In a time without the Mane Six uniting, and Spike the Dragon existing, Equestria was at war! After a thousand years, the Crystal Empire, and with it King Sombra, had returned! For months now, the "Crystal War" raged on, as Princess Celestia lead her forces to withstand the onslaught of the mind-controlled hordes!

The war couldn't have come at a worse time... Equestria had still been recovering from two other major crises! First, the return of Nightmare Moon after a millenium on the moon, and the temporary disappearance of Princess Celestia! And when she had managed to return, she had to go all out to banish her wayward sister again, to save her ponies...

Not long after, during a grand wedding in Canterlot, Queen Chrysalis and her changelings attacked! Again, they barely managed to beat them back, and Celestia's niece was rescued from the abandoned mines below Canterlot just in the nick of time before a lack of food and water did her in...

And then, just as Equestria thought it could rest for a while, the Crystal Empire, and with it, its despotic ruler, returned. And not long after, as Celestia and her advisors were still working out how to act next, the invasion began...

As of now, the army units under the leadership of Celestia's most trusted lieutenants held their ground, and even managed to push the attackers back at times. The princess herself meanwhile lead the main army, facing down King Sombra personally.

Unfortunately for Celestia, one of her most able officers was displeased with her current position... She was a highly skilled with magic, an able organizer, one of the most intelligent ponies in Equestria... and had things played out a little different many years ago, she might now be the princess' private pupil.

Since the day she had failed to join Celestia's kindergarten, Twilight Sparkle had felt that something was off, wrong, and that she was far below where she should be, in abilities, in tutorship... She had made something out of herself, but now that her brother, and sister-in-law, were leading armies, while she was serving directly under Celestia...

But it was gnawing on her, that feeling that something in her life wasn't right. That the position she was in was not right! That she should have made more of herself, which sounded strange considering that she was the princess' Chief-of-Staff... And to the detriment of Equestria, somebody knew how to exploit these feelings...

A not-so-well written interpretation of how the Crystal War timeline might've played out.
