Author's Note
I noticed some story flaws that needed improving, so I'm restarting. Hopefully it turns out better this time.
Prelude
White. That was all Twilight could make out in the corners of her vision. The scent of grass and other vegetation permeated her nostrils. Her heart pounded, reverberating through sensitive ears as her gaze veered between two unknowns. The animals before her were reminiscent of wolves, yet unlike timber, which she was accustomed to, their structure composed itself of flesh and bone, protruding jagged, mangy tufts of fur. A young girl draped in cloth sat frozen idly by, paralyzed in terror under a tall, lanky tree. The Alicorn couldn't blame her. Locking onto the beasts of prey, they bared their fangs, lips dripping with a hunger too long unsatiated. Twilight truly believed it was the end for them both, and then...Something changed. Folding back their ears, whimpering in contrition, three emaciated canines approached, nuzzling the girl's chin in an act of affectionate prayer. It was then that Twilight understood. The poor things were driven not by malice, but desperation. They were suffering - suffering from starvation. They only desired what was necessary to keep themselves breathing, yet such a dramatic shift gave the Alicorn pause. Why had they halted? Why did they stop when the opportunity to acquire sustenance presented itself? Was the child next to her somehow responsible?
"Did she...Is this her doing...!?"
The corners of light grew brighter. Twilight's vision obscured, blocking the nameless world from view. It was already clear the dimension in question was not her own. It was somewhere else far, far away. She found herself wondering if she would ever see this mysterious realm again, though odds were unlikely. Her mind raced with questions she assumed would go unanswered, and the mare believed it would always be that way, but life has a strange way of surprising people when they least expect it. Such a gift would come to her in the form of one she knew quite well.
Amongst the stars of the astral plane, Luna glided between galaxies. Some teemed with life while others were devoid, though one thing remained true. Dreams transcended the boundaries of time and space. In the realm of reality's subconscious, all things were possible. This was how natural law dictated the mind function. Nightmares, no matter how vivid or corporeal, never bled into the waking world. Upon arriving in the Milky Way, this notion was put to its ultimate test.
"What in our sister's name...!?"
Nine planets aligned around a cosmic ball of fire. Like Equus, Earth had a sun of its own, yet the dark shroud cast blocked over said star's life-sustaining rays. The princess could no longer deny malevolent forces were amiss. An attempt was at play to smother the planet from within.
"How can this be!? This evil I'm sensing...How could it have reached so far, and so quickly as well!?"
Shadows crawled across oceans like black fire, erupting in geysers of volcanic ash and soot. Boundless energy consumed everything, threatening to expand beyond its native borders. Countless cries of agony echoed in a deafening cacophony of anguish. Humanity was haunted, but by what, they knew not. Even the reaper would not be able to set them free.
"This is too terrible! I must warn 'Tia right away!"

Author's Note
Decided to set this around the time of the last problem. I wanted all the characters from the series to be present and accounted for. Seemed like the best time for that to be the case. Twilight's wise and powerful by canon's end. Multiply that a million times over and you'll have an idea of how she'll turn out here.
Monition
Twilight trudged through the castle halls, heading towards the kitchen where Spike had already prepared breakfast. Violet circles lined the bottoms of her eyes, her mane messy and unkempt. In her state of disrupted sleep, she had little motivation to tame the strands down. The dragon had seen her in rough shape before, but this took the cake. She was exhausted beyond anything words could describe.
"Woah! What happened to you!?"
"Long night." the Alicorn said groggily. She wasn't quite sure how to explain the inner machinations of her subconscious. That girl...That world...They felt so real...So familiar...How were they connected, and what was their relation to Equus? None of what she saw made sense. Peering into the corners of her memory, there was only one logical conclusion. The child was human. No other explanation existed.
"Wanna talk about it?"
"Just weird dreams I guess. I saw something that looked like a creature from the forbidden archives, but it was different from what I remember - more futuristic. She looked like a girl around the same age as you: maybe a little younger."
"What kind of stuff did you read in there, anyway? I know Celestia swore you to secrecy, but I wouldn't have told anyone."
"I didn't know what to make of it. It was a lot more unnerving than I anticipated."
"That bad, huh?"
"You remember that day, don't you? It was shortly before the princess sent us here to live in Ponyville. I was the only one she trusted to use the archives' knowledge wisely. After I returned, she insisted I never speak of their contents to anyone. She wanted us to make friends and live our lives as peacefully as possible. Given everything that's happened, I understand why. I saw this strange look in her eyes - one that's never appeared before or since. It almost looked like..."
"Like what?"
"Pity..."
Twilight stared down at her plate. Memories of Canterlot flooded her mind. Everything Celestia did was for the good of her people. Twilight loved and respected her immensely, but she couldn't shake the feeling their way of life was disingenuous. Something about it seemed inauthentic and forced, but the former librarian couldn't explain why. She only knew half their history had been built on a lie.
"So...What exactly was it you saw? I can't just let it go after you brought it up like that, especially seeing the condition you're in. It takes a lot to rattle you this badly."
Twilight sighed in defeat. Her sibling had a point. She'd already gone back on her word. There was no use hiding it now.
"A long time ago, Star Swirl's predecessors discovered a portal to other worlds - a mirror between dimensions connected by a pathway referred to as the astral plane. They traversed numerous galaxies across time and space, documenting their findings for scientific research. Eventually, they stumbled across a planet called Earth in the Milky Way, Like Equus, it was inhabited by a variety of complex organisms. However, they discovered earthlings were plagued by a genetic mutation - one which impaired their cognitive capabilities. Supposedly, they committed acts so unspeakable it's unknown today what they were. The most dangerous among them are homo sapiens, or human beings. Last I knew, they were a race of of bipedal hominoids who evolved from large primates."
"Giant monkeys!? You gotta be pullin' my leg!"
"They don't look like what you're probably imagining. I'd show you a portrait, but obviously I don't have the scrolls on me."
"So the girl you were dreaming about was a human? What did she look like?"
"She had bright blonde hair tied in a ponytail. She had her eyes covered underneath her bangs. It was almost impossible to tell what she was thinking. She also wore clothes made out of fabrics I've never seen before."
"I guess it has been a long time. They've probably changed a lot since then. So have we. It makes sense they'd look different nowadays."
"Why am I dreaming about them, though? I thought it might be because I was afraid of them, but I wasn't of her. In fact...She seemed kind...Just like Fluttershy..."
"Coincidence maybe? You think they're still around?"
"I don't know. Like you said, it's been ages. A lot probably happened between then and now."
"I wouldn't worry too much. Based on what you've said, none of them ever found the portal. So long as we never cross paths, we should be in the clear."
"Still, if the princess is showing signs of alarm, there may still yet be cause for concern."
"I'd wait to hear from her before jumping to any conclusions. For all we know, everything's fine and you're just flipping out over nothing. Wouldn't be the first time."
Twilight smiled weakly. Her brother's calm demeanor put her mind at ease. The beach ball incident was enough to call her sanity into question. The last thing she needed was to further cement her reputation as an escaped mental patient. Once was more than enough.
Somewhere, on the other side of the mirror, a teen girl hung up her phone call. It wasn't the usual conversation she'd come to expect. The youngest of her allies, Emily, had narrowly avoided death. Emily's mother Chelsea dialed the adolescent in a panic, confused as to how her daughter was still alive. Maria had no answer. She could only ponder behind the veil of her raven black shroud, eyes betraying emotion rooted firmly in her essence. Downstairs, the Drake found her pet relaxing by the kitchen. The kitten's fur reflected that of a black hole, his own orbs barely visible. Maria lifted him into her arms, stroking his figure softly. The love she felt ran deeper than fear or pain; perhaps even her own.
"Hey, buddy. You got enough food an water?"
The feline mewed in response. His dishes were full, but Maria's gentle nature compelled her to ask out of care. He seemed healthy enough, but the Drake had to be sure.
"I have to go out for a while. I'll be back soon, okay? I love you..."
Maria returned Ian to his original position. While the two were unable to communicate verbally, he understood her all the same. She left the room, gathering her school supplies. Adjusting her headphones, she began the trek south towards Americus-Sumter High. Melodic riffs, pounding drums, and throaty gutturals pulsated through her auditory canals. She could only hope the beasts up north wouldn't devour her friends in the Drake's absence. Still, the fact Emily survived meant they saw something in her - something they couldn't bring themselves to kill. Maybe this time, hope would hold through. No one would know for sure until the moment of truth arrived, and it was fast approaching. Soon, Equus and Earth would locked hoof-in-hand, marching in tandem to beat back the darkness. Celestia prayed in solitude, pleading their alliance would hold once the latter's crimes came to light. Chrysalis had proven forgiveness extended so far, and humanity's quest for atonement was sure to stretch significantly further. Twilight's friends would all come face-to-face with an uncomfortable truth. Evil was out there, and it would never stop - never relent. Not until it was put to rest. God only knew how long that would last...

Gonna try to go all in this time. I've hit rock bottom. Now there's nowhere to go but up.
Star Seekers
After breakfast, Spike insisted Twilight return to bed. The Alicorn agreed, acknowledging in a rare display of vulnerability that she was incapable of concealing her exhaustion. It wounded her pride to admit weakness, but a damaged ego wasn't worth running herself ragged over. She turned, facing the direction where her chamber resided. However, before she could move so much as her foreleg, a loud belch echoed across the kitchen. Following several sparks of green flame, a letter materialized before the duo. It was signed personally by the princess herself.
"A letter," Twilight inquired, "What's it say?"
Spike examined the scroll, his expression transforming into one of sheer terror.
"Uh-oh..."
"What? What is it?"
"Looks like I may have spoken too soon. You might wanna take a look at this."
Twilight skirted around her assistant, levitating the parchment into view. Each sentence clotted her blood colder. By note's end, her veins were all but ensnared by ice.
"Twilight, if you are reading this, I fear the worst has come to pass. Something ancient and deadly now stirs below Earth's surface. We cannot say for certain what this dark presence is, but without question, we know it as evil's true form. It will take time to consume the planet fully, but should it succeed, I shudder to think what will become of Equus. The disruptors of harmony you have faced before were but misguided children - lost souls wandering in search of greatness to quell the emptiness inside. What Luna and I sense now lacks such conscience or reasoning. It is murder made real. Our only option now is decisive action. We have laid out plans for a possible contingency, though the risk involved would be undoubtedly immense. Divulging such details at this juncture would cost us time we already do not have. Please, gather your friends in Canterlot Castle. Our future and world are depending on you."
"How do they know all this!? Have they been monitoring Earth this whole time!?"
"Dunno, but it looks like we're in a whole heap of trouble. Probably a good idea to do what she says."
"I guess so. Grab onto me."
Spike obliged, wrapping an arm around the Alicorn's neck. Conjuring a bubble of mystical energy, the duo disappeared, leaving no trace behind. Twilight felt it in her bones. This was the group's final test of friendship. If push came to shove, they would lay down their lives to protect one another. That was their species' way.
As expected, Twilight and Spike were met with varying degrees of hesitation. Fluttershy's anxiety overwhelmed the Pegasus with fear, having never faced a foe of such pronounced scale. Twilight placed a hoof on her shaken friend's shoulder, staring into the other mare's eyes with what little optimism she could muster.
"I know things seem scary right now. I'm scared too, but princess Celestia has always maintained faith in us, even during the most trying of times. There's no reason this should be different. If she says we can stop this, whatever it is, then I believe her, because I have faith in her, too. I know you feel the same way."
"I do. It's just..."
"I know. It's a cruel thing, being taken from this world early, especially when we leave loved ones behind, but if we stick together, our odds of survival are at least better than zero. We've been given a chance to prevent sorrow unlike anything Equestria's known, but it won't matter unless we seize the opportunity. I need you to dig down into the basement of your well. You may be surprised how deep such courage runs."
"O...Okay...I'll try..."
Fluttershy inhaled, stealing a breath to calm her nerves. At least for the moment, they had time to prepare. Pulling the Pegasus in for a hug, Twilight teleported her friends towards their final destination.
Outside the doors of Canterlot Castle, Twilight noticed something was off. Nary a soul resided before its walls, and birds did not chirp in the absence of life. Pinkie stopped bouncing, discomfort growing as her smile inverted.
"Where are the guards?" Twilight questioned. It wasn't like them to abandon their posts - not at a time like this. She'd assumed her mentor would've informed them of the impending danger.
"Maybe they're changing shifts?" Fluttershy offered. It was the only explanation she could rationalize without succumbing to fear.
"There would at least be someone standing by! They took an oath to protect the princesses at all cost! They wouldn't just leave us defenseless!"
"Should we go inside? Celestia might know something. You did say it was a secret."
"Not even the guards know. She must've wanted to avoid panic. If the general public found out about Earth, our objective would undoubtedly be compromised."
Twilight's friends gawked at her in confusion.
"Erm...," Rarity began, "Earth? Compromised? Pardon me for assuming so boldly, but it sounds like you're suggesting reconnaissance!"
Twilight sighed. In a whirlwind of neuroticism, she had blown her own cover.
"There's a secret archive in the castle only four of us know about. Celestia and Luna make up two. Spike and I are the others."
"And you suspect our situation relates to this archive somehow? What exactly was contained in its texts?"
"Somewhere, there's a mirror that leads to other worlds. It was discovered by Star Swirl's ancestors many millennia ago. They sealed it away to cut off access from invading forces. Nothing ever came of it, and we were hoping nothing ever would. Unfortunately, it looks like something's escaped. There's a large veil of shadows covering Earth as we speak."
"You mean to tell us Earth was plotting an invasion, and now they've developed a new weapon!?"
"Not exactly. Up to now, our greatest adversaries were evolved primates called humans. Rather than magic or flight, they relied on technology, but something happened in their brains to turn them rabid, and they've been destroying each other ever since. Anyone in their path was also at risk. That's the initial reason the portal was sealed. The shadows appear to be even more deadly."
"You're JOKING! This is absolutely PREPOSTEROUS! How could you not have told us this sooner!?"
"I wanted to, but Celestia pleaded with me to stay quiet! She was even more terrified than you!"
"And now you expect to waltz into enemy territory thinking everything will be hunky-dory!? Have you lost it completely!?"
"I thought Celestia might've accounted for that already! She did say her and Luna had a plan!"
"And what plan would that be!? Sit on our tails and wait for the earthlings to eat us all alive!? I don't want to be eaten, Twilight! Do you understand!? I DO NOT WANT TO BE EATEN!!!"
"Rarity," Rainbow intervened, startling the rest of the party, "chill out already! She was just doing what the princess told her! Any of us would've done the same thing! Lay off her, all right!?"
"Listen to yourself! Can you honestly say with absolute certainty you wouldn't have uttered a single word!? This will affect our entire planet!"
"Has it crossed your mind maybe the guards couldn't handle 'em? I don't know if you've realized it or not, but Twilight's magic is way stronger than her brother's! She's already more powerful than our entire military combined!"
"Yes, but why would the princesses send us in alone!? At least with more numbers, we stand a better chance! Twilight said herself our odds would increase significantly with more manpower! Would it not make more sense for at least someone to come back alive!? Between us, I simply don't see how it can be done!"
"A clandestine operation," Twilight spoke, "Our mission will likely be to investigate in secret. Celestia and Luna want us to find the shadows' weakness."
"And how pray tell do you propose we do that!?"
"Celestia knows something we don't. She wouldn't have called us here otherwise. I'm in the dark on this one too."
"Did you even stop to consider what would happen to the girls without us!? Sweetie would be devastated! How do you intend to explain this to her if something happens to me!?"
Twilight's brow furrowed in an expression of focused indignation.
"It won't."
"And what makes you so sure!?"
"Because I won't let it."
"While your confidence is admirable, perhaps it would be wise to-"
"I'm your friend, Rarity. You all mean more to me than you will ever know. I would blow this world to pieces before anything could touch you. If you can believe in nothing else, trust in that. From here on out, everything I do, I do for you, and for all the people of Equus."
Rarity's mouth snapped shut, anger all but forgotten. Twilight wasn't acting as a princess anymore. She was someone else entirely.
"How long have you had to think this through...?"
"Long enough. I won't let anyone hurt you. The same way I have faith in Celestia, I need you to have faith in me. I only hope you understand why I would ask such a thing."
"Twilight..."
"Don't worry. Just follow me like always, and we'll get through this...Somehow..."
Twilight carried on, Spike strolling beside her. Rarity turned to face Rainbow once more.
"Now do you get it? Twilight's the adhesive binding us all together. We're safe in her hooves."
Rarity hung her head. A fresh pang of guilt echoed across the unicorn's breath, embarrassed and remorseful of her uncouth display.
"I suppose you're right. Why must I lack the courage to see...?"
"It's okay. We're all a little freaked out right now. If we put our heads together, we're bound figure somethin' out. We've done it before. Just gotta think harder this time is all."
"Thank you, Rainbow. I feel better now. Twilight's always come through when we needed her, so I suppose it's only natural we reciprocate. We must proceed with our obligations in mind. It's the only way we'll emerge unscathed."
"All right! Now you're speakin' my language! Come on! First one in's a rotten apple pie!"
"Excuse me?" Applejack chided.
Twilight's friends rushed towards the throne room. Both Celestia and Luna waited patiently for their arrival. Taking into account the latter's aforementioned involvement, their circumstances were unquestionably dire.
"My goodness, Twilight," the sun princess exclaimed, "You look exhausted! Are you all right!?"
"I'm okay, princess," Twilight replied cordially, "We came as soon as we could."
"I assume you've told your friends?"
"Everything I know. Our mission entails learning the shadows' weakness so we may use it to our advantage."
"While correct, as I mentioned, there's more to this than meets the eye. Based on our observations, the best course of action appears to be a joint effort, for you see, humans have undergone a radical transformation of their own. Their cognitive abilities are beginning to show themselves in full."
"You mean...!?"
"Forgive me, Twilight. There are secrets I have hidden even from you. As you know, under Star Swirl's guidance, we were taught the lessons necessary to become proper royalty, and upon reaching maturity, another of our tasks was to guard the astral plane. His ancestors presumed such a scenario would occur in the distant future, though it spiraled into something far more ominous than they ever could have imagined. We didn't know how things would play out until today, but now that we've acquired our answer, the fate of all worlds must fall on your shoulders."
"How are we supposed to cooperate with humans!? I thought they were dangerous and prone to betrayal!? How can we hope to trust them after everything we've learned!?"
"Things are not what they appear. The archives were flawed in a way no one could have predicted. They are antiquated by the standards of the modern era."
"Antiquated? How so?"
"Humanity's destructive tendencies were not the result of a genetic defect. It was merely part of what made them who they were."
"That's even worse! How is that supposed to help us!? Now we have even less reason to trust them!"
"I'm surprised you can't see the bigger picture. It's what those tendencies created that will ultimately aid you on your journey."
"What they created...?"
"Millennia of failure spawned resistance among their ranks. The youth today understand their world to be broken, and realize by proxy that repairing it as things stand is borderline impossible. However, what they can do is survive. They have taken it upon themselves to atone for the sins of their forefathers."
"How are we supposed to know who we can trust, though!? It doesn't help if we don't know who we're looking for!"
"Perhaps this will put your mind at ease."
Luna flew over to her sister's side. Mingling their magic, they shifted separate mechanisms behind each respective throne. A concealed tunnel revealed its corridors between their shared seating.
"The location of the mirror was omitted intentionally so no one would ever find it. You've probably surmised by now where it's been hidden, but the portal lies below."
Celestia shifted, motioning for the party to follow.
"What you see below must remain undisclosed, at least for the time being. We will escort you of our own volition to the other side."
"Good thing Apple Bloom ain't here," Applejack stated, reminded of her sister's aversion to underground hideouts, "Cellars back home creep her out as it is."
"Don't worry. I assure you, the passage has been well maintained."
The group followed their monarchs, concentrating their energy to light the way down.
Dimly-lit torches lined freshly-moulded brick, further aiding the party on their quest for ultimate truth. Celestia spoke again, reprising her role as Twilight's former instructor.
"Long before we met, Luna and I studied the archives extensively. We were looking for holes in the human world's defenses. Much as it pains me to admit, we were prepared for the possibility of war with our terrestrial neighbors. It was there a connection began to form. Our worlds are interlinked - bound together by threads of a common lineage."
"How so?" Twilight asked, curious to delve into their planets' shared histories.
"Our cosmic dates are the same. We have been around for as long as each other."
"You mean our worlds are the same age!? That's impossible!"
"Is it really so hard to believe? Time and space are chaotic by their natures. It's not inconceivable two dimensions would share similarities."
"But what does it all mean!? Will we regress like them and start killing each other the same way they did!?"
Celestia chuckled. Her pupil always had a knack for assuming the worst.
"I wouldn't worry so much about that. Even when the tribes were divided, things never escalated to such barbaric levels. I think we're safe for the moment - relatively speaking of course."
"I need an explanation! Not knowing anything is driving me crazy! I can't wander around all day without knowing where we're going! It's all too much! Please, princess! Just tell me what we're supposed to do!"
"Twelve speckles of light. That was what Luna found piercing through the shadows' hold. They were faint, but visible. They are the humans who will aid you on your quest."
"Lights...!?"
"Luna detected a unique source of power emanating from their coordinates. Like the shadows, it was something new - something we've never seen before. If they're able to penetrate through total darkness, that has to mean something. I feel it in my bones..."
Twilight thought it over. Maybe...Just maybe...
"Is one of them a girl with light blonde hair?"
Celestia stopped dead in her tracks. Luna did the same.
"Yes, but-"
"I had a dream about her. That's why I'm so tired. I was up all night trying to figure it out. I knew it felt more real than usual. Even nightmares aren't that vivid."
"A premonition!? Are you quite certain!?"
"If we're thinking of the same person. Would you happen to know her name?"
"Well...No, but we did discover two of their identities while making use of an imaging technique. We were planning to send you to one in particular."
"Who are they?"
"The first is a male in his twenties named Zane. The second appears to be a teenager. We found her while she was settling in for the school day. The top of her worksheet read out Maria Drake in calligraphic handwriting. We're not exactly sure why, but her eyes were kept hidden from our view. Her and the other girl both seem to prefer concealing them. The same applies to another of their group as well. He seems to be related to Maria somehow. Considering their proximity in age, we suspect he might be her brother."
"I wonder if they all know each other. That would make our job so much easier."
"It's worth looking into. We're almost there, anyway."
The party halted before a reinforced structure resembling a door. A barrier had been erected to keep trespassers out. Once again, the sisters combined spells, unlocking the unit with a specialized key.
"The mirror is just behind this drape. I must urge you to proceed with caution. Luna has already directed your course for Earth, though we cannot say for certain where you will emerge. We only have a general idea of the layout, and since Zane was the first to appear, we have fixed your position to his location. All we can tell you for sure is the date, as time is measured differently between our worlds. The card in his office specified October 1st, 1997."
"I'm assuming conditions are similar to ours?"
"More or less. I suggest you find a way to keep warm if possible. It may not be a bad idea to adopt native clothing habits, as they appear better-insulated."
"We'll keep that in mind. Is there anything else we should know?"
"Not that I'm aware of. I only request a full report upon your safe return. Would that be acceptable?"
"Of course. I was already planning on it, anyway."
"Very well. May your endeavors prove fruitful during the sobering times ahead. I shall pray you be well in this era of uncertainty. May the indomitable flame of harmony and courage burn strong, lest we meet again in another life."
Luna removed the portal's covering. Twilight circled back towards her friends.
"Well, this is it. Moment of truth. Is everyone ready?"
"As we'll ever be, Sugarcube," Applejack assured, "We're countin' on ya. Try not to let us down, all right?"
Twilight nodded.
"I'll keep you guys safe, no matter what it takes. Now come along. We've got a job to finish, and I intend to see it through to the end."
One by one, Twilight's friends stepped through, disappearing in a haze of liquefied photons. Celestia stood motionless, collecting her resolve in the hopes their subjects would make it back unharmed.
"Fare thee well, my little ponies, God willing our efforts be not in vain..."

Author's Note
Been recording a video series where I talk about life and the world while playing games in an attempt to provide catharsis. I've had some tough times over the years. So have many. That's why I'm writing this story as well.
For the Torn Heart
Twilight's inspection drifted between egg-white plaster and beige-coated carpeting. Some objects she recognized while others were completely new. The party could focus on modern tech's origins later. For now, they had to find a way to pinpoint their coordinates.
"Looks like we ended up in a private residence. This must be Zane's bedroom."
"Man," Rainbow uttered, "It's so dead in here. You'd think he could afford a streamer or something. Did the economy collapse? I mean, seriously. What's up with this place?"
"Normally, I'd agree," Pinkie acknowledged, "but if even a fraction of what Twilight said's true, humans are a deeply disturbed race. I can't even blame 'em. I wouldn't be feeling much like celebrating either."
"I'm honestly surprised you didn't know about 'em already with all the weird stuff you've pulled off. Still, I'd go insane cooped up somewhere like this. How do you think he does it?"
"We may find out if we search the premises," Twilight interjected, "We have to figure out something - anything that can tell us where we are. Once that's established, we can contact the princesses."
"Where should we start?"
"Folders, documents, it doesn't really matter. There's gotta be something here. Even more info about Zane would help at this point."
"I'm on it."
Rainbow ascended slowly, checking shelves while her friends covered the ground. Nothing of importance surfaced, though that would change soon enough.
"Nothin' up here. Guess we gotta dive deeper."
"Place is pretty clean," Spike pointed out, "I doubt it'll take too long."
Twilight nodded, leading her friends through the door. Strolling through a narrow hallway, they found themselves in what appeared to be Zane's kitchen. Feet from the table, appliances and cookware lined the walls. On the opposite side, stacked neatly in a plastic crate, their objective's goal presented itself. Rainbow smirked in smug satisfaction.
"This is too easy! We keep goin' at this rate, we'll be outta here in no time!"
"While I admire your optimism," Rarity intervened, "I feel it pertinent to remind you our ultimate goal may not be achieved so easily. Whatever arose from this planet's core is powerful enough to mitigate lesser threats. Lord only knows what it's capable of doing to us."
"Lemme at 'em! I'll show those shadow thingies what for!"
Rarity's face lowered, features dry and apathetic. In spite of their progress since first meeting, Rainbow was still too confident for her own good.
"Quite."
"Come on! Have a little faith in your old pal! I gotcha covered, no sweat!"
Focusing on the task at hoof, Twilight drowned out her associates' banter. Levitating the folders, she skimmed them over, reciting their information back to her allies.
"Most of these are tax forms and employment records. The district we're in now is a place called Descanso, Massachusetts. I have no idea whether I'm pronouncing that right, but there are photographs scattered inside."
She showed one of the pictures to her friends. The man portrayed possessed short, dark brown hair and medium green eyes. A noticeable fringe dangled over his rightmost brow.
"His full name is Zane Avery, age twenty-five. Date of birth says he was born August 26th, 1972, making him around our average."
"Looks pretty intense," Spike admitted, "Guess we shouldn't expect much in the way of smiles."
"This would explain why. His parents passed away as a result of natural causes. His mother only died a few months ago, so I'd imagine it's still fresh in his memory."
"Holy cow..."
"Whether we like it or not, we're technically guests now. At the very least, we should respect their boundaries, much like anywhere else. Last thing we need's for them to turn against us too."
"Yeah. I hear ya."
"I can already tell this will be trying. If anyone finds out we're here, we'll have to abort. In the event that turns out to be the case, our only remaining options will prove less than desirable."
"Do me a favor, would ya? Tell me somethin' good. I'm bummed out enough as it is."
"I'm sorry Spike, but we have to consider all possible contingencies. Our hopes of an alliance are shaky at best. If we're gonna get through this, we've gotta stay cordial. He's felt the pain of loss before. If we can turn that to our advantage, we'll be one step closer to making it out of here alive."
"You're lucky I know you. Most wouldn't stomach such a calculated approach to someone else's misery."
"I know. Believe me. If there was any other way, I would do it. It's my responsibility as a princess of Equestria to see all subjects safe and sound. You understand the position such a title puts me in, don't you?"
"Yeah. Doesn't mean I have to like it."
"I promise, I won't hurt him. He's already been through enough."
Spike stared down, gaze lifeless and despondent. He knew his sister spoke the truth, but it was still painful to hear.
"Someone's gotta check outside. May as well be me. Least you can run if something happens. I can't do much, but I'll be able to buy you some time. "
"We're right behind you. Just...Be careful, all right? I don't want you getting hurt either."
True to her word, the others followed closely. Spike cracked open the door, revealing dendrologous scenery accompanied by vegetation. An asphalt path told them town was some distance away.
"Looks like we're alone."
"It's not as different from home as I expected. It reminds me of Fluttershy's cottage, actually - just a little bit bigger."
"Finally," Rainbow vocalized, "I've been feeling cramped since we got to the castle. Least out here, I can spread my wings."
"I suppose it couldn't hurt," Twilight concurred reluctantly, "Just stay close. We don't want anyone getting lost or injured."
"No worries. I know where to listen when it counts."
"The rest of us will study this planet more. Our resources may be limited for the time being, but we'll make do with what we have."
"Um, Twilight," Fluttershy intervened, "I know it's not my place to say, but I think you should rest. You look about ready to keel over. We can handle things from here."
"She's right, Sugarcube," Applejack seconded, "Won't do us no good if our head honcho's outta commission. I may not understand everything, but I'll do my best to help. That's what we're here for after all."
"They're right, Twilight," Spike realized, "You've been in bad shape all morning. I'll stand guard in case something happens. The others'll notice if something goes down."
Twilight sighed once more, relenting to her accomplices' requests. There was no way she could convince them otherwise.
"All right. I leave everything to you. Let me know if anything happens, okay?"
Everyone nodded in unison. It had already been a long day. Fortunately, the tide was about to turn in their favor. All they had to do was wait...
Dark clouds hovered over a gloomy sky. A cool breeze blew past, directing Twilight's attention towards the suburban landscape. In her field of vision, a young woman stood firm, chin held high while trickles of rain splashed against her skin. She was dressed in dark fabrics, sporting black locks consistent with Celestia's description. There was no mistaking it. She had to be Maria. Twilight tried calling out to her, though no sound emerged. However, the Alicorn's thoughts seemed to echo loud and clear.
"Maria, can you hear me?"
Somehow, the pony caught her attention. Turning her head, the Drake held a finger to her lips, silencing Twilight for unknown reasons. As before, the world slowly faded, the latter left to ponder what she'd seen.
"Maria...Who are you...?"
Twilight awoke sometime after five. Spike slept curled up by the frame. The alarm clock next to them was a nifty little device. She'd have to think about investing in one for herself.
"All right," she thought to no one, "Up we go."
Rolling off the bed, the Alicorn returned to where her friends resided. As expected, they were hard at work, breaking down each era and period with the precision of dedicated graduates. Needless to say, she was eager to hear what they'd learned.
"Hey, sleepin' beauty," Rainbow teased, "You were out most of the day. How ya feelin'?"
"You mean other than the overwhelming dread and anxiety? Better. Did you find anything?"
"A shitload. Celestia wasn't kidding about this world bein' similar. Other than a few minor details, our histories are almost exactly the same. Only difference now seems to be the tech. They're way more advanced than we ever could've imagined."
"Any specifics? It might help if we knew what we were dealing with."
"See those lights above us? They're powered by electricity. Same for everything else plugged into outlets. Modern homes are connected to power lines that supply juice. There's a couple different sources they acquire energy from, but the latest appears to be something called nuclear fission. Basically splits stuff apart at the atomic level. Supposedly, it releases massive quantities of energy. It'll likely become humanity's primary mechanism in the future."
"The atomic level!? How didn't I think of that!?"
"Beats me. I barely understood it myself. Kind of a good thing we didn't though. There's a potential drawback if the atoms explode. Gather enough of 'em in one place, you could wipe out a whole city. Probably would've screwed up if we'd tried it before now."
"I see. Fair point."
"Even though Celestia said some of the archives were wrong, a lot of 'em turned out to be true. There've been wars out the wazoo since this planet's inception. No wonder kids are so pissed off these days. The balance of harmony's completely unstable. The world could end at any moment, and no one would know until it did."
"I figured. Couldn't all be wrong now could they?"
"No word on Zane's whereabouts yet, but I suspect he'll be home soon."
"Might've had to run a few errands. There are still things technology can't do yet it seems. Sounds like you've got things covered here. I'll go out and wait on him. I may be able to convince him to listen."
"All right. Have fun with that."
"Yeah. Really."
"Be careful, darling," Rarity advised, "We have no idea what sort of dangers await beyond. Be ready to defend yourself. We'll be here if you need us."
"I know. Thank you. I wouldn't have it any other way."
Rarity smiled. Despite her initial reluctance, their friendship had grown stronger. They were sisters in arms, and if all went well, their chances of returning home safely would increase astronomically. The unicorn had faith. It had only been buried under the initial wave of terror.
Twilight basked in the sunset's fading glow, unable to turn away. The view was calming...Tranquil...Peaceful...It was hard to believe this world posed such a danger. It wasn't like they'd seen the shadows for themselves - not yet, anyway. Why were they taking so long to act? If they were truly so foreboding as the princesses claimed, why hadn't they destroyed humanity? Were they waiting, biding their time for something greater? It didn't make any sense, but they had proof Zane was real. If nothing else, his presence lent credence to their story. Perhaps there was something they were missing. Under such chaotic circumstances, nothing could be ruled out. It wouldn't surprise them in hindsight if something had been overlooked. It was hard to assure anything, especially in situations like these.
"What is that...?"
The Alicorn squinted, locking in on an approaching machine. Its body was made of steel, though the quality left something to be desired. It halted down the path, leaving Twilight to wonder its purpose. From its depths, she saw someone emerge - a man of recognizable stature. Though her senses gave way, the pony's instincts proved sharp as nails. She stepped forward, gradually drawing closer.
"Zane? Zane Avery?"
The human flinched, recoiling in surprise. He hadn't expected to find anyone waiting for him, much less sentient animals from another plane.
"Holy Christ! What are you!? How'd you know my name!?"
"Sorry for scaring you. My name is Twilight Sparkle. I'm an Alicorn from the planet Equus."
"Alicorn? That sounds familiar..."
"It does?"
"I think I heard about 'em in a movie a long time ago. Can't remember which one, though."
Twilight blinked, floored by the revelation.
"A...Movie...?"
"I take it you're not familiar with television? What year's it where you're from?"
"Our worlds are the same age. Your technology evolved faster is all. It might have something to do with our magic. We've relied heavily on its power over the years."
"If that's what you call fast, we're never getting flying cars."
"If I knew what you were talking about, I'd probably agree."
"Sounds like we've both got a lot to learn."
"My friends are waiting inside. There are seven of us in total, including my brother Spike."
"If you're here, somethin' big's goin' down. If you don't mind helpin' with the groceries, I'll listen to what you have to say."
"Of course."
"Thanks."
Inside, Twilight awakened her sibling. Zane was stunned by how many creatures appeared to inhabit their realm. Once the initial shock wore off, he heard them out as promised.
"Equus is made up of a variety of species, each one divided into their own separate continents. Based on our notes, Earth operates similarly, just with more diversity between people."
"Pretty much," Zane confirmed, "There's a large Hispanic population on the east and west coasts. Part of the reason's because Mexico's underneath us. Canada's to the north, though I couldn't tell you the numbers."
"What about where we are specifically?"
"We're in the U.S., short for United States. Our governmental body's more of a democratic republic, though depending on who you ask, it's too corrupt to be a functional one."
"Corruption? Maybe that has something to do with what the princesses were seeing."
"You lost me."
"Our continent Equestria lies under the rule of Celestia and Luna - Alicorn princesses who control the sun and moon. I'm a princess myself, though I've yet to grow accustomed to my role."
"Should've known. You said they saw something? What was it?"
"Shadows."
"Shadows?"
"We haven't seen them ourselves, but princess Luna reported their presence this morning. She's able to travel between dimensions using a portal shaped like a mirror. The pathway between worlds is referred to as the astral plane."
"I've heard about that too, though not quite in the same way. It's usually described as a projected self in other realms of reality. Sounds fairly complicated, but if I had to guess, there are multiple layers to how the whole thing works. Is she able to travel using her physical body?"
Twilight nodded.
"Maybe it's a molecular thing. For all we know, what you call magic isn't all that mysterious. Everything has an explanation. Just takes effort to find it."
"I'm impressed. We're more alike than I thought."
"Had the same idea, huh? I'd imagine it'd cross anyone's mind being around you long enough."
"So you haven't noticed anything weird? No monsters or unusual phenomena in the area?"
"Not lately, but I'll be on the lookout. There anything else I should know?"
"Yes, actually. You wouldn't happen to know anyone named Maria, would you?"
"How long have you been watching us?"
"Not long. I had a dream about a girl a little younger than Spike. It was right before everything went haywire. She had the same hairstyle as Maria, but it was blonde and tied back in a ponytail. We heard both of them were here not long after."
"Sounds like Emily. I know about her, but we've never talked."
"Can you put us in contact with Maria somehow? I'd like to speak with her directly if possible?"
"Sure. I'll call her after dinner. She'll find your story compelling if anything. Maybe we'll figure somethin' out."
"I'd appreciate it."
"No worries. Mi casa es su casa. Least I can do's try to help."
"You're a good man. I can see why Celestia trusts you."
Zane brought out a stereo from the back. It was split into separate sections to accommodate various formats. Placing a disc in the tray, he opened Twilight's companions to a new world of musical complexity. It was a similar style to Maria's choice only half the day before.
"This is the kind of stuff Maria's into. It's a style of rock music called metal. Her and Em listen to it all the time. This band in particular's a group from Sweden called Sacramentum. She's been gettin' into all sorts of melodic stuff there lately."
"It's awesome," Rainbow cut in, "How'd we miss out on this!?"
"Guitars probably. They're electric."
"Ah. That'd explain it."
"I can hear bits and pieces of classical," Twilight noted, "but some of the other influences, I've never heard before. Where did all this come from?"
"Most of it dates back to blues. Lot of it came about as a result of industrialization. The slave trade contributed significantly. Probably part of the reason it sounds so dark today."
"You mean the Trans-Atlantic slave trade pre-dating the civil war?"
"That's the one. Not one of our proudest moments to be sure, but what can you do? Not like anyone today could've stopped it. Just an unfortunate byproduct of living on this planet I suppose."
"I'm sorry things have been so hard for you. To be honest, we know what happened to your parents. We were digging for intel when we stumbled across the certificates by accident."
"It's cool. I thought about ending it for a while. Bullet to the head would've been lights out, but Maria talked me out of it. We've all had our share of troubles. Poor kid's been through hell."
"What happened?"
"Old man was a drinker. Got hammered one night and killed a dude under the influence. Been in prison over a decade now. Supposed to be gettin' out in a few more years. She's been bummed out about it ever since."
"Generally, we try not to kill unless it's absolutely necessary. Life's too precious to be wasted on mindless violence. Even wolves, we tend to sedate them and drop them somewhere in the forest. Compassion and mercy are virtues we've always tried to live by. I wouldn't trade our way of life for anything, even if it does feel artificial some of the time."
"You've got heart. I respect that. You and Maria'll get along just fine."
It was nice to sit down for a warm meal. The group's meeting with Zane had gone smoother than expected. Now they could focus on gathering the others. With Twilight's suspicions confirmed, it wouldn't take long to find them.
"I'll grab a shower when we're done," Zane stated casually, "After you guys call Maria, you wanna see a movie? I've got some good ones on DVD. Figured it'd be a good way to kill time before bed."
"Sure," Twilight accepted, "I think for now, we could all stand to be a little laid back. We weren't expecting to make this much progress. If we take a break, we can tackle the situation more efficiently. Maybe we could stay the night if it's not too much trouble?"
"Not at all. If you're really here to help, I'll accept it gladly. World needs more people like us these days. That's for damn sure."
"I think your parents would be proud. It takes someone special to be recognized by the princesses. If it wasn't for my natural aptitude for magic, none of us would've ever met. It makes me wonder what they see in humans. I suspect we'll find out before too long."
"Thanks. That really means a lot. I'll try not to let 'em down."
The party finished eating, collecting their plates and washing dishes. Spike offered given his experience back home, but Twilight and Zane cut him some slack. Finally, Zane dialed Maria's number, showing everyone how so they could call her alone. He spoke first to ease her in. As they were about to learn, the Drake was more receptive than most. Her worldview differed greatly from the rest of the population to put it mildly.
"Hello...?"
"Hey, Maria."
"Zane? What's up, homie? Everything good?"
"Got some people here lookin' for ya. Said they wanted to chat about somethin' you might find interesting."
"People? Who?"
"Might be better if you hear it from their mouths. I'm gonna hit the showers. I'll be out soon."
"All right. If you say so."
Zane handed the phone to Twilight, marching off towards the restroom. The chord wasn't able to reach, forcing her to improvise. She moved closer, speaking into the receiver.
"Maria? It's Twilight. I'm a new friend of Zane's."
"Twilight? That some kind of code name or somethin'?"
"Not exactly. We're from a planet called Equus. There are seven of us in total."
"Good old-fashioned septet, huh? What'd you guys want with me?"
"Well..."
Twilight told Maria what she knew - about Equus, the princesses, the shadows, and the lights. It took a while to piece everything together, but her explanation came off as coherent. All throughout, Maria listened to her tone. Something told her she was being truthful.
"That's pretty much the whole story. I don't know if you believe it, but-"
"I do."
"Wait, really!?"
"I can tell by the way you explained it. Your mental faculties are more or less intact. You were hoping I could tell you more, right? What do you wanna know?"
"Well, uh...Why don't we start with Emily? I know about what happened today. You two are pretty close, right?"
"How'd you know about that!?"
"I had a vision about her. She was almost eaten by wolves, wasn't she?"
"Magic of yours is pretty potent. That's about the extent of it, yeah."
"We believe the lights are connected. How many people do you actually know?"
"Let's see. There's Zane, Eric, Emily, her folks, my brother Brandon, our mom...And our dad..."
"That makes eleven. We're still missing one. Who else could it be?"
"I don't know..."
Maria's voice fell, having become immersed. It was all so sudden, but if their worlds were at risk, she couldn't just sit back and do nothing. Her deteriorating mental state wasn't lost on the Alicorn.
"Try not to overthink it. We already have most of our candidates. Worst-case scenario, we can ask the princesses to track everyone down."
"You're pretty sharp for a pony. I like it."
"You'll find we're a different breed in contrast to our earthling counterparts."
"So it seems."
"The real question is, what do we do now? Even with the information we've acquired, it won't do us much good unless we know what we're up against."
"Can't help you there, but I might have a way for you to defend yourselves. I've been training extensively in various styles for the last three years. If you follow my lead, you'll be vastly more powerful by the time they show up. Should keep you alive for a while at least."
"How so?"
"Grab a pen and something to write on. I'll walk you through it."
Twilight obliged, asking her friends to gather said components. She wrote down every instruction to the letter, melding what she soon understood to be a combination of civilian and military styles.
"Four days a week repeating each cycle. Got it?"
"Got it."
"Pick out your fighting styles and start as soon as you can. Once we meet up, I'll be able to demonstrate more effectively. Remember: no later than the 29th. It's the only window we'll have."
"I will. I'll let Zane know once he's out. We'll talk to you later. Take care."
"You, too. Don't go dyin' on me, ya hear?"
"We won't. I'll talk to you later."
"Okay. Bye..."
"Bye..."
Twilight hung up the phone, mulling over everything she'd just heard.
"According to Maria, we can find out more about this planet using Zane's computer, whatever that is. We'll ask him about it later. For now, we should try to relax. We hit a small snag, but what we've got now's more than enough to get things moving. We'll hit the hay as soon as the movie's over."
"All right," Rainbow declared deviously, "I'm ready! Bring it on!"
Dragon of Grace: Twilight Stars
Author's Note
Really wanna take my time with this story and make it as interesting as it can possibly be. Act one's all about building the world and characters before we dive into the deep end. We're goin' for a combination burrito made up of old school Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, and Shadow Hearts on super steroids. And of course, we can't forget a nice heaping helping of metal sauce to go with it. It's PURE FUCKIN' STEEL, STRANGAH!
A Warrior's Princess
Twilight's last premonition occurred during the party's first night with Zane. Everyone was there, along with a few other people none of them had met yet. The Alicorn recognized their shelter's structure. Spherical walls encompassed the group, forming a blockade of ice. It became apparent they were inside an igloo. She could tell by Emily and Spike's ages, as well as their powerful gear, that they were several years into the future - four or five at least. All of them were laughing, smiling in the face of seemingly hopeless odds. While it didn't tell her much, there was one crucial detail made all too clear. They survived. Somehow, some way, they'd managed to emerge victorious. Not only that, but they were thriving. No one had to be afraid anymore. So long as they stuck together, invincibility was all but guaranteed.
The party awoke to Zane's alarm screeching. Rainbow rubbed her temples, groaning in dissatisfaction. Still, it was fortunate their anatomy allowed them to sleep anywhere. It made the process of awakening somewhat more tolerable.
"Would somebody turn that darn thing off? Can't even hear myself think..."
"I got it," Twilight replied devilishly, flipping a switch to shut off the device.
"That's gonna get annoying. For an advanced species, they couldn't invent something less shrill? Feels like I lost hearing just from that alone."
"I don't think they're that advanced quite yet. I still see a lot of similarities to the old world. Only difference is the coat of paint it's wearing."
"That explains it. New face, same old tricks."
"I can think of a few other ways to be woken up. I won't say which, but I'm sure they know."
"Beep, beep!" Pinkie sounded, giggling in a manner similar to her old, bubbly self.
"I hope he's not mad," Fluttershy spoke with concern, "I know he's used to waking up early, but this is closer to Sweet Apple Acres. Most townsponies aren't up yet back home."
"I'm sure he'll be fine," Applejack comforted, "Shucks, he was the one who asked us in the first place."
"Everyone wake up for a few minutes. I'll go talk to him. He'll probably want some coffee before we head out."
"All right, Sugarcube. See you in a few."
Twilight nodded, strolling back towards the living room.
Zane slept softly on the couch. It was strange to see someone supposedly so dangerous at their most vulnerable. Twilight could see the sorrow underneath, empathizing with his pain. Brushing a hoof against his cheek, her eyes flickered, shifting from purple to a calming shade of blue...
"Zane..."
"Mmm."
"Morning."
"Hey...Is it time...?"
"Yeah. I told the others you'd want coffee first. I can make you some if you'd like."
"Nah. It's okay. I got it. Need to get up and movin' around anyway."
The human sat up, stretching before popping his neck and shoulders. Something about the sound unnerved Twilight, though she couldn't decipher why.
"Come on. I'll fill you in in the kitchen."
Twilight obliged, following her host. While heating up his coffee, Twilight took the moment of silence as an opportunity to inquire further.
"So you said the shelter was constructed by your grandfather?"
"With dad's help, yeah. During the cold war, he was convinced the soviets would attack at any moment. He thought it might buy us some time to come up with a plan."
"Then the soviet union collapsed, and the project was abandoned. Is that right?"
"Pretty much. It's packed with supplies, but the guns might be need polishing. Think y'all'll be able to handle it?"
"I think we'll manage. Based on what we've told you, I'm almost positive we're up against something supernatural. I don't know if our weapons will have any effect, but we have to try. Doesn't help whatever they are have yet to show themselves, though that's probably a blessing in disguise."
"Long as they don't pop up before we're ready, I think we're in the clear. Fingers crossed anyway."
"So it's settled, then. We'll start training back home and return for Emily's birthday. Once we've convinced them, we can wait it out until the monsters show up. Hopefully by then, we'll be a lot stronger."
"It's the best we got. I'll be training too in my free time. Feel free to drop by on rest days as well. May not be extensive as Maria's, but I've got my share of cool shit to show ya. Rainbow and Spike'll get a kick out of it if nothing else."
"Of course. This world is full of colorful characters. I'm eager to see what you all have in store."
"Stick with me, kid. I'll show you around."
"I'm countin' on ya, old-timer. Don't break a hip on the way down to hell."
"Tss. Y'all are fuckin' crazy, man. Good thing we're all in the same boat then, isn't it?"
"Finish your coffee so we can get goin'. I've got a report to submit."
Zane bowed, rolling his hand in a dramatized motion.
"As you command, your highness. Come on. Let's get outta here."
Zane led the party deeper into the woods, stopping before concrete hidden under dirt by leaves. A rusted chain extended from below, offering extra leverage around the rear.
"This thing's pretty heavy. Mind lendin' me a hand?"
The others nodded. Rainbow and Applejack pulled upward from behind, gripping the chain with their teeth. Everyone pushed forward to aid them. In the light of the sun, they were able to make out the bottom. Handlebars were welded into a fortified structure, beckoning them towards the heart of their destination.
"There's a generator below. I'll head down first and crank up the lights. Feel free to take whatever you need. Be better seein' use up here than sittin' around collecting dust."
In a surprising display of athleticism, the man jumped down, foregoing the ladder in favor of something quicker. His friends rushed towards him, only to find he was completely unharmed.
"Zane," Twilight called out, "are you all right!? What were you thinking!? You could've seriously gotten hurt! What is it with you people!? I swear!"
"It's not as steep as it looks. Don't have to go far when it comes to radiation. I've done this a million times. I know what I'm doin'."
"That kind of reckless attitude is exactly what'll get you killed! Stop and think before you act next time! Geez!"
"Okay, okay. I get it. You comin' down or not?"
Twilight rolled her eyes, floating down in a gentle hover. Normally, Rarity would've insisted on going first, but this wasn't a scenario the average mare wanted to be in. Twilight fell silent, eyes widening in shock.
"It can't be...!"
"What? What's wrong?"
Zane turned back, veering in the direction of her gaze. A bright blue glow emanated from the corner, mixing with violet while springing forth from Earth's mantle. Floating balls of light danced around its stream, falling in line with faith amidst displays of harmonious elegance.
"The fuck...!?"
"What is it," Rarity inquired, "Is everything all right?"
Zane shook his head, muttering the only words he could think of that came to mind. If Twilight couldn't explain it, there was no way he would be able to either.
"I don't know...That thing wasn't here before..."
Zane cranked on the power, everyone else climbing down. Weapons were minimal, though food and medical rations proved substantial. There was enough to last them at least a year.
"Incredible...," Twilight murmured, "You really were ready for an end-of-the-world scenario."
"Back in the day, it would've been plenty, but nukes are bigger now than they were back then. If shit hit the fan, there wouldn't be much left. Least whatever we're dealin' with doesn't seem to be that powerful."
"Power and speed are two different things. Whatever they are, they're moving methodically, systematically destroying your world from the inside. If we don't stop them here, life as we know it will cease to exist. You may feel poorly about your species overall, but we do not. If you can't be motivated to fight for anyone else, I ask you to fight for us. We've done nothing to harm you. You always wanted to be a hero, didn't you? Now's your chance. You'd have to be a fool to waste it."
"I'm with you guys. Long as you're here to help, I'll do what I can to pitch in. Seems like a fair trade from my point of view."
Twilight approached the light, allowing its warmth to ease her distress.
"I feel stronger when I'm near it, like my energy's returning slowly...Gradually...Judging by your reaction, none of us know what's going on. I think we should pack up and head home right away. Celestia and Luna will be eager to hear about our recent escapades. They might have a few answers, though I wouldn't hold my breath. It's either a form of magic we've never seen before or something else entirely. I'll leave that part to you for the moment."
"It almost looks like one of those save point thingies from Maria's games. Wonder if that means it's some kind of healing station. Be awfully convenient if it ended up here, though. You think someone might be tryin' to throw us a bone? Make things a little easier later on down the line?"
"It's possible. If that's the case, it's likely they're doing so in secret, just like the shadows. I doubt they're a defector, though. The shadows rely on instinct, not cognition. Maybe someone else is trying to resist them? But who? Another entity...?"
"I don't know, but whatever it is, I'll take it. More help we can get, the better."
"No point scrambling our brains trying to figure it out now. Things are gonna play out however they're supposed to, so why don't you show us how those guns work over there?"
Zane removed a rifle from the gun rack. There were only three for the time being. The group would have to choose who they wanted to use them later. That was a conversation best saved for another time. For now, the only way they would learn was through proper demonstration.
"This one's a standard .223-caliber bolt-action sniper rifle. It's been modified with a thirty-two milimeter scope intended for precision aiming. You shoot by squeezing the trigger here. There's no ammo inside right now, but to reload, just stick the corresponding rounds in the chamber and lock it. From there, you're good to go."
"Simple enough."
"Remember to follow safety regulations. There are other types of rifles out there, but bolt-actions like these are suited for beginners. I'd say you fit that category to a T."
"Guess we oughta pack up and move out, then. Come on, girls. Let's go."
The party split into groups, filling their bags with what food and medicine they could carry. Zane handed Twilight two of the three rifles, keeping one on hand for himself. Twilight had one last request before her group departed for Equus.
"We're about to head home, but I have one more favor to ask. Rarity's a fashionista who runs a boutique back home. If we're gonna be here on Earth for a while, would it be possible to buy us a few materials? We usually only wear clothes on special occasions, and while I wouldn't classify this with the same connotation, it's definitely unique. Think you could help us out with some fabrics and cobbling?"
"No problem. I'll have everything ready by the time you get back."
"You're a lifesaver. It's fucking freezing up there."
"I was wonderin' when you'd start cursin'. Now that we're teammates on even footing, you're stuck with me. I've got your back, whether you want me to or not."
"I wouldn't have it any other way."
Spike chuckled. It was funny to see Twilight speak her mind so freely. Back home, she'd always done what was expected of her, but on Earth, those expectations were meaningless. He was happy to see her having fun for once. Maybe humans weren't so bad after all.
Celestia struggled to process the vast amounts of information gained over such a short period. Not only had Twilight discovered the identities of their potential saviors, but she'd also found time to pick up on customs and traditions. She'd come a long way from her naïve and introverted days as a foal. The party's progress in general exceeded all levels of precedence. It was extraordinary, in more ways than one.
"Astounding...Completely and utterly astounding. You've outdone yourselves. I expected we would be one step closer to saving our world from destruction, but you've already solved the puzzle..."
"Not quite. There are still mysteries we can't fully explain, like the light in Zane's shelter, and I don't know why I've been having these visions. I only know us and the humans will be close in the future. There's something about them...Their sadness...It makes them care about others more. I'm starting to wonder if maybe we were wrong. Maybe they can be saved after all."
"It makes sense the lights would be kind and compassionate. It's plausible those qualities are rare enough that people who possess them stand out. Divided, our future's all but lost. Together, we possess the power to change history. The struggles humanity endured made them stronger. I'm starting to realize now we're two halves of the same whole. Without one, the other will fall."
"Emily's birthday takes place on Halloween - a holiday equivalent to Nightmare Night here. We'll be spending a few days with her family in Arkansas. Maria and the others will be there as well. There's still a lot we have left to learn, but If it's to save our home, I'll do whatever it takes. No one will ever threaten Equestria again. I'll see to it personally."
Celestia smiled, chuckling in a sigh of relief. Shining wasn't they only one with a strong sense of honor. The future was in good hooves.
"I'm proud of you, Twilight. At first, I thought your coronation would mark the end of your journey. Considering our state of affairs now, I see it's only the beginning. Do what you have to. We'll be here to provide support. If there's anything we can do, please, let us know right away."
Twilight nodded, her resolve unyielding.
"Find a way to keep us in contact. If we're able to communicate between dimensions, you can send in reinforcements should something go wrong."
"Luna and I shall begin our research immediately. Feel free to use the castle grounds for training. I look forward to seeing your progress. Keep us informed if at all possible. We may be able to fulfill advisory positions in addition to our navigational duties. Would this arrangement suit your needs?"
"Yes. Thank you."
The elder placed a hoof upon her former pupil's shoulder. It was time to step aside. The gates of strife's endeavor held within their confines eternal harmony's serenity. It was all she'd ever longed for, ever since her parents passed. Now her protégé would become the key. Caressed by the feathers of angels' comforting wings, there was nothing left to do but gain.
"Be well, my faithful student. The hopes and dreams of all rest within your creation. You're not alone anymore. Your friends will show you the way. All you have to do is trust them."
"I do, princess - with every fiber of my being."
"The light of friendship burns strong. Now it's humanity's turn to listen. Do not let them sink into despair. Should they surrender to self-destruction, our hope will die with them."
"You have my word. I'll save them the way their gods failed to. One door closes, another still opens. The courage to alter course in the face of total nothingness. That is the gift of the Equestria's offspring. I'll cherish this lesson to my dying day."
"So will I, Twilight, as will we all."
Twilight's friends smiled. It was too early now to give up the fight. No matter how horrifying or dire things seemed, they would persevere. It was in their nature. Nothing would ever change that. Not so long as their race persisted.

It's ironic, writing this after I've lost hope we can change course. I suppose we had to create one timeline where our species was held accountable. Too bad it couldn't be the real one.
Darker Shores
With formalities out of the way, Twilight's party began their training, practicing in secret four days per week. Only three of them felt comfortable enough to assume combat positions - Rainbow, Spike, and herself. The siblings took up Zane's offerings, leaving their friend to traditional swordsmanship. The others specialized in more technical fields, ranging from weapon modification to healing and armor. Every so often, they ventured back to Earth, keeping in contact with their expanding array of allies.
"So you were planning a celebration with Eric?" Twilight inquired. She knew a lot about birthdays thanks to Pinkie Pie, but Halloween was more versatile than the typical Nightmare Night back home.
"Yeah," Zane confirmed, "Had to call it off, though. There've been reports about a serial killer stalking the area. Apparently he's been at large for quite a long while."
The human held up an article printed by the local newspaper. So far, there were at least twelve confirmed deaths, with estimates calculating upwards of the forties.
"Sounds pretty serious. I take it you wouldn't have any idea who he is?"
"No, but I know he's a local. Doesn't look like he's killed anybody out of town."
"And I'm assuming you're telling us now because you need help apprehending him. You want him taken in alive."
"That's about the size of it. Like you, I'd rather avoid lethal methodologies. Think you can help me out?"
"I suppose we could do with a test run. Even if it's just four of us, that should be more than enough. What's the plan?"
"One of us will have to act as bait. People like him prey on the weak and unsuspecting, so I figure if we catch him off guard, we can use your magic to subdue him. You've fought off bad guys before. I'm sure you've got a few tricks up your sleeve."
"It's risky," Twilight admitted, "I've never tested my magic on humans before. If it doesn't work, we'll have to try something less preferable."
"That's why I was wondering if we could combine one of your spells with my rifle. There's gotta be something to lessen the blow."
Twilight thought it over. Theoretically, it might work. At worst, they would inflict a flesh wound. All she needed was an opportunity to follow up. If she could manage to pin him down, then maybe...
"Fuck it. I'm in."
"Are you positive," Rarity questioned, "He may only be human, but none of us are immortal by any stretch of the imagination. One wrong move and he'll take you out with him."
"That's a risk we're gonna have to take," Twilight acknowledged, "If our roles were reversed, wouldn't you do the same? Besides, the rest of you will be safe here. Now that we know who's doing what, we can plan our roles accordingly. All you have to do is make sure we go out in style."
"Ah, yes. I see your point."
"Speaking of which," Twilight remembered, turning to Zane for further confirmation, "Did you gather the materials? I've been eager to see what designs you came up with while we were gone."
"I think you'll like 'em. Check it out."
Looking through the man's sketchbook, Twilight nodded, eyeing over drawings inspired directly by rock n' roll culture.
"This'll surprise a lot of folks back home. That's for damn sure."
Rarity spent daylight stitching every crease into place. Each outfit spoke to them individually, being particularly fond of her own. Later that night, Zane, Twilight, Rainbow, and Spike prepared to head out on patrol. Twilight glanced over the human male's vehicle. Its bodily structure was composed of purified metals, having been modeled for optimal posture. With their group cut in half, they could squeeze in no problem.
"So this is your car," the Alicorn asked, "I can only teleport to places I've been to before. We've had to take the express a few times since I moved to Ponyville. How long will it take to get to Arkansas?"
"About a day or two, depending on whether we stop at a motel. Eric'll be here when we're ready to leave."
"Does he know about us? What we are I mean. Maria believed us right away, but I doubt everyone else will."
"I didn't tell him. As a general rule, people don't believe in what they can't see. Hiding it's the only way I'll get him to come down. I don't like lying, but it's for a good reason. That's what I tell myself to justify it anyway."
"Don't take it personally. He'll understand eventually. If he's never had reason to doubt you before, he won't start now. It'll all work out somehow. It has to."
"Yeah...I guess you're right. Let's bring this psycho down."
"That's more like it! Let's move!"
"Here. You'll need these."
Zane tossed each of the party a handheld device. It was shaped in a manner similar to the phone, though the antennae suggested they weren't exactly the same.
"It's a walkie-talkie - sort of a two-way radio we can use to keep in touch. If anything comes up, we can let the others know. The signal only spans about a mile, so keep it on hand at all times. To use it, hold down the button here. Odds are we'll have to split up to find him. Just try not to go too far. Getting separated here could mean the difference between life and death."
"Understood. We'll stay close."
"Let's put this sucker in the clink where he belongs."
The party settled in, buckling themselves down. Zane ignited the engine, stirring the machine to life. Twilight learned during their previous visit motors ran on gasoline, though global supply was limited. She wondered how humans would compensate down the line, knowing their friends would likely all be gray by then. What would transpire between now and then was what concerned her most.
"Open the glove box," Zane requested, "Got a few things in there you might find interesting."
Twilight obliged, pulling down the handle. Inside, she found a number of unusual objects, beginning with a plastic shell. Batteries rested near a bulky black binder. The latter had been crafted through what appeared to be a mix of foam and leather. Zane instructed her to unzip it, revealing a plethora of metal albums released during the decade. Most of them were burned copies sent by Maria through the mail, though a few originals had managed to find their way in as well.
"Why don't you take a look, see if there's anything you like?"
Twilight flipped through the sheathed layers of plastic. She assumed most of them were composed in the same melodic style from their previous escapades. For the most part, she was correct, as was about to be demonstrated through their unanimous vote.
"How about this one?"
She held the case up for her friends. Written in black marker, they were able to make out the band's name, Unanimated, as well as the album's title, In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead. A mystical air surrounded its premise, rooted in medieval folklore. With their home world caught between eras, it only made sense to revisit old classics. All of them had read through poetic psalms at some point during their youth. Twilight was eager to hear how a more aggressive approach could breathe life into their relevance. She wondered how humans found catharsis in such raw forms of expression. Perhaps it was a way to reclaim power when all else seemed in vain. There was always the possibility she would grow to understand in time, but no one knew how long that would take. In fact, if she was being honest, lately it felt like she didn't even know herself. The whole situation had turned her perception upside down. What would she do when this was all over? Who would she be? While the dreams offered some insight, nothing was set in stone. Would she still be bound to rule Equestria once that final corner had been turned?
"Hell yeah," Rainbow exclaimed, "Pop it in!"
Spike agreed, reminded of stories from board games and comics. If nothing else, it'd be fascinating to see how their settings translated to music. Twilight slipped the disc into the car's stereo system. She could only think to ask one question, turning down the volume so her friends could respond accordingly.
"What can you tell me about Maria? I know you mentioned the ordeal with her father, but her demeanor in general appears rather lethargic. She's so low-energy you'd think it was a sugar crash, and trust me, I know from experience."
"To tell you the truth, she's kinda depressed about life overall. Had a falling out with her mom a few years back. Guilt's been eatin' her alive ever since. I don't think she likes the world in general. Goes back to what I said before, about why she hides her face."
"'See no evil'. It's a way to avoid people knowing what she's thinking."
"Pretty much. I've only talked to Brandon a couple of times, but he seems pretty chill. Made something of a name for himself in the psychiatric field. Growing up together probably helped."
"So they're close?"
"Couldn't ask for a better pair, 'specially with the stakes as high as they are now."
"Have you tried persuading them to reconcile with their mom?"
"Didn't wanna push it. I've never seen 'em get angry, and I'd rather keep it that way. They're far more skilled with a weapon than I am."
"Their psychological makeup sounds exceedingly complex. Not sure I'll be able to get an accurate read on 'em."
"They're good people, just a bit troubled is all. What about you? What's your story?"
"I told you before I grew up in Canterlot. Celestia was my mentor until I became a princess. I was actually supposed to take over as ruler of Equestria, but our current circumstances interrupted plans for my coronation."
"So you're technically the queen? If I'd known that, I would've rolled out the red carpet."
"All of us have special talents. Fluttershy owns an animal sanctuary back home, and Applejack runs the family farm. I never brought it up, but her parents passed away when she was young. I don't think she ever fully got over it, not that you can with something so serious. I weep for her silently in ways nobody can see. I wish bad things never happened in life, but that's not the world we live in, especially not for you..."
"I think I know why you're so tightly knit. You're more human than pony in a lot of respects."
"That's the part that worries me. We're two totally different species, yet our behaviors align all too well. What will become of us when our journey here has reached its end...?"
Zane turned his gaze towards Twilight, focusing on the road after a quiet moment of introspection. He felt awful knowing they'd been dragged in against their will, but justice wouldn't come easily. He shuddered to think what they would have to endure before this whole mess was over...
