Fire in your core
Above and beyond
Load Full StoryThe walls were closing in again. Solo lay awake in the suffocating darkness, listening to the familiar sounds of his parents arguing drunkenly downstairs. His bruised body ached with each raised voice and crashing sound, the memories of earlier blows still fresh.
Thunder rumbled in the distance as a summer storm rolled in, complementing the chaos within these walls. Solo longed to feel the cool rain on his skin and breathe fresh air instead of these stale fumes. But he knew better than to hope for escape or comfort tonight. There was little solace to find in this house of torment.
Solo glanced at the sleeping form of his little sister Sandra, hoping she at least got to keep her innocence a while longer. His eyes wandered to the flickering nightlight—his only source of warmth and light in the darkness. It cast a dim glow over his worn copy of _The Hearth's Warming Eve_ storybook and well-loved stuffed pony.
With trembling fingers, Solo plucked the stuffed toy from the bed and clutched it close. "Maybe if I close my eyes, I can pretend to be somewhere else," he whispered to the toy. Somewhere safe, where smiling faces and colorful landscapes waited instead of this abyss of fear and pain.
He turned on the TV and searched for that place now, clicking through static-filled channels until settling on the familiar sights and sounds of Ponyville. As Rainbow Dash and her friends laughed together in the sunny skies of Equestria, Solo felt the tightness in his chest begin to loosen. He was transported from this prison to a world overflowing with magic, adventure and carefree joy.
For a fleeting moment, it was almost like escaping. But as the crashing sounds downstairs grew louder, Solo knew true escape was but an impossible dream. He was trapped here, at the mercy of monsters who should love and protect him instead of—
A sharp jolt shook Solo from his thoughts. Sparks of blue light danced across his fingertips, crackling with an energy both strange and exhilarating. Glancing around in a panic, he scrambled to smother the flickering bursts in his bedsheets, fearing what might happen if _they_ saw. But the sparks only grew in intensity, coalescing into an orb of swirling azure flames hovering above his open palm.
Solo stared transfixed as words echoed in his mind: _"Do not be afraid, little one. I am here to help."_ A flash of light exploded from the orb, momentarily blinding him. When Solo's vision cleared, a figure stood before his bed.
Its misty form solidified into the shape of a pony—but unlike any he had seen in Equestria. Where a mane would be, wisps of translucent blue flames flickered and danced. Wisps of smoke curled from its hooves, leaving smoldering hoofprints in the carpet. But its eyes, kind and endless as the night sky, radiated a warmth and comfort Solo hadn't felt in years.
"Wh-Who are you?" Solo stammered, pulling his stuffed toy protectively against his chest.
The fiery Pegasus bowed its head gracefully. _"I am Flameless. I was born from your dreams of happier times in that magical place, manifested to protect you from the horrors of this one."_
A gasp escaped Solo's lips. "You...you can use magic?"
Flameless nodded. _"As can you, little one. Your gift only now awakens, but together we will learn to wield it well."_ Its wise eyes looked him over with concern. _"This torment you've endured has gone on long enough. Let me put an end to their cruelty, so that you may know peace."_
Solo's heart pounded. Part of him cried out for rescue, longing to be freed of the nightmare his life had become. But the prospect of his parents' wrath if they discovered this mysterious pony terrified him even more.
"Please, no!" he begged, shaking his head frantically. "If they see you, they'll only hurt me worse!"
Flameless regarded him thoughtfully. _"Very well. Then I shall ensure they never harm another soul again."_ Without further word, it vanished in a wisp of azure smoke.
Moments later, shrieks of terror rose from downstairs, followed by crashing sounds and cries for mercy. Solo scrambled to the bedroom door and peered fearfully through the crack, clutching his stuffed toy as though his life depended on it.
In the shattered remains of the living room below, flickering flames danced across overturned furniture and smashed belongings. Their emerald glow cast sinister shadows across the walls. At the eye of the chaotic storm stood Flameless, its blazing mane swirling violently as flickers of blue magic coursed from its horn.
Solo's drunken father cowered against the wall, his bottle shattered at his feet. "G-Get that thing away from me!" he screamed in a shrill voice unlike Solo had ever heard.
His slurred pleas were cut short as Flameless reared with an equine shriek, engulfing the cowering man in swirling azure flames that left him unharmed yet paralyzed with terror. With a nebulous whinny, Flameless directed its flames to encircle Solo's screaming mother next, manipulating the fiery magic with an otherworldly grace and focus unlike any pony Solo had seen on TV.
Through it all, Flameless' blazing eyes never left Solo's, radiating reassurance and promise. _They will harm you no more, little one. You are safe now._ Its words echoed softly in his mind as clearly as if spoken aloud.
Footsteps pounded up the hall, followed by pounding at the front door. "SCP Foundation, open up!" boomed authoritative voices through the oak barrier. "We're here about reports of paranormal activity!"
Solo's heart skipped a beat. He had seen news reports of the secretive government agency known only by its acronym, that collected and contained anomalous beings across the country. If they discovered Flameless...
The Pegasus turned to Solo with an urgency in its ancient eyes. _"Stay back, little one. These arrivals mean you harm as well. I must ensure your protection." _
Without waiting for a response, Flameless whinnied a battle cry and barrelled down the stairs in a fiery gale. The front door burst open under its force, hurling splinters into the night. Solo listened from the bedroom doorway, barely daring to breathe, as chaotic combat exploded into the stormy darkness below.
Muffled shouts and strange popping sounds echoed up from the street, accompanied by cascades of blue flames and swirling magic that lit the house in an eerie glow. A series of dull thuds shook the floor, followed by agonized groans fading into the night. When at last silence fell, heavy bootsteps approached the bottom of the stairs.
"House is clear!" a gruff voice called out. "Target is down but still unaccounted for. Prepare to storm the upper level—hold your fire, it may have hostages!"
Solo stumbled back from the doorway with a gasp, heart hammering in his throat. His eyes searched frantically for somewhere—anywhere—to hide. But before he could move, blue flames erupted in the center of the room.
Flameless emerged unscathed, its mane swirling angrily. _"We must away from here before more arrive,"_ it said with grave urgency. _"The military comes to finish what these 'agents' began. Take my hoof—I will see you to safety, little one."_
Heavy boots pounded up the creaking stairs as Solo stared wordlessly at the proffered hoof. After a lifetime of pain and darkness, could this fiery pony truly offer salvation? Its ancient eyes held only caring, an emotion so foreign yet welcoming. Whatever this place of safety might be, it had to be better than remaining here.
Solo slipped his small hand into the Pegasus' wispy blue grasp. Flames danced soothingly across his skin, filling him with warmth and renewed strength. _"Then let us be on our way,"_ Flameless said gently. _"Your destiny awaits, and our adventure has only just begun."_
In a flash of azure light, the strange duo vanished just as armed soldiers burst through the bedroom door with weapons drawn. But the escapees were already long gone, fleeing into the night on unseen wings of blue flame.

The night air whipped past Solo and Flameless as they soared high above the city, clinging securely to the Pegasus' wispy form. Below, explosions lit the darkness where military forces stormed his family home, searching vainly for their quarry.
"Where are we going?" Solo called over the rushing wind, squinting against the sting of rain. His bruises had faded slightly thanks to Flameless' magical aura, but panic still gripped his heart. What new danger lurked beyond this night?
_Somewhere they cannot follow,_ Flameless replied, flames dancing soothingly across Solo's skin. _A place of wonder that will nurture your gift and keep you from further harm. Hold tight, little one - the gateway is near._
A flash of intuition filled Solo's mind: _The TV...Can we truly cross into Equestria?_
Flameless nodded with a warm nicker. _Your heart has already found refuge within its colorful realm. Now the portal will allow our full escape._
Below, Solo spied the familiar glow of his neighborhood. But as Flameless swept lower, a new sight caused his breath to catch - military vehicles surrounded his home while teams in hazmat suits swarmed the rubble. One glanced skyward, shouting and raising a megaphone. "Cease your escape at once! You are both highly dangerous anomalies that will be contained for study."
Flameless screeched in outrage and summoned a magic barrier as explosive rounds pinged off. "They won't listen to reason. We must disappear before they permanently maim or kill."
Solo shuddered, gripping tighter as the barrier shattered. Ahead, the flickering rectangle of his TV came into view through a bedroom window, its glow beckoning like a lifeline. Heartened by Flameless' steadfast protection, Solo steeled his nerve and cried, "Let's lose them in Equestria forever!"
A brilliant flash blinded onlookers below just before Solo and Flameless merged with the TV screen in a bursts of azure flame. The military halted fire, exchanging baffled looks. "Sir, the targets have...vanished."
But within the show's technicolor realm, Solo gasped at the vivid landscapes rolling past as Flameless' wings beat fiercely. Below, ponies frolicked through fields of flowers or cloud houses, waving up at the newcomers' passing shadows.
Flameless touched down lightly in a grassy glade. "This is your sanctuary now, little one. No darkness can touch you here."
Solo released a shaky sigh, gazing about in wonder at this place that had always brought him comfort now made real. Laughter made him turn to see a group of fillies playing nearby, and a smile broke across his exhausted face. "It's even more beautiful than I imagined."
A knowing glint entered Flameless' eyes. "Your gift allowed you a glimpse of this realm's magic long before we crossed over fully. Now you must learn to wield such power for the greater good, as all residents of Equestria strive to do each day."
Wary uncertainty returned to Solo's features. "But...I don't know how to use magic. What if I hurt somepony by accident?"
Flameless nuzzled him gently, azure flames dancing across his skin in a comforting embrace. "Have faith in yourself, little one. Your heart already knows friendship, laugher and joy - the true roots of anypony's magic. I will guide you to understand your gift, as we face what mysteries await us here together."
A grateful smile touched Solo's lips, worries beginning to fade under Flameless' reassurance. Perhaps in this place, there truly was hope for a happier future. But as the sun descended beyond the distant mountains, an ominous shiver crept up his spine. Shadows moved through the trees at the glade's edge that did not belong to ponies, watching...and waiting.

The rustling leaves woke Solo as dawn's rosy light filtered into the glade. Blinking away dreams of Flameless' lessons, he sat up amid soft grass - then gasped.
Where Flameless had rested now lay only smoldering hoofprints. Rising cries carried on the breeze as others noticed the missing pony. Solo's heart clenched. What if the shadows had...
A crash sounded in the woods. Scrambling up, Solo bolted into the trees and skidded to a halt. Beyond a shallow ravine, a hooded figure waved gnarled hands at Flameless, who whipped azure flame between them defensively.
"Give up the boy, mutie," it hissed. "Humans don't belong here."
A second emerged, flexing obsidian claws. "Our masters will be pleased with such rare prizes."
Flameless whinnied a battle cry and charged, flames swirling like a furious tornado. The figures shrieked unnaturally, slashing out in a blur. A cascade of sparks showered as claw met flame, the fighters moving with inhuman speed and ferocity.
Solo's vision swam with panic. He had to help, but how? Then a familiar warmth filled his mind:
_Find your happy place within, little one. Let its magic flow through you._
Closing his eyes, Solo recalled afternoons watching Equestria from his bedroom, escaping into its colorful world. Joy and comfort swelled in his heart once more - and with them, a wellspring of azure light pulsing from his outstretched hand.
Flameless' words echoed as power surged through Solo: Friendship is magic. Magic is will. Direct it with care, for its effects are very real.
Taking a steadying breath, Solo threw out his magic in a wide burst. The hooded figures shrieked louder as azure enveloped them, leaving scorch marks but no other harm. They retreated into the forest at a loping run.
Flameless' hooves clopped over as magic faded from Solo's palms. "Well done, little one!" it praised, nuzzling him proudly. "Your gift grows swiftly already."
Heart still racing, Solo scanned the receding shadows worriedly. "Who were they? What do they want with us?"
A solemn look entered Flameless' eyes. "Dark creatures that do not truly belong in Equestria. They sensed your arrival and saw an opportunity to cause chaos. But we now know they watch our every move."
Turning, it nodded into the forest gloom. "Come. Let us seek answers from our friends in town before more trouble finds us."
Solo followed Flameless out of the woods, anxiety fading under the comforting morning sun. As hoofbeats carried them onto the road, he gazed back only once at the looming shadows...and thought he glimpsed feral yellow eyes staring after them from the darkened treeline.
Flameless kept a watchful guard as they made their way along the path. Solo took in colorful scenery rushing past, heartened by Equestria's natural magic soothing his lingering fears. Here, even shadows held beauty: leafy canopies cast dappled sunlight, and songbirds echoed through towering trees lining the track ahead.
Rounding a bend, the duo spotted Ponyville in the valley below - and cried out happily at a familiar rainbow-maned figure zipping across the sky above colorful cottages and shops.
"Flameless, it's her!" Solo called joyously. His guide nodded and whinnied loudly to catch the pony's attention. She pulled up alongside, violet eyes gleaming with curiosity and wonder at the strange pair below.

Flameless introduced Solo and Rainbow Dash with a warm nicker. The athlete's eyes widened. A human magic-user and his valiant protector? Your arrival bodes adventure!
She swooped low, curious gaze flickering between the unlikely travelers. Solo's smile faded under her scrutiny. D-Does our being here bother you?
Rainbow snorted. Of course not! It's wicked cool! She pressed a hoof confidently to her chest. Name's Rainbow Dash - fastest flyer in Equestria. Lemme show you around!
Solo's spirits lifted as Dash zipped ahead, urging them after her through Ponyville. Her whoops and laughter echoed encouragement as they wove between chatting ponies and bustling shops. Flameless kept pace with a steadying hoof around Solo, watching the boy relax under Dash's carefree welcome.
At the library, Dash introduced them to Twilight Sparkle engrossed in scrolls. The unicorn gasped eagerly at their tale, quill scribbling across fresh parchment. You two simply must stay for further study! But her smile faded seeing apprehension shadow Solo's face.
Flameless stepped closer protectively. While knowledge is without doubt a boon, our needs now are rest, then help tracking those night stalkers' movements. Such darkness threatens all our realms, so must be faced together.
Twilight nodded solemnly. You're right, of course. She turned thoughtful gaze to the newcomers once more. Get some rest - we'll gather intel and plans with our friends. You two aren't alone in this fight anymore.
Later that evening found Solo relaxing by a pond with Flameless and Rainbow Dash. The filly's antics brought smiles, easing worries as the stars emerged one by one above. Their soft glow illuminated silhouettes slipping through distant trees that set Flameless on edge.
The unicorn's intelligence gathering proved fruitful, it told the others grimly. Those creatures come from beyond the Everfree, crossing some malign portal to wreak chaos. And it seems...they've brought company this time.
A chill wind rose as pounding hoofsteps echoed in the night. Ponies burst from the forest's edge, urging the trio back urgently. The creatures attacked! They're coming, and there's more of them than ever!
Solo's blood ran cold. Flameless stood regally, azure mane aflame. It is as I feared. But you two have heartened the boy - now let us face this evil as one, with hope and friendship guiding our hooves and wings!
Rainbow whooped her agreement, flitting to stand spiritedly by Flameless' side. The ponies cheered and followed, forming a defiant line near the treeline. Trees shuddered ominously as feral roars rose within, emerging at last with a tide of chittering horrors.
Flameless' flames blazed a pure azure as Solo focused, summoning magic to stand ready. Though fear gripped his heart, the friends' bravery beside him bolstered his spirit. As the beasts charged with slavering jaws, a brilliant flash erupted - and standing between armies alone was a regal alicorn, radiant aura calming all.
"Enough," spoke Princess Celestia. The creatures cowered before her light, retreating into shadows once more. She turned a proud eye to Solo. "Your arrival was foretold. Dark times are coming, but together Equestria's magic will prevail through bonds of hope, courage and harmony."
Heart lifted, Solo knew now he had found somewhere to belong. And whatever trials lay ahead, with friends like these nothing could stand against the power of their magic - the magic of friendship.
