all thanks to her patience and hard work, plus Luna's teachings. This meant she gained the power to set restrictions on her magic, decreasing it and making her overall spells smaller in scale, until she was able to replicate what she had done when Tyrael first met her, Luna, Kormac, and Lyndon.

Once she had the control she was after Leah was able to use the spell Luna had been teaching her, the vestige form, where Leah disguised herself as the form she had before her mother's betrayal, though it was more slender than before and he was sure that her chest size was larger as well, a side effect of her new nature, but both she and Luna were fine with it, and she also had a pair of horns growing out of her head that matched those of her dragon form.

Luna, likewise, focused her efforts on controlling her new powers, effectively making it so that her 'Aspect of Winter' form was just that, a transformation for her to take on when she needed her full power, thus allowing the alicorn to return to the level of power she had been using before her own transformation. In addition to that the others found that Luna's weapons maintained their frosty nature, as they seemed to be fully attuned to her newfound power, and when she trained with the others in melee combat they reported that there was a chill coming from the blades. With that in mind Luna also made sure to bind the aura of the weapons to the blades, so while they were practicing no one had to worry about it, but whenever she had to fight they would see her reveal the elemental power of the weapons. Other than that there wasn't too much more for them to do with their training, but it was good to keep their guards up and their skills sharp, otherwise someone might do damage to them when they least expected it, and no one wanted a repeat of Adria's betrayal.

Eventually, however, Leah stopped on a hill and knelt down for a moment, running her hand on the ground for a time, and only stopped what she was doing when she heard Luna approach her, plus the sound of Tyrael since the others were back with the caravan.

"You've finally tracked her, haven't you?" Luna asked, because one of the things they had been practicing was Leah's ability to feel magic, regardless of what type it was since she had Leah practice with angelic energy, demonic energy, normal magic, or Luna's own magical powers, and right now she knew what Leah was doing.

"Yeah, I've found her. Adria's in the marsh outside Westmarch." Leah replied, where she suspected that this was due to the fact that she had her mother's blood inside her, though it could also be due to the fact that her newfound powers were far greater than anyone had originally assumed, both options were potentially the truth, before she got up and glanced at the pair for a moment, "And she's gathering a lot of demonic power... I think she's going to open a portal into Hell."

"That much power generally means a summoning... knowing Adria she's got one last gambit to regain her master and the Black Soulstone." Tyrael said, because while he didn't have his angelic powers anymore, as they were more like what mortals could use despite being slightly stronger, his knowledge from his days fighting on Heaven's side meant he was able to give them information on what was going on, "If she's actually pulling in 'a lot' of demonic power that means she's going to bring in something truly devastating... what that could be, I have no idea, but it can't be anything good."

"Then Leah and I should head ahead and deal with her before she invites doom into this world." Luna remarked, as this told her that Adria had something in mind to do something, what that something was she had no idea, though since demons had a thing for blood, and the witch was linked to blood, she had to assume that the witch wanted to crush Westmarch so she could harvest a bunch of blood for some unknown reason, "You guys should head into the city, keep an eye out for danger... we shouldn't be too far behind."

Tyrael nodded as Luna and Leah spread their wings, Leah let hers come out of her vestige, again thanks to Luna's teachings, before they took off without delay and headed in the direction of the city, heading down into the Blood March, while he did his best to direct the others towards the city. Luna let Leah lead the way down into their destination, where they found that many of the inhabitants, a bunch of poison and disease focused individuals from what she could see from the air, were all dead, blood was splattered everywhere from the looks of it. In addition to that they found dead demons everywhere as well, meaning Adria must have used most of the power Diablo had given her, long before she went on her quest to mark the souls of the Lords of Hell, to exterminate the swamp's inhabitants, mixing demonic blood with the blood of the creatures that had called this place home. In addition to that they discovered that a magical circle had been woven into existence, a massive one based on what they were seeing right now, and it wasn't long before they found Adria standing in the center of it, and the sweat on her face seemed to be from exerting herself too much and the damage from Luna's attacks.

With that discovery made the pair flew down into the marsh, landing near where Adria was standing, who stopped as soon as she noticed that they were there, and the concerned look on her face told them that she really wasn't expecting them to be here, or if she was expecting them they were here too soon for her liking.

"Hello, Adria. Miss me?" Leah inquired, because at this point she wasn't going to address her mother by her title, rather she was just going to use her name and nothing else, even though she did know Luna had some words she would like to throw at Adria at some point.

"Leah, my daughter... you have messed with the natural order of things. Only Diablo is worthy of wielding the power of the Prime Evil." Adria said, where she raised her new staff, one that looked like she had stolen it from another magic user, likely a cultist of some kind if Luna was right about the craftsmanship, and the magic in the ground responded as a vile sickly gate started to crack open in the area behind her, not Duriel's gate but a portal, "Allow me to introduce you to one of the greatest war beasts of Hell: Ashava the Pestilent, a gigantic creature of pestilence, capable of rending the life from the angelic host and poisoning the very ground around her. Even you, Luna, would be unable to stop her!"

Sure enough the demon in question was gigantic, something they were able to confirm as she tore through the portal that Adria had opened, as Luna noted that the creature was roughly as tall as Twilight's castle, at least three-fourths of it anyway, she also had two massive forearm blades and was covered in both fur and tough scales. This was definitely a war beast, one that could spell disaster for more than just a city, rather the sheer power that was coming from the demon meant that it had to be one of Duriel's, either one he had been working on or she was one of his children, because Luna realized that Ashava could wipe out an entire province if left alone. Luna also realized why Adria had come this way, as it seemed like she might have chosen Duriel's Gate, the door to his realm of Hell, and while she didn't know where his Key was located the witch had been hoping that she could do something, such as summoning a gigantic pestilent war beast. At the same time she knew this wouldn't do anything for Adria, because while the beast was powerful she knew that both she and Leah could topple it in no time, though Luna stepped back as Leah focused on Ashava.

Leah said nothing as she shifted into her true form, letting Adria see her humanoid dragon from, before she burst into the air, gathered some of her power into a single point, and released a volley of energy blasts that rained down on Ashava, red shards of power that tore through the war beast and blew it up, causing the demon to screech in pain as it collapsed.

"What the... NO! What have you done?!" Adria remarked, though as she realized that Leah did, in fact, possess the power of the Prime Evil, trained and focused to a point that allowed her to use whatever level of power she wanted to use, which told her that she was in danger as Ashava's corpse crashed into the water of the marsh, before an icy blade erupted from her chest, the thin one Luna carried.

"You got away from me once, Adria... I won't make that mistake again." Luna said, letting the icy nature of the angelic blade seep into Adria's body, where she could see that the skin around the blade was starting to freeze, the ice was spreading through her veins while slowing down her movements, and she could feel the chill in the air as Adria's breath turned foggy as well.

She held the blade in place for a few moments, watching as Adria was frozen from the inside out, then yanked out the angel sword before smashing the witch's icy form with Ashbringer, scattering Adria into chunks of ice that she eradicated with her own magic, and once that was done she and Leah regrouped.

"So... the deed is done. You know, I thought I'd feel something after witnessing my... well, after witnessing Adria being slain like that, but her betrayal had made me feel nothing for her." Leah said, reverting to her vestige form without delay, though she knew she still had emotions, she had experienced them in the hours following her being revived by Luna, she just didn't care about her mother's death in the slightest.

"Don't worry about her, Leah. She's no longer a threat to anyone." Luna replied, draping an arm over Leah's neck as she pulled her close, allowing them to leave the marsh and head towards the large city known as Westmarch, even though she had a feeling someone else was watching them right now, "Come on, let's go tell Tyrael what we discovered and check in with the others."

Leah nodded, as it would be nice to actually relax for a short time before worrying about whatever else the future held in store for her and the others, and yet she found herself actually looking forward to what might happen next, causing her to smile as she looked forward to what the coming hours held in store for them and their friends.
