A Dazzling Flower Under the Moonlight
Double Edged Battles
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe four ponies exited Celestia's castle and made their way leisurely towards the busy central square of Canterlot. Conversation was steady as they descended the hill, the atmosphere relaxed and enveloped in an expectant calm.
As they entered the square, the scene changed abruptly. As soon as they arrived, a thunderous boom greeted them, shaking the streets with several magical explosions. The skies, previously clear and sunny, filled with smoke and flashes of arcane lights. Explosions went off at different points around the square, sending debris of broken glass and debris into the air. The panicked screams of the ponies echoed everywhere as they fled in all directions, transforming the peaceful, commercial atmosphere into utter chaos.
-"By Celestia! What has happened here? This is terrible!" - Aster exclaimed, his voice tinged with concern and surprise. However, he was unable to finish his sentence before another explosion echoed near them, silencing any further attempts at communication.
Shining, Aster and Rainbow (Blooming) immediately understood that it was a threat aimed directly at them. They quickly put themselves on guard, backing away while assessing the situation with their eyes. A reaction that did not go unnoticed by Moonflower, who dared to ask.
- "What's happening Shinning?" - she asked with a tone of ingenuity. The hooded unicorns turned towards them, their horns flashing with menacing magical auras.
One of them, launched a bolt of lightning towards Aster and Shining, who were quick to summon a force field to protect them. Other unicorns began to lash out with their magic in a frenzied attack. Aster and Shinning were doing their best to resist within the magic field.
"What's going on!?" - An anguished Moonflower asked again, her voice rising above the din of the attacks. - "Why are they attacking us?"
"Listen, there's no time for answers now. We need to get them away from Canterlot" - Shining replied hurriedly, her gaze alternating between Moonflower and Blooming, who couldn't do anything due to the fact that she was still playing Rainbow Dash. She needed to find a way to escape.
Suddenly, an unexpected push from behind caused Shining to stumble towards Aster, causing them both to fall to the ground in a whirlwind of confusion. The sudden loss of balance threw them into a state of bewilderment, triggering a domino effect that caused the protective force field to vanish in a flash of magical light. Stunned, Shining watched with wild eyes as Moonflower bravely lunged toward the mysterious attackers, plunging into the confrontation.
In a busy coffee shop near Canterlot's central square, the Wonderbolts were enjoying a seemingly quiet afternoon. The atmosphere was relaxed; the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked desserts filled the air, while laughter and animated conversations echoed through the place.
Suddenly, a deafening explosion shook the windows of the coffee shop, startling everyone present and causing the coffee cups along with the plates to shake. The relaxed atmosphere was instantly shattered, plunging the ponies into a state of alert and panic. The Wonderbolts jumped to their feet, their combat instincts kicking in immediately.
- "What was that!" - Rapidfire exclaimed, his eyes wide with unanticipated surprise.
Before anyone could respond, another detonation rocked the building, causing the ponies inside to scream in terror.
-"Everyone, calm down!" - commanded Spitfire in a firm voice, taking control of the situation. - "Wonderbolts! Attack formation, we are being ambushed!"-she announced loudly as the team obeyed.
In a matter of moments, they grouped together and quickly exited the cafeteria, their gazes scanning the area for the source of the rumble. What they saw horrified them.
In the central square, a group of hooded unicorns were throwing lightning bolts and magical explosions at civilians and nearby buildings, causing chaos. Ponies were running in all directions, desperately trying to avoid the attacks, the whole scene was a total mess, with debris and broken glass strewn everywhere.
- "Is that Aster, Shining Marigold and Dash?" - Rapidfire pointed out urgently, his voice laden with fear and surprise.
At that instant, the team's gaze met a shocking scene: Rainbow Dash, Shining Marigold and Aster, struggling to protect themselves and coordinate a magical defense, seemed to be cornered in the midst of the growing chaos.
"Is that Moonflower!" - Fleetfoot exclaimed, pointing toward the fierce battle in the sky - "How is that possible, she's taking on those attackers alone!" - Spitfire gritted her teeth with a grave expression, as uncertainty and fear gripped the group
"We can't let her fight alone!" - shouted Spitfire, her eyes burning with determination. - "Fleetfoot, Soarin, with me, Rapidfire, Fire Streak, Misty Fly, to the group attacking the civilians, High Wings and Surprise, evacuate the civilians and secure the perimeter NOW!"
Without hesitation, the Wonderbolts launched themselves into the sky with astonishing accuracy and speed. Spitfire, Fleetfoot and Soarin headed straight for the hooded unicorns Moonflower was battling, while the others maintained the corresponding formation to carry out their assigned task. However, on their way they encountered a group of secondary attackers, skillfully led, intercepted them, slowing their advance with impressive magical abilities they had not seen before.
Dash, still starring as Moonflower, was in a fierce battle against the hooded unicorns. Her pegasus wings beat loudly as she dodged and counterattacked with quick energy bolts. The determination in her gaze did not waver, executing evasive maneuvers at great speed to dodge the lethal magic bolts that brushed past her.
Two of the unicorns, floating in the air thanks to a powerful spell, horns glowing in intense purple auras, prepared a counterattack. One of them launched an energy beam straight towards Moonflower, who, this time, had no time to react and received the impact on her side, throwing her violently against a built-up wall.
- " Do you think you can stop us, you arrogant pegasus?" - bellowed one of the hooded figures, their spell-distorted voices echoing laden with malice, though their faces were hidden by hoods.
Moonflower landed determinedly on the rubble, her wings spread in a defiant stance. - "I don't know who you are, but you're mistaken if you think I'll let you attack Canterlot" - she replied in a firm voice, fixing her gaze on the adversaries.
The hooded unicorns exchanged glances, assessing their unsuspecting adversary. One of them, with a mocking laugh, moved dangerously close to the pegasus. - "In that case, it looks like we're going to have to take more drastic measures."
In the blink of an eye, two of the unicorns deployed their magic, creating a glowing magical dome of translucent crystal that encapsulated Moonflower and one of the hooded figures, trapping them in a spellbinding and menacing embrace of energy.
What followed was a fierce exchange of blows, lightning and lunges. Moonflower deployed her dexterity and agility to dodge and counterattack, seeking every crack in her opponent's defense. However, the hooded unicorn was demonstrating formidable resistance, responding with explosive spells and magical blasts.
- "What do you want?" - Moonflower exclaimed, her voice echoing with fury as she launched precise attacks towards her enigmatic opponent.
Hearing her opponent's voice, Dash intuited that it was a mare, which was barely taller than her. Although the hood covered her face and the rest of her body, the aura of insolent confidence was noticeable in her words.
- "Our plans are much bigger than you can imagine" - sneered the unicorn in response with insolent confidence.
The pegasus lunged again at her opponent, deploying all her speed and strength. The clatter of her hooves against the ground echoed with an intensity that sent ripples of energy through the magical dome. Meanwhile, the mysterious adversary responded with magical discharges and lightning bolts, seeking to undermine Moonflower's resistance and find an opportunity to weaken her.
Inside the magical crystal prison, Moonflower and the hooded unicorn were engaged in a tense duel. The pegasus, panting from exertion, held a defiant gaze towards her enigmatic opponent, her magenta eyes reflecting a torrent of determination and questioning, searching for answers in the hidden face of her adversary.
- "Why are you attacking us, what are you looking for with all this!" - Moonflower demanded to know, her eyes burning with anger, she had to know why all this was happening.
The hooded unicorn let out an icy laugh, its echo echoing in the confined space of the magical dome - "Oh, little one, this is just the beginning, a slight demonstration of what we are capable of." - she proclaimed arrogantly.
In a sudden movement, a bolt of magic lightning reached out to graze Moonflower's side, tearing fragments of her uncomfortable attire and revealing a wide swath of cyan fur extending to her wings, though her cutie mark remained hidden beneath the torn fabric.
"A demonstration? For whom?" - Moonflower asked between ragged gasps of pain, holding back the feeling that the burning of her wounds was causing her, but she remained impassive, her mind working quickly on getting answers.
"For those who believe they can change the established order of our realm, the course of our triumphant future" - the hooded figure replied, her voice laden with contempt. - "And that includes you, intruder."
"Intruder? I don't understand, how do I fit into all this?" - Moonflower frowned, perplexed by the baseless accusations.
The hooded unicorn glided with menacing elegance towards Moonflower, her whispering voice laden with subtle venom- "you're the piece that doesn't fit into this puzzle, the one that could disrupt everything"- she declared, her tone revealing a noticeable personal enmity- "you understand, I cannot allow you to stand in the way of my plans...Moonflower."
Immediately, the hooded figure took advantage of the pegasus' moment of distraction to hurl a substantial bolt of lightning that propelled Moonflower against the dome walls. A scream of agony escaped her throat as her body crashed violently against the energy barrier. The pegasus fell to the ground, her suit ripped in several places and revealing burns on her fur.
The unicorn was preparing to launch another blow against Moonflower, who lay on the ground, trying to catch her breath after the intense exchange of attacks. It was then that a sudden rumble shook the dome, shaking its insides and undoing the spell like crystals, falling to fade away.
Through the translucent wall, Moonflower caught a glimpse of several figures hurling themselves at the two hooded unicorns holding the dome up. A weary but relieved smile crossed her lips as her eyelids covered her now unconscious eyes.
The Wonderbolts descended with pinpoint accuracy, interrupting the confrontation between Moonflower and the hooded figure. Spitfire positioned herself determinedly in front of Moonflower, her eyes fixed on the mysterious aggressor.
- "Don't you dare take another step!" - Spitfire warned, her voice laden with authority. The hooded unicorn stepped back, assessing the new situation and numerical disadvantage.
Meanwhile, Soarin and Fleetfoot launched themselves at the two unicorns holding the magic dome from the outside. Soarin unloaded a powerful blow with his foreleg towards one of them, while Fleetfoot intercepted the other with a quick spin and a downward kick.
Spitfire took advantage of the confusion to quickly approach the battered Moonflower, quickly examining it for serious injuries - "Moonflower?" - Spitfire asked urgently, quickly assessing the pegasus' condition. She got no response
The hooded unicorn, now without the protection of the dome, looked around. The other attackers were beginning to retreat, outnumbered by the arrival of the Wonderbolts, the royal brothers and the forces of Celestia's Royal Guard. Even some brave citizens had joined the defense.
- "This isn't over" - the hooded figure hissed, her voice laden with menace. With a quick flick of her horn, she summoned a teleportation spell.
In a burst of violet energy, the assailants disappeared as suddenly as they had arrived, leaving behind them a devastated square, littered with craters and debris.
- "We need medical assistance here, now!" - she shouted urgently, as Soarin and Fleetfoot rushed over to assist. Behind them, the royal brothers, Shinning Marigold and Aster, approached with worried expressions.
In one of the splendid rooms of the castle, quickly converted into a makeshift ward, Moonflower lay inert on a wide bed. The dress, once a mark of casual elegance, now hung from her in rags, stained with dirt and torn in multiple places, small strands of her colorful hair escaped from her elaborate hairstyle, messy witnesses of the fight she defended a few minutes ago, her fur, normally impeccable, was stained with soot and little dried blood that came from small cuts, the feathers of her wings, scorched in some areas, stretched haphazardly at her sides.
The minutes passed with the slowness of a stopped clock, until finally, with a deep sigh, Moonflower began to regain consciousness. Slowly she began to stir slightly, a moan of pain escaping her lips. Immediately, the previously tense atmosphere was interrupted by a general whisper of relief from those present.
The royal unicorn brothers, Shining and Aster, who had stood silently near Moonflower's bed, exchanged a knowing glance before an expression of gratitude and relief flooded their faces.
With a carefully slow movement, Moonflower opened her eyes, blinking against the natural light filtering through the long windows. She tried to sit up, failing in the middle of the process, evidently feeling the aftereffects of her recent confrontation, causing the pain coursing through her body.
Aster, eyes full of uneasiness and mane in disarray, leaned anxiously over Moonflower, almost trembling with fear. - "Moonflower, thank heavens you're awake!" - He said, taking her helmet and hugging it gently.
On the other hand, Shining, with a hilarious mix of feigned anger and genuine relief, couldn't contain herself and rushed over to the pegasus. - "Don't ever do anything like that to me again, do you understand?" - she then gently hugged her. - "I can't tell you how relieved I am that you're okay." - Moonflower smiled at the gesture and made an attempt to reciprocate due to the fatigue running through her body.
Spitfire, noticing the growing agitation around Moonflower, tactfully but firmly intervened - "Your Highnesses, please, let's give her some space, she just woke up" - with this, she gently separated the siblings, who nodded understandingly, though reluctant to let go of Moonflower.
- "I'll go get the doctor and Princess Celestia" - Fleetfoot announced quickly, striding out of the room.
Moonflower looked around, letting out a sigh as she tried to take in the confusion enveloping her thoughts. - "What... happened?" - she whispered, her voice barely a reflective murmur as she struggled to piece together the scattered fragments of memory - "How did I get here?" - She turned a puzzled glance toward Spitfire, who was delicately approaching the right side of the bed.
"You were in the middle of the confrontation and were injured, nothing serious, you'll be fine now" - the mare told her in a leisurely tone. It wasn't the first time she had dealt with ponies that had just fainted and she knew that Moonflower was probably still trying to locate her 5 senses.
"But what happened after that, did you manage to catch the people who caused all this?" - Moonflower asked with clear insistence and bewilderment.
"Calm down Moonflower, everyone is safe again now" - replied Spitfire calmly - "Focus on recovering, there will be time for explanations."
Instantly, the doctor made his presence known, entering followed closely by Princess Celestia and Fleetfoot. The white-robed pegasus approached Moonflower, beginning his evaluation carefully. In an act of respect all present turned and made the customary bow to Princess Celestia, who nodded at the gesture but with her gaze fixed on the mare lying on the bed.
- "Your Highness" - Spirfire began seriously, rejoining - "We have secured the perimeter of the castle and the city. We have found no trace of the attackers" - she reported with a firm tone.
The princess nodded gratefully - "Thank you all very much" - Celestia replied. "Do we have any clues as to the identity of these assailants?" - She inquired with a worried look.
Spitfire shook her head. - "We don't have any concrete details yet, your highness. However, their magical abilities were... unusual" - she expressed cautiously.
The royal brothers exchanged worried glances. Shining Marigold decided to take a step forward - "Princess, I think we should consider the possibility that this is related to.... our situation, as we are sorry, we didn't want to bring this chaos" - she mentioned, the heads of the wonderbolts quickly turned towards her with surprise and suspicion.
- "Your situation? What do you mean?" - Spitfire inquired, arching an eyebrow and squinting with curiosity and puzzlement.
A heavy silence fell over the place, as those present exchanged glances laden with seriousness and distrust. The tense atmosphere was interrupted by the movements of the doctor who approached Moonflower cautiously.
- "I need to examine your wounds closely, miss," - the doctor explained calmly, his attention focused on the damaged dress that still covered Moonflower.
Dash immediately understood the suggestion - "Oh, of course" - she mentioned, sitting up briefly to remove that dress that accompanied her during her fight, which was practically stuck to her and not naturally. The sweat and the little dried blood that remained between her body and the dress, made removing it slightly painful.
Shining Marigold, however, stepped up and interposed herself between the doctor and Moonflower, her countenance tense. - "The dress... you can't take it off" - she insisted, exchanging a meaningful glance with Blooming, who, it should be mentioned, was still representing the Rainbow Dash that everyone, physically, knew.
The doctor frowned, confused. - "But this makes my job difficult, princess. I need to make sure there is no internal damage." - He expressed
Moonflowe nodded in agreement - "the doctor is right Shinning, besides, it's just a dress, nothing more" - with that said and with care, Moonflower and the doctor began to remove the dress, taking care to avoid any unnecessary discomfort during the process.
However, before he could reach the mare's flank, Shining approached decisively and stopped the procedure, taking with a quick movement, Moonflower's helmet - "I insist, Moonflower, this is not appropriate at this time" - she excused herself.
"Are you going to start with that again?, none of us here are wearing uncomfortably sophisticated suits" - replied Moonflower, pulling her helmet away from Shinning's, surprising everyone present, who were genuinely stunned, not by the subject of the dispute, but by the tone with which they were talking to each other, especially Moonflower's, which was unusually familiar and different from the one she adopted. - "Besides, I need to get checked out and with this thing on me, I doubt the doctor can..."
"Excuse me for interrupting, but we have no problem retreating so the doctor can properly check Moonflower" - interrupted Spitfire before the tension could escalate, much to Shinning's fortune.
The team nodded and, one by one, they left the room, Princess Celestia following them. Aster not noticing the slightest movement from her sister assumed she was going to stay, so she left behind the rest with a puzzled and confused gesture.
When everyone left the room, a tense silence settled between Moonflower, Shining Marigold and the doctor. The latter, still puzzled by the situation, took a pair of scissors and began to carefully cut the damaged dress, resuming his work. The touch of the tool tensed Moonflower's body.
- "Relax, I'll try to be as careful as possible" - muttered the doctor, concentrating on his task, Dash nodded and froze in place.
While the dress was being removed, Moonflower kept a stoic expression, Shining Marigold, for her part, watched with growing anxiety, which Dash noticed and couldn't help but wonder why. The answer didn't take that long.
Finally, the last piece of cloth fell away, revealing cyan fur and the unmistakable cutie mark of a rainbow lightning bolt. The doctor paused instinctively, his eyes moving quickly between the newly revealed cutie mark and the mare's face in front of him. Then, he looked towards the door, remembering the other cyan-furred pegasus he had seen outside, a slight dizziness ran through him, he shook his head as he closed and opened his eyes consecutively, he was perplexed.
This of course, did not go unnoticed- "Doctor, is everything all right?" - Moonflower questioned - "how serious is it?" - Shinning, though silent, her expression reflected anxiety and resignation.
- "Rainbow Dash?" - he stammered, backing up a step. - "But... this doesn't make sense" - she muttered, his voice trembling slightly. - "Rainbow Dash is outside with the Wonderbolts. I saw her." - he mentioned still transfixed, looking between the mares and the exit.
Indeed, the branching of the unrecognition spell broke in his mind, allowing him to see the true identity of the mare in front of him.
Rainbow Dash felt her heart racing. - "What are you talking about?" - She asked, trying to remain calm, though her eyes widened in Shinning's direction.
Shining Marigold quickly interjected - "Doctor, please calm down. I know this is confusing, but I assure you everything is under control." - Her voice was firm but non-threatening, seeking to convey urgency without alarming the doctor further - "This is part of a top-level security operation. I need you to check on Rainbow Dash and remain calm. The situation is more complex than it appears."
Rainbow Dash, understanding the gravity of the situation, felt a mixture of alarm and hope. The unrecognition spell was indeed crucially flawed. Dash couldn't help but feel a spark of intrigue and a sense of release at the realization that that which controlled and limited her a few minutes ago, had cracks in it.
The doctor, still visibly disturbed, but somewhat calmed by the words of both, nodded slowly and shook his head- "I... will proceed with the examination." - With that, the doctor began by assessing the bruises and superficial cuts on her sides and paws. Rainbow Dash remained silent a contemplative as she was checked, her gaze alternating between Shining Marigold and the puzzled doctor, her mind racing with the implications of this discovery.
In those moments she glimpsed beyond the immediate chaos, imagining this unexpected twist as more than a mere interruption, it was the possibility of controlling her destiny in a way that had previously been forbidden to her.
The idea of keeping this knowledge as an ace up her sleeve was leading her to explore the shadows of her own morality and face uncomfortable truths for the sisters, for yes, she has learned the hard way to keep her own cards close to her chest and to be prepared for any eventuality that might cross her path, plus, rewinding the facts, it did not take her long to analyze and deduce that, obviously, the sisters were aware of these spell flaws, and that of course, she knew they were unlikely to reveal it to her.
-"You have multiple bruises, but none seem to be severe. Most will heal in a few days with proper treatment" - the doctor suddenly said, as he applied an ointment over the affected areas, breaking the silence. He then moved on to the deeper wounds, looking closely at the burns on his side and chest.
- "These burns on your side and chest need more specific care" - the doctor continued. - "I'm going to clean them and apply a special ointment and depending on their condition, they are unlikely to leave any marks on your skin" - The doctor used a sterile solution to clean the burns, then applied the ointment with precision.
Shining Marigold watched with rigorous attention to each and every movement, witnessing the anxiety and fear of moments before fade away, giving way to a clearer and deeper anguish for Dash's health. - "And what of his general condition?" - she asked, her concern evident.
- "She is stable, though clearly exhausted." -answered the doctor gravely. - "She will need rest to fully recover and return to her daily life. In addition, I have noticed signs of extreme stress, which is not surprising given recent events."
Once the examination was over, Shining Marigold covered Rainbow with a blanket, her countenance showing a mixture of emotions that Dash could not decipher. Then, she turned to the doctor with a gesture of thanks. - "Thank you for your attention, doctor" - she expressed politely and walked over to hold out her helmet as a gesture of gratitude. The doctor, slightly hesitant, nodded slowly in acceptance.
- "I hope I can repay you someday for your help and for keeping this unwitting secret" - Shining murmured, her voice laden with guilt.
The doctor frowned - "What do you mean, your highness?" - he questioned in bewilderment.
Wordlessly, Shinning's horn glowed with soft intensity, enveloping the doctor in a fleeting flash, which hit him subtly as he slumped to the floor of the room, temporarily asleep.
Rainbow Dash sat up with a jolt, awakening some previously appeased aches and pains in her joints. - "What are you doing!" - She exclaimed in alarm.
Shining looked at her with a mixture of guilt and determination. - "It was necessary. Rainbow, you must understand the gravity of the situation and he couldn't have known that" - she explained solemnly, trying to justify an action that inside she knew it wasn't right.
"But was it really necessary?" -Dash questioned angrily, pointing to the sleeping doctor. - "What threat did he pose? He was just doing his job." - she reproached Shinning, voicing her disagreement.
"It's crucial that you understand that, if anyone discovers your true identity or the nature of this spell, the consequences could trigger an unfortunate outcome for both of you, and you don't want to risk that do you?" - she observed her with a raised and serious eyebrow.
"Are you threatening me again?" - Rainbow asked, her eyes narrowed, sensing defiance in her words.
"No, I'm warning you," - Shining replied in a serene but firm voice. - "There are forces at play that you don't fully understand, and we cannot allow your true identity to shine through in this way, no one must find out" - she stated, averting her gaze to the doctor with some heaviness before adding cautiously - "Otherwise, the consequences will fall on whoever discovers the truth, and I doubt you want to risk the memory of other ponies."
Dash followed her gaze - "And what happens when he wakes up?" - She averts her gaze to stare at Shinnig with a scowl.
"The spell will erase the last few minutes of his memory. He'll think he finished examining you without incident." -she replied solemnly as she slowly moved closer to Dash and tucked the blanket over her again, making sure her body was completely covered
"I'll get the others" - Shining announced, heading for the door. Before closing the door, she gave her one last look. - "Get some rest, Rainbow. Important things are coming and you'll need to be prepared."
With those words, Shining left the room, leaving Rainbow Dash alone with her thoughts. The pegasus closed her eyes, feeling the weight of responsibility on her shoulders, aside from the already obvious physical pain from the fight. Both Shinning's and the hooded figure's words haunted her mind.
- "What trouble have I gotten myself into?" - She muttered to herself, gazing at the ceiling.
Earlier, she had thought that understanding the limitations of the spell might become an advantage, a resource she could use to her advantage without complications. Now, however, she was faced with the stark reality that this tool was a double-edged sword, capable of hurting as well as protecting.
The prospect of keeping silent and keeping her identity hidden was becoming a heavy burden on her wings. Rainbow Dash sighed deeply, feeling each breath fanning the pain in her bruised ribs, the solitude of the room amplifying the echo of her thoughts, each more disturbing than the last.
-"How can I be loyal when I can't even be myself?" -she asked the air.
Silence was the only thing that answered her, albeit with a cruel indifference, and she hated knowing she was getting used to this one.
