A mare climbed upon a steep staircase that filled the engraved cliff face of an obsidian rock. It towered over the shoreline with its oppressive shadow, which to the ponies down by the sand celebrated its cool air from the summer sun. To those ponies, it was just your average rock with a random flowing staircase that they could see reach an exposed apex facing the ocean. To the mare climbing its narrow intrusion of the rock, this mammoth of strength was her home. She ruled everything on, around, and even within her impenetrable tower of obsidian stone.
‘It is funny that the ponies of everyday life now do not remember her origins. By all accounts, they are taught their history as they grow and learn more about the world around them, and yet, they do not remember or even know of her existence.
I find it very funny, and also very, very tragic because that means everything she has accomplished for the betterment of the populace here will never be known. It breaks my heart to no end to see her become this hermit who stole her body from her. Because of the fundamental part of her life force, she sacrificed to save the world from cataclysmic destruction—destruction formed by a mad old god that hid herself in the form of an alicorn.
Please, humor me in imparting this tale. I would love to share the origins of this obsidian apex and the ruler that confides within its walls.’
Rain pittered and pattered against the window pane in the lavender unicorn's room. It was the very early morning hours when she woke from slumber. Her eyes adjusted to the light in her room from the bare window. She turned to face the environment outside her protective house. ‘The pegasi have been hard at work as of late. This is the seventeenth thunderstorm this month.’ She softly croaked. ‘Well, they have been trying to stop a drought from forming Twilight. You know the drought that every weather pony has been ringing sirens about?’ Stated a purple dragon. ‘I know Spike, but this is not going to fix it completely. If they keep inundating the soil with water like this, the ground will never keep the saturation.’ Twilight spoke as she got up from bed.
‘But it has to… Or the outcome from the superheated firestorm will burn everything.’ Spike rung his claws nervously. ‘I know spike… Come here.’ Twilight sat with her forelegs open, inviting Spike for a cuddle. He took the offer and ran straight to her, his eyes almost shedding the water pooling in them. ‘Twilight I don’t want that storm to happen.’ Twilight's chest fluff muffled him. ‘Shhh Spike. We will worry about it when the time comes… I know what is going to cheer you up.’ Twilight giggled softly. ‘You do?’ Spiked asked. ‘Mhm, Rarity is coming by for a visit and she is also bringing something special.’ Twilight smiled softly as she pulled Spike to face her.
He smiled back ‘Can you tell me what the surprise is?’ He asked curiously. ‘Nope! That would defeat the purpose of it being a surprise, now wouldn't it?’ She said teasingly. Spike pouted, but before he could speak, the bell attached to the oak door in her tree house rang.
‘Ah, that must be her now.’ Twilight chimed. She got up from holding her most loyal friend as she trotted to the door and opened it. ‘Twilight!’ Geeted the snow-white unicorn with her high-pitched mirth. ‘Rarity, please come in.’ Twilight gestured. Rarity smiled as he trotted inside. Spike noticed a blue box ‘Hey ya Rarity.’ He said as he waved in her direction.
‘Hello, Spike. A little bird told me that today is a special day.’ Rarity giggled to herself. ‘Spike, can you bring out some plates please?’ Twilight asked. Spike nodded, leaving the living room to Twilight and Rarity.
‘Thank you again for visiting Spike, Rarity. I know the other girls are quite busy with their day, today.’ She said as she helped unload the box from Rarity's back. ‘It is quite alright darling. After all, I am quite free for the foreseeable future.’ Rarity said matter of factly. ‘With Sweety Bell off visiting mother and father, well, it has been a blessing and a curse.’ Rarity’s mirth slowly dwindled as she sat on the couch with Twilight. ‘A curse? How so?’ Twilight asked softly. ‘Well, I am ever fortunate that she is away on holiday, and that in itself is quite the blessing. Because it is quiet you see, and because it is quiet. I sort of don’t like it.’ Rarity said softly.
She turned to Twilight ‘How do you find ways to distract yourself from that nagging part of your brain? The one where you are longing for the sauce of chaos back into your life?’ Rarity asked. Twilight pondered for a moment. ‘If Spike left the nest? Or with him just not being around me?’ Twilight asked. ‘Both, I think.’ Rarity looked down. ‘I don’t know Rarity. I guess it would be quite the situation I would be in. Then again, I think my heart would long for the sound of his feet pattering on the floor… I think that is the one sound that gets me up in the morning.’ Twilight confided. Rarity’s eyes shone brightly as she looked back to Twilight ‘That is it. You have made my predicament make sense.’ Rarity said excitedly. Twilight looked on in shock from the sudden outburst. ‘I have?’ Twilight asked confused.
‘Yes, you have darling. The reason why I feel lost without Sweety Bell in the house or anywhere I am for that matter. It is because I am so used to the noises she would make. Thank you Twilight.’ Rarity hugged her softly. ‘I am glad I could have helped, Rarity.’ Twilight hugged back softly.
Shortly after, Spike came back into the room with three plates ‘Are you guys ok? I heard some commotion over here.’ He asked concerned. Rarity nodded ‘Quite alright Spike.’
Twilight used her magic to bring the blue box from the table over to them. ‘Spike this is for you.’ She said as the box lowered to the ground in front of him. Rarity’s magic took hold of the plate Spike was holding. He let go as he looked at the box. ‘Can I open it?’ he asked. Twilight nodded.
Spike's face gleamed with a smile as he opened it up. ‘Whoa, it’s a sapphire cake. It even has sapphire flakes on it.’ He excitedly told Twilight. Both Twilight and Rarity giggled softly before saying in unison ‘HAPPY HATCHING DAY SPIKE!’
Spike ran over to them and held them in a group hug ‘Thank you, you guys. You are the best.’
