The Legend Of Spyro And Spike
16: The Ancient Grove
Previous ChapterNext ChapterAfter everyone had planned out on what to do next, Ignitus instructed Spike, Cynder and Spyro head to a place called the Ancient Grove, a dark forest that is far far away from the main lands, the waters were poisonous and everyone knew it shouldn't be touched, they could tell it was a dark place that only the bravest or foolish to come here, and Spike just felt fear as they flew closer and closer to it.
But if there was one thing that concerned Spike the most, it was the visions he's been having, ever since they've saved Cynder, Spike's been having multiple nightmares about his home being attacked by the Dark Armies, it was a lot like the one Spike explained to the others about too, he saw stuff that had Equestria being burned to ash, the grassy and peaceful fields of Ponyville were now a war torn wasteland, so many innocent people have lost their lives, and he sees the Dark Master over looking all the destruction, all with that strange dragon he's corrupted..
As Spike, Spyro and Cynder flew closer to the Ancient Grove, Spike remembered what Ignitus said to them just before they departed for a while.
" There is an ancient grove within the forest at the end of the Silver River, it is a secret place untouched by civilization. The Waters there are poisonous as well as the creatures who live there, but you shouldn't have to worry about encountering any of them. Trust your instincts.." Ignitus said calmly while Spike and Spyro see Cyril and the other guardians fly off to do their respective parts too to warn everyone of what's to come.
"I will stay back here at the temple, and when your task is complete, we will leave it and find a place to regroup and figure out what to do." Ignitus finished as he watched them all from the view of the temple, and prayed that they would come back home safe.
Spike took a a calm deep breath as they were finally arriving at the Ancient Grove, and to say it bluntly, this place looked ever worse then the Everfree forest when Nightmare Moon had invaded, Spike had nightmares about that place when he was told to stay behind, and this was 100 times worst then this, the waters were a cold dark purple color that told them it was poisonous, they could feel themselves being watched from every corner by the monsters of the forest, and as they landed, Spike could even feel the grass, and how dead it really felt here.
"Oh yes lovely, he always sends us to the nicest places!" Sparx said sarcastically looking at this place.
"How in Celestia's name anyone's made it through here is beyond me." Spike said with fear while looking around the place too.
"Oh come on guys it's not that bad." Spyro assured looking around too, but to ruin that, they could see the red eyes of dozens of monsters stick out of the trees which terrified Sparx even more.
Well sure! If you ignore the beasts and all the visons of doom and eternal darkness, which sounds lovely by the way. Oh and the fact that we have to move through this magical creepy forest in search of some tree, what's not to love?!" Sparx asked sarcastically again.
Cynder shook her head at this and went in front of them before she made a loud screeching roar that scared off the monsters for now, they were shocked with her roar still before she turned back to them.
"Let's just get going guys, the more we're here the more I feel uneasy, I'm sure we all wanna get through this place as fast as we can." Cynder said while moving ahead of them.
"Yep, right behind you." Sparx said quickly catching up with her.
"I don't think this place will be a bother to Cynder with what she just did." Spyro suggested while they were catching up too.
"Given what she's known as to others, it's best she uses that to her advantage." Spike replied before they finally started moving through the dark forest to find this tree.
The group started making they're way through the forest as safely as they could, Spike never thought he'd come to a place that reminded him so much of his home, and in a bad way. Considering Spike's just had so many bad visions about the future, and where they are now, Spike just felt his darkness growing even more.
The three of them jumped off a moving platform that slowly went down a waterfall that led to a higher ledge, the poisonous water slowed the object down and they could take advantage of it, Cynder looked around the place with disgust and already hated being here.
"I am so glad my army didn't invade this place when I was still a monster." Cynder said looking around the place which concerned the others a bit.
"You mean that you didn't try taking over this place?" Spyro asked walking besides her who nodded in response.
"I saw no use for this place, with how dead and evil it already was, me and my forces saw it as worthless, even if there were survivors that made they're way through here, it's not like there'd be much to find once they got through." Cynder answered bluntly which was interesting.
"I'm surprised to know that even you didn't want to come to this place, guess everyone has they're sense of being safe huh?" Spike joked which everyone chuckled at.
"If by safe you mean being in a dark tower hundreds of miles above the ground surrounded by dangerous weather and a crystal field for over 12 years, then yes, it was safer." Cynder replied which now worried them upon reflecting on where she was.
Spike knew that there were barely any safe places in this world, when Cynder was in charge it was almost impossible to find a place of sanctuary, and the temple was the only place they had once they took it back, and now, they're on they're own..
"Hard to believe we went so long without knowing about this.. we're all around 12 at this point, and yet if Spyro was raised by Ignitus, or if I found out about this world sooner.. so much could've been avoided if any of us knew.." Spike said with regret which they all felt too.
"I know.. I'm meant to be the dragon that will save this world, and the fact I went so long without even knowing what's on beyond our home makes me wish I knew so much sooner, I could've saved Cynder sooner, and we could've found you in a less then awful way.." Spyro said regretfully, he was supposed to save everyone once he was ready, even with Cynder freed, he feels like this won't be enough for him yet..
"You were too young to know about that stuff you two, I was well past an adult age when I was corrupted and was.. a monster.. but deep down.. I just wish what could've been if I found my son sooner, or imagined what would've happened if Spyro was properly raised by Ignitus.." Cyder said sadly as well, there was so much that could've avoided all this destruction, and they felt awful for not preventing it sooner.
Sparx saw they all were in a state of regret, but he tried helping them out to make things better.
"Hey come on now guys, if Spyro wasn't found by my parents we never would've raised Spyro into the brave guy he is now, same with Spike, I don't know what would've happened to him if he hadn't escaped, even though we know now, let's just be glad nothing worse happened, because in all honestly, it could always get worse." Sparx advised which they did find true in areas.
" I guess that's true Sparx, I just wish I knew about my mother sooner, or if there was anything about this realm that could've tied to my origin sooner, I could've done anything to help it, and even though I helped now, we're only in for something far worse down the line.." Spike said as he looked up at the sky, and saw the two moons were even closer once again. it would be less then a week before they fully eclipse.
"We can't change the past guys, but the only thing we can do now is keep going forward, let's find this Chronicler and see what he knows, there has to be a way out of all this." Spyro said hopefully while he moved ahead of them.
"He's right son, let's go, we need to find him soon." Cynder agreed while they kept on moving through the grove.
The group kept making their way through the place and avoided as many deadly traps they could come across, there were falling trees that collapsed after years of living in weak environments, strange termites that would latch onto them to try and take them down, to visions monsters that would occasionally jump out of the tree to attack, Spike and the others always kept they're guard up no matter what here, and they wouldn't put it down until they finally leave the place.
As they kept making they're way through the place, they heard a wolf howl again and saw more monsters running to them followed by a much larger one, Spike summoned his Dark scythe again and Spyro readied his fire while Cynder prepared her wind powers, And they all charged at eachother to take one another down.
Spike twirled his scythe around and made a loud battle cry before he swung it in front of them and he shot a powerful dark wave from it which cut through most of them easily, Spyro used his Comet Dash attack to spiral through some of the enemy's which launched them in the air, and Cynder used her Wind powers by creating a whirlwind around her body, and she launched it to the monsters to take the smaller ones down.
The huge one roared at them all and swung a large mace at them, Spike flipped away from the mace and then started running on top of it to counter attack, Spike screamed again before he raised his weapon in the air and slashed at the thing on the head, this made it stumble back a bit and Spyro and Cynder finished it off by combining they're powers, Spyro and Cynder shot Fire and Wind at it and it created a flaming tornado which spiraled around the monster, and the wind was so strong it completely knocked the monster into the poisonous water, where it drowned inside of it.
Spike landed back down with the others and they took some breaths to recover for a moment.
"Your getting better with my dark powers son." Cynder complimented turning to him which he felt proud for.
"Hey, it wasn't as cool as you and Spyro's combined move, that was really sick!" Spike said eagerly and hoped he'll do that one day when he has all his powers back.
"It was a team effort guys, we're all doing good so far, let's keep moving." Spyro said proudly while he moved ahead again, and the other two followed suit.
They all soon came into a large open area that had moving platforms going up and down, there was a way out of it just at the end, but they needed to platform they're way to it. They carefully glided they're way to the taller ones after taking some brave jumps across the dangerous water, Spike used his darkness to take down more of the pesky bugs that kept coming to them, and Spyro burned the rest away to clear the path. Cynder used her wind powers to push back more of the trees, and they were able to make they're way to the end of it and kept moving forward.
As they kept making they're way through, Spike's mind kept on flashing to those visions he had, he winced at the sights of his home being burned down, he felt dread after seeing Celestia's own castle being destroyed by a huge magma monster, and he looked horrified when he saw the Crystal Empire was completely destroyed, and was now a lava filled wasteland, in fact.. most of Spike's home turned out even worse then what the Dragon Lands already were..
"Spike? Spike!" Cynder shouted which snapped him out of his thoughts, and he saw Spyro and Cynder looking at him.
"You alright Spike?" Sparx asked concerned for him.
"I.. don't know.. I was just lost in my thoughts.. really bad ones.." Spike said with worry while they kept moving some more.
"I can see something's troubling you son, what is it?" Cynder asked walking closer to him.
Spike sighed hearing that and he couldn't hide it, these visions are getting out of hand, and Spike may be having it worse then Spyro right now.
"I just.. I keep having awful visions of the future, I don't know why they keep coming to me now of all times, but each one I see. they just show something awful on what's to come to my home if we don't stop this soon.." Spike said with fear while he looked at his dark body.
"What did you see Spike?" Spyro asked worried to hear that.
"I.. I keep seeing my home in ruins.. so many people killed from the Dark Armies, and that dragon that was corrupted.. I keep hearing her screams of pain being turned into roars of rage.. and.. I see her attacking my friends.. and almost killing them.." Spike said with fear as he can't shake them out of his mind.
"Why would the Dark Master even want another dragon? If he's gonna be freed at one point anyway, what more does he need with them?" Sparx asked confused with that logic.
"He's a cold heartless monster Sparx, he revels in people being in pain and despair, and if he does end up capturing this dragon you keep seeing, we're gonna be in for a fight if we ever meet her." Cynder said seriously which was concerning.
Spike gulped hearing that and really didn't want them to come to pass.
"But if we're having all these visions and nightmares, is there anyway we can stop them from happening? I know we have to find the Chronicler and everything.. but what can we do to stop this really?" Spike asked worried on all of this.
"I don't know, the Dark Master will no doubt be the strongest person we'd ever face, even the villains you've faced back in Equestria wouldn't compare to me when I was corrupted, and if you think that's bad.. it'll only be far worse then we think.." Cynder said while reflecting on what Spike told her about they're past villains.
"We're all afraid of what's to come Spike, but there is a way to stop it, I know there is, Let's try and prevent them alright? I see the way through just now, let's go." Spyro declared while he ran even faster, Spike and Cynder looked at eachother one more time before they hurried after him to hopefully find this tree faster.
The group kept making they're way down the path until they suddenly heard some strange voices which made them stop in they're tracks.
"Get down." Cynder whispered just as they hid behind a corner, they peaked behind it and were confused when they saw what looked like pirates moving through the place and were searching for something.
"Alright maggots! Time to spread out! Don't bother snaring anything smaller then a scurvy wing, Skabb only wants prized fighters this time! And double the bounty for the one who captures Arborick!" The leader announced to some more pirates who cheered widely hearing that.
"What are pirates doing out here?" Spike whispered confused with what they're here for.
"I don't know, Ignitus said this place was abandoned." Spyro whispered as well while they kept hiding from them.
"We should get out of here before they see us." Cynder suggested while they were turning around to leave.
"All those in favor of those who want to turn back?" Sparx announced which was too loud for them not to hear.
Cynder hissed at Sparx for that and was annoyed with him for this.
"Don't you ever know when to shut up?!" Cynder asked annoyed with him exposing them.
"Well I don't see you do anything miss Terror of the Skies!" Sparx mocked getting in her face, but she growled with anger hearing that name she hated.
"If Spyro and Spike weren't here, I'd eat you right here and now for calling me that." Cynder threatened which actually scared him and he backed up to the others.
"Eh.. sorry about that I didn't mean it!" Sparx apologized while hiding behind them.
"Calm down Cynder, we need to get out of here before they... they..." Spike said as he was suddenly feeling tired again.
"Oh.. come.. on.." Spyro said annoyed before he and Spike both passed out at once again.
"You've gotta be kidding me.." Cynder said annoyed with this.
"Who goes there?!" One of the pirates asked which irritated her, Cynder turned around to them as they were about to find them, but Cynder took a deep breath and made a loud veracious roar which scared all of them greatly.
"It'd be a monster! Run!!" One of the pirates screamed while running away and the others followed behind, Cynder took a deep breath and calmed down as they left, and Sparx chuckled nervously since they were alone here.
"So.. would it help to say I'm sorry for that?" Sparx asked nervously, but Cynder turned to him and made a little smirk which made Sparx nervous.
"Once I properly teach you a lesson little dragonfly." Cynder mocked while she was marching too him in a threatening way and Sparx began backing up.
"Mommy!!" Sparx screamed with terror before he flew away for his life while Cynder chased after him.
"Get back here you little pest!" Cynder screamed while the camera zooms into Spike and Spyro's heads and the screen fades to white..
Spike and Spyro wake up with a gasp once again and they finally wake up once more.
"Ugh.. why do we have to pass out like that?" Spike asked with a groan while he and Spyro were getting up.
"I don't know, but it always happens to be at a bad time.." Spyro said annoyed as well while they look around the place. They can see they're back in that dream like world they were before where they got their powers back, and if they're here, that means someone else is too.
"It's cold here.." Spyro said while shivering a bit, Spike could feel the cold too and he noticed snowflakes were floating around the area.
"Guess we know which power your getting back next.." Spike said while he tried warming up his hands.
Spyro and Spike looked over the ledge and saw two large circles in a path just like before, one was a dark blue while the other was a dark red, and they glided they're way over to it to see what it'll unlock.
"Chronicler? Are you there? We've done what you asked but I'm afraid we're lost." Spyro asked looking around the area to hear his voice.
"As long as the spirits of the Ancestors are with you, you are never lost young dragons. Calm yourself Spyro, and cool your thoughts. As for you Spike, while I know you fear the future, unless you push past it, or learn to control it, you'll never truly become the warrior your meant to be. Step into the light, and embrace it.." Chronicler instructed once more.
"Whatever you say.." Spike said as he and Spyro hopped onto them.
Spike and Spyro closed they're eyes once again and harnessed the power around them, Spike felt his fear growing once more, but he also felt it strengthening him, every vision he had about Equestria's destruction flashed through him all at once over and over, but he wasn't about to let someone destroy what he cares about so much. Spike and Spyro began floating in the air again, they felt the powers of Ice and Fear awaken within them, Spike took a deep breath while Spyro closed his wings around him, and once they opened they're eyes, they both made a loud and powerful roar which sent the elements bursting around them.
Spike took a deep breath and looked at himself once again, he felt even stronger now after awakening another one of his mom's powers, and now.. these ones were Fear.
"I knew you'd remember you two, life seeks out balance young ones, and one who can control Ice and Fire, and Fear and Darkness, truly can help with shifting the balance to the good side." Chronicler said proudly while they looked at themselves again.
"I don't even know if this is considered an Element at this point, but it's pretty cool." Spike said with a grin which made Spyro look at him.
"That wasn't a pun was it?" Spyro asked hoping that wasn't and Spike laughed a bit.
"Haha.. yeah.. no. I'm not that bad at making jokes." Spike replied bluntly which he chuckled at.
"Good to know." Spyro replied as they looked ahead again and saw the path can be moved through now.
Things went along pretty simple like they were here the last time, they only now had to learn they're Ice and Fear powers this time, during they're fight with more statues, Spike was able to form his powers into a deadly whip, he could shoot his power out at the monsters which could knock them off cliffs easily, Spyro learned to freeze his enemy's again by shooting a large polar bomb from his mouth which exploded in a cold cloud. They then learned a couple new moves to help with their fighting, Spike learned to charge up his Fear into his fist like he could with the Earth powers, and he could unleash a strong punch which would do massive damage to his foes, and Spyro learned how to freeze his tail so he could swipe it around them to knock down more foes which could also slow them down, these powers were great to use, and they look forward to using them more in the future.
As Spike and Spyro kept making they're way to that temple again, Spike couldn't help but look at this place, and he could feel just how ancient it was, it felt older then Equestria's very existence , or even could be as old as the dragon race itself, it is fascinating with just how much more culture this world has that he could learn.
Spike and Spyro were soon finally able to make they're way to the temple again after some more platforming and learning more about they're elements, it wasn't too different then how it was to the last one, it felt easier to learn here then they were in the dojo with the guardians. And the two of them made they're way into the temple and wondered what they will see next.
" You know Spyro, after everything we've done so far, I have to wonder if I'll even be able to go home after this, look at where we are now, I know who my mother is and how I came to be.. and this world is in such a war torn state.. I don't know if I could even want to leave it.." Spike said with worry on what his fate will lead him too.
"It's your choice Spike, we always have one, I know your going through a rough time right now, but all of are too, we all are worried on what's to happen soon, it's best we all just keep going, no matter what." Spyro advised calmly which Spike could understand.
"Yeah.. just keep moving forward.." Spike repeated with hope as they walked into the large room again.
They felt chills as they entered the place, it wasn't just from the cold, it was from something else they could feel coming from the vision pool.
"Alright Chronicler, now what? What is it you want us to do?" Spyro asked while they looked into the pool to see anything.
"I feel like it's best we know what's about to happen so we can stop it." Spike asked looking in it as well.
"You both already know what is happening, a great evil is awakening. Something that will destroy both this world, and Equestria if it isn't stopped, but there is more that you both must understand.." Chronicler said as they could finally see something forming in the vision pool.
But what they saw made them afraid, they could see a dark mountain from their visions, it was a place of fear and sorrow, a place of pure darkness, someplace that no one would ever go to, unless they want to die.
"We've seen this place in our dreams, it scares us.." Spyro said with fear as they see every part of it in full detail.
"I've never felt so much darkness and evil come from any place I've seen.." Spike said scared as there was a massive light erupting from the peak.
"This is an evil place you two, it is called the Mountain of Malefor. Asylum to the wandering phantoms and lost spirits who were lost to darkness.. But to the spirits themselves and the black hearted.. it goes by another name.." Chronicler said as they see the mountain in all it's terror while a huge ape stomps to it.
"The Well of Souls!" The Ape King said with a malicious voice as they look over the place with evil looks, Spike felt his blood go cold the more they look at it, and he has a bad feeling that will be they're last place in this adventure, and that's when they could feel themselves finally beginning to wake up once more..
Author's Note
Hey guys thanks for reading this! I hope that this was good enough for the chapter, I'm gonna be putting the starting points of levels in one chapter which will be followed up with another dream sequence where Spike and Spyro unlock another power, but once that's all done, I'm gonna go through the places in full, I don't want the chapters to drag on for longer then they should, so I hope you don't mind that, I just hope you liked this and look forward to more!
