Author's Note

Okay... I am a huge fan of Patchwork Poltergiest's writing. She's one of my favorite authors in the fandom. I totally get the idea of being upset that a character isn't written beyond stereotypes. But Spoiled Rich remains one of the characters I've always had problems with, just in general. Why?

Because reality always hits, and it hits hard. I had a mother like her (admittedly, one that was worse). I know what they're like. I know how they operate. I've poured years into therapy and a lot of money into books about mothers like the one I had. In fact, the original version of this piece isn't even a pony poem at all. It's a poem about my own mother that I wrote in one of my college notebooks for a creative writing class, and I was made so nauseous by it that I typed it up and refused to turn it in. The section in italics is composed of things that I was told from my earliest years up until my 20s (I'm low contact with my mom, she hasn't gotten better, people that are genuinely evil like her don't get better). That was back in 2020. Now, I've taken it and changed it so that some verses are specific to Diamond Tiara's situation. For example, I'm not a lesbian. I'm a dude. The original poem contains commentary about misandry that isn't really prominent here.

So, you're probably thinking that as a pony version of the poem, this is softer and lighter. Well, you thought wrong. Aside from things that were changed to be specific to Diamond Tiara's situation (such as the fact that she is an only child), and thus specific to her gender, I was told basically everything in the italics section verbatim. My mother wasn't even the only one who told me those things. One or two small sections were altered to convey the setting of Equestria, but they're still grounded in my own experiences.

For example, I struggled to understand that I was being abused for years because all the therapists I had prior to turning 19, social workers, school counselors, and other professionals told me I wasn't being abused. When I was institutionalized under dubious circumstances as a really young child and had incorrect, premature diagnoses forced on me because my mother talked people into inaccurate diagnoses, I was mistreated and abused further, and no one considered even checking if she may have been an abusive parent. In fact, I was reported back to my mother so that I could face punishment. When I struggled to find resources for trauma and domestic abuse survivors, I found that most of them framed men as inherently guaranteed to be the abusers while having the sensibility to either leave references to the victim neutral or to fall into a narrative of "men are abusers, women are victims" which was at odds with my reality of a male survivor.
