“Yep! We’re going on vacation to the beaches in Las Pegasus! And the kicker? I asked Celestia to give you some days off and she decided to turn it into a direct order! “Ah, I almost forgot that we didn’t have a trip last year. Eventually, Thunder gave up, probably being unable to go against a direct order from Celestia, but also because Snowy’s smile was getting more intimidating by the second, and it almost felt like the room itself was getting colder.
“Yes, dear. Let’s go to… Las Pegasus.” Thunder said, almost spitting out the city’s name, as he clearly wanted to be back to work already. Snowy simply smiled at him.
“Good choice.” The maternal pegasus said before looking at Midnight and Lightning. “Alright, kids! Finish eating so that you can pack up your things so that we can go to Las Pegasus as soon as we can!”

“Actually, I don’t think I can join on this trip, or at least immediately be part of it.” Lightning said, causing Snowy to blink at her.
“Why?” Snowy asked before realizing something and smiling at Lightning. “Oh, yes! You begin work today in Las Pegasus, don’t you?” Snowy asked, to which Lightning smiled.
“Yep! I do!”
“Then I guess what we’ll do is that we’ll all go together. You still pack your things in case you can join us later, I think you said you have to stay at work for a few days. You can split off when we get to Las Pegasus and we’ll make sure to notify the hotel staff that when you come in, they will give you a room and place it on our tab.” Snowy stated, to which Lightning stood up and hugged Snowy.
“Thank you, mom.”
“No problem dear,” Snowy said, before shooting a look at Thunder who was already getting concerned about how much the trip was going to cost. “And don’t you dare open your mouth, I know that you already have a fortune large enough to last this family two generations worth of spending,” Snowy said, which pretty much shut Thunder up and caused him to become somewhat annoyed as he sat on the table.

Midnight nodded before beginning to breathe slowly, his mind becoming more and more focused as he began to concentrate on the ball and nothing else. It didn’t take a second for Midnight’s assumptions to be proven correct though, as the stallion from the other side instantly jumped into the air before spiking the ball down with tremendous force. “Midnight! Set it up so that Pounding can send it across!” Tropical yelled. Midnight let out a sigh as he prepared to serve the ball as the other team began to ask them to begin the next round. His hands trembled before he struck the ball, and he winced as it appeared to be veering off course. It was only because one of the mares on the other side still chose to bounce it back that the ball didn’t fall out of bounds, to which Pounding and the other stallion on their team prepared to bounce it back.
“It’s just… this reminds me of when I played with my sister. She’d always win.” Midnight said as he watched Pounding set the ball before the other stallion jumped high into the air and bounced it over the net.
“Always?” Tropical asked.
“Always.” Midnight said before correcting himself. “Well, there were some moments that I’d win, but that’s because my sister was always figuring out newer, better moves, and she sometimes would fail. But I don’t really remember winning with my own strength, ya know?” The blue pegasus said before instinctively pushing his arms up as the ball came to him. The ball was set for Tropical to quickly bounce it back onto the other side.
“But you can play well! See how well you were able to set that up?” Tropical said. Midnight simply sighed.
“That was just a happy accident.” Midnight said, before looking as the captain of the other team managed to do a perfect spike, Pounding unable to reach the ball in time as it landed on the sand. “That though, wasn't.” Midnight said as the other team began to celebrate.
“Oh, now it's over Tropical! Time for you to get swept by our team!” The team captain yelled as he served the ball, which Pounding was unable to intercept this time, immediately scoring for the other team as they celebrated again. Tropical once again looked at Midnight.
“I understand your position, Midnight. Sometimes it’s very hard to grow when you constantly feel like you’re losing or that there are others better than you. But in order to begin, you have to try. Only then can you see where you are and how you can improve yourself. So please try, okay?” Tropical said. It was at that moment that the other team served again with barely any pause, and as Midnight looked at the ball’s trajectory he soon came to realize that it was going to hit Tropical in the head.
“Look out Tropical!” Midnight yelled as he pulled the sandy pegasus by the arm, causing her to twirl around him as she was pulled away from the ball’s trajectory. He quickly pulled his other arm back before striking upwards, and amazingly, he was able to hit the ball, causing it to go over the net and fall in front of one of the other players who wasn’t expecting Midnight to strike so quickly.

“So Midnight, are you ready to win against this guy?” Tropical said, to which Midnight responded with a happy grin.
“Yeah, let’s do this!” Midnight exclaimed
The game quickly began to progress as the ball was served again. With Midnight feeling much more motivated, time seemed to quickly pass as points were racked up on both teams. Each time the other team scored a point, Midnight, Tropical, Pounding, and the random stallion on their team would score as well. Sometimes they would miss the ball, but as Midnight continued playing he found himself moving a bit faster each time and his accuracy improving more and more. “Oh.” The mare said before pointing at the team captain that was on their team. “Well he’s our team volleyball captain for Las Pegasus College, so if you beated him I guess that makes you better than him!”
“Hey!” The captain yelled as he overheard their conversation. “If I had the whole team here then I don't think this would be a contest.” The stallion sharply said to the mare before looking at Midnight. “But still, you played very well Midnight.”
“Oh uhm, thanks.” Midnight said with a bit of his shyness again.
“Actually, you kind of look as old as the new freshmen that came a few weeks back for orientation.” The Captain said. “Are you going to join Las Pegasus College? We're always looking for some fresh blood for our team.”
This caused Midnight to widen his eyes, but knowing what college he was already going to go to, he couldn't help but let out a sigh.
“Sorry, I'm going to Canterlot College.” Midnight said, causing the volleyball player to also sigh.
“Well, that's a pity. And it's not like I can ask you to change colleges with applications over. It was at that moment that Tropical Desert cleared her voice before speaking out loud, bringing everyone’s attention to her.
“Well then! How about we all go surfing right now!” Tropical stated, causing her friends to nod. As they began to leave to gather their surfing gear, Midnight looked at Tropical with an embarrassed look.
“I don't know how to surf, and even if I did, I don’t have my own surfboard.” Midnight said, to which Tropical took some time to think before responding.
“You know how to swim?” Tropical asked, to which Midnight nodded. “Then I can teach you. We’ll both ride the same one.” She said as she grabbed her surfboard that lay near the net and led Midnight to the ocean.
Despite knowing that everything would be okay, he still couldn’t help but feel a bit anxious. Sure, he knew how to swim, but having his large wings waterlogged was one of the worst experiences he ever had. Thus, while he knew how to swim, he rarely did so.
He wondered if he should pray to Faust that they didn’t go overboard far from shore when they finally reached the shore. Tropical placed her board on the water, and sat on top of it, before looking back at Midnight.

As they got closer, Midnight could feel the waves underneath the board becoming larger and larger. It felt like they were in a small lifeboat, and as a rather large wave passed beneath them, Midnight sensed that it wouldn’t be long before they had to ride a wave soon.
“Ready, Midnight?” Tropical asked while smiling at him.
“Well as ready as I can be.” Midnight said as he could see a large wave forming.
“Don’t worry, as long as you follow my lead and your instincts, everything will go all right,” Tropical said as the wave began to carry them while growing more and more larger. “Hurry, it’s time to stand up!”
With that, Midnight quickly stood up with Tropical as the big wave fully formed and began to carry them. For a moment Midnight could feel himself losing his balance, but Tropical quickly grabbed his arm, helping him find his footing. After Tropical let him go, Midnight found himself being able to adjust and balance himself on his own, kind of reminding him of when he first learned how to adjust to the currents of the wind while flying.
“Alright! You’re getting the hang of it! Now just keep your balance and enjoy the ride!” Tropical exclaimed as the two surfed together on the wave.
Just as Tropical said, it was amazing as Midnight watched how the waves formed around them, creating a beautiful vortex around them as the sunlight reflected across the water, forming beautiful colors on the waves. It was something that Midnight hadn’t experienced before, and seeing and feeling all of this made him very happy.
Tropical smiled as she saw Midnight enjoying the sight. She was happy that she had found him on the beach. Knowing the different type of “fun” they’ll have later, she decided to give him a little “sneak peek".
