Still Dreaming
Story
Load Full StoryIf you had asked Rainbow Dash a couple of days ago if there was any possibility of her dating Twilight Sparkle, she would have called you an idiot. But here she is now, flying over Ponyville, over the moon about her newfound lover. Everything happened so fast. One minute Twilight had asked her to go to Whitetail Woods with her, and the next thing she knew, she was lying on a grassy hill, stargazing with her, sharing their deepest secrets, and enjoying each other’s company. Rainbow didn’t even notice throughout the night that she was pretty much wrapped under Twilight's hoof.
A smile graced Rainbow's face. She recalled the memory so vividly. Twilight had asked her to come to Whitetail Woods to help her with a science project. Apparently, Twilight needed help with stargazing of all things. Rainbow Dash was skeptical at first, wondering why Twilight would ask her of all ponies to help her with her studies, but she agreed regardless. She simply couldn't resist that beautiful smile of hers.
As the night came, Rainbow Dash set off from the mini puffy cloud she was lying on and soared through the streets of Ponyville, scanning the village trying to spot the lavender pony. It turned out to be a piece of cake; any purple pony holding a telescope had to be Twilight Sparkle, and she was spot on. Twilight had a hopeful expression on her face, which caused a wide smile to appear on Rainbow's face.
Rainbow Dash lowered herself to the ground, making sure not to make a sound, since, in many past cases, suddenly cannonballing towards her and all her pony friends at top speed resulted in chaos and mayhem. She wanted this time to be different, something special. As she gently touched the ground, Twilight heard the collision. She turned towards Rainbow Dash, her eyes filled with excitement.
Rainbow Dash shook her head, a large grin forming on her face. “Hey, Twilight!” she exclaimed, trotting over to the unicorn.
Twilight's excitement increased tenfold; she simply couldn't hold it any longer. “Hey, Rainbow Dash! You made it! I'm so happy you’re here!” Twilight said, dashing over to her friend.
A small blush formed on Rainbow's face. She hadn’t expected this much excitement coming from Twilight, but she was fine with it.
“Of course, I'm here, Twilight. I wouldn't miss it for the world."
Twilight continued to dash towards Rainbow. Rainbow expected her to stop in front of her, especially since she had a telescope strapped on her back, but to Rainbow's surprise, Twilight practically jumped onto her, hugging onto her for dear life, like a foal hugging their teddy bear during a thunderstorm. The warmth from Twilight's body smothered over the cyan pony figure, causing Rainbow's heart to flutter. She was taken aback by the physical affection.
"Whoa, whoa, Twilight, what's got you so excited? It's only just me," Rainbow said, ruffling Twilight's hair.
Twilight loosened her grip and pulled back. "I'm sorry, Rainbow. I guess I got a teeny bit too excited. I'm just surprised you're even here since you usually don't like this kind of stuff."
Rainbow chuckled, shaking her head with a playful smirk. "Yeah, that's true. Stargazing using a telescope to scope out space isn't really what I had planned for today, but I will make an exception for you, Twi. Besides, maybe gazing into the endless void that is space and spotting out those bright stars in the sky could be an awesome experience." She nudged Twilight with her wing, causing her to giggle.
"Really?" Twilight asked, her eyes filled with curiosity. "I thought you would find stargazing boring."
Rainbow shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Nah, it's not that bad, especially when I'm gazing into the stars with a friend," she said, winking at her. "Plus, I wouldn't mind learning a thing or two about stars anyway, especially since whenever I'm flying around Equestria at night, my eyes are always glued to them."
Twilight beamed, her smile radiant under the moonlight. "You got me there, Rainbow Dash. There's just something about stars that draws my eyes to them too. I can't believe how something so small could turn into something so beautiful, so large... and full of so much wonder." As Twilight finished her sentence, she found herself gazing at the stars. "Each star in the universe has its own story, has its own path it goes on. They're just like us, aren't they, Dash?"
Rainbow's eyes followed Twilight's gaze, finding herself staring at the purple sky too. The stars looked eerily small from a distance, little specks that filled the night sky. It made her second guess herself, wondering if Twilight was right about how large they truly were. But then she remembered, they were only in Equestria after all. Anything from where they were standing was going to look small; even the largest planet in the solar system wasn't visible from where they were standing. It reminded her how small she and Twilight were compared to the rest of the universe.
Rainbow shifted her gaze from the indigo sky back to her friend, and she was happy that she did. Twilight was starstruck, the moon's light reflecting in her eyes. Her mouth was agape, and she had a look on her face that screamed nostalgia. Rainbow couldn't lie to herself; she found the sight incredibly cute, something that she wouldn't admit to Twilight or anybody in a million years.
A cold gust of wind brushed against Rainbow's skin, causing her to shudder. She shook her head, realizing they were getting sidetracked, and remembered that the night didn't last forever, and everypony needs their beauty sleep.
Rainbow sighed and began to say Twilight's name, but she didn't respond. She pouted and said it again and again, but got no response. Taking matters into her own hooves, she gently placed a hoof on Twilight's back, which worked like a charm. Twilight's body practically rebooted, causing the pegasus to laugh.
“R-Rainbow Dash… what happened?” Twilight asked, causing the pegasus's laughter to die down.
“Oh, you should’ve seen it, Twilight. You spaced out, gazing at the awesome stars, and with a simple touch of my hoof, your body practically rebooted itself. You should’ve seen your expression, it was priceless!”
Twilight blushed, slightly embarrassed. “Oh, sorry about that, Dash. Sometimes, when I'm deeply invested in something, my mind and body become one with it, blocking out all sound around me. Kind of like when I’m reading.”
Rainbow Dash nodded, understanding how it felt to be deeply invested in something she enjoyed. If it weren't for Twilight, she would’ve never been introduced to Daring Do, a series of books that managed to brighten the worst of days for her.
Rainbow Dash chuckled, remembering the countless times she’d lost herself in the pages of Daring Do. “Don't worry, Twi, I get it. Remember those Daring Do books you got me hooked on? The same thing happens to me all the time.” She paused, her gaze softening. “So, is there anything else you need me for tonight, besides stargazing, or was there something specific?”
Twilight's blush deepened. “Well, actually, I brought you out here because there’s something amazing I wanted to show you. You see, there's a meteor shower happening tonight, and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity for us to enjoy the show… and talk.”
Rainbow’s curiosity was piqued. “Talk… talk about what?”
Twilight hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath. “Us, Rainbow Dash. I feel like there's a special connection between the two of us that is unmatched. We’ve been friends for a long time, and you’ve been a good friend, a bit too good… and I want to know if you feel the same way.”
Rainbow's heart skipped a beat. This was it, the moment she never thought would happen in a million years, but secretly hoped for. “T-Twilight… I,” Rainbow stammered, trying to find the right words to say. Her natural confident demeanour that she was known for slipped away, replaced by an uncharacteristic nervousness that flowed through her veins like a parasite.
Twilight, sensing Rainbow's nervousness, placed a hoof over her friend’s mouth. “You don't have to say anything, Rainbow Dash. Just join me at the meteor shower, and by the end of the night, we’ll both have our answers.”
Rainbow's eyes widened, she stood there, allowing Twilight’s words to flow into her mind. The nervousness she had felt trickled away like autumn leaves, her mind clouded by confusion as she wondered what Twilight meant by “we’ll both have our answers”.
Rainbow Dash swiped Twilight’s hoof away from her mouth, remembering the sole reason she was brought to her in the first place “What about the science project you needed help with? Wait a minute! Was the whole, ‘please Rainbow Dash, please help me with stargazing’ and setting up the telescope just a setup for this?”
Twilight nodded with a shit-eating grin. “I'm glad you finally caught on, Dashy,” Twilight said, turning towards Whitetail Woods. “Now, Rainbow Dash, my loyal servant, follow me to Whitetail Wood. There, we can watch the meteor shower together, and who knows, maybe, just maybe, if we have enough time, I might let you have a go with that telescope of mine, if you’re lucky.”
“Hey, I'm no servant! I'm Rainbow Dash, the fastest, strongest, and coolest pegasus—no, coolest pony in all of Equestria! Rainbow Dash serves no one, especially a bookworm.” Rainbow said, fluttering her wings and gently leaving the ground to follow her friend close behind.
“And another thing, Rainbow Dash doesn't need luck. Luck is just something ponies made up for centuries so they can make excuses for their shortcomings.”
“And you don't? Rainbow Dash, I've known you for a long time, and trust me, I’m not exaggerating when I say that you have an excuse for anything and everything whenever you mess up.”
“Hey! At least I don't blame my failures on luck, or anything superficial like ghosts!”
“Oh Rainbow, you’re impossible, but that's one of the many reasons why I like you.”
Rainbow felt warmth spread through her chest at Twilight's words. The two carried on with their chatter as they ventured deeper into Whitetail Woods. The night air was cool and crisp, sending shivers down their spines. The sound of trees dancing with the wind and animals chattering could be heard from a distance, creating a serene symphony of nature.
Finally, the duo located a part of the woods that was perfect for watching the meteor shower. It was a miniature grassy hill that was out in the open, allowing them to have a perfect view of the meteor shower without it being obstructed by the countless number of trees that surrounded the place.
Upon their arrival, Twilight set up the telescope while Rainbow spread out a blanket for the two of them to lay on.
As they settled down, Rainbow Dash couldn't help but notice the moonlight illuminating Twilight, making her look even more enchanting than usual. "So, what's the plan? Sit here and wait for the meteor shower?”
“Not exactly. The meteor shower doesn't start for another five minutes, so we’ve got plenty of time to chat before then.”
“Twi, not to be rude, but we’ve been talking for the last 30 minutes. I kinda want to get to the main event already,” Rainbow said, nudging Twilight.
Twilight chuckled. “Oh, trust me, Dash, the main event is going to be worth it. But you know what makes the main event better? The anticipation building for the event!”
"Oh really? Is that just an excuse so you can build up enough courage to sneak attack me with kisses while we're waiting?" Rainbow joked, earning a playful eye roll from the unicorn. Rainbow shifted her attention from Twilight to her telescope that was adjusted perfectly to catch the first streaks of the meteor shower.
Twilight, noticing Rainbow's diverted attention, smiled. "Fine, Rainbow, you can have a go with the telescope. I know that you're a closeted nerd anyway." twilight sarcastically said
"Hey, I'm no closeted nerd!" Rainbow exclaimed with so much force that it almost knocked the unicorn over. "I... I have my specific interests, alright."
Twilight chuckled, playfully nudging her Pegasus friend. "It's okay, Rainbow. Having specific interests doesn't make you a nerd, it makes you... you, and I wouldn't have it any other way."
Rainbow felt her cheeks blush, something that had been happening a lot around Twilight recently. She cleared her throat, regaining her composure. "Alright, alright, enough with the sappy stuff. Let's see what this bad boy can do."
Rainbow zipped towards the telescope, causing the blanket to shake in the process. She landed as close as she could to the telescope without knocking it over. Her body began to shake as she looked into the telescope, excitement flowing through her veins at the thought of discovering new stars and even planets in the sky.
But she encountered a problem. The telescope was zoomed out to the max, making it hard to see anything. Everything looked like specks of dust from a distance. Rainbow felt a great sense of annoyance wash over her as she tried for what felt like minutes to re-zoom the scope but was unable to figure it out. Just as frustration was about to take over, Twilight's laughter was heard in the distance, calming her down.
"Here, let me help you," Twilight said, stepping closer to Rainbow. She used her magic to readjust the telescope. Rainbow watched with amazement at Twilight's display of magic. A few moments later, Twilight gave Rainbow the go ahead. Rainbow looked into the telescope and the stars started showing up, twinkling in the night sky.
"Wow, that's amazing, Twi!" Rainbow exclaimed, peering through the lenses.
Twilight nodded, satisfaction plastered all over her face. "Exactly, now let me show you something." She pointed her hoof to the sky. "There's Orion, which is a constellation."
"Um, Twi, what’s a constellation? I don't speak bookworm language."
"Oops, sorry, let me start over. Constellations are groups of stars that are close together. These stars are in odd formations, and if you look close enough, they're shaped in a way that they look like... ponies, or shapes. Tell me, Rainbow, what does Orion look like to you?"
Rainbow pondered for a moment "It looks like one of my bad drawings when I was a foal."
"Carry on."
"Umm, it looks like some pony with a shield."
"You're getting closer."
"The pony looks like she's holding a sword and is about to charge at some pony."
Twilight smiled warmly. "Now you're getting it! Orion is often depicted as a warrior or hunter in many cultures. That's why he's called the Orion Hunter. It's fascinating, isn't it? How even stars can tell their own stories by merely just existing."
Rainbow nodded and looked back into the telescope. "Wow, I never thought about it that way, Twi. That's pretty cool, actually."
"Yeah, it's simply beautiful, isn't it? There are many constellations in the night sky, and in the solar system, the stars inside those constellations are like mini families in a way, which I find adorable."
rainbow raised a brow. "Adorable? I'm not sure about that, Twi. Imagine being forced to spend the rest of you're life with the same ponies, in the same place, for the rest of time, without having some peace and quiet, I think I would go clinically insane."
Twilight lightly punched Rainbow. "Rainbow, that's silly. They're only stars; they can't speak."
"Yeah, Twi, I know. I wasn't born yesterday, but it's food for thought, isn't it?"
"I guess," Twilight replied, lightly kicking a nearby pebble. "There was this metaphor that I used to tell myself whenever I was feeling down, which relates to stars." twilight said in a serious tone
"Oh really?" rainbow asked intrigued "Then tell me, Twi."
"Okay" twilight paused "Rainbow Dash. Sometimes, when I feel insecure about myself, or the future, or really anything that relates to my dreams, I usually come here when it's dark, quiet, and when I'm alone. I sit right here, with the same telescope you're using right now, and gaze into the sky."
Rainbow continued to listen to her friend in silence, her attention fixed on Twilight as she shared her personal thoughts.
"I used to tell myself that dreams are like stars, Rainbow Dash. They are very far away, and from a pony’s perspective, they seem out of reach at first. But if I don't let my doubts, fears, or anything similar consume me, it makes me realise that those tiny little stars in the distance aren't that far away. They can easily be reached; the only thing holding me back from reaching them is myself."
Rainbow felt a wave of admiration as Twilight shared her thoughts. Her strong and beautiful description struck a chord in Rainbow's heart. She felt honoured to witness this side of her friend, a side that was rarely on display.
"Wow, Twilight... I—" Rainbow paused, her heart still recovering from Twilight's words. "I simply don't know what to say. I know this is going to come off as a bit nerdy, but that was beautiful and awesome! Really, I never knew you thought of stars and dreams in that way."
"Yeah, I've kept it to myself for a long time," Twilight admitted. "I kept it to myself because I felt like it would lose all meaning if I shared it, and how ponies wouldn't understand."
"Trust me, Twilight, I understand. I think it makes perfect sense. Dreams are far away, but it doesn't mean they're impossible to reach."
"Thanks, Rainbow. That means a lot," Twilight said softly.
The next couple of minutes were accompanied by a comfortable silence. Rainbow and Twilight lay on the blanket next to each other, watching the stars above. The coldness of the night continued, and the wind blew against their skin.
The coldness was starting to get to Twilight. Her body was shivering, desperately wanting some form of warmth to grace her skin. She sat up and looked over to Rainbow, who was in a world of her own. Twilight let out a satisfied sigh, a grin forming shortly afterward, knowing what she was going to do next.
She scooted over to Rainbow, wrapping her hoof around her and pulling her closer for warmth. Rainbow blinked in surprise, her heart skipping a beat from Twilight's snuggling.
"What are you doing, Twi?" she asked, trying to sound confident.
"It's getting cold, and I thought it would be a good idea if we kept each other warm."
"Umm, yeah, sure, that's fine by me." Rainbow wrapped her wing around Twilight, pulling her closer.
The duo continued to watch the night in comfortable silence, their bodies as close to each other as they could be, enjoying the moment. Rainbow's body was so warm that she felt like she was melting. It was an odd feeling for her, but if it meant she could spend more time with Twilight, then so be it.
The silence was broken as a white streak of light flew across the sky. Rainbow and Twilight gasped in unison as the meteor streaked across the night sky, leaving a trail of light that lingered in air
"Wow, Twi, did you see that? That was awesome!" Rainbow exclaimed.
Twilight nodded, her eyes filled with wonder. "Of course it was beautiful, Dashy, but there's more to come. There's plenty of time before this meteor shower ends."
Rainbow’s heart pounded with anticipation. "I can't wait to see more. This is going to be awesome!"
The ponies continued to lay on the blanket, nestled with one another. The coldness that was affecting Twilight slowly became an afterthought as she continued to stare at the sky. All her worries disappeared in this once-in-a-lifetime moment with her friend. The sky began to encapsulated with meteors, each meteor bringing gasps of excitement and awe.
As the meteor shower continued, Twilight turned over to Rainbow Dash. The Pegasus' face was lit up with pleasure, her magenta eyes reflecting the falling stars. Twilight felt her heart soar with affection. This was the perfect moment, the perfect night to confess.
"Rainbow Dash," Twilight began softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Rainbow turned her head to Twilight, her expression softening. "Yeah, Twi, what's up?"
Twilight hesitated for a moment, but took a deep breath, trying to calm her growing nerves. "Rainbow Dash, I... I brought you here not just because of the meteor shower or to go stargazing. I brought you out here because I wanted to spend this special night with you. Rainbow Dash, I... I have feelings for you, more than friendship. I... I love you." Twilight hung her head low, fearing that Rainbow wouldn't reciprocate her feelings.
Rainbow's heart beat faster, feeling like it was practically trying to jump out of her body as she sat there speechless. Throughout the night, Rainbow had noticed the little signs that pointed to Twilight having feelings for her; however, she thought that maybe she was overthinking. She knew she and Twilight had a special kind of friendship.
Rainbow had noticed how much happier Twilight was around her. She would laugh, smile, and overall just be a much happier pony in general. It made Rainbow's heart flutter, realizing how important she was to Twilight. If it weren't for Twi, she would never have gotten into Daring Do, and she hated to admit it, into stargazing and space in general too.
Rainbow's mind raced as she processed Twilight's confession. The realization hit her like a lightning bolt, causing her heart to pump even faster. She felt a rush of emotions she had never felt before. She looked over to Twilight, her eyes widened and shimmering with a mix of surprise, excitement, and something else she couldn't quite name.
"Twi, I—" Rainbow began, her voice faltering. She took a deep breath, trying to recompose her nerves. "I had no idea you felt that way. I mean, I've always thought you were smart, amazing, and simply downright beautiful. And tonight, well, it's been perfect."
Twilight lifted her head, her gaze meeting Rainbow's with a mixture of hope and fear. "Thanks, Rainbow. Tonight has been amazing." She paused. "But I don't want you to force yourself to reciprocate my feelings out of fear of making me upset." Twilight said, a singular tear graced her cheek" I feel selfish; I feel like I've ruined our friendship."
Rainbow felt a wave of affection for the lavender unicorn. She gently cupped Twilight's face with her hoof. "Twilight, you're not selfish for admitting your feelings to me. You could never ruin our friendship. To be honest, I've been feeling strange around you for a while now, but I haven't been able to put my hoof on it until tonight."
Twilight wiped the tear of her face. "R-Really? W-what feelings have you been feeling around me recently?"
"Nervousness, embarrassment and happiness. For whatever reason, whenever I'm around you, I feel like there are a bunch of butterflies in my stomach fluttering around. At first, I thought it was because of the effects of air sickness since you know me, I'm always soaring in the skies." Rainbow joked, causing Twilight to chuckle, her fear of rejection slowly fading away. Twilight nodded, allowing the Pegasus to continue. "But then I realized if it was air sickness, then I wouldn't be feeling this way when I'm on the ground. I mean, I never felt this way around other mares before, just you, Twi. Tonight made me realize that those butterflies in my stomach are because I have feelings for you."
Twilight raised her brows "Rainbow, do you really mean it?"
Rainbow nodded "Of course, Twi. You've always been there for me, whether it is just helping me with reading, or simply just hanging out or anything like that. You're awesome; that's what I'm trying to say. You're special to me, Twi, and I... love you too."
Tears began to form in Twilight's eyes, not from sadness but from overwhelming happiness. She threw herself onto Rainbow Dash, hugging her in a tight embrace. "Oh, Rainbow Dash, you have no idea how happy this makes me!"
Rainbow reciprocated the hug, nuzzling against Twilight's body. She felt a sense of contentment wash over her. Those odd feelings that had been clouding her mind were put to rest. She could finally relax with her marefriend by her side. "So what now, Twi?"
"We enjoy the rest of the meteor shower, together as a couple, and see where this journey takes us, one step at a time."
"That sounds perfectly fine to me."
With hoof in hoof, the couple watched the marvellous meteor shower carry on. The sight was simply out of this world; they couldn't believe they were experiencing something so magical, something so perfect. It was like a dream come true for Twilight, experiencing the night magical with the pony she loves the most by her side. It was like she was on cloud nine; everything was just perfect.
After a while, the meteor shower slowly dwindled down. The last streak of light crossed the sky, signaling to the two ponies that the show was over, leaving the night sky with nothing but stars.
Rainbow Dash sat up with a pondering expression. "You remember when you said that stars are just like dreams, and sometimes they can be out of reach?"
"Of course I do. What's on your mind?"
"Well, don't you find it ironic that one of those stars was within your reach all this time and is sitting right next to you?"
Twilight's eyes widened at Rainbow's question, shocked by the realization from Rainbow's words. She chuckled, hating how right Rainbow was. "Oh, come here, you goofball!" Twilight said, pulling Rainbow into a kiss.
Rainbow was caught off guard, surprised by the kiss, she closed her eyes and melted into the embrace, loving every second of it. Twilight's kiss was soft, tender, and sent a flurry of emotions through her body. She could get used to this—the kissing, the stargazing, and the many other adventures Twilight had in store for her. Even if it meant sacrificing some of her free time, it didn't matter, because she was spending time with the most beautiful and amazing pony in the world, Twilight Sparkle. And she wouldn't have it any other way.
