“Twilight, I’m heading out.” Star called along the crystal hallway. She knew from practice her voice would just reach the library, where Twilight always was this time of day. Going out for groceries had become a little ritual with Twilight too busy to remember to eat half the time, much less shop. She opened the front door and took a set out, nearly colliding with someone at the door, narrowly hopping back in surprise. Standing in front of the door with her usual neutral expression was Pinkie Pie’s sister. “Oh...Maud. What a coincidence. Are you coming to help Twilight out with her work?”
“Something like that.” Maud flatly replied. She'd been visiting Ponyville for the past week and part of her time had been with Twilight in the library. Starlight had been busy on her own projects and didn't know what Maud was doing to help, much less how Maud could help unless Twilight was researching spells about rocks. Twilight had declared Maud’s help essential though, and that was good enough for Star.
“Well, I hope you have a good time with it. I’m grabbing some food in the market. You could stay tonight for dinner perhaps.”
"I won't be staying long. I have some other things that need to be done first."
"Oh, of course." Star nodded at the vague reply. "Well, if I don't see you when I'm back, please have a great time with Twilight." She half stepped out and around Maud and left the door open for her.
Maud only responded with a slight nod and walked in. She worked her way towards the library, looking over the striation of the gypsum crystal that most of the walls were composed of. It was a very common rock, though not in this particular region. Why the Tree of Harmony’s magic had chosen angelite as a base construction material had largely proven impossible to determine. Magic was never good at having explanations, just like people. Rocks, on the other hand, obeyed very strict rules. Their presence, shape, and structure were all easily understood for those with the ability to look and the skill to work with them.
Down the long corridor, Maud turned and saw Twilight at her main research desk in the library, hard at work with two separate books nestled in her arms and a quill magically dancing along parchment. She looked up with a smile. “Welcome Maud, I’m just doing a little cross referencing on these spell-books.” Twilight carefully set the two books down, standing up from her chair and walked over to Maud. “I wasn’t expecting you today, though you have been really helpful with my research.”
Maud nodded. “I know. I forgot to have you expect me today because it's just time for activation.” Maud held out her index finger.
Twilight looked quizzically, “Activation? What do you mean?”
Maud ignored the question. “My finger is a rock hammer.”
Something about that phrase made Twilight shiver. There was something…off. There was something she was forgetting that was very important. Maud reached out and gently tapped Twilight’s forehead with her finger.

"This is all according to plan. You need to be activated too before I go."
"Maud...did you do something to Twilight?" Spike tensed, wondering if he needed to run.

Star set her grocery bag down and picked up Spike's clothes as they were closer. A magical accident was the most likely explanation. I'm both loathe to not have an update for the more important series, but this story has been an April Fool's plot bunny in my head for quite a while, and it provided enough incentive for me to pick up a pen again.
Life has taken a few different turns, with a new job and some other changes but I'm working to slowly get myself back on track. This work above is a bit looser, quicker, and less "serious", and I'm going to try to give it an update once a week to get me back onto the swing of regularly writing sessions.
