"Better to have loved and losted then never to have loved at all" Spike always felt that it didn't apply to him. But after falling in love with Rarity, he understood. He thought he had a chance with her, but unfortunately, life didn't go that way.
Turns out, she had a crush on timberhoof. It admittedly crushed his heart, but still decided to be there for her...even if it meant that he'd help her with the stallion of her dreams.
However, it turned out that tenderhoof didn't like her like that and was in love with Applejack. A part of him thought that this was his chance to be her rebound...but his pride didn't let him, so he kept silent.
However, he wanted to at least tell her to clear his mind and try to move on. As he was laying in his basket bed, he cried quietly, trying not to wake Twilight, as the realization hit him. He had no chance with her in the first place.
He wanted to know what Rarity thought of him. If he was a friend, he would be ok with it. As long as he was in her life, that's all he would ask. So he came up with a plan to find out.
While Twilight was away to meet with princess Celestia for a meeting, Spike decided to make a potion that would help the whoever drank it to reveal to themselves what they mean to a pony, or in this case, A certain dragon. Since the spell requires a drop of blood of the one who made it to work.
Spike had made a lot of the potion, in the off chance that it was needed more. He put the rest of the potion in soda bottles since they ran out of viles. He had put them in the refrigerator and when to drop of the one he had in hand to Rarity with a note. He didn't want to be there if Rarity got mad at him for something.
Twilight had just returned from cantrlot from royal business and was tired. She walked into the library, hoping that Spike had made dinner. "Spike! Are you here?"
She looked around and saw that he wasn't around. "I guess he stepped out huh?" She walked to the kitchen table and put her saddle bag on the table and looked around. "Maybe he when to go visit Rarity?"
Twilight looked at a picture of her and Spike that was taken back when they lived in cantrlot. The two of them were as close as two friends could be. However, she recently felt like she and Spike have grown more...distance? "Oh Spike...have we...grown a part since cantrlot?"
She remembered all the good time she had with him. But for some reason, she felt like there was something she forgot. Something important to her.
She then decided to get something from the fridge to drink to help her jog her memory. Just has she grabbed a drink, a knock was heard by the front door. "Oh? Maybe Spike's back?" It turned out to be Rainbow dash. "Hiya Twi."
Twilight admitted that she was let down but was still happy to see Rainbow dash all the same. "Oh, hey dash. What can I do you for?"
Rainbow dash then decided to ask "Well, I was gonna ask Spike if he wanted to help me with training today. Is he here?"
Twilight was surprised that Rainbow dash wanted Spike's help with training. Since when did she needed help with training? "Umm, I'm afraid Spike isn't here right now. But I'll let him know and send him on your way."
To Twilight, Rainbow dash seemed... saddened by the news? She then said with a sad tone "N-no. It's...ok. I'm just gonna have a light workout and call it a day. Oh right, I almost forgot. You have any drinks you can spare?"
Twilight then when to the kitchen and found six bottles of soda. She grabbed five of them and left one for herself and gave them to Rainbow dash in a saddle bag. "Not sure if this'll be enough, but I hope you enjoy them."
Rainbow dash blinked as she saw all the drinks she had in hoof. "Wow...that's a lot of drinks. Thanks Twi, I'll put them to good use."
Rainbow dash waved at Twilight as she magically grabbed her drink, a apple, and a photo album and looked through the pictures in them.
As she looked at the pictures, she then drank the potion. She then started to remember a certain memory they had from their younger days. They were having a pretend wedding and made vows to each other. Like how they had read about In Their books.
She also remembered something that he had given her to represent a wedding ring. She when up to her room and dug around her private box till she found what she was looking for. It was a blue star-shaped gem called a sapphire star. A rare gem that can only be found in the cantrlot mines on the lower mountain levels of cantelot.
She then remembered the vows they had made that day. "I, Twilight sparkle, promise to never leave your side as your wife!"
Young Spike then said "And I promise to make you the happiest mare ever as your husband!" They never managed to seal their vows with a proper kiss, but they did to a kiss on the cheek for they both of them.
She then cried tears as she relived the memories of their childhood , as well as her forgotten feelings for Spike. "...I'm in love with Spike."
She then knew what to do and when to the local jewelers and purchased a necklace with a star shaped holder in the middle and said "If Rarity can show off her precious fire ruby, then I can do the same with my sapphire star."
She then got to work on her new sapphire star necklace. And on how to rekindle the closeness she and Spike had...till she can confess her feelings to him.
Meanwhile
Rainbow dash was walking back to her workout spot sad and heavy hoofed. She was hoping Spike would be there so they could hang out together.
Recently she's been wanting to hang out with him alot more in the past few months, since she learned that Spike temporary filled in for her during Discords second attack, but never understood why. It was like her subconscious was making her do what she desired to do.
Rainbow dash was walking through town, deep in her thoughts, when she bumped into a certain tanned earth pony who said "Whoa now partner, didn't think one could their head in the clouds from the ground, you know?"
Rainbow dash looked in front of her and saw Applejack in front of her. She was with a empty cart of apples after a successful day of selling apple in the market. Rainbow dash then shook her head and said "Sorry about that, I got distracted. What are you up to A.J? Trying not to run into Tenderhoof again?"
Applejack sighed as she remembered him amd said "You don't have to worry about him. I had to be straight with him and said that, were two different ponys. I just wasn't into him." She sighed as she then said "What's on your mind dash? Your usually more focused then that while flying."
Rainbow dash sighed as well, knowing that Applejack was right about that, and said "Well, I WAS on my way to workout, and I wanted to ask Spike to come along with me. But, he wasn't at the library when I got there."
Applejack blinked at Rainbow dash and asked "You...wanted to ask Spike...to work out with you?"
Rainbow dash then shook her head and said "I just wanted some company, and just thought that he would want a break from working, why?"
Applejack blinked in confusion and said "But...you two NEVER hang out together. Even with all of us together, you usually fly to one of us or do your own thing. You even made fun of him for being small for a fearsome dragon!"
Rainbow dash gulped as she heard that, knowing the farm pony was right about that. But she then said "Well, didn't you exactly accept him either when you saved his life and he wanted to help you to repay his debt to you."
Applejack then felt a big ping of guilt in her heart, knowing that Rainbow dash was right. Even after helping with her chores, making great pies, and giving her such great back massage, she still wasn't comfortable with him doing all of this for her.
She felt bad for trying to push him away and has tried to invite him over again to show her appreciation. But, Spike always had been busy. Especially since Twilight was made a princess and being her number one assistant, it made him even more busier then before.
Rainbow dash then felt bad bringing it up and said "Here, I had gotten some soda from Twilight's place. It's kinda too much for me to carry back to my place, want one as a apology?"
Applejack nodded, grabbed the bottle, and put it in her Saddle bag saying "Mighty nice of you Rainbow dash. Welp, gotta get back home now. Take care now."
The two waved as they parted ways. As Rainbow dash decided to go relax at her place today and save her workout for another time. As she was walking to where her Cloudominium was at, she found Fluttershy talking to Pinkie pie.
They both spotted Rainbow dash as Pinkie said "HI Dashie, What's up?!" Fluttershy also walked up and said more calmly "Hello Dashie. What brings you here?"
Rainbow dash smiled weakly as she said "I was just gonna head back home for the day. I got some extra soda, you girls want one?"
Pinkie nodded and grabbed it with her mane surprisingly. And Fluttershy grabbed her's with her wing and put it in her bag. She then said "Thanks for the soda Rainbow dash."
Rainbow nodded as she made her way back home to her Cloudominium. When she got home, she snuggle her pet turtle Tank, fed him, and let him fly around the Cloudominium for a bit.
After that quality time with Tank, Rainbow dash retired to her room and began to drink the soda she got earlier. She then began to think after drinking the soda and thought. "You know, Twilight makes a point. Why HAVE I been wanting to be with Spike more lately?"
Rainbow began to recall some memories about him covering for her while she was under Discord's influence and the whole mystery cure incident. But those don't seem to be it. She then had a sore pain on her wing, and the thought came rushing back.
*Flashback*
During one of her practice sessions for her flying, Rainbow dash was trying to improve on her sonic rainboom to impress the wonder bolts. She asked Spike for a favor and clock her time with the stopwatch, and Spike agreed to help.
After practice however, she started to feel weak as Rainbow almost fainted on the spot. Luckily, Spike caught her and took her back home with the hot air balloon.
Once in her Cloudominium, Spike lied her down in bed and brought her some water. Rainbow was thankful for that and said that she can handle the rest.
Spike shock his head however, and replied "It's no problem Rainbow. You overwhelmed yourself in training. Just relax,rest up, and I can handle your chores for you while I'm here."
Rainbow dash blushed as she tried to say "W-Wait Spike! You don't have to do that. I-I can-"
"Too late!" Spike then ran off to tackle Rainbow's chores for her, making her blush even more as a result.
*End of Flashback*
"Oh Spike..." Rainbow dash mumbled to herself as she blushed from the memories, realizing what had happened. "I don't know how you did it, but...I think I've fallen in love with you."

1 Hour Earlier
Rarity was in her boutique in cantelot, working on a new order for one of the nobles that had ordered from her. However, she was alone in the boutique this time around as Sassy saddles was away for the day.
Rarity sighed as she worked on the dress, realizing that it wasn't coming as she Invisioned. She was missing something...or rather, some drake.
Rarity then looked at one of the emeralds she had out as it reminded her of a certain dragon's emerald eyes. '*Sigh* Oh, face it Rarity. You can't focus on work because your too worried about Spike. Not that I can blame myself for being so worried. Ever since the Tenderhoof situation, Spikey-wikey has been rather distant from you.'
Rarity looked at the dress and made a choice. 'Maybe I need a change in scenery. I'll head back to Carousel boutique and see if I can get more inspiration. And if I just so happen to see Spikey-wikey in town, I can invite him to the boutique for tea and hopefully we can be close again.'
Rarity then sealed the dress in a travel bag and wrote Sassy a note, telling her that she'll be back next week, packed her sattlebag, closed to boutique for the day, and made her way back to ponyville.
When she arrived back home, she noticed a bottle that was at the front door and inspected it. It was a bottle of grape soda. However, nopony knew that it was secretly her favorite drink. Well, all except for one precious dragon of hers.
'Oh Spike. This was so sweet of you.' She then looked both ways and kissed the bottle by the neck as she unlocked the door and entered the boutique.
She then hung the dress on the design manicen, and headed to her inspiration room (her bedroom) to think of ideas for the dress. However, any idea that entered her mind was not good enough for her. She then looked at that she placed on the dresser, as her mind replayed to a certain moment she regretted doing.
Flashback
"Oh Spike! How can you know what's it like to be obsessed with somepony, only to f-find out their obsessed with s-somepony else!?"
End of Flashback
Rarity then put both her hoofs on her mouth as tears filled her eyes as she came to a realization. "H-He DID know, didn't he...b-but for how long?"
Rarity looked at the bottle she think Spike brought and spotted one of Spike's scales on it, and had a idea. She putted it put with her magic and said "Oh Spikey-wikey, this may be a invasion of your thoughts, but I have to know."
Rarity then opened her closet and brought out some chemicals she had around. She also had a spell book she borrowed from Twilight awhile back, and looked for a certain spell she found some time back.
While Rarity wasn't as talented in magic as Twilight, she HAS learned a few things from Spike's visits. After mixing some of the chemicals, she put the scale in and then began to chant a spell. "To fix the tear, my friendship must mend, see the past, from way back then, view the memories, of my dear friend."
Rarity then fired the spell on the pot and the potion glowed green. The spell worked as she looked for a vile to put it in. Rarity then spotted the bottle that she thinks Spike gave her and said "Oh,Spike. I know you meant well, but I'm gonna have to throw out the soda you bought me."
She then emptied the bottle, rinsed it off, and poured her potion inside to drink it. She gulped as she looked at the potion and said, "My apologies Spike. I know ones memories are private, but I MUST know if you DO have true feelings for me."
Rarity then drank the potion, and memories from Spike's past came to light. She saw memories of Spike's time in Cantrlot. Especially when living Cantrlot castle with Blueblood, and how terrible he was treated. Luckily, Celestia stopped it some time ago.
Another memory was from the grand galloping gala, from before she met Blueblood herself. Spike had a truly miserable time then. She promised herself that she'll give him a better experience next time.
Another memory was from Cadence's wedding. Where she basically ignored him to be the wedding designer. That day wasn't so good for any of them.
The next one was before his birthday. Where he said "This fire ruby is my birthday present for myself! I've been aging this beauty for mouths!"
'Mouths?! Oh, and I basically guilt tripped him into giving it to me! Oh no, what have I done?!' Rarity thought as the last memory came into view. And this was the worse one yet.
Her memory self then said "Oh Spike! How can you know what's it like to be obsessed with somepony, only to f-find out their obsessed with s-somepony else!?"
Rarity then braced herself for the thoughts Spike had as he thought, "Of course I know. I've tried for so long to get you to notice me. To be honest with myself, I think I'm losing hope she even wants me around. I don't think she sees me as a friend.'
As the memory faded and the spell weared off, Rarity was in tears and her heart into pieces. She laid on her bed, crying and balling her eyes out as she said "Oh what have I done?! Poor Spikey-wikey! This is the WORSE! POSSIBLE! THING! I've ever done to him! THE WORSE!!!"
As Rarity cried in her pillow, she saw the Fire ruby hanging on the drawer as she said "Don't worry Spike. I'm done playing with your heart. I-I know what MY heart wants...and..."
Rarity used her magic to grab the necklace and put it on her neck. With mascara ruined and a fire in her eyes, she touched the fire ruby and said "...It's you Spike. I'll make up for being a bad friend to you and fix our friendship. And...I'll be yours. I have your heart and...you have mine now."
Rarity then walked to her work table to work on a way to help them be closer. 'Gem hunting was something he liked to do with me. So, next time, we'll dig up gems for him. He deserved it, doesn't he? For all the work he did for us?'
She can also wear the fire ruby more to show that he was hers and she was his. "...I vow this to you, Spike... I will NEVER hurt your heart again. I promise."
