Light was filtering through the purple curtains. Not the bright light of the day, but the green and dim glimmer of the aurora borealis. The way too large bedroom was quiet, despite the young lady sitting on the bed, holding her pillow against her torso, looking at the ground. She was lost in her thoughts, lost in her feelings.
Someone knocked on the door. The handle slowly turned, before Cadance appeared, light from the hallway falling right at her daughter's feet.
"Sweetie, are you okay...?"
Flurry let herself fall on the side, with a sigh, turning her back away.
"I'm fine, mom... Sorry I didn't show up for dinner, I just... didn't feel hungry."
The princess of love stepped into the room, slightly closing the door behind her. She sat on the bed, at the same time Flurry repeated, a bit annoyed:
"I said I'm fine mom, really!"
Cadance smiled a bit, looking at her. Four or five years ago, Flurry would have thrown a tantrum against her as soon as she had opened the door. She had grown out of her spoiled little princess phase and was now a great adult alicorn. A daughter Cadance could be proud of.
Yet, Flurry seemed to remain frustrated. She stayed in the castle for days, even a full week, not seeing anyone aside from her parents and the people that worked at the castle. Always saying she was fine, most of the time looking bored or not even mentally there.
"I know love is blind, but I'm not", Cadance joked as an attempt to lighten the ambiance. "You like to solve your problems on your own, I get that. But I can't watch my daughter go on like this for a whole season now, can I?"
Flurry sighed again, muttering:
"I know..."
She hugged her pillow tighter, folding her legs against herself, before adding:
"But you can't help..."
"Oh I'm sure I can, if you tell me. You've been acting like that since Hearth's Warming Eve."
Silence fell. Flurry was thinking and Cadance let her do so. She didn't want to force that out of her. She knew her daughter, despite her changes. After a few moments, Flurry slowly asked:
"I am a princess, right...?"
"You are, sweetie," kindly replied Cadance. "Why?"
"I... don't know what people expect of me... What I should do."
"That's something you'll learn over the years."
Cadance laid her hand on Flurry's shoulder, rubbing it slightly.
"I'd told you to follow your heart, but I think you already know that."
"What if my heart desires aren't aligned with the empire's needs?"
"What do you mean?" said Cadance, tilting her head.
"Nevermind..." Flurry responded, burying her face in her pillow.
"No no, speak up."
"Hmpf..."
She turned her head, avoiding her mother's eyes.
"What if what I want isn't what is expected from a princess? I fear that where I want to go isn't where the empire should go... I know it is my duty to do what's best for our people, and yet..."
She was trying to stay vague, but all this seemed way too specific.
"What choice are you talking about, sweetie?"
Flurry hesitated.
"Is this about a colt?" Cadance asked.
Flurry blushed.
"M-Mom!"
"Don't mom me," she said with a smile, becoming a bit teasy. "I know what a heart in love sounds like."
"D-Don't say it like that!"
Cadance leaned a bit over her, playfully, insisting:
"Come on Ryry, tell me. Do I know him?
"S-Stop with that name! I'm not a filly anymore!"
"Says the girl blushing at the idea of falling in love with a colt."
"T-That's different..."
Cadance kindly laughed, caressing her daughter's head to reassure her. She was still nervously holding on that pillow.
"What's wrong about him?"
"I... shouldn't be in love with him."
"Why shouldn't you?"
She sighed again.
"It's not what a princess should aim for. I should marry some noble colt to consolidate our hold on the rich families, or something."
"Sweetie, we're not in the stories you've read. You can go for anyone you want, as long as they love you back."
Flurry looked at her mother, with uncertainty.
"Really? Anyone?"
"Flurry, I married a captain of the guard. And everyone supported me. Your father and I won't ever blame you, no matter who you love. Colt, mare or even another type of sentient creature."
The young princess looked away, thoughtful. She was still feeling unsure, but her mother's words had reassured her. Cadance followed:
"Invite that person for Hearts & Hooves Day. That'll be your first date."
Flurry's cheeks went red at this idea. As the daughter of the princess of love, every Hearts & Hooves Day in her life had been spent attending a ceremony of some sort, walking the streets and giving her blessing to all the couples she'd met.
But this time, she was going to be the one in a couple. Dating. Sitting at the table of a restaurant, with the one she loved. Looking each other in the eyes. Kissing. And then...
She restrained her mind from going that far. Shaking her head, she let go of her pillow, standing up out of the bed. She was filled with emotions and a desire to act now. She ran for the door, Cadance still watching her.
"Where are you going?"
"Gonna ask him now! Hearts & Hooves Day is the day after tomorrow!"
Cadance smiled. Flurry opened the door, shouting through the hallway:
"Dad! Where are you!?"
Cadance's smile became uncertain, as she frowned, afraid of what it might mean.
"Dad? You're okay?"
Flurry and Shining were sitting at a table, in one of the Crystal Empire's restaurants. But the prince had made every effort possible to not look at her since the start of the day.
From the outside, it was just looking like a regular father and daughter lunch. A break from the duties of Heart & Hooves Day, while Cadance was taking care of minor things in the meantime.
But Shining and Flurry both knew it was more than that. It was a date. Flurry had asked for it and, after much talking with her mother, Shining had been convinced to let her have this one.
"I'm fine."
Even saying "honey" felt wrong in this context, even though he always called her that way.
Cadance had told that Flurry really wanted this. That she held real feelings for him. And neither of them had the courage to simply reject her. That's why Cadance really insisted on him accepting the date and see how things would develop.
Still...
"Dad... You don't like me...?"
"Of course I like you Flurry. It's just..."
"Look at me, dad."
Shining hesitated a bit, before turning his eyes to his daughter. She was wearing a beautiful light cyan dress, hanging from her shoulders with two strings, going down to her thighs. It also showed a bit of cleavage and while Flurry was nowhere near her mother on that side, she had nothing to be ashamed of either. Her clothes were light for the season but, being born in the north, she had developed quite the resistance to the cold. Her long magenta and blue hair were hanging freely, curling up at the middle of her back.
She was looking kind of upset at Shining, as she followed:
"I won't get to enjoy it if you don't, you know...?"
"I know..." he said, looking at her.
She reached for his hand, caressing it, smiling a bit as she tried to reassure him:
"It's just me. I didn't change. I'm still your little Ryry."
"But that's the thing," Shining replied, feeling sorry. "You're my little Ryry. I've seen you grow, but in my head you're still a filly. My filly. It's a lot to suddenly take in."
"That's why I wanted a date. So you would see me differently."
A little silence followed. Shining was conflicted. Yes, she was a grown up now. Almost the age he met her mother at, actually. And, by all accounts, she was a beautiful mare. He didn't need to see the heads turning when they were on their way to the restaurant to know that. But, somewhere, it also felt wrong. How come wasn't she feeling the same?
"How... did you even..." he started, searching for his words.
"Developed feelings for you?" Flurry guessed, playing with her fork. "Well, ask mom, she's the one who understands love best. All I know is that you're the only one I want. You're kind, you're funny, you're sexy."
She smiled, as Shining blushed heavily on the last part.
"Don't you think it's... weird?"
Flurry looked down at her finished plate, pensive.
"I think most people would find it weird, yes. But people don't have to know, so I don't care."
"Nothing's bothering you with the fact I'm your dad?"
She looked up at him, giggling a bit.
"I think it makes it even better. Honestly, the only problem I had was with mom. I didn't want to steal you away from her. But she didn't look that bothered by it."
Shining thought about how Cadance had insisted on him accepting. It's true that he had not expected that from her. But, well, she knew the heart of a young mare better than him. He should probably trust her on that.
Flurry saw her father being uneasy and worried:
"I'm sorry if it's a lot to take in, dad. I'm... I'm just happy that I can finally talk to you about all of this."
"When did it even begin?"
Shining was still trying to comprehend. He had been a normal father, up until now that is, why did his daughter specifically suddenly become attracted to him?
"I don't really know. I loved you like all little girls love their dad, and I don't think I can pinpoint an exact time at which it became more than that."
A waiter came to remove the plates and give them the dessert card, reminding them that they were, actually, still in public.
"We shouldn't talk about that here..." Shining said.
"Yeah, true. I'll take a floating island then. Pistachio flavored ice cream for you?"
"How do you...?"
Flurry grinned, proud of herself.
"I just remembered."
Shining smiled a bit, amused. It's true they went to that restaurant a couple of months back.
After lunch, they decided to start the afternoon with a little stroll through the streets. It was actually Flurry's first time wandering the city on Hearts & Hooves Day. Usually, she'd stay by her parents' side. For Shining too, it had been a while. Since Flurry was twelve, he had participated in the celebration with his wife and daughter. They had to instill the tradition in the future princess.
There were many shops and stalls, all with love-related goods to sell and offer. Some made discounts for couples, others for single ponies. Because this celebration was in honor of love, loved ones, people who found it, thought they had found it, or didn't yet. Heartbreak repulsion charms were as common as two-pieces pendants.
"Hey, dad!"
Flurry pulled on her father's sleeve, pointing at a stand selling candy apples.
"Can we buy one?"
Shining smiled. Well, at least she didn't change on that. After insisting with the seller to take his money – everypony wanted to give the prince or princess something on that day – he handed the candy apple to Flurry.
"Thank you!" she grinned.
She looked at it with interest as they went back to their walk.
"You know, there's a place where they call them Love apples," she said.
"That explains why someone was selling them," Shining replied.
Flurry glanced at her father, then back at the apple. Then, suddenly, she offered it to him.
"Want a bite?"
"No thanks."
"Please?"
Her face went from smiling to a pleading pout. One that shouldn't work for a mare of her age, but her father was weak to it. He gave in, taking a bite from the candy apple.
Wasn't half bad. The caramel was nice and the apple surprisingly fresh. It was rare to have decent ones in the Crystal Empire, due to the weather and travel distance.
Flurry looked at the now missing part with interest. Shining understood a second before she went and took her own bite, right on his.
With a big smile on her face, Flurry savored it, munching happily that indirect kiss. While her father refrained from blushing. She hadn't stopped being a little devious growing up, she just learned to hide it and use it sparingly. She was still a clever and plotting mare.
She held her own cheek with one hand, with a blissful blush on her face. Shining looked around. No one had noticed, it seemed.
"So... What do you want to do next?"
"I don't know, what do you and mom do when you're on a date?"
"It depends... But I think we should do things that aren't available on regular days?"
"Like?" Flurry wondered, still eating her apple.
"I think there are some games."
As his eyes wandered around, they stumbled on a stand that seemed popular, judging by the noise and laughs coming from it. Shining went closer to get a better look.
While the frontage wasn't very wide, the place was deep. A wooden hut with a high ceiling, where the floors had been replaced by mechanical structures. Logs were spinning, circular platforms going up and down, and couples were trying to navigate on them. As pairs, one carrying the other on their shoulders. From the ceiling, prizes were hanging, also going and down, just to mess with the ponies trying to catch them.
Shining turned to Flurry, only to see her eyes locked on one of the furthest prizes. At the back of the hut, they were three hanging from the same rope. Stuffed toys of the royal family.
"I guess it's settled then," Shining said, giggling, going in the queue.
"W-What?" Flurry replied, snapping out of her daydreaming.
"We'll get that one, alright?"
"I-Isn't a bit narcissist to get plushies of ourselves?" she feared.
"I don't think so," Shining argued. "It's like a family photo, in a way. Just one you can hug."
"Fair enough. Thanks, dad."
They waited in the small cue, attracting some curious stares from the inhabitants. Some even came to see them, pay their respects, discuss a bit with the prince and so on. Flurry took advantage of that to inspect the game a bit more, as she had finished her apple. With all the wobbly and rolling platforms, different prizes all had many paths. She quickly figured out which one would be easier for her objective, which was actually the longest and most isolated. Classic fairground trick.
Some couples also set off traps, whether it be by setting foot on the wrong log, or by the pony on top grabbing onto a dodgy beam. Flurry's heart skipped a bit when a couple almost reached the end, only to fall to their demise, blinded by their assurance. While the first prizes were hanging on top of nice and plump cushions, to make sure any fall was without harm, the later part of the shack's floor was actually just a pool of water. A punishment for greed.
"Alright, next o-Oh, your highness!"
The stallholder bowed respectfully.
"It's an honor to see you."
"We would like a turn," Shining asked politely, handing over the money he had prepared.
"Of course, with pleasure. Do I need to explain the rules? You probably guessed how things work."
"It's just a game of balance and teamwork, right?"
The stallion nodded.
"With your size, I suggest the princess will be the one climbing on your shoulder. Of course, no magic and no wings."
"Of course."
"Can he throw me?" Flurry asked. "I've heard dad is pretty good at that."
Shining slowly facepalmed, ashamed. Even his daughter knew about that, huh?
"I'm sorry, but no," said the stallholder. "You must stay on his shoulders at all times. You also only have one chance, and the first prize you grab is the only one you're getting."
"Risk and reward, I see," Flurry said, very much interested. "When do we start?"
As an answer, the stallion opened the way to the inside of the shack.
Father and daughter went inside.
"Alright, time to do this."
Shining crouched, presenting his back to Flurry. She carefully climbed on his shoulder, thighs on each side of his head.
"Been a while since I've been there," she joked.
"Well, I think you're still light enough."
Securing her legs, he stood up, looking at the journey awaiting them. In the back of his head, he added "Would have been harder to do that with your mom..."
"Onward!" Flurry suddenly said, pointing ahead. "To the left!"
"Are you sure...?"
"Trust me!"
Shining smiled, going on the path that started with small round platforms that could spin on themselves. But the unicorn knew better. As captain of the guard, such exercises were easy for him. Even when carrying a weight, he could trust his feet. Flurry did her best to stay still, letting him do the hard work, while a naughty voice in her head whispered that getting her father between her legs had been easier than expected. She giggled.
"What?"
"Nothing. Careful, this one is fake."
"Oh."
Shining avoided the trap with a slight jump, landing on a safe place in-between two challenges. The next one was a series of horizontal beams stuck into a wall. To complicate things further, some were placed around Flurry's level, she would need to move around them.
"Ready?" Shining asked.
"When you are, daddy."
One cautious step at a time, Shining began his progress, trying every beam with his foot, making sure it wouldn't suddenly collapse. Meanwhile, Flurry leaned to the right, avoiding the obstacles, grabbing them to keep some support and not have her whole weight pushed on her father's shoulders.
"Alright, easy enough," Flurry said, before immediately regretting her words as her hand slipped. One of the sticks was covered in some kind of oil that made it impossible to hold onto.
Caught by surprise, she almost completely fell off Shining Armor, only managing to stay on by clenching her thighs around his head. He tried to help by securing a hand on her hips, but was just put off balance even more.
Flurry reached a desperate hand, grabbing the next beam. Her hand didn't slip. She immediately pulled herself, using her second hand to secure her hold. Shining managed to find his footing back, while Flurry let out a deep sigh of relief.
"That was close..."
"Er, Ryry?"
"Yes?"
She looked down, only to see her father's cheeks squished between her legs.
"Oh, sorry."
She released his head, with a bit of regret. Shining caught his inner voice thinking that her legs were soft, before chasing away that idea.
They went to the other side.
"This is funnier than I expected," Shining admitted.
"We're not done!"
"I know, I know," he giggled.
Flurry smiled and took the opportunity to caress his head a bit.
"Your mane is so soft, dad."
His cheek turned slightly red.
"Thanks. Let's move on."
The next challenge was a regular game of balance on a rolling log. They were also entering the part where the pool was beneath them.
As Flurry had seen, this one was actually easier. Just a bit of good balance and coordination, Flurry following her father's tilt, as if she was an extension of his body, and they went to the other side without any trouble.
Last one was the real deal. The final step before the reward. After a bit of planning, Shining threw himself onward, stepping on the swinging piece of wood, then jumped, grabbing onto Flurry's legs going around his shoulders. She caught the beam on top of her, swaying forward, above the precipice. Shining landed on small wooden planks, barely large enough for one foot. They were moving, all in different directions. He jumped from one to another, making his way towards the end. As he progressed, they began to move up and down as well, adding height to the challenge. But it was also the key to grabbing the stuffed toys.
Flurry reached her hands high, towards her coveted daddy plushy. They were on the edge, they couldn't go any further. Up, down, left, right, Shining was doing his best juggling between the planks.
"Come on, grab them!"
"I'm trying! But they're too far!"
Shining had to think fast. He wasn't going to carry on like this for long. He made his decision. At the peak of his height, he suddenly jumped forward, to the plushies. Flurry stretched her arms as much as she could, then, finally:
"Got'em!"
Splash!
Shining Armor was quick to resurface, the pool wasn't really deep, Flurry still on his shoulders, firmly holding her trophies.
"You have them?" he asked, catching his breath.
"I do!"
"Great!" he smiled, going for the edge of the pool.
Flurry jumped off his shoulder once close, looking at her wet reward with pride. Her father looked up, happy, before he blushed heavily. Flurry's cyan dress was completely damp, sticking to her body, semi-transparent. He could see everything, her underwear, her back, the distinct lack of a bra. Thankfully, she was facing away from him.
That's when she turned around, showing him their prize. But all he could see were her breasts. Round and firm, with small nipples.
Flurry noticed his flushed face and looked at herself, before blushing as well, covering herself with her arms and the stuffed toys.
"D-Dad!"
"S-Sorry!"
He turned away immediately, while Flurry looked around for a solution, wrapping her wings around her body. She wasn't planning on exhibiting her body to the common folks. Only her father could feast his eyes on it.
"Here, take this and give me your clothes," said Shining, offering his vest.
"T-Thanks."
She took it. It was also wet, but she put it on her shoulders, letting her dress fall under it, handing it to him. Shining carefully glanced at her, making sure he could turn back, before he grabbed the dress with magic, casting a spell that began to dry it.
"Wait, you know that kind of spell?"
As he got out of the water, casting the same spell on his clothes, he answered:
"When you're a big brother, you learn how to do chores. And when you're the new recruit in the royal guard as well."
"Oh..."
As he handed the dress back, he realized Flurry was staring at him with... passion?
"What's wr-"
She didn't go for the dress with her magic. She went for his shirt, pulling him closer, as she couldn't take it anymore. She got him by surprise, she pushed her lips against his, while extending her wings around them so that no eyes would see them.
She didn't hold the kiss for long. She knew it was too risky, too sudden. But seeing him being so crafty, in addition to all the other qualities she already saw in him, after the adrenaline rush of the race and the one provoked by her unwilling exposure. It was too much. She needed that kiss.
Shining's surprise wasn't even gone when she moved her head back, whispering a little "I love you dad", before she turned back to put her dress on again.
There he sat, frozen, blinking in confusion as to what had just happened. And why his heart was racing so much. Could he have been... enjoying it? He shook his head, chasing away that thought once again.
He looked around. A set of stairs led back to the entrance. Once Flurry had put her dress back on and gave the vest in return, he headed that way.
"Congratulations on winning them," the stallholder said, seeing them coming out. "Hope you find them accurate."
Shining glanced at his daughter. She was holding the plushies against her, the one depicting him snuggled between her breasts. He cleared his throat.
"Yes. Thank you, they'll make for a great memory."
"My pleasure," said the stallion, bowing again.
"Bye!" Flurry wished, waving as she followed her father.
"Have a nice day, princess."
"Thank you!"
She was way too happy for an adult. Smiling brightly. But the crystal ponies didn't mind a gleeful princess.
"So, what's next dad?"
She walked up to him, with curious and dreamy eyes. That day had been the best day for her in a while, and she couldn't wait to do more with him.
Shining, on his end, was trying to act natural and not think about the fact that his daughter had probably given him her first kiss.
"Well... The ceremony is probably about to start, so we could go and see it."
"Oh, why not. Never seen it from the crowd. Wonder what mom has in mind this year."
"Only one way to find out."
The great stadium was the ideal place for it. The ceremony was so popular, even outside of the city, that it was actually hard to find places to sit. Flurry had insisted on going for the higher ones, because she had seen it from up close too many times, she wanted the other experience. The plushies had been teleported away, to the castle.
But even there, seats were few and far between. Even worse for two places next to each other. To the point where it annoyed them both. And neither of them wanted to ask for people to move. They would, most likely, judging by all the greetings they were hearing on their way among the crowd.
"You know what?" said Flurry. "Just, sit there."
She showed an empty chair.
"But-"
"Just sit. We're going to miss the start."
She had a point. Shining Armor sat down and – he should have guessed that one by now – Flurry sat on his lap.
"There. Better."
He would have said otherwise. Not that she was heavy, nor that she was blocking the view, he could see just fine over her shoulder. It was just making him a bit uncomfortable.
He also smelled something. Something he knew.
"Did you put some perfume on?"
Flurry smiled.
"You finally noticed. Yes, I took one that mom likes."
"Oh... That's why."
"You like it?"
He carefully nodded.
"I figured. Mom wouldn't have it otherwise. And the dress?"
"What?"
"Do you like the dress?"
Shining glanced at her, weighing every words:
"It suits you well. But it's a bit light."
Flurry rolled her eyes, asking:
"Do I look pretty?"
She wasn't going to let him get away that easily. She wanted that compliment. Shining hesitated a bit, before answering:
"Yes. You're very beautiful."
"Thank you dad!"
"You're welcome sweetie."
He sighed internally. He shouldn't be that wary of her. He had accepted the date, he didn't want to disappoint, and he wasn't lying. He wanted for her to have a nice time. And he also had a good time too.
Flurry tensed up a bit when she felt his arms going around her waist, holding her with tenderness. She turned her head to look at him, flushed and surprised.
"D-Daddy...?"
"It's just a hug, Ryry. Enjoy the show, okay?"
"A-Alright."
She adjusted her position to be more comfortable. At least, that's what Shining told himself. It was definitely not to rub her ass against him. Not at all.
The ceremony began. Cadance walked in the center of the stadium, accompanied by other ponies, including Sunburst. She started, as always, with a speech. About this celebration, about the concept of love that she was the princess of, about the importance of that feeling, be it platonic or romantic, at the very foundation of Equestria.
Flurry smiled.
"She looks so pretty in that dress. Did Rarity make it for her?"
"I think it was Coco this year," Shining said, looking at his wife, smiling as well.
He couldn't see her very well from so far away, but she was radiating beauty, as usual. She was always at her brightest during this day. Flurry leaned a bit more against him.
"I'm so happy she allowed me to spend the day with you, dad."
"She insisted on me accepting as well, you know."
"I know. She wants me to figure out by myself if those feelings are true or not."
Shining rested his chin on her shoulder, glancing at her.
"... And the answer seems to be...?"
Everypony was listening to Cadance or talking. No one would pay attention to their discussion. Flurry looked at Cadance, lost in her own thoughts. She slowly laid her hand on her father's cheek, caressing it.
"So far, they only got stronger."
Shining looked away. Flurry sensed it.
"And for you...? Are you still just uncomfortable because I'm your daughter?"
"I think I am, yes," he sighed. "I'm sorry, I don't think I can reciprocate your feelings."
Flurry smiled. In the stadium, Cadance began to sing with an orchestra.
"Actually, I think you can. If the only thing bothering you is that I'm your daughter, you just have to overcome it."
"You really won't let go, won't you?"
He wasn't blaming her. It was more like a realization.
"I inherited that from mom. I know she was the one that had to cling onto you, because you wouldn't even notice her feelings."
"Did she tell you that?"
"I won't answer that question."
Flurry giggled. And that got a smile out of Shining as well.
"Did you like our kiss at least?" she asked.
"I was mainly shocked, so I don't know," he honestly said.
She glanced at him.
"Should we try again...?"
"Not in public Ryry, please."
"Okay, okay. Can I ask you something else then?"
"You're going to anyway, so go ahead."
"Did you like what you saw?"
Flurry blushed as she asked that question. Her heart was anticipating the answer. She had seen her father flushed, so he must have seen her as more than his daughter, right?
"I... I don't know."
Well that was expected. But not the answer she wanted. So she insisted:
"You saw my body. My breasts. My underwear. Didn't you feel anything?"
"D-Don't say it like that, it makes me sound like a pervert."
Flurry took in a deep breath. Leaning even more against him, she ran her hands over his, whispering with an unrestrained neediness:
"But I want you to be a pervert with me, dad..."
This time, that slight movement from her hips was definitely on purpose. She was rubbing her butt against his crotch.
"F-Flurry, I-"
He wasn't able to finish his sentence. She laid a finger on his lips, hushing him.
"Either you don't answer, and I'll take that as a no. Our date will keep on as if nothing happened and that's fine. Or, you grab my hands and I teleport us back to the castle so we can discuss it in private."
She was truly taking the lead now. A part of her had snapped. She was so close to getting what she wanted. She just had to push it out of him. Yet, he hesitated. Glancing at Cadance.
"She agreed, you know?" Flurry pointed out.
"You asked her?"
"... I really want you, you do realize that, right? Of course I asked her."
She couldn't help herself but find it a bit cute how dense he could be sometimes. She understood why her mom fell in love with him, even with what one could qualify as a flaw.
