The date!
It’d been years since Spike was still a kid, since he was treated as a child by Twilight and her friends; by now, he’d grown into a full adult, but still, he lived with the alicorn - the two were brother and sister, inseparable, and with Twilight’s princess duties, she could always use the help of such a trusted friend.
Though, sometimes, Spike needed her help too.
“D-do you think I should wear anything?” Spike said, staring at himself nervously in the mirror, running his claws through the scales on top of his head. “Maybe a tie or something?”
“You look fine as you are, Spike,” Twilight reassured him, patting him on the shoulder. “You’re already colorful enough without any accessories, and your scales look great - you should just let them show as they are. Your date will appreciate that a lot more than if you try to muddle it up with something unnecessary.”
“Well… it’s more like my dates,” Spike said, though not with any shame, as he continued to examine his reflection.
“Dates? Did you book multiple in the same day? That’s not good etiquette, Spike…” Twilight responded, concerned.
“No, no, it’s with two ponies at once!”
“That’s significantly worse.”
“It’s not like that - they asked me to go on a date with them together. They’re already in a relationship. I don’t really understand it, but I like both of them, so I agreed to it.”
“Ohh, I see! Alright then, you should get going - if you wait any longer, you’ll be late. Tell me all about it when you get back, ok?”
“For sure! Bye, Twilight!”
Spike left the castle in Ponyville, and headed for the date spot…
…Spike took a table at the Ponyville Café, right outside, near the front of the little building. He’d made it just in time, though he didn’t see his partners for the day right away; just as he was starting to get concerned he’d mixed something up, he saw two ponies quickly approaching in the distance.
“Spike, hi! Sorry we’re late!” Sparkler Hooves quickly said; she was a unicorn pony with a pinkish-purple mane, and three diamonds for her cutie mark. “I, um, I was…”
“Hi Spike!” Another greeting came from Sunshower Raindrops as she approached the table, right behind Sparkler; Raindrops was a pegasus with a pastel yellow mane and mint hair, her cutie mark resembling her namesake - three drops of rain. She was a bit more composed and less nervous than Sparkler. “Yeah, sorry about taking so long—Sparkler wanted to impress you, so she was spending all morning looking at the mirror, trying to choose an accessory. I told her she looked perfect as she was, but—”
“Raindrops, stop, you’re embarrassing me!” Sparkler said, chuckling. “I just wanted to wear something a little special for this… what do you think?” She turned her head and showed Spike a pastel purple bow tied into her hair with a small, sparkling diamond at its center.
“Wow, it looks great on you!!” Spike said, holding back his hunger at the look of such a pretty gem. “I think you made a good choice, I love it!”
Sparkler blushed and giggled a bit at his compliments, rubbing her hooves together as she took a seat. “Thank you, Spike! You look great today too!”
“Thanks! I actually spent all morning in front of the mirror, just like you did… though Twilight said I should just come as I am, so I decided to take her advice.”
“I think that was a good choice,” Raindrops said, now also taking a seat. “We like you just as you are.”
This time, Spike got a bit bashful, scratching the back of his head and smiling, a light blush on his cheeks. “T-thank you,” he said, stuttering.
“Don’t be nervous,” Raindrops replied, putting an elbow on the table and placing her chin into her hoof. “Or, at least, don’t worry if you are nervous… we are, too. It’s our first time trying to expand our relationship.”
“Actually, I wanted to ask about that. What, um, what do you want out of this?” he questioned, struggling to come up with the right words. “Like… I’ve gone on dates before, and I’ve been asked out before, but never by two ponies at once. I’m not sure I understand completely.”
Sparkler quickly offered, “Ah, I can explain! Raindrops and me are polyamorous, which means we can date multiple ponies at once, and sometimes, we can even both date the same pony at once. Or, um, not just ponies, but anyone, really!”
Raindrops nodded, and added, “We both like you a lot, Spike, so we wanted to go on a date with you together. We were kind of surprised you agreed to it, honestly, but we’re both really hoping it works out - we’ve, um… had our eyes on you for a long time,” she admitted, scratching the side of her head bashfully. “But we know this type of thing isn’t for everyone, so how do you feel about it?”
“I’m fine with it!” Spike quickly said. “I’ve never tried it before… but I like both of you a lot, too. I’ve actually been interested in both of you for a long time, for a few months now, but I thought, since you two were together, I didn’t have much of a chance… This, though, would honestly be really perfect for me. I’ve never tried something like this before, but I’d definitely like to!”
“Ah, thank Celestia!” Sparkler proclaimed, smiling wide with excitement. “I was so worried you were going to be completely uninterested right from the beginning, but I’m really happy we have a chance! I’d really love to spend more time with you, Spike, and I know Raindrops wants to as well.”
Raindrops nodded calmly, though her pink cheeks and her wide smile showed that she was just as excited as Sparkler was. “That’s right, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves - we should at least talk for a little bit longer before we commit to anything.”
Sparkler lowered her head a bit. “R-right, of course,” she said, realizing she might’ve gotten a bit too hyper too fast.
Spike chuckled. “Don’t worry, I’m excited too! How about we order our drinks and talk a bit more while we drink them?”
“Sounds delightful,” Raindrops said. They each picked up their menu and browsed its contents, Raindrops and Spike both using their hooves and claws (respectively), while Sparkler held it up with her magic, her horn having a bluish tint to it. It reminded Spike of Rarity a bit, though he’d long since given up on the fashionista unicorn, at least romantically - that was destined to never quite work out.
“What do you usually get at places like this, Spike?” Sparkler asked, moving her menu down a bit to look at the dragon. She was feeling a bit jumpy right then; the excitement of actually having a chance with someone she was interested in was really getting to her. Meanwhile, Raindrops seemed absolutely fine… or at least, she would seem that way to anyone else, but Sparkler could tell she was feeling the exact same way.
“Um…” Spike browsed the menu. “Well… I’m not very adventurous when it comes to drinks. I usually just get juice here.” He smiled awkwardly. “Maybe not the most interesting thing to get at a café…”
“There’s nothing wrong with that,” Raindrops interjected, and Sparkler nodded. “You should just get whatever you like. Nothing wrong with juice - it’s probably healthier than what I’m planning on getting.” She laughed a bit, setting down her menu.
“What are you getting, then?” Spike prompted.
“Well… I was thinking of doing an iced chai latte. They make them super sweet here, and I always prefer it that way.” This time, rather than Spike being embarrassed about his choice, Raindrops seemed to be feeling the embarrassment.
“I think I’m going to do the same thing - an iced drink is perfect for this weather.” Sparkler’s menu plopped onto the table, closed. “You’re both being way too worried over what drink you’re getting, it doesn’t matter that much - just get what you want!”
“Hmm… in that case, actually… maybe I’ll try that too,” Spike said. “If you both like it, I’m sure it’s great.”
“Ah, I really hope you like it then!” Raindrops responded, fidgeting with her menu a bit. “I’ll pay for the drinks, just in case it isn’t to your taste, so you aren’t wasting your money.”
Spike shook his head. “If it’s a suggestion from you, I’m sure it can’t be bad. And if I don’t like it, that’s fine - it’s more about being with you guys than the drink.”
“Aww~!” Sparkler giggled. “You’re so charming, Spike, it’s no wonder we both fell for you.”
“Sparkler!” Raindrops quickly scolded, her face turning entirely red.
Spike’s face flushed as well, though he kept smiling. “Well, you’re both charming, too - honestly, I’ve been kinda jealous of your relationship for a while… I really hope this is going alright so far…”
“Trust me, it is,” Raindrops said, putting her hoof on top of Spike’s hand, looking into his eyes. Her hoof was warm, her fur was soft… Spike wished it would stay there for a while. “I think we can all agree that, already, we don’t want things to end at just this one date.”
“Agreed!” Sparkler quickly added, quickly pushing one of her own hooves right into their little embrace. “We should go do something else after this - maybe you can come over to our house for a bit, Spike? We really want to get to know you better!”
“Over to… your house?” Spike repeated; his cheeks continued to be flushed, though now for a bit of a different reason.
“Sparkler…” Raindrops shook her head. “She didn’t mean anything like that, Spike. That would be rushing things a bit. It would actually just be to hang out, promise.”
“Anything like what?” Sparkler asked, confused.
“Are you ready to order?” a waiter suddenly asked, standing next to their table; immediately, they all drew their hooves and claws back.
Raindrops quickly composed herself. “Three iced chai lattes, one for each of us, please,” she ordered. “And maybe some water for the table, too.”
“Coming right up!” The waiter-pony walked off; Raindrops sighed in relief.
“Hey, about what you were just saying—”
“I’ll tell you later, Sparkler,” Raindrops quickly said, patting the pony on the head. “Anyways… um…” she struggled to find a new topic of conversation to latch onto; Spike decided to help out.
“Where did you both get your cutie marks?” he asked, his blush finally beginning to fade a bit, although it was hard not to keep a little bit of redness in his cheeks.
“Ah, I got mine from doing weather control with the pegasi,” Raindrops said, perking up at the chance to talk about her passion. “I’ve always been pretty good at it - I lead my own squadron. I got the cutie mark while clearing up a dangerous storm that some other pegasi had accidentally put together.”
“Wow, that’s cool!” Spike leaned over in his seat, his eyes glowing with excitement. “I never thought doing weather control could be so… heroic!”
“Well, it wasn’t anything that special,” Raindrops said, curling her hair in her hoof timidly.
“Don’t let her sell herself short,” Sparkler quickly interjected. “It was so cool, I can remember every moment of it! That storm could’ve flooded ponies’ houses if she hadn’t stepped up, taken control of the situation, made a strategy, and taken care of the whole thing! That’s the moment I fell in love with her, seeing how she moved up in the clouds - it was seriously something.”
“Don’t embarrass me, Sparkler!” Raindrops quickly said, her face turning red once more.
“It’s payback for you talking about me getting ready this morning~” Sparkler snickered as Raindrops rolled her eyes, Spike laughing at the interaction. “I got my cutie mark from using my magic to find diamonds in a cave when I was young. This bow is made with one of the first ones I ever found, actually. That’s how I make money now, finding diamonds and selling them - since I focus on just diamonds instead of gems in general, I can locate them from really far away.”
“That’s really cool too!” Spike spoke, trying not to think about how much he wanted to eat one. “I’ve never heard of anypony having such a particular talent. You must be really important to your customers, I doubt anypony else can provide as much as you can!”
“You’re absolutely right,” she said, confidently, holding her head high. “I’ve spent a lot of time honing it so I can reach really long distances! I have a ton of extra diamonds back home, too. Dragons eat gems, don’t they? If you come over later, I’ll give you a few!”
“Wait, really?!” Spike’s mouth was beginning to water; he desperately held back from letting that show. “I’d love that, diamonds are my favorite!”
“I can spare some for someone as great as you, Spike,” Sparkler said, pushing her hair behind her shoulder. “Does that mean you’ll come over later?”
“Of course, I’d be happy to! I don’t have anything going on. Oh, and, um, not just for the diamonds, of course,” he quickly added. “I really want to spend more time with you both, get to know you better…”
“Perfect,” Raindrops said, unable to hold herself back from letting out an excited titter.
The waiter soon returned, a tray with three cups filled with ice and a light-brown liquid on his back; using his teeth, he set each one in front of them. “Enjoy.”
They all gave their thanks to the server and sipped their drinks. “Wow, it’s good,” Spike said, surprised. “I thought it would be more bitter!”
“Not the way they make it here - chai is usually a bit bitter, but with this much milk and sugar, it’s hard to notice,” Raindrops said, pleasantly enjoying the drink. “It’s good without the additives too, though.”
“Not for me.” Sparkler floated the cup to her lips and drank from it. “I can’t stand having it plain. It’s so much better this way.”
The three soon finished their drinks; Raindrops picked up the tab, as she’d said she would, without allowing the other two to stop her. As the waiter left with the payment, the three stood.
“So, really quick, before we go…” Spike twiddled his claws. “How are you guys feeling about this? I really enjoyed myself, and honestly, I’d like it a lot if we could go on a few more dates, and see each other more…”
Sparkler and Raindrops looked at each other knowingly, and then both gave Spike a light kiss on the cheeks at the same time, making the dragon’s face light up like a glowing ruby. “We both agree,” Sparkler said. “I think we’ll make for a very nice polycule~”
“Mhm~ Come on, let’s get going - our house isn’t far from here. We have an extra bedroom, too, if you want to stay the night!”
“That would be great!” Spike responded. He couldn’t have predicted how well this would turn out… even if they were all more than a bit awkward about this, their feelings for each other were already blooming. A very long and loving road awaited the new throuple ahead.
