The Queen's Boyfriend
3 years later
Turns out that was by far from the last night Sombra would spend in her room. He would know because he was awakening from sleep with her laid out in his forelegs. She loved to sleep with her head on his neck and her legs to his sides. Sombra still had a room but he stopped sleeping in it well over a year ago. Selena still slept in her nursery but had graduated from a crib to a toddler bed. A new door had been installed on the front so she could go visit Pop Pop and Grammy whenever she wanted to. She had never learned to shift, unfortunately for her umbrum kin but they still loved her anyway. After retiring Samaar and Rabia doted on their little grandchild. Sombra and Cadence often being the disciplinary form for the grandbaby "who could do no wrong".
Sombra stirred as he awoke but noticed Cadence getting heavier. "Babe. It's morning and we have to get up." Cadence just grumbled and nuzzled closer to his chest. He gave her a light push as he attempted to roll over and failed, Cadence grumbling in protest. "Babe!" He laughed, amused by her behavior. She normally was ready to be queen and deal with her subjects.
"I don't want to get up yet." She squeezed him tighter and curled into a ball before laying her head back down. As much as Sombra would love to let her keeping using him as her own personal body pillow, he had a lot to do today. He had plans. Unfortunately he had to ruin her day before he could make it one of her best days ever. "I'm sorry but I really have to get up. You can continue sleeping if you want, I'll tell Imanai to tell the council you don't feel well today?" He lifted her pouting face towards his. She was not amused. "Alright I'm getting up." She grumbled. She stood up over top of him and stretched out. He decided to tease her a little to lighten her killjoyed mood. "I'd hate to say it Darling but are you trying to seduce me back into bed with you?" He raised an eyebrow before shooting her a wink. Cadence lightly smacked him with her leg with a chuckle before getting off him, flying down to the floor to get dressed. She now had a queen's attire to wear. Mostly fancy ribbons and her crown but nonetheless required for her status. Her mother made being queen look easy! Sombra shifted off the bed and stretched on the floor. He still rocked his fluffy mane, which he now flipped to one side. Cadence had also started flipping her mane to the side. Her headband didn't work very well with her new crown. She started looking for her leg ribbons but couldn't seem to find them. She turned to Sombra who wore his council pendant, a white jacket and small shoes to replace his large armored ones. If his plan today went alright he would be switching back to them soon enough anyway.
"My love, have you seen my ribbons?" She asked after she could not find them anywhere.
"In your vanity dear." He waved, not looking away from his mirror, his red eyeshadow being applied easily after all the years of practice. After they were both presentable they left their room and headed to the throne room. They would meet the other councilors there and head to the council room to go over the day's activities. It was mostly the same stuff everyday but again, Sombra had plans.
Once they arrived in the council room Sombra would have an "emergency" with Tamaar and urgently have to leave. The council knew about the "emergency" He and Cinch actually had a lot in common suprisingly. Imanai was their new assistant since Cinch had started training her replacement. She was a lovely little earth pony named Sugarcoat. She could be quite blunt like Cinch was though. The other two had started training their successors too. Sour Sweet, who was a relative of Sugarcoat and Lemon Zest. After Sugarcoat and Sour Sweet the pegasus representative wanted some fresh new ideas and picked the wild child from the new orphanage. They were three young fillies but would grow into their future roles one day.
Right on schedule Tamaar burst through the door with her umbrum problem that she needed only the umbrum representative for. Cadence seemed kinda bummed out being stuck there alone but Sombra needed to put the next phase of his plan into action. He blew her a kiss and followed Tamaar. Cadence needed to stay distracted until he could finished setting everything up. He met his parents with Tamaar under the castle.
"Selena, Dad go work on the gazebo and Mom your with me." Sombra started. "Tamaar go find Shining Armor and get him to keep Cadence distracted once she leaves the council room." Tamaar nodded and went to go find the newly appointed general. Sombra shifted into his old room and grabbed the small box he needed. He rarely ever went in there so it was the perfect place to hide it. He and his mom were prepping food for the picnic. A long time ago Sombra had noticed that Cadence's first sign of feelings was when they were laid out on a picnic blanket and he wanted to recreate that for his proposal. After prepping the basket he headed over to the gazebo Selena and his dad were working on.
"Almost done Uncle Sombra!" Selena cheered. It looked like his dad was doing most of the work but if Selena was his emotional support who was he to deny it? His dad shifted down and grabbed his shoulder. "Good luck my boy. Make that girl proud." He scooped Selena up and placed her on his back. "Me and this one here have a playdate with the council fillies." Sombra waved bye and sat down under the gazebo. If all went to plan Shining Armor would be bring Cadence by here any minute now. Sombra fluffed up his mane and double checked his eyeliner when the two came right on schedule. Shining Armor would make up an excuse to leave her and she would see the picnic. She gazed confused when he ran off but noticed Sombra under the gazebo.
"What is all this? I thought you were solving an umbrum dispute?" She scolded playfully. Sombra stood up and gazed lovingly into his girlfriend's eyes. "A secret date for my favorite princess who I absolutely adore and want to make up for ruining her morning." Cadence smiled and Sombra pulled her in for a kiss on the cheek. They shared a peaceful picnic cuddling under the gazebo eating crystal berry jam sandwiches. (Something Sombra had come to love to eat from Cadence's recommendation) Now it was Sombra's turn.
"Now I have another suprise for you but you have to turn around and no peeking!" Cadence stood up and turned around lightly tilting her head to the side.
"I said no peeking!" Sombra growled.
Cadence quickly turned her head back around and closed her eyes. Sombra pulled out the box, looked over to Cadence one more time, and got down on one knee.
"Okay you can turn around now." He assured her. Cadence turned around with here eyes still shut. "You can open your eyes too Babe."
"I'm just being wary, I don't want to ruin your suprise." She said before she opened her eyes. She stepped back in shock for a moment before squealing in happiness. It was a box that held a silver feather. Inscribed was a quote, "To our forever". He knew her answer before he asked based on her reaction. She as practically leaping for joy but trying to rein herself in so he could officially pop the question.
"My queen and beautiful girlfriend Cadence. Would you do me the honor of letting me be your king and you being my wife?"
Cadence nodded quickly and he set the box down before she could pounce. She showered him with kisses. When she was done celebrating he placed the feather in her wing and the matching ring on his horn. He gazed lovingly at his new fiancee before kissing her. Cadence lightly rubbed under his chin with her head as she nuzzled his neck.
